Asa Judson Bentley
Mr. Asa Judson Bentley, 86, of Augusta, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005, at University Hospital in Augusta.

Mr. Bentley, a native of Lincolnton, was a member of Crawford Avenue Baptist Church where he was a deacon. He owned and operated the Bentley & Jackson Texaco station for 23 years. He also worked at Claussens Bakery for 12 years.

The funeral was Jan. 14 at 2 p.m. at Crawford Avenue Baptist Church with the Revs. Robert Daniel and Joey Thompson officiating.

Survivors include two sons, Ted and Laura Bentley and Ray and Amanda Bentley, Evans; three daughters, Margaret and Al Jackson, Faye and Bobby Berry and Marie and Mike Sutton, Martinez; one brother, T.W. Bentley Jr., Wrens; two sisters, Ruth Fox, Lincolnton, and Esther Daniels, Augusta; 15 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Randy Bentley, Danny Bentley, Sean Bentley, Austin Bentley, Chris Berry, Brian Berry, Mike Cannell, Dan Morris, Darrell Hampson, Chris Lowe and Joey Collins.

Platt's Funeral Home, Augusta, was in charge of the arrangements.

James C. Black Jr.
Mr. James C. Black Jr., 83, of Avera died Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, at Gibson Health and Rehab Center.

Mr. Black, a native of Greenville, S.C., was a retired electrician. He was a Baptist and also served in the U.S. Navy.

Graveside services were Jan. 11 at 11 a.m. at Graceland Cemetery, Greenville, with Dr. Zane Moore officiating.

Cleo Byrd
Mr. Cleo Byrd, 85, of Waynesboro died Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Augusta.

Mr. Byrd, a native of Glascock County, spent the last 18 years in the Burke County area. He was a sales representative for General Wholesale and veteran of the United States Army. He was a member of the Augusta Harley Davidson Club. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Mills Byrd.

The funeral was Jan. 13 at 3:30 p.m. at DeLoach-Kennedy Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David Brooks officiating. Burial was at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Augusta.

Survivors include his sons, Vernon Byrd, Augusta, Bill Dixon, Augusta, and Bobby Watkins, Hephzibah; his sister, Nellie Byrd, Tenn.; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and two great great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were James Anderson, B.J. Woolwine, Woodrow Ansley, Eugene Ansley, Daniel Faulkner and J.R. Ross.

DeLoach-Kennedy Funeral Home Chapel, Hephzibah, was in charge of the arrangements.

Curtis Danford Sr.
Mr. Curtis Danford Sr. of Wadley died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2005.

The funeral was Jan. 8 at 3 p.m. at San Clair Baptist Church in Wadley.

Survivors include his wife, Vallie Mae Bennett Danford; four daughters, Louise Henderson, Tallahassee, Fla., Joann Parker, Clayton, Yvonne Danford and Sherry Darisaw, Wadley; five sons, Roosevelt Bennett and Clarence Danford, Augusta, John Willie Danford, Vidalia, Curtis Danford Jr. and Kenney Danford, Wadley; one sister, Lenora Danford Tooks, Wadley; four brothers, Johnny Danford, Carlton Danford and Clarence Danford Sr., Wadley, and David Danford, Louisville; 21 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Hudson Mortuary was in charge of the arrangements.

William E. "Billy" Ellis Jr.
Mr. William E. "Billy" Ellis Jr., 56, of Gibson died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2005, at the McDuffie Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Ellis, a native of Norfolk, Va., was an inspector with Ft. Gordon. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in the Vietnam War. He was a Baptist and a member of the V.F.W. Post 6445.

Graveside services were Jan. 13 at 2 p.m. at Sallie Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Ted Miller officiating.

