Ruby Pearl "Tootsie" Nelson
Mrs. Ruby Pearl "Tootsie" Nelson, 50, of Augusta died Thursday, April 13, 2006.

The funeral was April 19 at noon at Spread Chapel AME Church with the Rev. Charlie Myrick officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include her mother, Annie G. Smith, Wrens; her husband, Nathaniel Upton Jr.; three sons, Thomas (Patricia) Williams, Christopher (Serena) Nelson and Derrick Nelson; one daughter, Rachel (Rickey) Nelson; six sisters, Annie L. Vaughner and Ollie Neal, Wrens, Betty Whitaker and Inez Smith, Augusta, Carolyn Allen, Atlanta, and Carrie Price, High Pointe, N.C.; three brothers, Sammie Williams, Thomson, Bernard Williams, Augusta, and Charles Smith, Wrightsville; 22 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Curtis William Pennington
Mr. Curtis William Pennington, 91, of Starr S.C., died Tuesday, April 11, 2006, at Willow Creek Nursing Home in Iva, S.C.

Mr. Pennington grew up on a farm in Wrens. He was the son of the late Reesey W. and Annie Mae Evans Pennington. He was an athlete at Wrens High School and received a football scholarship to Clemson College, Clemson, S.C., in 1935 and played under Coach Jess Neeley. He graduated from Clemson in 1939 with a degree in agriculture education and became an ag teacher at Starr High School. Four years later he taught at Boys High School in Anderson for 17 years where he ran the county cannery each summer. He later became principal of Starr Elementary School for four years. He then served as superintendent of Anderson School District 3 until his retirement in 1982.He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Dean Jones Pennington.

The funeral was April 13 at 3 p.m. in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with the Rev. Jeff Roper officiating. Burial was in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Anderson.

Survivors include his children, Curtis W. Pennington Jr., Deanna Pennington and Elizabeth Pennington Newall; and three grandchildren.

McDougald Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Aubrey L. Powell
Mr. Aubrey L. Powell, 67, of Wrens died Friday, April 14, 2006.

Mr. Powell was a truck driver for Allen Hawkins and a member of the Church of God. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and had fought in the Korean War.

The funeral was April 17 at 10:30 a.m. in the chapel of James Funeral Home with the Rev. Tatum officiating. Burial was in the Ways Baptist Church Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Powell; a daughter, Melissa (Bobby) Guess Jr.; a step-daughter, Karen Brasher; two step-sons, Danny Coleman and James Newsome; four brothers, John Powell, Chester Powell, Gene Powell and Andy Powell; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

James Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Sadie Sammons
Mrs. Sadie Sammons, 92, of Ray City died Monday, April 17, 2006.

Mrs. Sammons, a native of Johnson County, was the daughter of the late Jim and Pearl Gibson Davis. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Ray City. She was a member of the Woodmen of the World and the Ray City Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. She is preceded in death by three grandchildren, Marvin Connell Jr., Mary Gaskins and Meghan Gaskins.

The funeral was April 19 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Ray City. Burial was in Beaver Dam Cemetery.

Survivors include two daughters, Angela and Marvin Connell, Ray City, and Joy and Robert Gaskins, Lakeland; two sons, Bobby and Mattie Sammons, Moultrie, and Jimmy and Kathy Sammons, Ray City; three sisters, Jeanette Tanner, Juanita Cofer and Ann Rabun, all of Louisville; a brother, Jim Davis, Orlando, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Music Funeral Services, Lakeland, was in charge of the arrangements.

James E. Stephens
Mr. James E. Stephens, 83, died Saturday, April 6, 2006, at Doctor's Hospital in Augusta.

Mr. Stephens, a native of Jefferson County, was the son of the late Gordon and Nannie Smith Stephens, former Wadley residents. The Stephens family lived in Wadley before being transferred to Augusta with Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Company. He had been a resident of Augusta for a number of years and was a member of St. Mark United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his brother, William Hugh Stephens.

Graveside services were held April 15 at 1 p.m. in Westover Memorial Park with the Rev. Michael Davenport officiating.

Survivors include a niece, Barbara Hilton, Lincolnton; and two cousins, Norma Stephens Godowns, Orangeburg, S.C., and C.W. Stephens Jr., Wrens.

Platt's Funeral Home, Augusta, was in charge of the arrangements.

Lillie Bell Cunningham
Ms. Lillie Bell Cunningham of Jamaica, N.Y., died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2006, at Calvary Hospital Medical Center.

The funeral was Sept. 2 at 10 a.m. at the Francisco Funeral Home Chapel, Ozoae Park, N.Y.

Survivors include a son, Timothy (Rita) Cunningham, N.Y.; three sisters, Minnie Cuyler, Louisville, Willie Bennett, Jacksonville, Fla., and Lillie Gray, Queens, N.Y.; two brothers, Wilbert Williams, Waynesboro, and Eddie Williams, Harrison; half-siblings, Bernice Raydn, Augusta, and Hugh Moore, N.Y.; four grandchildren and several other relatives.

