Mr. Carl Clayton Ervin
Mr. Carl Clayton Ervin, 79, of Marietta entered into rest on Monday, Sept. 28, 2009.

The funeral will be conducted by West Cobb Funeral Home in Marietta. Burial will be at Eleazar United Methodist Church in Mount Vernon, Tenn.

Mr. Ervin was born on Nov. 23, 1929, in Mount Vernon, Tenn., to John Lester Ervin Sr. and Carrie Lou Haun. He was a retired postal worker.

He was preceded in death by wives, Imogene Kirkland Ervin and Doris Jones Ervin; and a son, Jerry Ervin.

Survivors include six children, Teresa Ervin Foss of Louisville, Alan Ervin of Woodstock, Larry Ervin of Mableton, Barry Ervin of Powder Springs, Frieda Ervin Stafford of Robles Junction, Ariz., and Robert Ervin of Tucson, Ariz.; three siblings; and eight grandchildren.

West Cobb Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Thomas Lee Gibbons
Mr. Thomas Lee Gibbons of Wadley entered into rest on Sunday, Sept. 20, 2009, in Louisville.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009, at 2 p.m. at Hudson Mortuary Chapel in Wadley, with Rev. Walter Holmes officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include his companion, Betty Jean Hodges of Wadley; eight daughters, Rosa Gibbons and Valerie Williams, both of Swainsboro, Malisa Holmes, Elaine Cooper and Francine Hill, all of Wadley, Michelle Richardson of Louisville, Peggy Gibbons of Sparta, and Viola Barnes of Lawton, Ohio; two sons, Tom Gibbons Jr., of Waynesboro, and Jimmy Lee Hodges of Bartow; sister, Carrie Gilmore of Hollywood, Fla.; brother, Robert Gibbons Jr. of Hollywood, Fla.; two sons-in-law, five sisters-in-law, one daughter-in-law, 36 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Hudson Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Inez Chalker Hadden
Mrs. Inez Chalker Hadden, 71, of Gibson entered into rest on Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2009, at Emory Hospital, Atlanta.

Mrs. Inez was a native of Glascock County and lived there all her life. She was retired from Forstman Textile Company and she attended the Mitchell United Methodist Church.

Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 25, 2009, at the Mitchell United Methodist Church, with Rev. Mary Griswell officiating. Interment was in Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery, Gibson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Hadden; parents, Dillie Peebles and Aytch Chalker; two sisters, Bert Norris and Sallie Norris; and four brothers, Ray Chalker, John Chalker, Bobby Chalker and Harry Lee Chalker.

Survivors include her son, Troy (Cathrine) Hadden of Gibson; three brothers, Joe (Corene) Chalker of Gibson, Thomas Watson Chalker of Augusta, and Eugene Talmadge (Mary) Chalker of Gibson; three grandchildren, Katelyn Elizabeth Hadden, Emily Madison Hadden and Norris Hadden; and friend, Dr. Author Yarborough.

Pallbearers were Donald Kent, Clyde Wood, Stevie Wood, Terry Usry, Calvin McCoy and Scott Fitzgerald.

Memorials may be made to the Mitchell United Methodist Church in care of Janice Sexton, 8654 Warrenton-Mitchell Road, Mitchell, Ga. 30820.

Mrs. Marilyn White Joiner
Mrs. Marilyn White Joiner, 66, of Florida, formerly of Wrens, entered into rest on Sunday, Sept. 27, 2009.

She was the only child of Pat and Miriam White formerly of Wrens. She was born Feb. 1, 1943, in Atlanta. She was a 1950s graduate of Wrens High School.

A memorial service was held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2009, at St. Pauls Presbyterian Church in Ocoee, Fla.

Survivors include her husband, sister, son, daughter and two grandchildren.

Mr. James Ralph Moats Jr.
Mr. James Ralph Moats Jr., 46, of Harlem entered into rest on Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2009.

Mr. Moats was born in Sandersville to the late James Moats Sr. and Marlene Gahm Moore and was a general contractor.

Memorial services were held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 25, 2009, at Central Church of Christ, Martinez, with Pastor Scott Patterson officiating.

