Ollie Mae Mountain
Mrs. Ollie Mae Mountain died Sunday, July 2, 2006, at a convalescent home in Stockton, Calif.

Mrs. Mountain was born and raised in Wrens and moved to Miami, Fla. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Mountain; and a son, Richard Crews.

The funeral was July 8 at 1 p.m. at Lifeseed Christian Fellowship, Stockton, with Pastor Henry Ingram officiating. Graveside services were July 10 at 10 a.m. in Remembrance East Garden at Cherokee Memorial Park, Lodi.

Survivors include her children, James Brown, Midlothian, Va., Clarence Collier, Miami, Fla., Theresa Ingram, Stockton, and Oliver Crews, Miramar, Fla.; brothers and sisters, Wesley Brown, Miami, Ed Willie Brown, Mitchelle, Md., Betty Barnes, Washington, D.C.; 13 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Cherokee Memorial Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

James Wallace “Sam” Owensby
Mr. James Wallace “Sam” Owensby, 79, of Louisville died Wednesday, July 26, 2006, at Jefferson Hospital.

Mr. Owensby was a member of First Baptist Church of Louisville where he served as a deacon.

Graveside services were July 29 at 10 a.m. at Louisville City Cemetery with Pastor Larry Montgomery officiating.

Survivors include his wife, Billie B. Owensby; two sons, Joel Owensby, Hope Mills, N.C., and Jacob Owesnby, Webster Groves, Mo.; one daughter, Marsha Hinson, Wilmington, N.C.; two stepdaughters, Anne Hastings, Chapel Hill, N.C., and Gail Willem, Belvedere, S.C.; one brother, Basil Owensby, Palm Bay, Fla.; nine grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Louisville.

Southern Heritage Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Ethel Cranford Shelton
Mrs. Ethel Cranford Shelton, 76, of Thomson died Friday, July 28, 2006, at Medical College of Georgia.

Mrs. Shelton, a native of Warren County, was the daughter of the late J.C. and Ola Mae Johnson Cranford. She was a homemaker and a member of the Prospect United Methodist Church and the Adult Sunday School Class. She was a member and Past Matron of the Frances Bell Chapter #75 O.E.S. and a former secretary of the North Atlantic Girl Scouts of Europe and a Girl Scout leader. She is preceded in death by her husband Joseph O. Shelton.

The funeral was July 31 at 4 p.m. at Prospect United Methodist Church with Elder George Nichols, the Rev. Stan Holsonback and the Rev. Susan Barnes officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include four daughters, Elaine S. (Bill) Dent, Hawkinsville, Linda S. (George) Nichols, Thomson, Susan S. (Jaffrey) Montgomery, Warrenton, and Brenda S. (Dale) Reed, Mitchell; two sisters, Gloria Williams and Pansy Pearson, both of Thomson; two brothers, Ronnie Cranford, Thomson, and Jimmy Crawford, Athens; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Pallbearers were Guy Shivers, Alan Johnson, James Cranford, Chris Gunby, Bobby Montgomery, Joey Dent and Gary Dent.

Memorials may be made to the Prospect United Methodist Church, c/o Mrs. Robin Johnson, 6684 Cadley Road, Norwood, GA 30821.

Javonne Thigpen
Mrs. Javonne Thigpen, 58, of Avera died Friday, July 28, 2006.

Mrs. Thigpen was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and a member of the Friendship Sunday School Class. She was a life long resident of Jefferson County and was retired from Thermo King.

The funeral was July 31 at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Donald Lumpkin officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Ray Lucius Thigpen; a son, Mark (Lisa) Thigpen, Avera; stepson, Timothy (Cathy) Thigpen, Portland, Or.; three brothers, Norman (Gladys) Pittman, Augusta, Dwain (Donna) Pittman, Edgehill, and Bernard (Johanna) Pittman, Avera; a sister, Vannie (Jimmy) Black, Avera; and two grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Wade Brooks, L.W. Smith, Rudy Dixon, Mac Alligood, Anthony Clark, Seth Williams, Louie Chalker and Boyd Williams.

Memorials may be made to Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Building Fund, 1350 Church Street, Avera, GA 30803.

Will Albert Atkins Sr.
Mr. Will Albert Atkins Sr., 55, of Midville died Friday, Oct. 27, 2006, at St. Joseph Hospital in Augusta.

Mr. Atkins, a native of Burke County, was a member of Gordon Grove Baptist Church where he served as chairman of the trustee board until his health failed. He was a member of the Emanuel County Fire Department. He was also a 1969 graduate of Jefferson County High School.

The funeral was Nov. 4 at 2 p.m. at Gordon Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Allen Webb officiating and the Rev. Walter Holmes assisting. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include his daughter, Angela Bunyon, Midville; a son, Willie Atkins Jr., Jacksonville, Fla.; brothers, Arthur Brown, Augusta, Joe Atkins, Bronx, NY, and Roosevelt Atkins, Wadley; sisters, Lillie Bell Atkins, Bronx, NY, Mary Atkins, New York City, and Daisy Tarver, Chesapeake, Va.; three grandchildren; and several other relatives.

Pallbearers were deacons and trustees of Gordon Grove Baptist Church.

Garrer Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

James H. “Jimmy” Bailey
Mr. James H. “Jimmy” Bailey of Waynesboro died Friday, Nov. 3, 2006, at University Hospital.