Davis Funeral Home was in charge of local arrangements.

Lee Edward Gilmore
Rev. Lee Edward Gilmore, 49, of Bartow died Saturday, Sept. 2, 2006, at the Medical College of Georgia Hospital in Augusta.

Rev. Gilmore, a native of Jefferson County, was the son of Mrs. Lillie Bell Gilmore and the late Eddie Gilmore. He attended the public schools of Jefferson County. In 1983 he moved to New York where he lived for 15 years before returning in 1998 and working as a self employed laborer.

The funeral was Sept. 5 at 11 a.m. at the Harrison Grace Church of Jesus and Cemetery in Harrison with the Rev. Harold Gilmore officiating.

Survivors include his wife, Victoria Jean Rodda Gilmore; his mother, Lillie Bell Gilmore, Bartow; children, Shanna Gilmore, Lee Edward (Kanesha) Gilmore Jr., Nessa Gilmore, Eddie Gilmore, all of Long Island, N.Y., Candice (Jeremy) Weiss, Melbourne, Fla., Joseph (Talebra) Alessandro, Palm Bay, Fla., Robert Gilmore, Shealyn Gilmore, Amanda Gilmore, all of Bartow; siblings, France Tennyson, Swainsboro, Lillie May Floyd, Mattie Robinson, Charles Gilmore and Gloria Davis, all of Bartow, Josephine Roberson, Midville, and Bobby Gilmore, Wadley; his mother-in-law, Rose Marie Rodda, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren and several other relatives.

Davis Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Calvin Warthen
Mr. Calvin Warthen of Louisville died Monday, Aug. 29, 2006.

The funeral was Sept. 2 at 2 p.m. at Jones Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerry Dudley officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Survivors include a daughter, Rhonda Gilmore, Louisville; three sons, Calvin Gilmore, Kenneth Gilmore and Larry Gilmore, Louisville; five sisters, Frances Mitchell, Rosena Warthen and Annie Jenkins, Wadley, Betty Percell, Bronx, N.Y., and Ernestine Warthen, Swainsboro; four brothers, Frank Warthen, Harrisburg, Pa., Leroy Warthen, Wadley, David Warthen and Jonathan Warthen, Augusta; his fiancée, Addie Jackson, Louisville; eight grandchildren; and several other relatives.

Pallbearers were David Warthen, Eddie Gilmore, Ricardo Crawford, Clarence Gamble and Willie Gilmore. Hudson Mortuary was in charge of the arrangements.

Jerry Mayo
Retired SFC Jerry Mayo, 71, of Ceredo, W.V., died Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2006, at the Huntington VA Medical Center.

SFC Mayo, a native of Huntington, WV, was the son of the late Leslie and Rema O’Dell Mayo. He was a retired veteran of the US Army with 22 years of service. He was also retired from the ACCU Ray/ ABB Computer Corporation. He was a Vietnam veteran, having received the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/Palm. He was a member of the Buffalo Senior Center, a board member of the Southwestern Community Council and a member of Prince of Peace Freewill Baptist Church. He is preceded in death by a sister, Phyllis Ann Mayo; a brother, Jim (James) Mayo; two daughters, Julia Ann Mayo (infant) and Lorna Jean Opachick who died July 14, 2006.

The funeral was Sept. 2 at 2 p.m. at the Prince of Peace Freewill Baptist Church with Pastor Phillip Warren officiating. Burial was in Docks Creek Cemetery, Kenova, W.V. Survivors include his wife, Myrtle Mayo, Ceredo, WV; four daughters, sons-in-law and their family, Gerry Lynn and Ronnie Thompson, Huntington, and their three children, Michelle and Jamie Copley, Sherry and Jamie hall and Joshua Thompson; Tammy and Jim Votaw, Wrens, and their daughter, Veronika Price; Bonnie Hamm, Kenova, WV, and her three children, Brian Hamm, Ashley and Jarrod Maddox and Caleb Hamm; Nola and Clifford Jones, Thomson, and their three children, Wesley and Kelly Jones, Brad Jones and Cassie Jones; a son-in-law, Bill Opachick, Kenova, and Lorna’s son and daughter-inlaw Shane and Diane Phillips, Iraq, and Lorna’s and Bill’s two children, Dawn Opachick and Nicholas Opachick; five great-grandchildren; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Rusty (Leslie) and Brenda Mayo, Procterville, Oh., and J.T. (John) and Donna Mayo, Barboursville, WV; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Gail and David Brown, Huntington, and Shenna and “Rip” (Raymond) DeBoard, Barboursville, WV; a sister-in-law, Phyllis Mayo, Procterville, Oh.; and several other relatives.

Sylvester Moore
Mr. Sylvester Moore, 53, of Keysville died Saturday, Sept. 2, 2006, at University Hospital in Augusta.

Mr. Moore, a native of Burke County, was a graduate of Waynesboro High. He was owner and CEO of Moore Farm Services and a member of Ways Grove Baptist Church.

