Mrs. Gwenda “Gwen” W. Chalker
Mrs. Gwenda “Gwen” W. Chalker, 52, of Gibson entered into rest on Wednesday, July 1, 2009, at Medical College of Georgia.

Mrs. Chalker was a homemaker. She was a member of Magnolia Baptist Church. She was also very active in Relay For Life.

Funeral services were held at Magnolia Baptist Church on Saturday, July 4, 2009, at 10 a.m., with Rev. Alex Williams and Adrian Burrell officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her father, James Talmadge Gay; and her mother, Edna Hobbs Gay Dye Dobbins.

Survivors include her husband, Jeffery Chalker; sons, Chris Kelley and Adam Kelley; stepdaughter, Kim Reese; seven grandchildren, Luke, Shaun, Allyanna, Mikayla, Taliah, Josian and Sarina; stepfather, Melvin Dye; stepmother, Midge Gay; brother, Mike Dye; and two sisters, Lynn Norton and Janet Neal.

Pallbearers were Glenn Braddock, Curl Chalker, Ernie Kelley, Tony Kelley, Leonard Knotts and Jeff Neal.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2607 Commons Blvd, Augusta, GA 30909 or to the American Lung Association, 2452 Spring Rd, Smyrna, GA 30080.

HMC Joseph Upton Cochran Sr.
HMC Joseph Upton Cochran Sr., USNA (Ret.), 87, of Keysville entered into rest on Friday, July 3, 2009, at his residence.

Mr. Cochran was born in Burke County on Dec. 25, 1921. He joined the Navy and served during WWII, receiving several awards and accommodations. After retiring from the Navy, he returned to Keysville where he owned and operated a general store and farmed for well over 20 years. He served two terms as city councilman for the city of Keysville.

Graveside services with full military honors were held on Monday, July 6, 2009, at 1 p.m. at the Keysville UMC Cemetery, with Ed Chance officiating.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Lawrence Cochran and George Cochran, both of Waynesboro; and his sisters, Bessie Russell and Elizabeth Hood, both of Waynesboro, Willie Mae Cawley, Walterboro S.C., and Ruby Williams, Wadley.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Hassie Margaret Padgett Cochran; sons, Joseph U. “Joey” Cochran Jr. and G. Scott (Sylvia) Cochran, both of Swainsboro; four grandchildren, Jason Cochran, Swainsboro, Scotty (Lizzie) Cochran, Augusta, Ron Moore, Swainsboro, and Lesley (B.J.) Arrington, Matthews; and three great-grandchildren, Weston Moore, Kiley Arrington and A. J. Cochran.

Honorary pallbearers were Cecil Elliott, C.W. Hopkins, Hubert Padgett III, Truman Smith, Judson Taylor, and his grandsons, Jason, Scotty and Ron.

James Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Beatrice Ella Cole
Mrs. Beatrice Ella Cole, 90, of East Wallingford, Vt., entered into rest on Saturday, July 4, 2009, at the Rutland Regional Medical Center in Rutland, Vt., following a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 9, 2009, at the Wallingford Aldous Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Maple Grove Cemetery in East Wallingford, Vt.

She was born on Nov. 27, 1918 in Wallingford, Vt., the daughter of Clarence and Myrtha (Earle) Brown. Mrs. Cole had been employed by the Mt. Holly Elementary School in the lunchroom and for many years by the Seward Cheese Factory prior to her retirement.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Cole; a son, Stephen “Jim” Cole; two sisters; and two brothers.

Survivors include three daughters, Constance Fullam (Mert) of Springfield, Vt., Linda Tarbell (Raymond) of Mt. Holly, Vt., and Lynnette Devereux (Douglas) of Belmont, Vt.; four sons, Ted Cole (Charla) of Louisville, Gerald Cole (Gloria) of Springfield, Vt., Gale Cole (Judy) of Stillmore, and Lynn Cole (Sharon) of Rutland Town, Vt.; a daughter-in-law, Victoria Cole-Wilbur of Wallingford, Vt.; 26 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, two great-great-granddaughters, nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mt Holly Rescue, P0 Box 102, Mt Holly, VT 05758.

Mrs. Lillian Elizabeth Gay Groover
Mrs. Lillian Elizabeth Gay Groover, 88, of Wrens entered into rest on Tuesday, June 30, 2009, at Jefferson Hospital in Louisville.

Mrs. Groover was born in Jefferson County, graduated from Thomson High School, obtained her bachelors and masters degrees, and taught school in Dearing, Jesup, Lyons and Palm Beach County, Fla.

Funeral services were held at James Funeral Home Chapel on Thursday, July 2, 2009, at 9 a.m., with Rev. Keith Jordan officiating. Interment followed at Wrens Cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Daniel Detroit and Elma Dickson Gay; husband, William Rast Groover Sr.; brothers, Sidney Morris Gay and Drew Elliott Gay; and sister, Lawanna Gay Eubanks.