Survivors include a friend and companion, Dixie Norris, Gibson; three sons, William Robert Ellis and Michael Paul Ellis, Grovetown, and Kenneth Edward Ellis, Gibson; four brothers, Douglas Ellis, Warrenton, Larry Ellis, Gibson, Ralph Ellis and Buddy Ellis, Thomson; six sisters, Patricia Kitchens, Thomson, Faye Gunn and Deloria Toulson, Warrenton, Felicia Johnson, Alma, Terri Bales and Monica Ellis, Gibson; and two grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Donald Kitchens, Ronnie Ellis, Tommy Toulson, Bill Toulson, David Gunn, Mike Jones, Matthew Ellis and Jamie Ellis.

Lowe Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Susie Mae Heggs
Ms. Susie Mae Heggs of Bartow died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005.

The funeral was Jan. 17 at 1 p.m. at Old Bethel Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. K.C. Davis officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include four daughter, Sylester Heggs and Vanessa Gilmore, Wadley, and Marlean Brinson and Beverly A. Heggs, Bartow; one son, Johnny A. Heggs, Bartow, and one brother, Alonzo Heggs, Jacksonville, Fla.; 16 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Hudson Mortuary was in charge of the arrangements.

Maggie Combs Hilton
Mrs. Maggie Combs Hilton, 82, of Louisville died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005.

Mrs. Hilton, a native of Jefferson County, was a member of the Greater St. Matthews A.M.E. Church where she served as class leader, the Stewardess Board and the Missionary Society. She was also a member of the Benevolent Society and for many years as a member of the Community Rosemary Sewing Club. She was the daughter of the late Casper Sr. and Carrie Young Combs.

The funeral was Jan. 13 at 2 p.m. at the Greater St. Matthews AME Church with the Rev. David Walker officiating. Burial was in the Chorus Delion/Benevolent Society.

Survivors include her son, Johnie Hilton, Columbia, S.C.; her siblings, Casper Combs Jr., Hattie C. Boatwright and Willie Curtis, all of Louisville; four grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

Davis Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Charlie Johnson
Mr. Charlie Johnson of Gordon died Monday, Jan. 10, 2005.

The funeral was Jan. 14 at 1 p.m. at Dwight's Funeral home Chapel in Millen.

Survivors include five children, Mr. Willie Charles (Liz) Johnson, Millen, Mr. Charlie Edward Johnson, Atlanta, Mr. Samuel (Lucy) Johnson Sr., Hephzibah, Mrs. Mary Jane Johnson (James) Young, Millen, and Mrs. Janice Johnson (Bill) Ruth, Hephzibah; one sister, Ms. Loretta Johnson, Wadley; and several other relatives.

Dwight's Funeral Home Inc., Millen, was in charge of the arrangements.

Sim (S.T.) Reed
Mr. Sim (S.T.) Reed, 85, of Wrens died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2005.

Mr. Reed, a native of Lincoln County, made his home in Wrens for the past five years. He was retired from Rocky River Mill and was a World War II veteran who served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of White Hall Church of God.

Graveside services were held Jan. 15 at 2 p.m. at Martain's Cross Roads in Loncolnton with the Revs. Frank Cantrell and E.F. Thasher officiating.

Survivors include his wife, Ann B. Reed; a son, Thomas Wayne Reed, Farmington, Mich.; a daughter, Lannetta Simmons, Wrens; three brothers, Grady Reed, Herbert Reed and John Reed; three sisters, Katherine Tuten, Carolyn Fletcher and Shirley Honcock; nine grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Strom Funeral Home, McCormick, S.C., was in charge of the arrangements.

Hazel L. Morgan Walden
Mrs. Hazel L. Morgan Walden, 77, formerly of Louisville died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005, at Jefferson Hospital.

Mrs. Walden, a native of Jefferson County, was a member of the Hardeman Springfield Baptist Church and the widow of the late Robert Walden.

The funeral was Jan. 17 at 2 p.m. at Jones Grove Baptist Church with the Revs. Fredrick Ricks, Jerry Dudley, Abraham Gibbons and Randy Hagans officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include her children, Mary Brinson and Emma Norris, Tennille, Solomon Morgan, Waynesboro, Sammie Morgan, Lithonia, Bessie Philbert and Annette Outley, Louisville, and Robert "Bob" Walden, Augusta; 20 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, one great-grandchild; three sons-in-law, two daughters-in-law, three sisters-in-law, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Pallbearers were deacons of Hardeman Springfield Baptist Church.

