Willis B. Gilmore Sr.
Mr. Willis B. Gilmore Sr. of Louisville died Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, at Jefferson Hospital.

Mr. Gilmore, a native of Washington County, moved to Louisville in 1998. He was a member of Neeler AME Church in Davisboro. He worked for many years and retired from the Holmes Canning Company in Sandersville.

The funeral was Aug. 14 at 1 p.m. at the Neeler African Methodist Episcopal Church with the Revs. Henry Tanner and Carl Johnson officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Pearlie Mae Gilmore, Louisville; his children, Lucille Robinson, Queen, N.Y., Gwen (Curtis) Thompson, Phyillis (Curt) Davis and Willis B. Gilmore Jr., Louisville, Waymon (Elnora) Jefferson and Pam (Dennard) Branon, Jacksonville, Fla., Daisy (Dale) Battle, Wrens, Gloria (Wiley) Watts, Sandersville; four sisters, Mary (Walter) Horton, Atlanta, Dorothy Gilmore and Delois Smith, Augusta, and Anita Carlyle, Davisboro; two brothers, Griffin Gilmore, Augusta, and Roy Gilmore, New Jersey; 14 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; one grand-daughter-in-law, three sisters-in-law, one daughter-in-law, four sons-in-law and several nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

Davis Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Bobby Paul
Mr. Bobby Paul, 64, of Wrens died Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004, at Medical College of Georgia.

Mr. Paul, a native of Jefferson County, was a meat cutter at Hadden's Grocery Store for over 30 years. He was a Baptist.

Graveside services were Aug. 16 at 2 p.m. at Mt. Horeb Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Race Lariscy officiating.

Survivors include his mother, Beatrice Paul, Louisville; a brother, Ray Paul, Harlem; two nieces and one nephew.

Honorary pallbearers were employees of Hadden's IGA Grocery Stores.

James Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Sarah Jean Smith
Mrs. Sarah Jean Smith of North Augusta, S.C., died Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004.

Mrs. Smith, a native of Jefferson County, was retired from Seminole Mills and Aiken Industries. She was a member of Langley Pentecostal Holiness Church where she was active with the Senior's group and Cub Scout Pack #351. She was preceded in death by a brother, William Randolph Johnson.

The funeral was Aug. 19 at 10 a.m. at the Hatcher Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Gene Brown, Buster Youngblood and Dennis Johnson officiating. Burial was in Magnolia Baptist Church Cemetery, Gibson.

Survivors include her husband, William E. "Bill" Smith Sr.; her daughters, Toni and Charles Fennell, Augusta, Terri and Mike Lyons, North Augusta, and Tina and Larry Kuhn, Gloverville, S.C.; her son, William E. "Billy" Jr. and Sherry Smith, North Augusta; her sisters, Joanne Hadden, Augusta, and Deborah Jackson, Crawfordville; her brothers, Dennis Johnson, Batesburg, S.C., and Jamie Johnson, Watkinsville; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Mike Hamien, Matthew Johnson, Robert Gay, Richard Pennington, Ken Stanley and Robert Workman.

Honorary pallbearers were members of Cub Scout Pack #351.

Hatcher Funeral Home, Langley, S.C., was in charge of the arrangements.

Alice Alexander Chesnut
Mrs. Alice Alexander Chesnut of Big Canoe died Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004.

Mrs. Chestnut, a native of Louisville, attended Erskine College in Due West, SC. She spearheaded many projects at Bonclarken in North Carolina. She was preceded in death by her husband, James D. Chesnut.

The funeral was Aug. 10 at 1 p.m. at McDonald and Son Funeral Home Chapel in Cumming with the Rev. John Dorr and Dr. Jack Heinsohn officiating. Burial was in Prosperity Cemetery in Chamblee.