Survivors include her son, William Rast (Ann) Groover Jr., Fort McCoy, Fla.; daughters, Carole Deane (William Coleman) Groover, Chicago, Ill., and Martha Ann (David) Lindner; eight grandchildren, Lori Groover (Wayne) McDonald, Ocala, Fla., Joseph Christopher (Victoria) Groover, Kings Bay, Calvin Thomas (Erica) Groover, Murphy, N.C., Katelyn Groover (Julio) Manressa, Ocala, Fla., Elisheva Ruth Coleman, Manhattan, N.Y., Elizabeth Marie (Faith) Lindner, Athens, Sarah Ann (Javier) Lindner, and David Brian (Christy) Lindner II, Athens; and six great-grandchildren, Kenneth, Jared, Gracianna, Isabel, Ava and Jonathan.

Pallbearers were Joseph Groover, David Jackson, David Lindner II, James John, Wells McCorkle Jr. and Ethan Womack.

Mrs. Minnie Mae Guinn
Mrs. Minnie Mae Guinn, 85, of Louisville entered into rest on Tuesday, June 30, 2009, at Jefferson County Hospital.

Mrs. Guinn was born May 4, 1924, in Gwinnett County to the late Milligan M. and Vinnie Lee Baughcum White. She lived in Louisville for the past 12 years and was a former resident of Irwinville, Swainsboro, Eatonton and Eastman. During World War II, she worked for the Bomber plants in Macon and Augusta. She was a homemaker and an Avon sales representative. Mrs. Guinn was a member of the First Baptist Church in Louisville.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 3, 2009, at the Paulk Funeral Home Chapel, Fitzgerald, with Rev. David Biggers officiating. Interment followed in Irwinville Cemetery.

Survivors include her daughters, Patricia Edsall of Swainsboro, and Anita Guinn of Louisville; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; sisters, Mildred Rogers of Fitzgerald, Pearl Hall of Tucker, Irene Anderson of Fitzgerald, and Betty Avery of Doles; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John Guinn; brother, Daniel Claude White; and three great-grandchildren.

Paulk Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Ethel Kitchens Gray Hinton
Mrs. Ethel Kitchens Gray Hinton, 85, of Gibson entered into rest on Saturday, July 4, 2009, at Doctors Hospital, Augusta.

Mrs. Hinton lived in Glascock all of her life. She was retired from Thomson Company as an inspector. She was a member of Magnolia Baptist Church and attended Shoals Primitive Baptist Church. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary at the V.F.W. in Thomson.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 7, 2009, at Magnolia Baptist Church Cemetery, with Elder Eddie Whidby officiating.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Atwell Edward Gray Sr.; her daughter, Judy Purvis; and a son, Atwell Edward Gray Jr.

Survivors include her husband, Paul Hinton; five daughters, Pat (Rick) Rios of Augusta, Linda Barrow of Mitchell, Kathy Benson of North Augusta, S.C., Wanda (Mel) Jobes of Thomson, and Cindy (Murphy) Harrell of Mitchell; two sons, Wayne (Diane) Gray of Augusta, and Mark (Pam) Gray of Warrenton; 14 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Bobbie Jean Horton of Augusta, Dorothy Clark of Avera, and Grace Holton of Gibson.

Pallbearers were Chris Woods, Mel Jobes, Rick Rios, Joe Dean Usry, Hoyt Cole and Murphy Harrell.

Honorary pallbearer was Scottie Cole.

Memorials may be made to the Glascock County Concerned Citizens in care of Corene Chalker, 3037 Bastonville Rd., Gibson, Ga. 30810.

Mrs. Vivian Holsonback Rollins
Mrs. Vivian Holsonback Rollins of Greenwood, S.C., entered into rest on Friday, July 3, 2009, at Hospice House.

Born on April 18, 1918, in Newberry County, S.C., Mrs. Rollins was a daughter of the late John William and Sallie Redd Holsonback. She graduated from Greenwood High School and was a lifelong resident of Greenwood. She belonged to Saint Mark United Methodist Church and was a member of the Proctor Circle.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, July 5, 2009, at 5 p.m. in the Blyth Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Barrett Alewine officiating. Burial was in Oakbrook Memorial Park.

Survivors include two daughters, Rebecca R. (J.E.) Gabriel of Pickens, S.C., and Alice Ann (Michael) Castengera of Athens; grandchildren, Julie Gabriel (Greg) Ray, Amy (Gary) Barker, Marisa Castengera, Vivian Castengera and Michael Adam Castengera; seven great-grandchildren, Hannah Ray, Claire Ray, Anna Crews, Allen Crews, Cecillia Barker Grisham, Paige Barker and Ryan-Ann Castengera; and three great-great-grandchildren, Canaan and Aiden Grisham, and Vivienne Victoria Threatt.

