James Hubert Williford
Mr. James Hubert Williford, 77, of Stapleton died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002.

Mr. Williford was a member of Stapleton Baptist Church, a member of the Gibson Masonic Lodge No. 257, a Veteran of WW II, a retired TV technician and had the distinction of being the oldest school bus driver in the state of Georgia when he retired as a bus driver.

The funeral was Oct. 8 at 11 a.m. at Stapleton Baptist Church with the Rev. Roy White officiating. Burial was in the Stapleton Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Hazel S. Williford; three sons, Everett Williford, Wrens, Curtis Williford, Columbus, Neb., and Kenneth Williford, Stapleton; three daughters, Bonnie Manning, Wrens, Connie Gay, Matthews, and Susan Lamb, Gibson; a brother, Jack Williford, Gibson; a sister, Bernice Wisniewski, Augusta; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Trey Martin, Jiles Manning, Jamie Williford, Jason Dixon, Jeremy Gay, Justin Manning and Matthew Williford.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 1899 Central Avenue, Augusta, GA 30904.

James Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Ivy Ruth Wise Stewart
Mrs. Ivy Ruth Wise Stewart, 80, of Wadley died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, at Washington County Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Stewart was born in Bryan County, but had lived in Wadley since 1946. She was retired from Gracewood State Hospital, after 13 years of service as a licensed practical nurse. She was owner of Stewarts Pool, a member of the Eastern Star, and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Wadley where she was a member of the Will Evans Sunday School Class.

The funeral was Oct. 9 at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church of Wadley with Dr. Larry Sauls and the Rev. Bob Hall officiating. Burial was in the Wadley City Cemetery.

Survivors include two daughters, Judith Bettilu Morris, Bartow, and Brenda Carol Wallace, Statesboro; three sons, Ivy Lee Stewart Sr., Twin City, Gene Stewart, Swainsboro, and Rocky Stewart, Wadley; 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were grandsons, Newton Wallace Jr., Shane Stewart, Lee Stewart Jr., Darryl Morris, Dwayne Morris and Nick Stewart.

Smith Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Louise Redfern Kitchens
Mrs. Louise Redfern Kitchens, 82, of Mitchell died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002.

Mrs. Kitchens, a native of Glascock County, was a homemaker. She was a member of Mount Zion Congregational Methodist Church. She was retired from Stapleton Garment Company after 25 years of service.

The funeral was Oct. 7 at 3 p.m. at Mount Zion Congregational Methodist Church with the Rev. Al Kurtz officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Virgie Kitchens; one daughter, Ann Kitchens Jackson, Mitchell; three grandsons, Gregg, Scott and Anthony Kelley and one great-grandson, Bayne Kelley.

Pallbearers were Ralph Kelley, Jimmy Kelley, Mitch Raley, Phillip Raley, Charles Hadden and Michael Redfern.

Sheppard Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Tom Gibbons Sr.
Mr. Tom Gibbons Sr. of Wadley died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, at the Carl Vinson Veterans Administration Medical Center in Dublin.

The funeral was Oct. 6 at 2:30 p.m. at Hudson Mortuary Chapel in Wadley.

Survivors include three daughters, Juddie Gibbons, Orlando, Fla. and Theodosia Gibbons and Phyllis Gibbons, Tallahassee, Fla.; six sons, Leroy Gibbons and Tom Gibbons Jr., Tallahassee, Fla., Larry Thomas, Sandersville, Anthony Gibbons, Orlando, Fla., Jacob Gibbons, Memphis, Tenn. and Xavier Gibbons, Wadley; two sisters, Gloria Williams, Tallahassee, Fla. and Annie Mason, Wadley; three brothers, Eddie Gamble Jr., Brooklyn, NY, Billy Gamble, Philadelphia, Pa. and Larry Gamble, Tallahassee, Fla.; 16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Anyanla Sunia Graddy
Little Miss Anyanla Sunia Graddy of Louisville died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002.

Graveside services were held Oct. 8 at 11 a.m. at the Ebenezer CME Church Cemetery with the Rev. Hardy Bennings Jr. officiating.

Survivors include her father and mother, Antonio Graddy of Wrightsville and Susie Mashell Dixon of Louisville; her maternal grandparents, Robert and Dorothy Dixon of Louisville; paternal grandparents, Karen Studick of Wrightsville and Kenneth Holmes of Thomaston; and her maternal great-grandmother, Eunice Flournoy of Louisville.

Davis Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Bessie Heggs McGruder
Mrs. Bessie Heggs McGruder, 49, of Wadley died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, at an Augusta hospital.

Mrs. McGruder, a native of Jefferson County, was a member of Jones Grove Baptist Church.

The funeral was Oct. 5 at 2 p.m. at Jones Grove Baptist Church with the Revs. Kenneth Davis and Jerry Dudley officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include her children, Sherry Smith, Wadley, Rico McGruder, Wadley, and Fredrick McGruder, Camp Lejeune, N.C.; siblings, Delores Cobb, Midville, Junior Heggs Jr., Melvin Heggs, Angela Tarver and Advease Dogan of Louisville, Ernest Heggs, Sandersville; grandchildren, a brother-in-law, four sisters-in-law, and 16 aunts and uncles.

Davis Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Mary E. Harrell
Mrs. Mary E. Harrell, 82, of Gibson died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, at the University Hospital in Augusta.

Mrs. Harrell, a native of Washington County, was a Baptist.

A graveside service was held Oct. 8 at 2 p.m. at Mount Nebo Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Joey Holloway officiating.

Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Humphreys and Polly Brassell, both of Birmingham, Ala.; and several nieces and nephews.

Sheppard Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Marie Parish Odom
Mrs. Marie Parish Odom, 82, of Stapleton died Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002, at the Gibson Nursing Home. Mrs. Odom was a retired inspector at Stapleton Garment Factory and a Baptist by religion.
Graveside services were Oct. 12 at 2 p.m. at Stapleton Baptist Church Cemetery with Gerald Ethridge officiating.

Survivors include one sister Betty Sue Parish, Stapleton; one brother, Leonard Parish, Savannah; two nieces and one nephew and several great nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Stapleton Baptist Church Building Fund, 360 Harvey Street, Stapleton, GA 30823.

Lena Mae Jackson Green Stone
Mrs. Lena Mae Jackson Green Stone of Wadley died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002.

The funeral was Oct. 12 at 2 p.m. at One Way to God Apostolic Church in Wadley with the Rev. Jessie Adams officiating.

Survivors include eight daughters, Mary Bell Green, Alma Best, Lena Mae Stevenson, Nicely Vining, Lou Ann Simpkins, Betty Jackson, Adele Brown and Dorothy Strowbridge, all of Wadley; four sons, Leroy Green and Ulysses Green of Wadley and Willie Green and Amos Green of Atlanta; one brother, Henry Jackson, Brunswick; 42 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and four great great-grandchildren.

Hudson Mortuary was in charge of the arrangements.

Becky Wells
Mr. Becky Wells, 58, of Wrens died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, at the Medical College of Georgia.

The funeral was Oct. 12 at 3 p.m. at Piney Grove Baptist Church, Gibson, with the Rev. Darrell Warthen officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Wise; two daughters, Angela Wise and Timika Wise, all of Wrens; a brother, Eugene Jackson of Jacksonville, Fla.; god brother and sister, Lofton (Beverly) Wright of Wrens; and two grandchildren.

Burnett Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Louis Dow Smith
Mr. Louis Dow Smith of Louisville died Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002, at the Heritage of Old Capital in Louisville.
Mr. Smith, a native of Wadley, was the son of the late Donovan and Annell Smith. He graduated from Wadley High School where he excelled in football. He worked at Smith Funeral Home in Wadley for many years and later with Hadden's IGA in Louisville. He was a member of the Kaolin Church of God, Sandersville.

A graveside service was held on Oct. 18 at 11 a.m. at the Wadley Cemetery with the Revs. Quint Shepherd and Tom Harrison officiating.

Survivors include a son, Louis Andrew Smith, Sandersville; two daughters Tracy (Scott) Smith Reece, Gainesville, Fla., and Ashley Lampp, Sandersville; one sister, Donna (Davey) Smith Lamb, Wadley; and two grandchildren, Paige and Scotty Reece of Gainesville, Fla.

Memorials may be made to the Kaolin Church of God Building Fund, P.O. Box 223, Sandersville, GA 31082.

Anne Baxter Carter
Mrs. Anne Baxter Carter of Decatur died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002.

Mrs. Carter grew up in Louisville and was a graduate of Louisville Academy. She attended Georgia Southern College in Statesboro and Crawford W. Long School of Nursing. She was a former president of the DeKalb County Medical Auxiliary, former president of the DeKalb County Garden Club and a member of Druid Hills Country Club.

She was the daughter of the late William Ellington and Annie Gordon Baxter. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Leon Carter Jr.; a brother, W.E. (Billy) Baxter and a sister, Mrs. Josephine Baxter Flowers.

The funeral was Oct. 17 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of A.S. Turner and Sons. Burial was at Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

Survivors include a daughter, Anita C. Fox-Walker; two sons, Virgil Leon Carter III and James Kelley Carter; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Baxter Smith of Tifton and Mrs. Bess Baxter Shirley of Macon; five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Atlanta, 1244 Park Vista Drive NE, Atlanta, GA 30319.

Robert H. (Bob) Foerster
Mr. Robert H. (Bob) Foerster, 80, of Sylvester died Sunday, Oct. 13, 2002, at Oconee Regional Hospital in Milledgeville.

Mr. Foerster, a native of Cleveland, Ohio, had lived in Worth County since 1958. He was retired from the United States Postal Service after 16 years. He was a Navy veteran of WW II and a member of Salem Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Theresa Harsh Foerster.

The funeral was Oct. 16 at 2 p.m. at Salem Baptist Church with the Rev. Ralph Simmons officiating. Burial was in Salem Baptist Church Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Etta Barfield Foerster; two sons, Eugene A. (Doris) Foerster, Wadley, and Kyle (Christine) Foerster, Sylvester; a daughter, Linda (Mack) Collins, Sylvester; two brothers, John Foerster and Frankie Foerster, both of Cleveland, Ohio; two sisters, Berniece Bay, Canton, Ohio, and June Wollerman, Cleveland; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Banks Funeral Home, Sylvester, was in charge of the arrangements.

Richard H. Furr
Mr. Richard H. Furr, 82, of Gibson died Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002, in the St. Joseph Hospital.

Mr. Furr, a native of Mississippi, had lived in Gibson for several years. He was a retired Colonel from the U.S. Air Force. He was a Baptist.

The funeral was Oct. 19 in the Curtis Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Wayne Bruner officiating. Burial was in Westview Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. June Furr, Gibson; a daughter, Dawn Furr, Chapel Hill, NC; a son, Bob Furr, Nagshead, NC; two step-daughters, Vicki Montgomery and Lynn Neal, both of Thomson; and six grandchildren.