Survivors include her daughter, Mary Alice Chestnut; her son and his wife, Alex and Reginal Chesnut, Big Canoe; a sister, Zaida Alexander Orr, Miami, Fla.; two grandsons, seven great-grandchildern; two nephews, Jim Alexander, Waynesboro, and Joe Orr, Miami, Fla.; and two nieces, Ann Bryant and Rosallyn Martin, Louisville.

McDonald and Son Funeral Home and Crematory, Cumming, was in charge of the arrangements.

Martin T. Johnson Sr.
Mr. Martin T. Johnson Sr., 57, of Gibson died Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004, at Eisenhower Medical Center at Fort Gordon.

Mr. Johnson was a member of the Gibson Church of God. He was retired after 21 years of service in the Army Airborne Division where he served as culinary chef and also taught others how to be a chef. He earned a Purple Heart in the Vietnam War, infantry division.

Funeral services with full military honors will be Aug. 12 at 11 a.m. at the Gibson Church of God with the Revs. Richard Kitchens and Steve Lamb officiating. Burial will be in Bethel UMC Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Nora "Candy" Brooks Johnson; two sons, Martin Thomas Johnson Jr., Gibson, and Tommy Malcolm and Roxanne Johnson, Norfolk, Va.; one daughter, Annamarie and Chris Kitchens, Dearing; two grandchildren, Brittany and Breanna Kitchens, Dearing; his mother and stepfather, Florene and Ken Kurtz, Melbourne, Fla.; one brother, John M. and Renee Johnson, Annapolis, Md.; two sisters-in-law; one nephew and one niece.

Pallbearers are Lester Newsome, Charles Hadden, Mike Lyons, Thomas Chalker, Julian Kitchens and Talmadge Chalker.

Sheppard Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Mozell "Maw Maw" Owens Smith
Mrs. Mozell "Maw Maw" Owens Smith, 77, died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004.

Mrs. Smith, a native of Warren County, lived in McCormick, SC, for the past five years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph "Bill" Stering Smith and son, Milton Eugene Hobbs. She was a Jehovah's Witness.

The funeral was Aug. 6 at 4 p.m. at Overbrook Cemetery, McCormick, S.C.

Survivors include two sons, Sterling "Billy" Joseph Smith, Thomson, and James "Monroe" Smith, Gibson; three daughters, LaVern Smith Nelson, McCormick, Odamae Hernadez, Wrens, and Minnie Jean Warner, North Augusta; one sister, Inez Thomson; 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Strom Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Richard Avery New
Mr. Richard Avery New of Louisville died Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004.

Mr. New was born in Lithonia. He was a Baptist.

Graveside services were Aug. 11 at 2 p.m. at Bellevue Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Michael Davenport officiating.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Ruth New, Gadsden, Ala.; a twin brother, Robert A. New, Martinez; four sisters, Dorothy B. Manley, Danville, Va., Betty J. and Myron Gaddis, Martinez, Barbara Ann Collins, Blairs, Va., Yvonne Jones King, Martinez; and several nieces and nephews.

Thomas L. King Funeral Home, Martinez, was in charge of the arrangements.

William "Ed" Brassell
Mr. William "Ed" Brassell, 77, of Hephzibah died Monday, July 26, 2004, at the VA Medical Center.

Mr. Brassell was born in Gibson to the late William A. and Mary S. Allen Brassell. He was a US Navy veteran of WWII and Aretired from Continental Can as a millwright machinist. He attended Burns Memorial United Methodist Church. He is predeceased by a son, William Neil Brassell.

The funeral was July 29 at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Hatcher Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Burch and Mr. Rod Blomfield officiating. Burial was in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Survivors include his wife, Ann McKenzie Brassell; a daughter, Tonya Dickens, Hephzibah; four brothers, Gene Brassell, Hephzibah, Lloyd Brassell, Gibson, Lee Brassell, Augusta, and Jack Brassell, McDonough; a sister, Mary Walden, Gibson; two grandsons, Joshua Dickens and Tyler Pruitt; and several nephews and nieces.

