Ruby Hattaway
Mrs. Ruby Hattaway of Louisville died Saturday, March 6, 2004.

Mrs. Hattaway was a lifelong resident of Louisville. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Louisville and retired from Jefferson Hospital and the Louisville Shirt Company. She is preceded in death by her husband Paul Hattaway.

The funeral was March 8 at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Louisville with the Rev. Larry L. Montgomery officiating. Burial was in Louisville City Cemetery.

Survivors include her sister, Mollie Cowan, Louisville; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Ben Scott, Scotty Scott, Robert Cowan, Jeff Dekle, Marty Banks and Danny Read.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Louisville, 101 East Ninth Street, Louisville, GA30434.

Stephen D. Posey Funeral Home, North Augusta, was in charge of the arrangements.

Barbara Oliphant Hefner
Ms. Barbara Oliphant Hefner, 53, of Thomson died Saturday, March 6, 2004.

Ms. Hefner, a native of Jefferson County, had lived in Thomson for many years. She was a material manager at Augusta Coating and Manufacturing Company. She was a member of Ways Baptist Church but had been attending New Hope Baptist Church.

The funeral was March 9 at 11 a.m. at the New Hope Baptist Church with the Rev. Allen Holbrook officiating. Burial was in the Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens.

Survivors include two daughters, Marijane Hefner and Heather Warner, both of Thomson; her sister, Dianne Norris, Thomson; four brothers, Jack Oliphant Jr., Thomson, Tommy Oliphant, Warrenton, David Oliphant, Thomson, and Billy Oliphant, Grovetown; and two grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Robert Renew, Steve Smith, Andrew Swan, Newt Swan, Patrick Ivey and Charles Weisner.

Curtis Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.


Georgia Death Index 1919-1998

Jeanette H. Neal
Mrs. Jeanette H. Neal, 59, of Thomson died Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004.

Mrs. Neal was a native of Glascock County and a member of the New Life in Christ.

The funeral was March 4 at 2 p.m. at Thankful Baptist Church with the Rev. Elder Nathaniel Wilson officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Deacon Joseph Neal Sr.; one son, Joseph Neal Jr., Bronx, NY; two daughters, Pingular Neal, Gastonia, NC, and Kim Neal, Thomson; four sisters, Patricia Stokes, Eva Jean Harris Kitchens and Clara Bradshaw, all of Thomson, Janice Walker, New Jersey; three brothers, James Harris, Thomson, Wyman Harris and Lonzie Harris, both of Gibson; six grandchildren and several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, three aunts, one uncle, nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Thomson Funeral System was in charge of the arrangements.

Wilma Delores Braddy Jones
Mrs. Wilma Delores Braddy Jones died Saturday, March 6, 2004, at Dwight Eisenhower Army Medical Center.

Mrs. Jones, a native of Louisville, was a resident of Augusta for many years. She was a head unit clerk at the Medical College of Georgia for 23 years and a beautician for 20 years. At an early age she joined New Hope AME Church in Grange with which she is still affiliated. She was a loyal member of Williams Memorial CME Usher Board. She was the acting president of her 1958 graduating class of Lucy C. Laney High School.

The funeral will be March 11 at noon at Williams Memorial CME Church with the Rev. Gardner officiating. Burial will be in Grange at New Hope AME Church Cemetery.

Survivors include three sons, Theloniou, Quincy and Thelodis; a sister, Oena Braddy Grant, Louisville; a brother, Maldon Braddy, Augusta; sisters-in-law, Jennie Mae Braddy, Louisville, Regina Huff and Jeanette Jones; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Floyd "Peanut" Land
Mr. Floyd "Peanut" Land, 70, of Warrenton died Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004 at Medical College of Georgia Medical Center in Augusta.

Mr. Land was retired from the mobile home industry after 40 years. He was an Army veteran. He was a member of the Woodmen of the World Lodge #982.

