James Hammond
Mr. James Hammond of Wadley died Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004.

Wake Service was Feb. 10 from 7-8 p.m. at Hudson Mortuary Chapel. Burial was in Hardshell Cemetery on Feb. 11 at 11 a.m.

Survivors include one sister, Teresa Wiley, Toledo, Ohio; two nieces, Elaine Kinsey, Toledo, and Blondene Carswell, Bronx, NY; a special cousin, Eunice Hannah, Louisville; and great-niece, Bernadine Heggs, Bronx.

Hudson Mortuary was in charge of the arrangements.

Sarah "Betty" Telfair Gross
Mrs. Sarah "Betty" Telfair Gross, 61, of Brooklyn, NY, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004.

Mrs. Gross, a native of Jefferson County, was a 1962 graduate of Jefferson County High. She was the daughter of the late Otis and Mary Telfair. She was a former member of Peaceful Baptist Church, later joining First Baptist Church in Crown Heights.

The funeral was Feb. 5 at noon at Pierce Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Johnny R. Sampson officiating. Burial was in Hardshell Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Horace Gross Jr.; one sister, Gloria Telfair, Brooklyn; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Horace Gross Sr. and Sally Gross, Wadley; step-children, David Blount, Sylvania, Terry Heggs, Augusta, and Mark Gross, Brooklyn, Rhonda Heggs, New York, NY, and Takesha Heggs, Bronx; three brothers-in-law; five sisters-in-law; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Davis Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Robert Ware Cason
Mr. Robert Ware Cason, 74, of Warrenton, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004, at University Hospital in Augusta.

Mr. Cason, a native of Warren County, was a veteran of the US Army. He was a retired mail carrier and farmer. He was a member of Long Creek Baptist Church and a member of God's Extended Hands. He was preceded in death by his wife Helen Gunn Cason; a sister, Dorothy Story; and a brother, L.M. Cason Jr.

The funeral was Feb. 8 at 2 p.m. at Lowe Funeral Home with the Rev. Grady King officiating. Burial was in Scruggs Cemetery in Norwood.

Survivors include one son, Chuck Cason; one daughter, Cindy Aides; one brother, Billy Cason; one sister, Mattie C. May, all of Warrenton; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Nell Downs, Mitchell.

Pallbearers were John Downs, Joey Smith, Randy Johnson, Robert Johnson, Tommy May and Tom Sluter.

Memorials may be made to Long Creek Baptist Church, 2086 Long Creek Church Rd., Warrenton, GA 30828 or to one's favorite charity.

Johnnie Sheppard Kitchens
Mrs. Johnnie Sheppard Kitchens, 71, of Gibson died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004.

Mrs. Kitchens, a native of Glascock County, worked in the Sheppard Insurance Agency for 41 years before retiring. She was a member and officer of Fellowship Baptist Church.

The funeral was Feb. 5 at 2 p.m. at Fellowship Baptist Church with the Revs. Bill Seaman and Carter Hudson officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Lewis Kitchens Jr.; a son, Kim (Diane) Kitchens, Gibson; a daughter, Lisa (Gary) Usry, Gibson; a sister, Theresa (Levy) Swint; a brother, Dan (Carol) Sheppard; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Rip Williamson, Keith Williamson, Danny Sheppard, Dwayne Lyons, Gary Deal and Gregg Kelley.

Honorary pallbearers was the Gibson School class of 1950.

Martha Brooks Malaczewski
Mrs. Martha Brooks Malaczewski of Boca Raton, Fla., died Monday, Feb. 2, 2004.

Mrs. Malaczewski, a native of Jefferson County, was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

The funeral was Feb. 6 at 2 p.m. at James Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Donald Lumpkin officiating. Burial was at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Raymond Malaczewski; two sons, Raymond "Butch" Malaczewski, Perth Amboy, NJ, and Edward "Bubbie" Malaczewski, Boca Raton, Fla.; one sister, Marie Dixon, Stapleton; two brothers, George Brooks, Avera, and Edgar Brooks, Gibson; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Tommy Dixon, Bill Parrish, Terry Brooks, Wade Brooks, Chris Brooks and Greg Brooks.

