Kenneth A. Phillips

CARNESVILLE-Kenneth Arthur Phillips, 76, of 14470 Georgia Higway 106, died Dec. 29, 2001 at his home.

A native of Franklin County, he was born May 27, 1915 to the late Arthur A. and Mary Brooks Phillips. He was the husband of Mildred Rowland Phillips and a retired supervisor in the textile industry in Pawtucket, R.I. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served under Commander General Patton and was a member of the Slater Baptist Church in Marietta, S.C.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred Rowland Phillips, Carnesville; three daughters, Barbara Nunes, Karen Allen and Nancy Beaudette, all of Pawtucket, Rhode Island; a step-daughter, Diane McCurry, Carnesville; grandchildren, Amy O’Dell and Daniel Nunes, both of Pawtucket, R.I.; step-grandchilden, Johnna McCurry and Christy McCurry, both of Carnesville, and a brother, Dwight Phillips, Royston.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Billy Phillips, Rev. Spence Phillips and Omer Phillips; and three sisters, Mattie Craft, Bonnie Hopkins and Bertha Parten.

Funeral services were held Jan. 1, 2002 at the Pruitt Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Merritt Waters officiated. Burial followed in the Allens United Methodist Church cemetery.

John Ray Bramlett

LAVONIA-John Ray Bramlett, 62, died Dec. 31, 2001 after a long illness.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra Bramlett, Lavonia; children, David Bramlett, Clayton, Donna Jackson, Lavonia, and Deidra Ayers, Carnesville; his mother, Gaynell Bramlett, Monroe; two brothers, Donald Bramlett, Monroe and Randy Bramlett, Maysville; nine grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

No services are planned. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 3000 Langford Rd., Building 600, Norcross, GA 30071.

Rachel Crawford

COMER-Rachel Frances Long Crawford, 74, of the Comer Health Care Center died Jan. 2, 2002 at the Comer Health Care Center.

A native of Madison County, she was born Sept. 3, 1927 to the late Zachery Augusteas and Minnie Viola Hilley Long. Her husband was the late Asberry Lee Crawford. She was a sewing machine operator and a member of the Shiloh Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, James Crawford, Danielsville; a sister, Etta Mae Campbell, Royston; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, George (Buddy) Wayne Crawford; two brothers, George and Harry Long; one sister, Ruth Lee Coile and a half-brother, Harrison Manley.

Services were held Jan. 4, 2002 at the Shiloh Baptist Church. The Revs. Glenn Guest and Williard Crider officiated. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Shiloh Baptist Church, Highway 174, Danielsville, GA 30633.

Clyde Gorman

EASTANOLLEE-Charles Clyde Gorman, 87, of 16945 Georgia Highway 106, died Jan. 1, 2002 at Stephens County Hospital in Toccoa.

He was born Feb. 22, 1914 to the late James Marion and Vester Cantrell Gorman. He was the husband of Grace Kelley Gorman and was retired from Trogden Furniture Manufacturing in Toccoa where he had been a refinisher. He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include his wife, Grace Kelley Gorman, of the home; five daughters, Clydean Brewer, Toccoa, Shirley Dabbs, Riverdale, Nancy Franklin and Linda Keller, both of Carnesville, and Brenda Evans, Hartwell; three sons, Jimmy Gorman, Jonesboro, Larry Gorman, Lavonia, and Jerry Gorman, Carnesville; a brother, Clarence Gorman, Hapeville; 14 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and 3 step-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Jan. 4, 2002 from the chapel of Hamby Funeral Home in Lavonia. The Rev. Ralph Goss officiated. Interment followed in the Franklin Memorial Gardens, North.

George James

ROYSTON-George Washington Cody James, 85, of Dovetown Road, died Jan. 4, 2002 at Cobb Memorial Hospital in Royston.

A native of Franklin County, he was born Feb. 29, 1916 to the late Frank and Rosa Lee Taylor James. He was the husband of Doris Mattie Weaver James and a retired press operator for Advocate Press. He was a member of the Royston Baptist Church and Woodman of the World.

Survivors include his wife, Doris Mattie Weaver James, Royston; a daughter, Sallye Bond, Danielsville; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by daughters, Peggy Ann Toney and Martha Cleveland and brothers, Waymon, Herbert, Jimmy and Frank James.

