Lee Edward "Snake" Walden
Mr. Lee Edward "Snake" Walden, 43, of Louisville died Tuesday, April 29, 2003.
Mr. Walden, a native of Jefferson County, was a member of the St. Paul Baptist Church and a retired welder.

The funeral was May 3 at 2 p.m. at St. Paul Baptist Church with the Rev. Eric Best officiating. Burial was in the Louisville Society Cemetery.

Survivors include his children, Shemika Bostic, NY, Cherelle Walden, Lee Edward Walden Jr., Travis Walden and Eliesha L. Walden, Louisville; his siblings, Charlie "Beam" Bractley, Dennie "Knight" Jordan, Nola Mae Cunningham, Barbara Ann Jenkins and Robert "Hawk" Walden, all of Louisville; two aunts, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

Davis Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Jessie H. McGahee
Mrs. Jessie H. McGahee, 74, of Avera died Sunday, April 27, 2003 at Glendale Nursing Home.

Mrs. McGahee was retired from Mac's Power Gas Corp. and was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

The funeral was April 30 at 2 p.m. at James Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Ray Sullivan and Donald Lumpkin officiating. Burial was in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Gleman McGahee; a son, Robert Mickey McGahee, Clewiston, Fla.; two brothers, Troy Hadden and Jerry Hadden, both of Avera; four sisters, Lois Leland, Vancleave, Miss., Betty Irby, Mary Rooks and Barbara Sammons, Avera; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Pallbearers were Mike McGahee, Joey Rooks, Eric Hadden, Lee Sammons, Ronnie Jones, Charles Hadden, Joe Irby and Jimmy Davis.

Willie Sam Gilmore
Dea. Willie Sam Gilmore of Wrens died Saturday, April 26, 2003.

Dea. Gilmore was a resident of Thomson Manor.

The funeral was May 2 at 2 p.m. at Thankful Baptist Church, Glascock County, with the Rev. Leroy Hudson officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include his daughter, Melissa Irby, Wrens; his sons, Willie Paul Gilmore, Augusta, Phillip Roy Gilmore, Bennetville, SC, Martin Luther Gilmore, Augusta; three sisters, Mildred Harden, Tennille, Christine Lamar, Atlanta, and Dorothy Crenshaw, Dalton; two brothers, Dea. James Roy Gilmore, Perrine, Fla., and Bishop Herman (Janeth) Gilmore, Thomson; and 10 grandchildren.

Burnett Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Louise Norris
Ms. Louise Norris, 61, of Thomson died Friday, April 25, 2003.

Ms. Norris, a native of McDuffie County, was a member of Bethel AM Church, Norwood. She was preceded in death by a sister, Annie Lee Norris.

The funeral was May 1 at 2 p.m. at Springfield Baptist Church in Thomson with the Rev. Bennie Buyer as Eulogist. Burial was in Westview Cemetery.

Survivors include two sons, Gregory Norris and Cedric Norris; two daughters, Pamela Norris and Nerrissa Norris, all of Thomson; her father, Clyde Norris, Jacksonville, Fla.; three brothers, Johnnie J. Norris and Johnny (Mickey) Gaye Jr., both of Thomson, and Robert E. Norris, Wadley; two sisters, Linda Norris Washington, Louisville, Doris Holmes Williams, Jacksonville; 20 grandchildren and several other relatives.

Thomson Funeral System was in charge of the arrangements.

Richard Lee Stidons
Mr. Richard Lee Stidons, 53, of Wrens died Wednesday, April 30, 2003.

The funeral was May 4 at 2 p.m. at Flat Rock Baptist Church with the Rev. Ricky Dent officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Essie Mae Jenkins Stidons; two daughters, Erica Stidons and Emma Jean Stidons, Waynesboro; two sons, Richard Lee Stidons Jr., Augusta, and Randy Birt, Wrens; five sisters, Joyce Ann Scott, Matthews, Mary Thomas, Stapleton, Betty Jean Boyd and Renell Stidons, Wrens, and Mary Bell Cooper, Louisville; and one brother, Charlie Willie Stidons, Wrens.

