PEGGY JEAN ROCKWELL
1944-2005
Ms. Rockwell, of Nicholson, Ga died, just as she lived, with a big happy grin on her face. Ms.Rockwell, born in Tacoma Park, Maryland, was the daughter of the late Harvey and Alyce Rockwell. She was raised in Indianapolis, Indiana, attended Perdue University, and graduated from Indiana University with a degree in food service management. Ms. Rockwell lived in the Indianapolis area for 20 years before moving to Chicago, Illinois where she worked as a food service manager in area hospitals, restaurants as well the corporate food industry. Peggy spent time in South Carolina, Tennessee, Mississippi, California, Hilton Head and then finally settled in the Athens, Georgia area in 1989 where she had accepted a food service job at Athens Regional Medical Center. Fortunately for the ladies in the Athens area, the hospital job did not work out and Ms. Rockwell opened the doors to her gently worn clothing consignment store by the name of The Crowded Closet in 1990.

In the years to follow and right up until her death, Ms. Rockwell was heavily involved in animal advocacy, welfare and rescue. The lives ofliterally hundreds of dogs have been saved by not only her own personal adoptions, but by her monetary and medical donations. If there were an auction, benefit, adoption event or birthday celebration relating to animals, in particular dogs, Ms Rockwell would always be present to help, not only with her time, advice, gifts, and donations but her humor and warm smiles.

Ms. Rockwell's personal opinion of a crowning achievement would be the fact that she rescued a 14-year-old Pomeranian from a veterinarian that was left by its owner. The male "pom' was given the name Nugget, and attended every social function with Peggy, whether it be a hat party, an auction benefiting animals, a Gracie birthday party, or a fund raiser, always dressed in his canine finery. Nugget later fell madly in love with another Pomeranian named Sugar who was the young age of 11. The two small dogs, with the assistance and blessing of their beloved owner were wed in complete wedding attire during a particular hat party that was hosted by the Athens Pulmonary Association held at Special Occasions near the river at the Clark/Oconee line. In attendance to this very unique and special occasion were the photographers of the Athens Banner-Herald who published the event in the newspaper social event section. Nugget and Sugar lived in wedded bliss until the ripe age of 21 and 17 consecutively to the delight and complete devotion of Ms. Rockwell.

Ms. Rockwell is survived by one sister, Nanci Likens and two brothers, Tom Rockwell and Pete Rockwell, which still live in the Indianapolis area.

Bernstein Funeral Home will cremate Ms. Rockwell and her memorial service will be held in her honor at Chateau Elan in Braselton, Ga. on January 23rd for her closest friends. The memorial service will consist of brunch due to the fact that she thoroughly enjoyed eating there in celebration of her birthday for the past several years. The celebration of her life will continue and will be hosted by the large number of her lady friends. To attend, please contact Bryan Chandlee-Exum at 706-769-1036. In lieu of flowers, Ms. Rockwell's request is that shopping be done at her "Upscale Resale" consignment store, The Crowded Closet, located in Mission Square (the pink mall") in Athens, Georgia. Tax-deductible donations can be made to her favorite organizations Canine Angels Rescue and Referrals, Inc. located at 2179 Pulliam Mill Rd. in Dewey Rose, Ga. 30634. Phone 706-213-9001. Owners are Sue Wells, Founder and Lynette Rowe, President. A non-profit, no-kill canine rescue and referral funded entirely by donations and contributions from community and business sponsorships.