Pallbearers were J.E. Gabriel, Michael Castengera, Michael Adam Castengera, Greg Ray, Gary Barker and Matthew Hawk.

The family request that memorials be made to Hospice Care of the Piedmont, 408 West Alexander Avenue, Greenwood, SC 29646.

Mr. Warren Harold “Buck” Sheppard
Mr. Warren Harold “Buck” Sheppard, 79, of Wrens entered into rest Friday, July 3, 2009, at Gibson Health and Rehabilitation Facility.

Mr. Sheppard was a lifelong resident of Jefferson County and retired as Wrens’ U.S. Postmaster. He also served on the Wrens Volunteer Fire Department until his retirement. He was a member of Wrens United Methodist Church.

Memorial services were held at the Wrens UMC on Monday, July 6, 2009, at 4 p.m., with Rev. Stan Littleton officiating.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Barbra Joan Boulineau Sheppard; children, Harold J. (Cheryl) Sheppard, Avera, Janet (Smith) Dickson, Stapleton, and Sandra (Marc) Adams, Atlanta; four grandchildren; and sister, Barbara Davis, Charlotte, N.C.

Mr. Glynn Wallace
Mr. Glynn Wallace, 64, of Stapleton entered into rest on Sunday, June 28, 2009, at his residence.

Mr. Wallace was born Sept. 25, 1944, in Savannah. He graduated from Bay High School in Panama City, Fla., and then served during the Vietnam War. He was a member of American Legion Post #229, The Seekers Relay For Life Team and a former member of the United Methodist Men.

Funeral services were held at James Funeral Home Chapel on Wednesday, July 1, 2009, at 11 a.m., with Rev. Scott Hill officiating. Interment followed at Waldens UMC, Avera.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Faye Spence Wallace.

Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Norma Seigler Wallace; sisters, Faith (Ed) Farmer, Panama City, Fla., and Carmen Hunter, Venice, Fla.; mother-in-law, Mildred B. Seigler, Augusta; uncles, Charles (Doris) Wallace, Millen, and Rev. Scott (Kit) Hill, Norfolk, Va.; aunts, Peggy Wallace, Dublin, and Grace Lovingood, Cartersville; nephews, nieces and cousins; and his pets.

Pallbearers were Hugh Avery, Jimmy Black, Charlie Davis, Eldon Ensz, Gary Rhodes and Wayne Smith.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Seekers Relay For Life, c/o Dianne Rhodes, 2771 Hwy 102, Wrens, GA 30833, or to a personal favorite charity.

Mr. George Willie Young of Wadley entered into rest on Saturday, June 27, 2009.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Friday, July 3, 2009, at Wadley Church of God In Christ in Wadley.

Survivors include his wife, Georgia M. Young.

Mr. Alton S. Chalker
Mr. Alton S. Chalker of Augusta entered into rest on Tuesday, June 30, 2009, at University Hospital.

He was the husband of Helen Hunt Chalker. Mr. Chalker, a native of Glascock County, retired from a local Chevrolet dealer as a service manager since 1954. He was a veteran of WWII in the U.S. Navy

Memorial services were held on Saturday, July 11, 2009, at 3 p.m. at Boykin Road Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses South, with Speaker Jerry L. O’Dell.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Patsy Fifer, Augusta, and Carolyn (Jerry) O’Dell, Baton Rouge, La.; and four grandchildren, Eric Fifer and Jared (Sheri) Fifer, Cara O’Dell, Gregory (Amaris) O’Dell and Phineas O’Dell; the Thurmond family; and many nieces and nephews.

McNeill Funeral Home was in charge of services.

Mrs. Helen Allen Henderson
Mrs. Helen Allen Henderson, 85, of Wadley entered into rest on Thursday, July 9, 2009, at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta.

Mrs. Henderson, born in Burke County, had lived in Wadley many years. Her working career included service at Bank of Wadley, Farmer’s Gin and Storage and Jefferson County Library System. She retired from the Jefferson County School System in December 1988. She was a member of the Wadley Baptist Church, where she was in the choir, the Women’s Missionary Union, served as G.A. Director, and women’s Sunday school teacher.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 11, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Wadley Baptist Church, with Rev. Rusty Manning and Rev. Tom Harrison officiating. Interment followed in the Wadley Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Pete F. Henderson of Wadley; three children, Allen C. Henderson (Susan), Danette H. Plummer (Bob) and Julie H. Lee; and four grandchildren, Robert, Margaret, Christopher and Nicholas.

Pallbearers were Eddie Fennell, Benjie Leaptrott, George Ratchford Jr., Bobby Weeks and Randall Jones.

Honorary pallbearers were Deacons of Wadley Baptist Church, and members of The Dorcas, Gleaners and Victory Sunday School Classes.