Survivors include his wife, Karen Brittingham Moats; two daughters, Ashley Palmer (Kenny), Thomson, and Amanda Brown (Josh), Savannah; four sisters, Debbie King, Tampa, Fla., Cindy Holt, Thomson, Linda Williams, Blythe, and Cheryl Bazemore, Gibson; mother-in-law, Betty Weathers, Hephzibah; and two grandchildren, Dylan Bryson and Delayna Bryson.

Starling Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Eddie Murphy
Mr. Eddie Murphy, 45, of Dearing entered into rest on Monday, Sept. 21, 2009, at his residence.

Mr. Murphy was a native of Richmond County, but had lived in Thomson for many years. He was a home remodeling contractor and a Baptist.

Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 24, 2009, at the Curtis Funeral Home Chapel.

Survivors include his son, Michael (April) Murphy, Hephzibah; his granddaughter, Destiny Leah Murphy, Hephzibah; his mother, Rachel Powell Murphy Evans, Thomson; his father, Marvin Murphy, Dearing; two sisters, Amanda Story, Louisville, and Tammy Pope, Thomson; a brother, Mark Murphy, Thomson; and several nieces and nephews.

Curtis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Lizzie Strowbridge Quarterman
Mrs. Lizzie Strowbridge Quarterman, 46, of Louisville entered into rest on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009, at Jefferson Hospital.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2009, at 1 p.m. at Mt. Olive Baptist Church and Cemetery,

Mrs. Quarterman was a native of Jefferson County. She attended Jefferson County School System and was a member of the Mt. Olive Baptist Church. Mrs. Quarterman was a former employee of Cadet.

Survivors include her husband, Will Quarterman of Louisville; children, Lizzie Strowbridge of Midville, William M. Quarterman, Kimberly Monique Quarterman and Trakeena Lashae Quarterman, all of Louisville; parents, Ralph Strowbridge and Mamie Buyon Strowbridge, both of Midville; sisters, Mamie (Johnny) Hodge of Waynesboro, and Elnora (Leroy) Smith of Midville; mother-in-law, Pauline Quarterman Hines of Louisville; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Mary (James) Cook, Paula Pringle and Diahann (Vincent) Cannida, all of Louisville, and Porter (Debra) Quarterman of Wrens; a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.

Mr. Charles Smith
Mr. Charles Smith, 49, of Avera entered into rest on Monday, Sept. 21, 2009.

Mr. Smith was born in Midville on Oct. 14, 1959, to the late Hayward and Annie Gilmore Smith. He served in the Army Reserve during the 1980s. He was employed by Glit Manufacturing in Wrens for numerous years and he owned a barber shop. Mr. Smith joined Spread Chapel AME Church at an early age. He served on the Matthews Circuit of the Sons of Allen Men’s Fellowship.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009, at 3 p.m. at Spread Chapel AME Church, Stapleton, with Pastor Rev. Timothy Lewis presiding and Brother Norman Roberts as eulogist. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include fiancée, Daphnye Beasley Smith of Avera; one son, Rico Smith of Augusta; two stepchildren, Felicia (Robert) Hightower of Chester, Va., and Kristofer Beasley of Avera; two grandchildren, Kristofer Beasley Jr. of Louisville, and Bryce-Ryan Hightower of Chester, Va.; seven sisters, Annie Lois Vaughner, Ollie Neal and Inez Smith, all of Wrens, Carolyn (Wilbur) Allen of Atlanta, Marian Lewis of Midville, Fannie Bell Scruggs of Augusta, and Pauline Webb of Wadley; seven brothers, Sammie (Janie) Williams of Thomson, Bernard (Rose) Williams of Augusta, Keon Jordan of Wrens, Reggie Smith of Augusta, Hayward Smith Jr. of Macon, Ezimo Smith of Midville, and Gordon Smith of Sparta; a great-aunt, Frances Gilmore of Florida; one great-uncle, Cleveland Reed of Augusta; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Mr. Daniel Gilbert Smith
Mr. Daniel Gilbert Smith, 88, of Warrenton entered into rest on Monday, Sept. 21, 2009, at his residence.

Mr. Smith was retired. He was the husband of 62 years to Grace Roberson Smith.