Pallbearers were Chris Brassell, Tim Carver, James Carver, Brady Brassell, Troy Kitchens and Marty Tant.

Memorials may be made to Burns Memorial United Methodist Church Elevator Fund, 2372 Lumpkin Road, Augusta, GA 30906; or in memory of William Neil Brassell, c/o Walton Rehabilitation Health System, 1355 Independence Drive, Augusta, GA 30901.

Christopher "Crick" McZilkey
Mr. Christopher "Crick" McZilkey, 30, of Gibson died Monday, July 26, 2004, at Medical College of Georgia in Augusta.

Mr. McZilkey was a native of Richmond County but lived in Glascock County most of his life. He was employed by Guthrie Grading and Hauling in Thomson.

The funeral was July 29 at 11 a.m. at Bethel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Sam Collins and Richard Kitchens officiating.

Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Ann Lampp Marsh, Gibson; his father, Danny J. McZilkey, Harlem; one brother, Darrell McZilkey, Gibson; and one sister, Dawn Lampp, Gibson.

Pallbearers were Marion Guthrie, David Guthrie, Larry Roshier, Billy Howard, Steve Hart and Willie Brett.

Sheppard Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Earl Chancey Tilson
Mr. Earl Chancey Tilson, 70, of Midville died Monday, July 26, 2004, at Burke County Hospital.

Mr. Tilson, a native of Burke County, lived in New York most of his life. He was a veteran of the US Air Force, a retired supervisor with the New York Public Transit Department, a bailiff with the Burke County Court and a member and steward at St. Paul AME Church, Midville.

The funeral was July 30 at 1 p.m. at St. Paul AME Church with the Revs. Bettye Stephens and Minnie Pitts officiating. Burial was in the Church Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Doris Saunders Tilson, Midville; one son, Anthony Tilson, Brooklyn, N.Y.; his mother-in-law, Elizabeth Saunders, Wadley; one grandchild; two sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law, three aunts, one uncle, and several nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

Davis Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Adam Kent Sr.
Mr. Adam Kent Sr., 58, of Gibson died Sunday, July 25, 2004, at University Hospital in Augusta.

Mr. Kent was born in Glascock County to the late Watson Kent and Willie Bell Whitehead Kent. He had lived in Warren County several years. He was retired as a laborer. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Warrenton.

The funeral was July 28 at 2 p.m. at Sallie Hill Cemetery in Warrenton with the Rev. Rob Bray officiating.

Survivors include two sons, Adam Kent Jr., Ooltewah, Tenn., and Glenn Kent, Thomson; one daughter, Lynn Kent, Gibson; four grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Lowe Funeral Home, P.O. Box 488, Warrenton, GA 30828.

Lucile Prescott Evans
Mrs. Lucile Prescott Evans, 88, of Lexington died Tuesday, July 20, 2004.

Mrs. Evans, a native of McDuffie County, was head teller with Citizens Banking Company. She was active in numerous civic organizations including UDC and Lexington Womens Club. She was a member of Lexington Baptist Church. She was the daughter of the late Nathan Lee and Gertrude Guy Prescott. She was predeceased by her husband, Ed Evans, and a brother, Eddie Lee Prescott.

The funeral was July 23 at 11 a.m. at Lexington Baptist Church with the Revs. Don Leaptrott and Harry Warren officiating. Burial was at 3 p.m. in Woodland Baptist Church Cemetery.

Survivors include her daughter, Nancy and J.K. McWhorter, Athens; two sons, Bill and Smokey Evans, Athens, and Joe Evans, Milledgeville; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Jimmy Germany, Charlie Crawford, Emmett Caldwell, Wade Grant, Rollin Thaxton and Jacob Day.

Memorials may be made to Lexington Baptist Church.

Lord and Stephens Oglethorpe Chapel, Crawford, was in charge of the arrangements.