Jessie Em Fisher Scott
Mrs. Jessie Em Fisher Scott, 104, of Miami, Fla., died Monday, Feb. 2, 2004.

The funeral was Feb. 7 at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Wadley with the Rev. Herman Baker officiating. Burial was in Eden Baptist Church Cemetery.

Survivors include two daughters, Pearl Scott Dove and Margaret Scott Clemons, Miami, Fla.; six sons, Columbus Scott and Emory Scott, Pompano Beach, Fla., William Scott, Southfield, Mich., Charles Scott, Wadley, Frankie Scott, El Paso, Texas, and Sherman Scott, Baltimore, Md.; 39 grandchildren, 65 great-grandchildren, 8 great great-grandchildren and one great great great-grandchild.

Hudson Mortuary was in charge of the arrangements.

Roosevelt Lodge Jr.
Mr. Roosevelt Lodge Jr. of Wadley died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004.

The funeral was Feb. 8 at 2 p.m. at Hudson Mortuary Chapel with Bishop Antonio Pringle officiating. Burial was in Old Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery, Wadley.

Survivors include his wife, Ora Mae Heggs Lodge, Wadley; eight daughters, Lillie Mae Gilmore, Anna Bell Lodge, Michelle Jones, Queenie Lodge, Teresa Lodge, Iesha Lodge, Zanquisha Lodge and Vanessa Lodge, Wadley; seven sons, Roosevelt Lodge III, Marvin Lodge, Verlon Lodge Sr., Tommie Lodge Sr. and Verlon Lodge Jr., Wadley, Ricky Lodge, Atlanta, and Jeffery Mack Jr., Wrightsville; 20 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Hudson Mortuary was in charge of the arrangements.

Jack Brown Oliphant Sr.
Mr. Jack Brown Oliphant Sr., 94, of Matthews died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004, at McDuffie Regional Medical Center in Thomson.

Mr. Oliphant, a native of Jefferson County, was a World War II Army veteran and a member of Ways Baptist Church. He had retired as a meat cutter and farmer and had also been the owner of Thomson Packing Company in Thomson.

The funeral was Feb. 6 at 11 a.m. at Ways Baptist Church with the Revs. Wayne Turpin and Allen Holbrook officiating.

Survivors include four sons, Jack B. Oliphant Jr. and David Oliphant, Thomson, Billy Oliphant, Grovetown, and Tommy Oliphant, Warrenton; two daughters, Barbara Hefner and Dianne Norris, Thomson; one brother, Harry Oliphant, Hephzibah; one sister, Dorothy Godwin, Plains; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Joshua Hefner, Phillip Story, Zack Norris, Alan Oliphant, Brian Oliphant and Mike Oliphant.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2623 Washington Rd., F-104, Augusta, GA 30904.

Minnie Lonita McDonald Williams
Mrs. Minnie Lonita McDonald Williams of Augusta died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004, at Doctors' Hospital in Augusta.

Mrs. Williams, a native of Wrens, resided in Augusta most of her life. She was preceded in death by her husband Pat Williams and baby son, Ronnie Hughes.

Graveside services were Jan. 31 at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Survivors include five daughters; Patricia Noren, Elizabeth Williams, Brenda Whitaker of Wrens, Gayle Lewis and Carol Bazemore of Wrens; three sons, John C. Williams, William Frank Hughes III and Baron Hughes; and two sisters, Dot Dye and Margie Englett, both of Wrens.

Poteet and Sons Funeral Home, Augusta, was in charge of the arrangements.

John Wesley Smith
Mr. John Wesley Smith died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004.

Mr. Smith, a native of Jefferson County, was the son of the late Arthur and Georgia Walker Smith. He attended Jefferson County Training School and served in the United States Army for four years during World War II achieving the rank of Corporal. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He was employed at the United States Senate Office Building. He retired in 1980 as Labor Foreman after 35 years of service. He also operated his own television repair service on a part-time basis. He was a member of Turner Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Church where he served as a Steward.