Bruce H. Stapleton
Mr. Bruce H. Stapleton, 74, of Sarasota, Fla., died Monday, Jan. 10, 2005.

Mr. Stapleton, a native of Stapleton, was a Baptist and served in the Army during the Korean Conflict. He is preceded in death by his father and mother, Frank and Charlotte Stapleton.

Graveside services were Jan. 15 at 2 p.m. at Stapleton Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Doug Simmons officiating.

Survivors include several cousins.

Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Hospice, 2260 Wrightsboro Road, Augusta, GA 30910.

John Charles Allen Sr.
Mr. John Charles Allen Sr., 83, of Evans died Monday, Jan. 3, 2005, at St. Joseph Hospital in Augusta.

Mr. Allen, a native of Jefferson County, had lived in Evans for over 60 years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Evans for over 60 years where he was a former Sunday School teacher and Deacon. He was a graduate of the University of Georgia with both a bachelor of science degree in animal husbandry in 1942 and masters degree in education in 1966. He served with the Army in the India/Burma Theater of the Medical Corp. during WWII. He was a member of the American Legion Post 192, VFW and the Columbia County Farm Bureau. He managed the Georgia Hereford Farm. He served on the Columbia County Board of Education and was employed by the Columbia County School System for over 30 years and retired after serving as assistant superintendent and interim superintendent to fill an unexpired term. He is preceded in death by one brother, William C. Allen, and one sister, Katherine Allen Marshall.

The funeral was Jan. 6 at 11 a.m. at Warren Baptist Church with Dr. David Fleming, the Rev. Steve Spencer and the Rev. Steve Dodson officiating.

Survivors include his wife, Louise H. Allen; two sons, Charles Allen Jr., Evans, and R.W. (Rick) Allen, Augusta; a daughter, Kathy A. Strickland, Carrollton; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were John Allen III, Zack Strickland, Dr. Joe Marshall, Dan Marshall, John William Marshall, Rusty Marshall and Dr. J.O. (Buddy) Marshall.

Honorary pallbearers were Thomas Rodgers, Senator G.B. (Jake) Pollard, Avys Billue, William Cleveland, Fred Bruggemann, Dr. Art Rahn, Dr. Neil Williams, Arlington (Bubba) Milford, Dennis Fehrman, Edward Heath, Clarence Martin, Tucker Vaughn, Don Thornhill, Joe Byrd, David Byrd, Harry Bartles, Jack Bartles, Phil Bartles, Doug Hendrix, Dr. Jay Goldsmith, Rep. Bill Jackson, Richard Ramsey, Dr. Barry Goldsmith, Miller Finley, Chris Alford, Pierce Blanchard, Pat Blanchard, Phil Blanchard, Preston Blanchard, Judge Jim Blanchard, Joe Blanchard and John Goodwin.

Ernest Willie Amerson
Mr. Ernest Willie Amerson, 60, of Wrens died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at Gibson Health and Rehab.

Mr. Amerson, a native of Burke County, was the son of the late John Willie Amerson and Rosa Lee Windon Amerson. He lived most of his life in Keysville. He was of the Baptist faith and was a former employee of Georgia-Tennessee Mining Company.

Graveside services were Jan. 11 at 3 p.m. in the Keysville United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Bill Arrington officiating.

Survivors include a daughter, Michelle Hall, Wrens; stepchildren, Janice Wilcher, Carolyn Prickett and David Hall, all of Wrens; sisters, Bessie Atkinson, Waynesboro, and Lucille Stewart, Perkins; a brother, John Willie Amerson, Thomson; half-brothers, Clarence Atkinson and Johnny Atkinson; half-sisters, Katherine Petrey and Jenny Simpson; and several grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Sam Prickett, Larry Prickett, Steven Wilcher, Ricky Prickett, Curtis Unruh and Donnie Prickett.