Freeman Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Sarah Brooks Usry
Mrs. Sarah Brooks Usry, 83, of Wrens died Monday, May 5, 2003.

Mrs. Usry, a native of Warren County, retired from Key Wholesalers and was a member of Little Briar Creek Church. She was preceded in death by her father, Hobert Brooks, her mother, Sallie Reeves and her husband, Ben Usry.

The funeral was May 7 at 4 p.m. at Little Briar Creek Church with the Revs. Randy Dunaway and Bill Seaman officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include two brothers, Bob Brooks, Gibson, Leon Brooks, Calif.; three sisters, Betty Bryant, Thomson, Ruby Walden, Wrens, and Margaret Berry, Augusta; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Terry Curtis, Tommy Hayes, Bennett Clark, Milton Berry Sr., Milton Berry Jr., Johnny McGahee and Lester Hadden.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 1725, Augusta, GA 30903.

Billy E. Chalker
Mr. Billy E. Chalker, 72, of Avera died Thursday, May 8, 2003, at Gibson Health and Rehabilitation Center in Gibson.
Mr. Chalker, a native of Glascock County, was a member of the Gibson Church of God.

The funeral was May 10 at 2 p.m. at Magnolia Baptist Church, Gibson, with the Rev. Roy White officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. He was preceded in death by a son, Tony Chalker.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Marlene E. Chalker; his son, Derry T. (Lisa) Chalker Sr., Virginia Beach, Va.; his daughter, Terry (Frank) Parrish, Stapleton; grandchildren, Toni Lynn and Greg Brooks, Paul F. Parrish Jr., Clay and Tara Parrish, Cody Parrish, Tony Chalker, Derry Chalker and Victoria Chalker; and a great-grandchild, Jared Brooks.

Pallbearers were Keith Walden, Richard Walden, Greg Walden, Paul F. Parrish Jr., Mike Chalker and Tanny Prescott.

Sheppard Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Emma Ruth Wren Dozier
Mrs. Emma Ruth Wren Dozier, 94, of Augusta died Saturday, May 10, 2003, at Kentwood Nursing Home.

Mrs. Dozier, a native of Jefferson County, lived in Augusta most of her life. She was a graduate of Burke Junior College and was a school teacher and homemaker. She was a member of the First Baptist Church where she was director of the two-year old Sunday School Department for 35 years. She was a member of the Anna Bannister Sunday School Class and sang in the First Family Singers Choir. She played the piano for church services at Kentwood Nursing Home for several years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Irvin Dozier.

The funeral was May 13 at First Baptist Church with Dr. Timothy Owings and the Rev. Jacob Malone officiating. Burial was in Westover Memorial Park.

Survivors include two daughters, Ruth Ann Buckner and Martha Dozier Tanner, Augusta; a son, Walter Irvin Dozier Jr., Fayetteville; nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were her grandsons, David Eugene Tanner, John Alan Buckner, Stephen Robert Tanner, Scott Walter Dozier, Todd Michael Dozier and Christopher Paul Dozier. The Anna Bannister Sunday School class was honorary pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to the Chapel Fund of the First Baptist Church.

Willie Lee "Poor Boy" Smith
Mr. Willie Lee "Poor Boy" Smith, 55, of Wrens died Monday, May 5, 2003, at Jefferson Hospital.

The funeral was May 10 at 11 a.m. at Ways Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Jimmy McCullough officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include a daughter, Diane Hannah; four sisters, Lucille (Willy Irby) Matthews and Mary Lou (Eugene) Lockhart, all of Wrens, Elizabeth Jackson and Nelly Mae (Woodrow) Scott, all of Augusta; three brothers, Cleveland (Johnnie Mae) Smith and Robert (Joanne) Smith, all of Wrens, Alex (Mae Alice) Smith, Augusta; a devoted friend, Earlene Lattimore, Wrens; five grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Burnett Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Dennis L. Stevens
Mr. Dennis L. Stevens, 77, of Blythe died Sunday, May 11, 2003, at St. Joseph Hospital.

