Marion Edward "Eddie" James
Mr. Marion Edward "Eddie" James of Matthews died Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2006.

The funeral was Jan. 14 at Elliott Sons Funeral Home, Lumpkin Road Chapel, at 2 p.m. with Larry Hubbard officiating. Burial was at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Survivors include his wife, June Nelson James; two daughters, Alisa Mossbarger and Kristen James; his parents, James Powell and Sadie Powell, Matthews; brothers, Pat James, Savannah, and James Powell, Matthews; a sister, Sherry Powell, Matthews; three nephews and one niece.

Memorials may be made to the Georgia Wildlife Conservation Fund, c/o Nongame-Endangered Wildlife Program, 116 Rum Creek Drive, Forsythe, GA 31029.

Elliott Sons Funeral Home, Augusta, was in charge of the arrangements.

Juanita Durham Petermann
Mrs. Juanita Durham Petermann, 82, of Wrens died Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2006.

Mrs. Petermann, formerly of Warner Robbins, was a retired missionary with the Child Evangelism Fellowship and a member of Bible Baptist Temple of Warner Robbins. She is predeceased by her husband Louis C. Petermann.

The funeral was Jan. 14 at 11 a.m. at James Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Melvin Wise and Charles Webber officiating. Burial was in Wrens Memorial Cemetery.

Survivors include Steve and Jarenda Durham, Wrens, Ford and Gloria Durham, Unadilla, Elizabeth and Shep Wright, Cordele, and Christine Durham, Wrens.

Memorials may be made to Child Evangelism Fellowship, P.O. Box 348, Warrenton, MO 63383.

William D. McNeely II
Mr. William D. McNeely II, 54, died Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2006.

Mr. McNeely, a native of Jefferson County, was the son of the late Calvin McNeely and Margaret Green-McNeely-Peacock. He served his country in the USMC and was discharged with honors. He spent several years as a commercial fisherman captain and later in retail management. He retired three years ago in Savannah to be near family.

The funeral was Jan. 15 at 11 a.m. at Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Gary Quinney officiating. Burial was in the Stevens Cemetery on Coleman Lake Road.

Survivors include two sons, William D. McNeely III and Shawn M. McNeely, Savannah; two daughters, Amanda McNeely, Savannah, and Carrie McNeely-Lee, Brantley County; one brother, Calvin and Sandra (Smith) McNeely, Screven County; three sisters, Martha Peacock and Michael Lindsey, Millen, Brenda Peacock and Barry Cohen, Savannah, and Kathy Peacock and William Toler, Alliance, N.C.; one grandson; five nieces; five nephews; 15 great-nieces; 4 great-nephews; and several aunts and uncles.

Smith Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Ralph Glenn Melton
Mr. Ralph Glenn Melton, 64, of Augusta died Thursday, Jan. 12, 2006.

Mr. Melton, a native of Wrens, was a 10-year U.S. Navy veteran and served during the Vietnam War. He was a retired truck driver, owner operator of 39 years. He drove buses for South Eastern Stages and Tour Buses for Talmadge Lewis. He was the son of the late Otis Warren Melton Sr. and Virginia Hazel Melton.

The funeral was Jan. 17 at 2 p.m. at Calvary Temple with the Revs. Andy Collins and Clarence Overton officiating. Burial was at Bellevue Memorial Gardens.

Survivors include his wife, Berneice Kay Melton; three daughters, Joy (Frank) Polatty, Johnston, S.C., Joanna (Patrick) Bargeron, Appling, and Lynn Overton, Hephzibah; a sister, Connie (Jimmy) Burnette, Martinez; a brother, Warren (Wanda) Melton, Mars Hill, N.C.; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Pallbearers were Bud Overton, Roy Overton, Don Overton, Phillip Boswell, Patrick Bargeron Jr. and Ricky Bartlett Jr.

Poteet Funeral Homes, Augusta, was in charge of the arrangements.

Bryce Matthew Smith
On Jan. 13, 2006, one of Jesus' very special little lambs, Bryce Matthew Smith, age 3, went to heaven to become the sweetest little angel of all. After fighting a lifetime of heart disease, the last three months he has suffered this battle with his last breath and Friday morning he won the race. Jesus said, 'Bryce, come and take my hand, let us walk on the clouds, dance and sing. Forget all your pains ('boo boos'). Smile, laugh and rejoice. Come and walk with me - my heaven is waiting for you to see.' Bryce always did light up a room wherever he went, and now Heaven is brighter because Bryce is there, shining with the wonderful joy that he has inside him.

