William "Bill" Gibbons
Mr. William "Bill" Gibbons, 69, of Louisville died Sunday, May 2, 2004, at University Hospital.

Mr. Gibbons, a native of Jefferson County, was a member of Hardeman Springfield Baptist Church and Zion Wheel Society.

The funeral was May 6 at 2 p.m. at Hardeman Springfield Baptist Church with the Rev. Fred Ricks officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Lorea Brown Gibbons; his children, Joe Lewis Gibbons, William Gibbons Jr., Diane Brown, Florence Jean Cunningham, Brenda Yancey and Leon Gibbons, Louisville, Larry Gibbons, Jacksonville, Fla., and Shirley Denise Monroe, Marlboro, Md.; his sisters, Julia Gibbons and Ethel Baker, Augusta, Gladys Beatly, N. Las Vegas, Nev., and Ida McNeatt, Champaign, Ill.; 14 grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, four brothers-in-law and many other relatives.

Davis Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Johnnie D. Holley
Mr. Johnnie D. Holley, 75, of Wadley died Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at Medical College of Georgia Hospital in Augusta.

Funeral services were held April 29 at 11 a.m. at Smith Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tom Harrison officiating. Burial was in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Dellwood.

Survivors include a sister, Sarah H. Beard; three half sisters, June Lasher, Sharon Scott and Barbara Skipper; a half brother, Danny Holley; and several nieces and nephews.

Tomlinson Funeral Home, Swainsboro, was in charge of the arrangements.

Geneva Crum Milburn
Mrs. Geneva Crum Milburn, 88, of Stapleton died Friday, April 30, 2004.

Mr. Milburn was a member of Waldens United Methodist Church. She is preceded in death by her husband Walter E. Milburn.

The funeral was May 2 at 4 p.m. at Waldens United Methodist Church with the Rev. Marvin Goodman and Dr. Michael Felz officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include three sons, W. Durham Milburn, Edgehill, Maron Milburn and Hiram Milburn, Stapleton; one daughter, Jennie Milburn, Stapleton; two sisters, Elvie Eddings, Blytheville, Ark., and Mary Stanfield, Caranthe, Miss.; 13 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Bennett Howard, Paul Brown, Gary Rhodes, Charlie Davis, Johnny McGahee, Fay McGahee and Harold McGahee.

Honorary pallbearers were members of the Senior Adult Sunday School Class.

Memorials may be made to the Waldens United Methodist Church Building Fund, 1760 Walden Church Road, Avera, GA 30803.

Jimmy Lee Usry Sr.
Mr. Jimmy Lee Usry Sr. of Augusta died Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at the V.A. Medical Center.

Mr. Usry, a native of Jefferson County, was a U.S. Army veteran. He was owner of Simpson Trucking Company.

The funeral was May 2 at 2 p.m. at 2 p.m. at B.A. Williams Memorial Chapel with Roland W. Cumbee Jr. officiating. Burial was at Stone Springfield Baptist Church Cemetery in Wrens.

Survivors include five daughters, Yolanda Usry, Little Rock, Ark., Tajuana Usry, Miami, Fla., Tralynn Usry, Cleo Usry, Jakira Diamonique Usry and Jamie Usry, Augusta; three sons, Jimmy (Sheila) Usry Jr., Snellville, Brandon Usry and Rashad Usry, Augusta; two sisters, Barbara Haywood, New Jersey, and Mary Catherine Davis, Macon; three brothers, Phillip Usry, North Augusta, Melvin Usry, Wrens, and Michael Usry, Fla.; two grandchildren and several other relatives.

Williams Funeral Home, Hephzibah, was in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Lewis Thompson, 82, of North Augusta died Friday, April 30, 2004.

Mr. Thompson, a native of Avera, lived in North Augusta for the past 76 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church of North Augusta, the Campbell Sunday School Class and the Sheffield Club. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a retired letter carrier with the Augusta Post Office, a member of the Retired Letter Association Branch #263 and NARAF, a master gardener and attended Clemson University. He was the predeceased by his wife, Mrs. Vita Scott Thompson.

The funeral was May 4 at 2 p.m. at the Stephen D. Posey Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry T. Matthews officiating. Burial was in Pineview Memorial Gardens with Military Honors.