Funeral services were held Jan. 6, 2002 at the Pruitt Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Byron Greene officiated. Burial followed at the Franklin Memorial Gardens South.

Blanche R. Karras

LAVONIA-Blanche Rooks, Karras, 89, of 205 Paradise Point, died Jan. 4, 2002 at her home.

A native of Sumter county, she was born Aug. 28, 1912 to the late Wisdom Reedy and Mary Lou Crook Rooks. Her husband was the late Charles G. Karras. She was retired from the Karras family business, Decatur Exterminating Company. She was a member of the Lavonia United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a daugher, Kay Karras Guice, Breman; four sisters, Frances Guarro, Albany, Hazel McKoon, Brunswick, Monette Pilgrim, Columbus and Alma Josey, Blackshear; a brother, W.R. Rooks, Americus; two grandchildren, Erinne Karras Guice and Gigner Victoria Guice, both of Breman.

Funeral services were held Jan. 6, 2002 from the chapel of Hamby Funeral Home in Lavonia. The Rev. Ben Lewis and Dr. Joe Renfro officiated. Burial followed in the Lavonia City Cemetery.

Robert Green

IVA, S.C.-Robert Walter Green, 80, of New Street, died Jan. 5, 2002 at Anderson Area Medical Center.

A native of Royston, he was born June 5, 1921 to the late Thomas James Green and Jennie Smith Green. He was the husband of Bertha Lee Carey Green. He was a retired textile employee at Jackson Mill. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in France during World War II and was a member of Iva Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Survivors include his wife, Bertha Lee Carey Green of the home; four sons, Doug, Wayne, Jimmy “Beaver” and Michael Green, all of Iva, S.C.; three daughters, Faye Kelly and Susan McGill, both of Anderson, S.C. and Marie Hall, Iva, S.C.; ten grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, two step-grandchilden and four step-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Green and six sisters, Ethel Green, Bertha Green, Minnie Green, Molly Green, Ruby Parker and Etta Green.

Funeral services were held Jan. 9, 2002 at Iva Pentecostal Holiness Church. The Revs. Billy Pinson and Charles Howell Jr. officiated. Burial followed in the Iva City Cemetery in Iva, S.C.

C.M. Tyner

ATHENS-C.M. Tyner, 86, of 137 Berlin St. died Jan. 7, 2002 at the BJC Nursing Home in Commerce.

A native of Madison County, he was born Aug. 6, 1915 to the late Clestus and Mary Fowler Tyner. He was a factory worker and had worked at the Warner Robbins Air Force Base. He was a member of the Bluestone Baptist Church.

Survivors include a sister, Allene T. Barnett, Athens; a niece, Betty Ann Smith, Danielsville; and several cousins.

Funeral services were held Jan. 9, 2002 at the Pruitt Funeral Home

Sidney Bouquet Jr.

CANON-Sidney Joseph Bouquet Jr., 71, of 210 Smith St., Canon, died March 25, 2002 at the Cobb Memorial Hospital in Royston.

A native of Morganza, La., he was born Jan. 8, 1931 to the late Sidney Joseph Bouquet Sr. and Monica Leah LeBlanc Bouquet. His wife was the late Vivian Massey Bouquet. He

worked with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Candlewick Yarns in Royston. He was a U.S. Army veteran and member of the Canon Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Gregory Thomas Bouquet, Canon; four daughters, Pamela Hill and Becky Youngblood, both of Carnesville; Mary Dowell, Canon, and Shannon Bouquet, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two brothers, Larry Bouquet, Baton Rouge, La., and Hewitt Bouquet, Addis, La.; six sisters, Eula Neyland, Zachery, La., Eva Broussard, Denham Springs, La., Ruth Nicholosia, New Orleans, La., Ora Gucho, Morganza, La., and Olive Russell, Corpus Christi, Texas; and nine grandchilden.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Vernon Bouquet and two sisters, Mary Bouquet and Agnes Boudreaux.

Funeral services were held March 28, 2002 at Canon Baptist Church. The Revs. Paul Creason and Eldon Massey officiated. Burial followed in the Bowers Memorial Gardens.

S.M. Fortson Jr.