The funeral was March 3 at 2 p.m. at Curtis Funeral Home Chapel with Bishop George Nichols and Mr. Doug Grimes officiating. Burial was in Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret W. Land, Warrenton; a daughter, Ree Smallwood, Warrenton; a son, Allen Land, Warrenton; a sister Sara Wilkinson, Thomson; one special aunt, Clemmie Mahaffey, Willford, SC; and five grandchildren, Shae Smallwood, Zakk Smallwood, Jordan Land, Shelby Land and Tanner Land.

Pallbearers were Ronnie Pilgrim, Hugh Hobbs, David Harper, Greg Johnson, Donald Palmer and Lauren English.

Honorary pallbearers were Bobby Williams, Bill Harper, Lee Griffin, Dwayne Cowins, Roger Burton and Marvin Norman.

Curtis Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Roy M. Peebles
Mr. Roy M. Peebles, 76, of Smyrna died Monday, March 1, 2004.

Mr. Peebles, a native of Glascock County, was a member of American Legion Post 160. He was in the U.S. Naval Seabees, serving in World War II in Guam. He was employed as a machinist with McCormick and Hardee Pak Foods. He was an inventor and held several patents and was a member of Hurt Road Baptist Church.

The funeral was March 3 at 2 p.m. at Carmichael Funeral Home Chapel in Smyrna with the Rev. Frank McLeon officiating. Burial was in the Georgia Memorial Park Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Betty F. Peebles; two sons, Charles F. Peebles, Flowery Branch, and Tony Peebles, Duluth; one daughter, Cindy Peebles (Steve) Cocker, Smyrna; his brothers, Albert (Marion) Peebles, Milwaukee, Wisc., Jack Peebles, Gibson; one sister-in-law, Helen Peebles, Stapleton; and four grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Wellstar Community Hospice, 4040 Hospital West Drive, Austell, GA 30106.

Glynn L. Cawley
Mr. Glynn L. Cawley, 75, of Mitchell died Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004, at Macon Northside Hospital.

Mr. Cawley, a native of Glascock County, was an Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict where he served in the Medi-Vac Unit (MASH). He was a pharmacist for 40 years of which 33 was served at the University Hospital in Augusta. He was a Methodist.

The funeral was March 2 at 2 p.m. at Sheppard Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bill Seaman officiating. Burial was in the Mitchell City Cemetery with Military Honors.

Survivors include his wife, Annie Ruth Cawley; two sons, George Edward Cawley and Gary L. (Brenda) Cawley, Mitchell; one daughter, Gwen Ellen Davis, Mitchell; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Kyle P. Davis, Jimmy Akers, David Akers, Edward Parnel, Jimmy Gibson and James Albea.

Sheppard Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

John Willard Davis
Mr. John Willard Davis, 63, of Louisville died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2004, at the Medical College of Georgia.

Mr. Davis, a native of Jefferson County, was retired as the owner and operator of Davis Grocery Store. He was the son of the late Elgie L. Davis and Mary Wilkins Davis.

The funeral was Feb. 26 at 2 p.m. in the Louisville United Methodist Church with the Revs. Pat Mahan and Ed Dean officiating. Burial was in the Louisville City Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Ethel Hattaway Davis; three sons, John (Tracy) Davis Jr., Bartow, Mark (Wendy) Davis and Richard Allen Davis, Louisville; three brothers, Cecil Davis, Herbert Davis and J.E. Davis, all of Louisville; three sisters, Virginia Pruitt, Freemont, Fla., Jeanette Willie, Media, Ohio, and Teresa Forrest, Augusta; and four grandchildren, Joshua Kyle Davis, Avery Nicole Davis, Laura Grace Davis and Jaquan Andre Davis.

Southern Heritage Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Rose Rhoney
Mrs. Rose Rhoney, 89, of Wrens died Friday, Feb. 27, 2004.