Mr. Bailey, a native of Burke County, was retired as the Burke County Chief Tax appraiser. He was a graduate of Waynesboro High School and attended the University of Georgia. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Waynesboro. He was the son of the late William Davis and Marie Glisson Bailey.

A memorial service was held Nov. 5 at 4 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of Waynesboro with the Rev. Marshall Singletary officiating.

Survivors include his wife, Annette Smith Bailey; two sons, David Bailey, Waynesboro, and Donnie and Donna Bailey, Wrens; two sisters, Georgia Logan, Athens, and Dot Perkins, Richmond Hill; two grandchildren, Amber and Crystal Bailey, Waynesboro.

Memorials may be made to the Methodist Home for Children and Youth, P.O. Box 2525, Macon, GA 31203, or First United Methodist Church, 802 Liberty St., Waynesboro, GA 30830.

Emily Neal Buckner
Mrs. Emily Neal Buckner, 68, of Belvedere, SC, died Friday, Nov. 3, 2006, at University Hospital in Augusta.

Mrs. Buckner, a native of Glascock County, was retired from the Richmond County Health Department. She was a member of Gibson United Methodist Church.

The funeral was Nov. 6 at 3 p.m. at Gibson U.M.C. with the Rev. Griffin Thompson officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include her son, Richard A. Kitchens, Martinez; four sisters, Hilda McCoy, Sybil Braswell, Frankie Porter, and Dianne Rabun, all of Gibson; one brother, Kyle (Mickey) Neal, Gibson; one granddaughter and one great-granddaughter.

Pallbearers were Mike Braswell, Jack Crunkleton, Coty Faglier, Ross Rabun, Bruce Logue and Ricky Todd.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

Wanda Ladawn Darisaw
Miss Wanda Ladawn Darisaw of Louisville died Sunday, Nov. 5, 2006, at Medical College of Georgia Hospital in Augusta.

Miss Darisaw, a native of Jefferson County, was a member of Pine Hill Baptist Church where she was a member of the choir and advisor of the Pine Hill Youth Ministry. She was a 1991 graduate of Louisville High School. She also attended Sandersville Technical Institute and received her CNA certificate.

The funeral was Nov. 8 at 2 p.m. at Pine Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Peter Sparks officiating and the Rev. Terry Jones officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include her daughter, Jamie Darisaw, Louisville; parents, Carlos and Helen Darisaw, Louisville; birth mother, Verline Reed, Ft. Valley; sister, Diane Hall, Wadley; brothers, Carlos Darisaw Jr., Kenneth Darisaw Sr., Bobby Darisaw Sr. and Wayne Darisaw, all of Louisville; godson, Jamie Davis, Waynesboro; godmother, Minnie L. Darisaw, Louisville; and several other relatives.

Pallbearers were the Louisville High Class of 1991.

Honorary pallbearers were deacons and trustees of Pine Hill Baptist Church.

Hugh Pollette
Mr. Hugh Pollette, 86, of Swainsboro died Monday, Oct. 30, 2006, at Emanuel Medical Center.

Mr. Pollette, a native of Johnson County, had lived in Jefferson County before moving to Swainsboro in 1979.

He had retired with the rank of Master Sergeant from the United States Marine Corps.

He served his country in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. He was a member of Dellwood Baptist Church.

He is preceded in death by his son Paul Pollette and stepdaughter, Sylvia Braswell.

The funeral was Nov. 1 at 3 p.m. from the chapel of Tomlinson Funeral Home with the Rev. William H. Thompson officiating.

Burial with full military honors will be at Poplar Springs United Methodist Church cemetery near Adrian.

Survivors include his wife, Nell W. Braswell Pollette; one daughter, Amber Pollette, Swainsboro; a stepson, Allen Braswell, Swainsboro; a grandson, Teddy Braswell, Swainsboro; sister-in-law, Sara Bedgood; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Russell Collins, Bobby Faircloth, Billy Purvis, Jimmy Hiers, Matt Lane and Stan Powell.

Tomlinson Funeral Home, Swainsboro, was in charge of the arrangements.

NY; brother, A.D. Smith, Capital Heights, Md.; sister, Emma A. Hall, Washington, DC; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.Pallbearers were grandsons, Darrell Chaneyfield, Bryan Smith, Shawn Chaneyfield, Pernell Chaneyfield, Phillip Franklin and Kenneth Shaw. Ms. Elizabeth Thomas of Wadley died Monday, Oct. 30, 2006.

The funeral was Nov. 5 at 2 p.m. at San Clair Baptist Church with the Rev. Derwin Jackson officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include her mother, Ala Mae Gibbons, Wadley; three grandchildren, Shantera Thomas, Untorrey Thomas Jr. and Cameron Thomas, Midville; a daughter-in-law, Katina Thomas, Midville; three brothers, Levon Ted Williams, Wadley, Clinton Jerry Jackson, Louisville, and Eddie Dean Williams, Tampa, Fla.; two sisters, Cassandra Ann Prophet, Wrightsville, and Frankie Mae Thomas Oglesby, Miami, Fla.; and her grandfather, Matthew Tally Sr., Brooklyn, NY.

Pallbearers were Jeffery Mack, John Lewis, John May, Willie B. Lewis, Sammie Lee Gibbons, Lamar Smith, Clark Williams, Rev. John Harmon, John Howard, Leroy Kittles and Morris Williams.