Survivors include four children, Emma Tarleton, West River, Md., Georgie Montgomery, Landover, Md., Wesley Leon Smith, Hague, Va., and Betty Habershon, Fort Washington, Md.; for brothers, Hattie Mae Holloway, Keysville, Eunice Hannah, Louisville, Evelyn Johnson, Altamonte Springs, Fla., Daisy Caldwell and Marion Hazley, both of St. Petersburg, Fla., Dorethan Yates, Ocala, Fla., Lewis Walter Smith and Henry Smith, both of Washington, DC, Arthur Smith Jr., Apoka, Fla., and Charles Haynes, Deltona, Fla.; five grandchildren; and a several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Mary Julia Thompson English
Mrs. Mary Julia Thompson English of Thomson died Thursday, Jan. 29, 2004.

Mrs. English was the daughter of Nora Elizabeth Hogan and Charles Evans Thompson. She attended college in Spartanburg, SC, and graduated from Georgia State College with a BS in education. She taught in West Green, Bastonville, Gibson, Wrens and was principal at Edgehill. She retired after 42 years of service. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Gibson. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Louise English.

The funeral was Jan. 31 at 2 p.m. at Gibson First Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Seaman officiating. Burial was in Gibson City Cemetery.

Survivors include three daughters, Helen Epps, Thomson, Mary F.J. Trelkeld, Warner Robins, and Nancy J. Sammons, Coshocton, Ohio; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and seven nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Charles Thompson, Bennett Williams, Joe Williams, Russell Davis, Lee Griffin and Roy Black.

Sheppard Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Howard Thomas Grimes
Mr. Howard Thomas Grimes, 70, of Bartow died Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, at Veterans Administration Hospital in Augusta.

Mr. Grimes was born in Wheeler County but had lived in Bartow for many years. He was a member of the Bartow Baptist Church and had owned a grocery store in Bartow. He was a veteran of the United States Army. He is preceded in death by his mother, father, sister and a brother.

The funeral was Feb. 1 at 2 p.m. at Bartow Baptist Church with the Revs. Jerry Eiland and Matt Chance officiating. Burial was in the Josey Baptist Church Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth C. Grimes, Bartow; two son, Bruce Grimes and Jeff (Violet) Grimes, all of Bartow; a daughter, Barbara (Billy) Perry, Bartow; a sister, Jeanette Grille, Fort Valley; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Johnny Johnson
Mr. Johnny Johnson, 54, of Gibson died Thursday, Jan. 29, 2004.

Mr. Johnson was employed with Glascock County for over 23 years. He is preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Johnson.

The funeral was Jan. 31 at 11 a.m. at James Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Richardson officiating. Burial was in the Mitchell City Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Johnson; one son, John Lee Johnson, Gibson; one daughter, Monica Rebecca Tedford, Dearing; three brothers, Billy Johnson, Tennille, Lewis Johnson and Raymond Johnson, Warrenton; one sister, Linda Searcy, Warrenton; and one grandchild, Elizabeth Marie Tedford.

Pallbearers were Sheriff Bryan Bopp, Chuck Cason, Edward Shelton, Randy Dukes, John Waller, Don Finch and Jeff Johnson.

Honorary pallbearers were Glascock County Commissioners.

Mamie Ruth Rooks
Mrs. Mamie Ruth Rooks, 91, of Louisville died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004.

Mrs. Rooks, a native of Jefferson County, was a member of Waldens United Methodist Church. She is preceded in death by her husband, Saint Elmo Rooks Sr. and grandson Marion Duane Unruh.

The funeral was Feb. 4 at 1 p.m. at Waldens United Methodist Church with the Revs. Marvin Goodman and Myra Barrett officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include one son, Saint Elmo Rooks Jr., Ellenwood; five daughter, Carolyn R. Williamson, Augusta, Emily June R. Petrosino, Anaheim, Calif., Barbara Ann Mims, Mabel Unruh Ensz and Patricia Jen Rooks, Louisville; 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Simeon Ledbetter, Darryl Unruh, Calvert Tindall, Ashley Mims, Robbie Rooks and Fay Hadden.