The funeral was March 3 at 2 p.m. at Spread Chapel AME Church with the Rev. Charlie Myrick officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include four sons, John Rhoney Jr., Robert Rhoney, Willie Rhoney and Harold Rhoney; two sisters, Annie Smith and Julie Whitaker.

Freeman Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Kate Clements Rogers
Mrs. Kate Clements Rogers, 85, of Wrens died Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004, at McDuffie Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Rogers was a member of Wrens Baptist Church and a member of the Agnes Martin Sunday School class. She had retired from the Civil Service where she had served for 22 years. She is preceded in death by her husband, John Lewis Rogers, and a great-granddaughter, Chelsea Cowart.

The funeral was March 2 at Wrens Baptist Church at 2 p.m. with the Revs. Bill Deakins and Race Lariscy officiating. Burial was in the Wrens Memorial Cemetery.

Survivors include one son, Byrd (Fran) Rogers, Thomson; two daughters, Katie Lou (Lewis) Hoats, Thomson, and Carolyn Cowart, Wrens; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Raley Clements, Robert Clements, Paul Clements, Ralph Rogers, Emory Clements and Michael Rogers.

Honorary pallbearers are members of the Agnes Martin Sunday School class.

James Van Tillman
Mr. James Van Tillman, 65, died Monday, Feb. 23, 2004, at Jefferson Hospital.

Mr. Tillman, a native f Bibb County, lived most of his life in Statesboro. Upon graduating from Statesboro High School he attended Georgia Southern College. He farmed several years in the Register community and was active in civic affairs in Bulloch County. He was a retired agri-businessman, cattle rancher and former owner-operator of Bulloch Stockyard. He was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his parents, Julian V. and Mae Collins Tillman.

The funeral was Feb. 26 at 3 p.m. in the Jake A. Futch Funeral Home Chapel wit the Rev. Carl Ledbetter officiating. Burial was in Eastside Cemetery.

Survivors include two daughters, Vanee T. (Allen) Blanchette, Statesboro, and Cheri T. (Jamie) Kirby, Louisville; and six grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 10 Forest Pines Drive, Statesboro, GA 30458.

Bernard G. Todd
Mr. Bernard G. Todd, 62, of Gibson died Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004, at Doctors Hospital in Augusta.

Mr. Todd, a native of Glascock County, was a member of Mill Creek Baptist Church. He was retired from the Thomson Postal Service after 23 years of service. He was an Army Veteran and sang with the 7th Army Chorus. He was a farmer and enjoyed fishing.

A graveside service was held March 3 at 1 p.m. at Mitchell City Cemetery with Dr. Gary Hadden officiating.

Survivors include his daughter, Lori Todd Boyen, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; one brother, Aaron Todd, Albany; and one grandson, Hagan Andrew Boyen.

Memorials may be made to Mill Creek Baptist Church, c/o Jo Dean Usry, P.O. Box 111, Gibson, GA 30810.

Plezen W. Whigham Jr.
Mr. Plezen W. Whigham Jr. of Wadley died Friday, Feb. 27, 2004, at Doctor's Hospital.

Mr. Whigham was a native of Jefferson County where he attended elementary and high school. He joined Trinity C.M.E. Church at an early age.

The funeral was Feb. 28 at 11 a.m. at Williams Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. J.C. Phinizy officiating. Burial was in Live Oak C.M.E. Church Cemetery in Wadley.

Survivors include six sisters, Ola Mae Curtis, Exzeamma L. Johnson, both of Augusta, Mattie Lee Jackson, Savannah, Beatrice K. Shariff, Atlanta, Gladys W. Hobbs, Wrens, and Annette C. Wright, Conyers; two brothers, Raybun M. Whigham, Augusta, and Hubert H. Whigham, Atlanta; two sisters-in-law, Blanche Whigham and Marion Whigham; two brothers-in-law, Dr. Gardner J. Hobbs, Wrens, and Jimmy Wright, Conyers; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