Funeral Services were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2009, at the Long Creek Baptist Church, with Rev. Chad Crews officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. David Roy Thompson Sr.
Mr. David Roy Thompson Sr., 70, of Grovetown entered into rest at his residence on Thursday, Sept. 24, 2009.

Mr. Thompson served his country in the U.S. Navy. He was a Christian and a member of Bellevue Baptist Church. He coached sports for the Columbia County Recreation Department. He was a retired lead operator for Kimberly Clark.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Sept. 27, 2009, in the Belair Road Chapel of Platt’s Funeral Home at 2 p.m., with Pastor Brian Martin and Pastor Richard Boyd officiating. Interment followed in Bellevue Memorial Gardens.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Edward Thompson, William Thompson, Bennie Thompson and R.A. Thompson; and sisters, Jean Burton, Lucille Thompson and Bessie Mae Thompson.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Thompson; two sons, David R. Thompson Jr. (Dana) of Evans, and Darren E. Thompson of Grovetown; two daughters, Angela Thompson McIntosh (Barry) of Tybee Island, and Cindy Cribb (Keith) of Augusta; children’s mother, Marie Ellis; one brother, John Thompson of Martinez; four sisters, Annabelle Seago (Terry) of Hephzibah, Ruby Holley of Wrens, Bertha Jay (Marion) and Gladys Howard (Roy) of Augusta; six grandchildren, William Eisele, Holly Eisele, Dustin Thompson, Daylee Thompson, Shelby Thompson and Isabella Thompson.

Pallbearers were Brian Thompson, Scottie Thompson, Mark Patterson, Dustin Thompson, Travis Thompson, William Eisele and James Kitchens.

Honorary pallbearers were the Ronnie Paige Sunday School Class and Red Price.

Mr. Eugene “Da Gene” Jackson Sr. of Bartow entered into rest on Friday, Oct. 2, 2009, in Bartow.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2009, at 2 p.m. at Jones Chapel CME Church in Bartow, with Rev. Daryl Jackson officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Dora Moore Jackson; children, Eugene (Orlanda) Jackson Jr., Tennille, Adam (Lois) Jackson, Dothan, Ala., Dorothy (Earl) Lowery, Wadley, and Michael (Michelle) Jackson, Bartow; one sister, Doris Thompson, Bartow; three brothers, Sammie Lee (Victoria) Thompson and Johnny Albert Thompson, all of New York, N.Y. and George (Diane) Thompson, Long Island, N.Y.; 14 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, three brothers-in-law, five sisters-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Mr. David W. Kelley Jr. of Stapleton entered into rest on Sunday, Oct. 4, 2009, at his residence.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time and will be announced later.

He was the husband of Shirley M. Kelley.

Mr. Javon “Buddy” Kilpatrick
Mr. Javon “Buddy” Kilpatrick, 22, of Louisville entered into rest on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2009, at Medical College of Georgia, Augusta.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 10, 2009, at 2 p.m. at Spring Bethel AME Church and Spring Bethel Benevolent Society Cemetery.

Mr. Kilpatrick was the son of the late Eddie and Bernice Thomas Kilpatrick. Born in New York, he moved to Georgia where he lived most of his life. He joined Spring Bethel AME Church at an early age and was a 1976 graduate of Jefferson County High. At age 7 he was stricken with Muscular Dystrophy. He attended Adult Day Care in Louisville.

Survivors include his caretakers, sister, Bernestine (Solomon) Gamble of Louisville; sisters and brothers, Ray Charles (Vanzola) Smith, Glorestine Cunningham, Donnell (Roberta) Cunningham and Connie (Donnie) Brown, all of Louisville, Juanita (Tom Albert) Cuyler, Inerbell (Herman) Williams, Joe Willie (Alice) Smith, Miller (Norma) Smith, Shirley Tyson, Eddie (Towanda) Cunningham, Bobby (Adriane) Cunningham, Ronnie Cunningham and Tyrone Cunningham, all of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; friend, Ladarius “Body Guard” Morgan of Louisville; uncle and aunts, David Thomas, Shirley Thomas and Inez McBride, all of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