Survivors include a son, Scott and Marcy Thompson, North Augusta; a daughter, Gayle and Steve Virgo, North Augusta; and three grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Rick Hargrove, Travis Hargrove, Steve Thompson, Steve Virgo, JonPaul Virgo and Perry Thomasson.

Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Hospice, 2260 Wrightsboro Road, Augusta, GA 30904.

Stephen D. Posey Funeral Home, North Augusta, was in charge of the arrangements.

Jack Darling Smith
Mr. Jack Darling Smith, 84, of Wadley died Thursday, April 29, 2004, at Fairview Park Hospital in Dublin.

Mr. Smith, born in Madison, Fla., had lived in Wadley since 1970. He served as minister of Wadley United Methodist Church in 1955 through 1960, Sylvania United Methodist Church in 1960 through 1964 and Dublin First United Methodist in 1964 thru 1968. He was a veteran of WWII where he served in the Army Air Corp stationed in England. He was currently publisher of Tid Bits of Dublin He was a member of Wadley United Methodist Church.

The funeral was May 1 at 11 a.m. at Wadley United Methodist Church with the Revs. Larry Sauls and Tom Oliver officiating. Burial was in the Northside Cemetery in Dublin.

Survivors include his wife, Jane Smith; two daughters, Lyndell Smith, Baltimore, Md., and Joan Cole, Panama City Beach, Fla.; a son, Walton Smith, Columbia, SC; a brother, A.C. Smith, Pass Christian, Miss.; and four grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Joe Pundt, Danny Crego, Austin Rheny and Sonny Gaston.

Honorary pallbearers were Louie Handberry and Tommy Fulghum.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or Yorkside Terrier Rescue Network, P.O. Box 703, Wadley, GA 30477.

Bessie P. Williams
Mrs. Bessie P. Williams of Matthews died Friday, April 30, 2004.

Mrs. Williams, a native of Smithville, Tenn., attended Augusta First Church of the Nazarene. Through the years she served as Missionary President and Sunday School Teacher in Virginia and Georgia. She was employed with the Civil Service and the Department of the Interior in Washington, D.C.

The funeral was May 3 at 2 p.m. at James Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Dwight DeNegly and Hilton Gillespie officiating. Burial was in Westover Memorial Park.

Survivors include her sons, Dwight DeNegly, Birmingham, Ala., Craig Williams, Augusta; one special granddaughter, Christie Williams, Smyrna; and her caregiver, Doris Stewart.

Memorials may be made to Augusta First Church of the Nazarene Missions (NMI), 2044 Lumpkin Road, Augusta, GA 30906.

Jack Terry Ellenberg Sr.
Mr. Jack Terry Ellenberg Sr., 67, of Hephzibah died Sunday, April 25, 2004, at University Hospital.

The funeral was April 28 at 2 p.m. at James Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James Moore officiating. Burial was in the Davisboro City Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann Ellenberg; a son, Jack Terry and Sonia Ellenberg Jr., Augusta; three daughters, Belinda and Rick Rameriz, Linda Renea and Tony Barnes, and Pamela and Mike Gregory, all of Hephzibah; a brother, H.G. Ellenberg, Warner Robins; two sisters, Margaret Wahlumuth, Kansas City, Mo., Neil Rogers, Augusta; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Pallbearers were Tony Moore, Paul Rogers, Jim Rogers, Eddie Williams, Tim Flakes, Jack Godown Jr., David Ennis and Robbie Huff.

James Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Nancy Bufort Lamb McNeely
Mrs. Nancy Bufort Lamb McNeely of Americus died Tuesday, April 20, 2004.

Mrs. McNeely, a native of Augusta, was the daughter of Dowe Peterson Carter of Americus and Mr. and Mrs. Sammie Lamb of Grovetown. She taught in the Jefferson County School System. She was also a respiratory therapist at Sumnter Regional Hospital and Crisp Regional Hospital. She was a NALS and CPR instructor. She earned degrees at Georgia Southwestern University, University of Georgia and California College for Health Science.

Graveside services were April 23 at 11 a.m. in the Wadley Cemetery with the Rev. Tom Harrison officiating.