The funeral was Jan. 15 at 3 p.m. at Wrens Baptist Church with Dr. Don Widener and the Rev. James "Jim" Dunn officiating. Burial was in Wrens Memorial Gardens.

Survivors include his parents, Randy and Marcia Smith; a brother, Jamie "Bubba" Smith, Wrens; grandparents, Garvin and Edith Usry, Wrens, Myron Smith, Wrens uncles and aunts, James and Audrey Usry, Mundelein, Ill., Phil and Arlene Usry, Wrens, Brian and Angel Usry, Wrens, Marty and Evonne Smith, Hull, Darlene and Tony Holcomb, Clearwater, Fla., James and Belinda Smith, Dearing; cousins, special friends and MCG Children's Medical Center Family.

Bryce was preceded in death by his grandmother, Shelby Jean Smith.

Pallbearers were Dr. Anthony Pearson-Shaver, Dr. James St. Louis, Dr. William Lutin and Dr. Reginald Pilcher.

Honorary pallbearers were the medical staff of MCG Children's Medical Center and the freshman class of Edmund Burke Academy.

Frances Clark
Miss Frances Clark of Wrens died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2006.Miss Clark was a life long resident of Jefferson County. She was retired from Ft. Gordon as a personnel manager of the Post Exchange, a member of the Wrens Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, a charter member of The Ladies Ten Pin Bowling League, and inducted in the Bowlers Hall of Fame.

The funeral was Oct. 22 at 3 p.m. at Wrens Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Gary Jones officiating. Burial was in Wrens City Cemetery.

Survivors include one brother, Thomas Clark, Salina, Utah; two sisters, Katie Rabun, Augusta, and Martha Clark, Wrens; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Clark Rabun, John Rooks, Bobby Brown, Leslie Hentges, Larry Wooten and Robert D. Brown. Honorary pallbearers were men of the church.

Juliet Y. Gillespie
Mrs. Juliet Y. Gillespie, 84, died Monday, Oct. 9, 2006.Mrs. Gillespie, a native of Louisville, was the daughter of the late Wilfred B. and Julia Yearns. She was a 1943 graduate of the University of Georgia with a degree in psychology and was the president of Chi Omega sorority and Mortar Board. She was an employee of Union Camp Paper Corporation and a member of Skidaway Island Presbyterian Church.

Along with the late Mrs. Betty Shepherd, she was a co-founder of the Committee of 100 which is an affiliate of the Children’s Miracle Network, helping sick children’s dreams to come true. She was a member of PEO, chapter S, a sorority of University Women.

A memorial service will be held Nov. 17 at 11 a.m. at Skidaway Island Presbyterian Church with Dr. John Wall officiating.

Survivors include her husband, Mr. Daniel Gillespie, Savannah; one daughter, Ms. Julia Warren Gillespie, N.Y. City, N.Y.; two sons, Mr. D. Curtis Gillespie (Marcia), Wilton, Conn., and Mr. David R. Gillespie (Sharon), Poolesville, Md.; one brother, Dr. Wilfred B. Yearns, Greensboro, N.C.; and five grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Skidaway Island Presbyterian Pipe Organ Fund.

Lewis Everett Newsome
Mr. Lewis Everett Newsome, 66, of Thomson died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2006.The funeral was Oct. 22 at 3 p.m. at Sweetwater Baptist Church with the Rev. Kenneth Garvin and Dr. C. Richard Dendler officiating.

Burial was in the church cemetery. Mr. Newsome, a native of Glascock County, lived most of his life in Thomson. He was a 1961 graduate of Thomson High School. He worked for Thomson Company for 40 years and retired after several years of service as a salesman from Salant Corporation. He was a member of Sweetwater Baptist Church where he was a deacon and member of the C.D. Cason Sunday School Class. He is preceded in death by his father, J.B. Newsome.