The funeral was Sept. 8 at 2 p.m. at Noah’s Ark Baptist Church with the Rev. Jimmy McCullough officiating. Burial was at Ways Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Regenia Harrison Moore; four children, Sebastian Jones, Burke County, Erica Crandell, Atlanta, Sheldon Robinson, Milledgeville, and Andrequez Moore, Gough; one step-daughter, Yalencia Harrison, Keysville; siblings, Sallye M. Hightower, Dr. Gladys M. Twyman, Barbara Oliver and Carnell Moore, all of Atlanta, Martin Moore Jr., Linzie Moore, Gough, Wilbert Moore, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Bartha Moore, Savannah, and Willie Lee Moore, Hephzibah; his mother-in-law, Gladys Jones Harrison, Lincolnton; four grandchildren; and several other relatives.

Gertrude F. Brett
Mrs. Gertrude F. Brett, 90, of Kite died Wednesday, March 22, 2006, at Emanuel Medical Center.

Mrs. Brett, formerly of Moxley Community, was born in Emanuel County. She was a homemaker and a member of Moxley Baptist Church.

The funeral was March 25 at 11 a.m. at Moxley Baptist Church with the Revs. Tom Harrison and Murray Brett officiating. Burial was in the Moxley Cemetery.

Survivors include two daughters, Gayle Farrar, Swainsboro, and Helen Schmid, Kite; four sons, Lintorn G. Brett, Henry P. Brett Sr. and William A. Brett, all of Kite, and Bobby E. Brett, Moxley; one brother, Barney Newman, Augusta; four sisters, Myrtle Busch and Wilma Wilson, both of Warrenville, S.C., Eva Roberts, Bath, S.C., and Shirley McCary, North Augusta; 16 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were grandsons.

Memorials may be made to the Moxley Cemetery Inc., Box 130, Wadley, GA 30477.

Bobbie Ann Clark
Mrs. Bobbie Ann Clark, 68, of Avera died Wednesday, March 22, 2006, at University Hospital in Augusta.

Mrs. Clark was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church where she was a church clerk and assistant Sunday School teacher. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary Fire Department and a board member of Tri-County Health. She retired from Stapleton Garment as an inspector. She is preceded in death by her husband Libbon Clark, and her parents, John Horace and Katie Lou Williams.

The funeral was March 26 at 3 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with the Revs. Donald Lumpkin and Lester Clark officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include her children, Pamela (Warren) Mathis, Gail (Lonnie) Ledger, Penny (C.C.) Cheeks and Russell Clark, Avera, and Anthony (Melinda) Clark, Gibson; grandchildren, Jason (Holly) Mathis, Ashley (Michael) Brown, Kaitlin Ledger, Jarrett Ledger and Candace Cheeks; great-grandchildren, Kaden Mathis and Sophie Bess Brow; a brother, Lindy (Margaret) Williams, Martinez; sisters-in-law, Norma (George) Prescott, Stapleton, Yvonne (Larry) McGraw and Debra (Nathaniel) Newsome, Avera; and an aunt, Ethel Hughes, Gibson.

Pallbearers were Jason Mathis, Michael Brown, Bobby Williams, Stevie Williams, Gary Kitchens, William Goodson, Tommy Sheppard and Dr. Chris Sheppard.

Honorary pallbearers were the Friendship Sunday School Class.

Mr. George Cunningham, 68, of Augusta died Tuesday, March 21, 2006.

Mr. Cunningham, a native of Jefferson County, was a member of Eden Baptist Church.

The funeral was March 25 at 1 p.m. at the Eden Baptist Church and Cemetery with the Rev. James Nelson officiating.

Survivors include his daughters, Jimmie Mae Durden, Wadley, and Vanessa "Cookie" Cunningham, Augusta; his brother, John (Zannie) Cunningham, Louisville; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several other relatives.

Horace Richard Garrett Jr.
Mr. Horace Richard Garrett Jr., 70, of Wadley died Tuesday, March 22, 2006, at University Hospital in Augusta.

Mr. Garrett, a native of Emanuel County and formerly of Macon, had lived in Jefferson County since 1978. He was a member of Wadley Baptist Church where he was a member of the Faith Sunday School class and also served as a teacher. He was an insurance agent.

The funeral was March 24 at 11 a.m. at the Wadley Baptist Church with Dr. Ernest Purcell and the Rev. Tom Harrison officiating. Burial was in Lambs Chapel Church Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Violet Garrett; three sons, Richard Paul Garrett, Cocoa, Fla., Lester Ray (Cindy) Bryant Jr., Wadley, and Randy James (Ellen) Garrett, Macon; his mother, Mary Elizabeth Lamb Garrett, Louisville; one sister, Mary Elizabeth Garrett Cobb, Louisville; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Pallbearers were Ronnie Hinson, Robert Earl King, Jim Curry, Michael Oglesby, Stanley Upton, Tim Garrett, Travis Garrett and Billy Arrington.

Honorary pallbearers were deacons of Wadley Baptist Church.
