William "Willie" Brown
Mr. William "Willie" Brown of Jersey City, N.J., died Sunday, April 7, 2002.
Mr. Brown, a native of Jefferson County, was the son of the late Jack and Susie Brown Jr. of Avera. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1946 and relocated to Jersey City in 1948 after receiving an Honorable Discharge from the service. He worked various jobs including Palmer Laundry, Gaylord Industrial and Ford Motors. His final place of employment was Reliable Furniture Company. He retired after many years of faithful and dedicated service. He was a member of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church and of the Mason Organization of Harmony Lodge No. 17 A.F. and A.M.

The funeral was held April 11 at 7 p.m. at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Jersey City, with the Rev. John McReynolds officiating. Burial was in Bayview Cemetery, Jersey City.

Survivors include six children, Joanne Adams, James Hanna, Jeanetta and Lenard Brown, Deborah Carter and Sarah Brown; four sisters, Sallie Smith, Augusta, Alda Farmer and Mary Farmer, both of Wrens, and Edna Robinson, Jersey City; one brother, J.C. Stone, North Carolina; 11 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Watson Mortuary Service was in charge of the arrangements.

Eddie "Tollie" Lewis Hood
Mr. Eddie "Tollie" Lewis Hood, 48, of Thomson died Thursday, April 18, 2002, at his residence.

Mr. Hood, a native of Jefferson County, had lived in Thomson for the past two years having moved from Augusta. He worked for Thermo King for 27 years where he was a press brake operator.

The funeral was April 21 at Beggs Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. William Thigpen officiating. Burial was at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Augusta.

Survivors include his wife, Ellen Berry Hood; his mother, Beulah Hood, Louisville; three brothers, James Hood, Mesquite, Texas, Jerry Hood, Dallas, Texas, and Larry Hood, Dearborn Heights, Mich.; two sisters, Irene Mullins, Sulpher, La. And Dianne Bullard, North Augusta; and two grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Danny Neal, Aaron Newsome, Billy Black, Billy Partridge, Tom Moriarity, Derek Neal and Jerry Hood.

Beggs Funeral Home, Thomson, was in charge of the arrangements.

Cecil F. Irby
Mr. Cecil F. Irby, 87, of Gibson died Sunday, April 21, 2002, at his residence.

Mr. Irby, a native of Glascock County, was a farmer. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church where he was a deacon and served the church in other capacities.

The funeral was April 23 at 11 a.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Donald Lumpkin officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Gladys U. Irby; a son, Reginald Irby, Gibson; a sister, Vera Boren, Waynesboro; two grandchildren, Dana Irby, Nashville, Tenn., and Brian Irby, Gibson; and three great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Jack Williford, J.T. Irby, Vernon Irby, Hardwick Norris, Jeffery Irby and Joe Kwollek.

Honorary pallbearers were deacons of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

Memorials may be made to the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Building Fund in care of Mrs. Bobbie Kitchens, 1092 Oak Street, Avera, Ga. 30803.

Horace E. Swann
Mr. Horace E. Swann, 91, of Wrens died Sunday, April 14, 2002, at University Hospital.

The funeral was April 18 at 11 a.m. at Ebenezer Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Gary Jones and Dr. Randall Ruble officiating. Burial was in the Ways Baptist Church Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Swann, Wrens; two sons, Lee Swann, Covington, and Alvin Swann, Tennessee; two daughters, Rosemary Heatherly, North Augusta, and Mary Ann Stone; three sisters, Madge Newsome, Alpharetta, Irene Burton, Barney, and Nellie Noegel, Augusta; one brother, John Swann, Wrens; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 1899 Central Avenue, Augusta, Ga. 30904.

James Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Frances "Tweety" Usry Anderson
Mrs. Frances "Tweety" Usry Anderson, 68, of Thomson died Friday, April 19, 2002, at her residence.

Mrs. Anderson, a native of Glascock County, had lived in McDuffie County most of her life. She was retired from Commercial Credit Corporation. Survivors include her husband, Bill Anderson, Thomson; one son, Billy Anderson, Thomson; one daughter, Patricia Burnley, Thomson; one sister, Anna Belle Neal, Thomson; and five grandchildren.

Beggs Funeral Home, Thomson, was in charge of the arrangements.

Aaron "Bud" Newsome Sr.
Mr. Aaron "Bud" Newsome Sr., 83, of Louisville died Monday, April 15, 2002, at Jefferson Hospital.

Mr. Newsome, a native of Wrens, was retired from Georgia Tennessee Mining Company. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

The funeral was April 18 at 2 p.m. at James Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Freddie Penrow officiating. Burial was in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Avera.

Survivors include four sons, Aaron Newsome Jr., Louisville, Charles Newsome, Dearing, Albert Newsome, Wrens, and James Newsome, Augusta; two daughters, Ruth Powell and Agnes Hall, both of Wrens; two sisters, Lucille Boulineau, Wrens, and Annie Myers, Thomson; 16 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Phil Newsome, Al Powell, Tony Irby, Larry Prickett, Sam Prickett, Wayne Bentley and Jason Albera.