Survivors include her husband, Michael S. McNeely; her parents, Dowe Peterson Carter and Mr. and Mrs. Sammie Lamb; two brothers, Pound and Elizabeth Lamb, Nashville, and Richie Lamb; a sister, Nancy Lamb; her grandmother, Mary Julia Peterson, Wadley; a nephew, Clay Peterson Lamb, Nashville; and her constant companion, Dolly.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or Hospice of Americus and Sumter County, P.O. Box 1434, Americus, GA 31709.

Amie Prescott
Mrs. Amie Prescott, 88, of Wrens died Sunday, April 25, 2004, at Burke Medical Center.

Mrs. Prescott was a homemaker and a lifelong resident of the Matthews and Wrens communities. She was a member of the Wrens Church of the Nazarene. She is preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Beatrice Johnson; her husband, William Lee Prescott; a son, Bryant Prescott; a sister Mozelle Newman; and a daughter-in-law Barbara Prescott.

The funeral was April 27 at 2 p.m. at James Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. William Ansley officiating. Burial was in Mount Moriah Cemetery.

Survivors include three sons, Norwood Prescott, Keysville, Rowan "Roy" and Linda Prescott, Hephzibah, and Hank Prescott, Wrens; four daughters, Bernice P. and Bill Arrington, Matthews, Helen P. Howard, Augusta, Janice P. and Bruce Dowdy, Wrens, and Wanda P. and Johnny McGahee, Stapleton; a daughter-in-law, Sherry Huff Prescott, Keysville; 18 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren; six great great-grandchildren; a brother, Charles Johnson, Stellaville; and two sisters, Dorothy Edgar, Augusta and Barbara Moore, Wrightsville.

Pallbearers were Jeff Arrington, Samuel McGahee, Tanny Prescott, Steve Howard, Jimmy Pittman, Alan Rabun and Tommy Poole.

Memorials may be made to the Wrens Church of the Nazarene, 17400 Highway 1, North, Wrens, GA 30833.

Irving C. Amerson
Mr. Irving C. Amerson, 76, of Wrens died Tuesday, April 13, 2004, at St. Joseph Hospital.

Mr. Amerson, a native of Jefferson County, worked and retired as a painter for auto paint and body shops in the area. He was a veteran of WWII having served in the U.S. Army.

Funeral services and burial were private.

Survivors include his wife, Bessie Mae Amerson; two daughters, Jan Grice, Hephzibah, and Tammy Ryan, Wrens; one grandson, Andrew Ryan; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 1899 Central Ave., Augusta, GA 30904.

Ms. Valerie Celeste Bell, 38, of Wadley died Tuesday, April 13, 2004, at Medical College of Georgia Hospital in Augusta.

The funeral was April 17 at noon at Taylor Funeral Home in Chicago, Ill. Burial was in Washington Memorial Gardens in Chicago.

Survivors include her children, PFC Antwan Bell, Korea, Alishia Bell, Felicia White, Quentin Bell, Michael Bell, Tasheena Bell, Keshon Bell, Jessica Bell, Keyon Bell and Jonyea Bell, all of Wadley; her siblings, Jamila Tiafa, Deborah Sharkey and Patricia Bell, all of Chicago, G. Alfred Bell, Sheboygen, Wisc., Alice Evans, Durham, NC, and Wanda Reeves, Tylerton, Miss.

Davis Funeral Home was in charge of local arrangements.

Ahmed A. Cason
Spc. Ahmed A. Cason, 24, of Birmingham, Ala., was killed in Iraq on Sunday, April 4, 2004.

Funeral services were April 12 at 11 a.m. at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Hoover, Ala. Burial was in Jefferson Memorial Gardens in Hoover.

Survivors include his wife, Allison Cason of Birmingham; one daughter, Akilaah B. Cason; one son, Gabriel E. Cason; his mother, Alinda Hunt, Pensacola, Fla.; two brothers, Bobby Cason and Cedrick K. Hunt Jr.; two sisters, Jamelia Hunt and Danita Hunt; his step-father, Cedrick Hunt; maternal grandmother, Mozell Thomas, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; paternal grandparents, Garland and Virlean Fisher, McGhee, Ariz.; and a special uncle, Wendell Hunt, Birmingham; and several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Jefferson county residents attending the funeral were his uncle, Gary Jones; great aunt, Alice Mae McBride; niece Gabrielle Jones; cousins, Brenda Williams, Eldrick Williams, Leotis (Ethel) McBride and Mary Walker; and a family friend, Sandra Hickson.