Survivors include his wife, Julia Ann Ward Newsome; two daughters, Kathy and Mark Hughes, Thomson, and Melissa and Jason O’Kane, Savannah; his mother, Edna Land Newsome, Thomson; and three grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Melvin Ansley, Dave Hunter, Lewis Hoats, Sam Prince, Branson Marsh, Aubrey Montgomery, Jimmy Steptoe and Sammy Luckey.

Luther Garrett
Mr. Luther Garrett, 89, of Bartow died Saturday, April 15, 2006, at Jefferson Hospital.

Mr. Garrett, a native of Washington, was the son of the late Luther and Dovie Garrett. He was a retired farmer and member and deacon of Davisboro Baptist Church.

The funeral was April 17 at 2 p.m. at the Davisboro Baptist Church with the Revs. Glover and Steve Kenner officiating. Burial was in the Davisboro City Cemeteyr.

Survivors include his wife, Martha Garrett; two sons, L.A. Garrett Jr., Lawrenceburg, Tenn., and Terry and Marynel Garrett, Bartow; grandchildren, Mason Garrett, Lawrenceburg, Tenn., and Tiffany Garrett, Bartow; one brother, Louis Garrett, Edgewater, Md.; six sisters, Doris Poole, Louisville, Carolyn Andrews, Tennille, Evelyn Merritt and Pauline Stewart, Bartow, Jewell Gibins, Fayetteville, and Elizabeth Usury, Tampa, Fla.; stepchildren, Ray Taylor and Jane Randall, Davisboro; Rosemary Smith, Sandersville, and Betty Sopp, Milledgeville; and several step-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Angli Brooks, Willis Hartley, Dock Garrett, Jimmie Andrews, Bill Black and Kevin Cobb.

Honorary pallbearers were Lions Club Members of Louisville, Directors of Jefferson Energy and Deacons of Davisboro Baptist Church.

Memorials may be made to the Davisboro Baptist Church Building Fund.

Howard "Skinny" Green
Mr. Howard "Skinny" Green, 57, of Bartow died Sunday, April 9, 2006, at Washington County Hospital.

Mr. Green was a native of Johnson County but lived in Jefferson County all of his life. He was a 1968 graduate of Jefferson County and a member of Tarver Grove Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a truck driver with C.T. Harris for 21 years and Howard Shepard for 6 years.

The funeral will be April 15 at 2 p.m. at Tarver Grove Baptist Church and Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Daisy Gamble Green; his children, Lorenzo (Tabitha) Green, Sandersville, Amonica Green and Antonio Green, Bartow; his father, Ben Gibbons, Swainsboro; six grandchildren; two aunts; two godchildren; several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

Davis Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Clivis Hudson
Ms. Clivis Hudson of Thomson died Thursday, April 13, 2006, at McDuffie County Hospital.

Ms. Hudson, a native of Jefferson County, was a member of the Ways Grove Baptist Church, a 1964 graduate of Jefferson County High and worked as a seamstress for many years at Stapleton Garment Company.

The funeral was April 19 at 2 p.m. at Ways Grove Baptist Church with Pastor Christine Wallace officiating. Burial was in the Ways Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Survivors include her father, Isaiah Hudson, Augusta; her children, Benita Hudson, Melita Hudson and Victor Hudson, all of Thomson; one sister, Mary Rose Hudson, Louisville; five step-siblings, Rufus Gaines, Lucienda Walker, Annie Ruth Leverett, Wrens, Willie Neal, Thomson, and Ernest Gaines, Stapleton; six grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

Davis Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Calvin James
Mr. Calvin James, 78, of Matthews died Tuesday, April 11, 2006, at Veterans Administration Medical Center.

Mr. James, a retired carpenter, served in the U.S. Navy.

The funeral was April 13 at 1 p.m. at James Funeral Home with Edward C. James officiating. Burial was in Mt. Horeb cemetery. He is preceded in death by his wife Margarete James; parents, Railey and Marie James; a sister, Margaret McNair; and a brother, Roy James.

Survivors include his children, Jeannie Grime, Mike (Michelle) James, Joyce (Tony) Lindemuth, Ronnie James, Patty (Greg) Combs, Alan James, Frank McCarthy, Vince (Kathy) James, Tony (Shirley) James; a brother, Ray (Donna) James; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Dewayne Faglier, Gary Combs, Tracy Palmer, Chris Palmer, Jason Irby and Marty Amerson.