Judy Thomas Davis
Mrs. Judy Thomas Davis of Wadley died Wednesday, April 17, 2002.

The funeral was April 20 at 2:30 p.m. at San Clair Baptist Church in Wadley.

Survivors include one daughter, Patricia Rolle Graves, Wadley; three sons, Patrick Rolle, Numberg, Germany, Virgil Rolle and Rufus Thomas, Louisville; her mother, Mary Lee Curry Thomas, Wadley; three sisters, Alberta Bractley, Brooklyn, N.Y., Willie Anna Kyles, Atlanta, and Lillie T. Harrison, Mt. Vernon, N.Y.; three brothers, Herschel Thomas, Wadley, Harold Jones, Columbus, and Judson Jones, North Carolina; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Hudson Mortuary was in charge of the arrangements.

Calvin Evans Irby
Mr. Calvin Evans Irby, 70, of Gibson died Sunday, April 28, 2002, at McDuffie Regional Medical Center, Thomson.

Mr. Irby was a native of Warren County.

The funeral was April 30 at 3 p.m. at Magnolia Baptist Church, Gibson, with the Dr. Donald Widener officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include three sisters, Mildred Phillips, Gibson, Ethel Davis, Thomson, and Lucille Irby Edmonds, Bradenton, Fla.

Pallbearers were G.H. Cosby, Jason Norris, Mark Phillips, Dean Couch, Eric Couch and Ricky R. Phillips.

Myrtle Palmer Smith
Mrs. Myrtle Palmer Smith, 90, of Bartow died Friday, April 26, 2002, in Jefferson Hospital.

Mrs. Smith was born on Sept. 4, 1911, in Jefferson County. She was the daughter of the late George A. Palmer and Maggie Taylor Palmer and the wife of the late George B. Smith. She was a member of Parker Methodist church.

The funeral was April 28 at 2 p.m. at Southern Heritage Chapel in Louisville with the Rev. Billy Howell officiating. Burial was in Parker Methodist Church Cemetery.

Survivors include three daughters, Annette S. Livingston, Louisville, Margaret S. Miller, Stapleton, and Betty S. Cooper, Bartow; two sons, Jimmy B. Smith, Bartow, and Terry Smith, Stellaville; 13 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and three great great-grandchildren.

James C. Milburn
Mr. James C. Milburn, 86, of Gibson died Monday, April 29, 2002, at McDuffie Regional Medical Center, Thomson.

Mr. Milburn, a native of Glascock County, was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church where he served as deacon and adult Sunday school teacher. He taught a Sunday school class at the Gibson Health and Rehabilitation Center every week. He was a member of the Glascock County Lions Club, a member of the Masonic Lodge #257 and the order of the Eastern Star.

The funeral was May 1 at 4 p.m. at Fellowship Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Seaman officiating. Burial was in Gibson City Cemetery.

Survivors include one son, Dwain Milburn, Martinez; one daughter, Donna Newsome, Gibson; three sisters, Celia Parrish, Gibson, Sara O'Neal, Augusta, and Lillian Simson, Ft. Valley; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Robert O'Neal, David Milburn, Danny Milburn, Keith Milburn, Bonnie Jean Parrish and Jack Williford.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Margaret Morris
Mrs. Margaret Morris of Louisville died Wednesday, April 24, 2002, at Medical College of Georgia.

Mrs. Morris was the widow of the late Harrison Morris.

The funeral was May 1 at 3:30 p.m. at Bryant Grove Baptist Church with pastor Edward Blueford officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include eight daughters and two sons.

Charter's Mortuary, Waynesboro, was in charge of the arrangements.

Jimmy Walker
Mr. Jimmy Walker, 51, of Louisville died Monday, April 22, 2002.

The funeral was April 27 at 1 p.m. at St. Matthews AME Church with the Rev. David Walker officiating.

Bryan Matthew "Bubba" Arrington
Mr. Bryan Matthew "Bubba" Arrington, 18, of Matthews died Friday, May 3, 2002, at the Medical College of Georgia Hospital.
Mr. Arrington was a member of Wrens Church of God. He was a student at Jefferson County High School. He was preceded in death by his mother, Myra Arrington.

The funeral was May 6 at 4 p.m. in the gym of Jefferson County High School with the Revs. Allen Weaver and Marlin Scarboro officiating. Burial was in the Mount Moriah Cemetery, Matthews.

Survivors include his father, Dan Arrington, Matthews; one brother, Daniel Arrington Jr., Matthews; two sisters, Michelle Prather and husband Mike, Matthews, and Danielle Manning and husband Tommy, Martinez; two nephews and two nieces.

Pallbearers were Matt Owens, Brad Arrington, Brandon Beckum, Zachery Lewis, Justin Russell, Wesley Beckum, James Arrington, Trovaris Tremble and Jeff Amerson.

Honorary pallbearers were the JCHS Auto Body Shop Class.

James Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