Mr. Stevens was retired from the Air Force after serving 30 years during World War II, Korea and Vietnam Wars. He was also formerly employed with Plant Vogtle.

Graveside services were held May 15 at 2 p.m. at Keysville United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Buddy Frieson officiating.

Survivors include his wife, Rita Stevens; seven sisters, Malissie Newman, Blythe, Ann Taylor, Keysville, Lois Upchurch, Wrens, Joan Farmer, Fitchburg, Mass., Jane Underwood, Kingsman, Ind., Ricky Prescott, Moorehaven, Fla. and Bonnie Stevens, Shrewsburn, Mass.

Pallbearers will be Air Force Military.

Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Hospice, 2260 Wrightsboro Rd., Augusta, GA 30904.

Annie Grace Carroll
Miss Annie Grace Carroll of Goodwell, Okla., died Tuesday, May 13, 2003 at Integris Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City.
The prayer service was held May 14 at 7 p.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church, Oklahoma City. The Mass of Christian Burial was May 15 at 2 p.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church with the Rev. Richard Stansberry and Dr. Glenn Millard officiating. Burial was in Yukon Cemetery, Yukon, Okla.

Survivors include her parents, Stephen and Teri Carroll of Goodwell; her grandparents, Thomas J. and Karen A. Gleason of El Reno, Okla., and Rev. Emmitt and Katherine Carroll of Wrens; and many aunts and uncles.

Memorials may be made to Scholarship Fund at Trinity School, 1120 E. Hefner Road, Oklahoma City, OK 73131 or Goodwell Booster Club, P.O. Box 580, Goodwell, OK 73939.

Johnny Hunter
Mr. Johnny Hunter of Wadley died Thursday, May 1, 2003, at Medical College of Georgia in Augusta.

Mr. Hunter, a native of Richmond County, was employed at the former St. Eve Lingerie Factory and was later a self-employed barber in Wadley.

The funeral was May 7 at 2 p.m. at Hudson Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Dr. David Kemp officiating. Burial was in the Live Oak Cemetery.

Survivors include a daughter, Jonice Williams, Louisville; two sons, Michael Price, Wadley and Jontavian Harris, Midville; two step-daughters, Carmella Rabb and Valencia Gaines, both of Wadley; a stepson, James Rabb, Wadley; one brother, Ephriam Hunter, Wadley; three sisters, Mary Hunter, Wadley, Evelyn (Lester) Williams, Augusta and Geanetta Williams, Boston, Mass.; his mother, Mae Lois Hunter, Wadley; his maternal grandmother, Mamie Lou Hunter, Wadley; a special friend, Berness Rabb; and several aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives.

Hudson Mortuary was in charge of the arrangements.

Carl Woodrow Smith
Mr. Carl Woodrow Smith, 83, died May 16, 2003, in Athens.

Mr. Smith, a native of Louisville, was the son of William Young Smith and Irene Taylor Smith. He was a veteran of WWII and a graduate of the University of Georgia. He retired after 33 years of service with the United States Department of Agriculture. He attended Faith Presbyterian Church.

A memorial service was held on May 20 at 9:30 a.m. at Faith Presbyterian Church in Watkinsville. Burial was at 2:30 p.m. in the Louisville Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Alexa Stone Smith; three children, William Y. Smith II, Carl W. (Tad) Smith Jr. and Jessalyn S. Pittman; one sister, Mildred S. Williams; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Smith Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Henry Whit "HW" Brown
Mr. Henry Whit "HW" Brown of Wrens died Sunday, May 18, 2003.
The funeral was May 22 at 2 p.m. at New Hope AME Church with the Rev. C.W. Stone, eulogist, and the Rev. Robert Edwards, pastor, officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include two children, Carlene Sims and Edward Bernard Brown; four sisters, Lorea Gibbons, Carrie Gaston, Ammie Davis and Minnie Love; and two brothers, Willie James Brown and Adolpha Brown.