ROYSTON-Samuel Madison (S.M.) Fortson Jr., 84, of 3241 Salem Road, Royston, died March 27, 2002 at the Cobb Memorial Hospital in Royston.

A native of Madison County, he was born Dec. 7, 1917 to the late Samuel Madison Fortson Sr. and the late Clara Bond Fortson. He was the husband of Emma Lou Parten Fortson. He was a farmer and of the Methodist faith.

Survivors include his wife, Emma Lou Parten Fortson, Royston; a son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Kay Fortson, Royston; two daughters and sons-in-law, June and Doug Jones, Royston and Jane and Terry Sexton, Ila; three grandchilden, Chad Jones, Shannon Fortson and Dawn Fortson, all of Royston; three sisters, Jean Fowler, Oakland, Calif., Pemilla Brooks, Concord, N.C., and Madge Wigley, Atlanta; his caregiver, Nellie Coile; and a foster sister, Carolyn Smith.

He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services were held Friday, March 29, 2002 at Pennington Chapel United Methodist Church. The Revs. Earl Goode, Dennis Kesler and Willis Fortson officiated. Burial followed in the Cary Memorial Gardens.

Ronnie Pruitt

LAVONIA-Ronnie Pruitt, 50, of 55 Gumlog Grove Road Extension, Lavonia, died March 28, 2002, following a three year battle with cancer.

A native of Henderson County, N.C., he was the son of the late Joshua and Blanche McClure Pruitt and the husband of Patsy Wood Pruitt. A master woodcrafter for many years, he had worked at Toccoa Casket Company, Disharoon Valley Furniture and Robertson Furniture Manufacturing. He was a deacon and member of Shoal Creek Baptist Church and the O.C. McCurley Sunday School Class,

Survivors include his wife, Patsy Wood Pruitt, of the home; two daughters Sandra Gibson and Christina Pruitt, both of Lavonia; a son, Junior Pruitt, Martin; one sister, Helen Moss, Athens; four brothers, Joe Pruitt, Bogart, Jerry Pruitt, Cumming, Ricky Pruitt, Florida and Stevie Pruitt, Danielsville; and grandchildren Brittany Gibson and Abby Pruitt.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Pruitt.

Funeral services were held March 31, 2002 from the Chapel of Hamby Funeral Home in Lavonia. The Revs. Frank Bearden and Ronald Hinson officiated. Interment followed in the Shoal Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mary Spratlin

ROYSTON-Mary Evelyn Daniels Spratlin, 84, of 95 Phillips St., Royston, died March 29, 2002 at the Cobb Memorial Hospital in Royston.

A native of Vardaman, Miss., she was born March 7, 1918 to the late William Henry and Bessie Leida Evans Daniels. She was the wife of William Morris Spratlin. She was a homemaker and had been the caterer of the Briarcliff Baptist Church in Atlanta. She was a former member of the Coralwood Garden Club and the Royston Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband William Morris Spratlin, Royston; two daughters, Suzanne S. Johnson, Royston and Rosemary S. Smith, Atlanta; and five grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Mardra Daniels Hawkins.

Funeral services were held April 1, 2002 at the Royston Baptist Church. The Revs. Byron Green and Danny Barton officiated. Burial followed in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Royston.

Bertha Mae Price

ROYSTON-Bertha Mae Fowler Price, 78, of 608 Springdale Drive, Royston, died March 28, 2002 at the Cobb Memorial Hospital in Royston.

A native of Franklin County, she was born March 30, 1923 to the late James Mack and Mayola Haley Fowler. Her husband was the late James William (Booty) Price. She was a former co-owner of Booty's Fish House and a member of Peniel Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Survivors include three daughters; Martha Hardman and Diana Johnson, both of Royston, and Stephanie Gardner, Oklahoma City, Okla.; two brothers, Jack Fowler, Kannapolis, N.C. and Boyce Fowler, Royston; six sisters, Cathryn Cromer, Kannapolis, N.C., Rachel Royston, Ruby Brown, Joyce Floyd, Mary Briscoe, all of Royston, and JoAnn Peeples, Canon; seven grandchildren and one great granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by three brothers; Stewart Fowler, L.C. (Pete) Fowler and Marvin Fowler.

Funeral services were held April 1, 2002 at Peniel Pentecostal Holiness Church. The Revs. Gary Osteen, Dennis Kesler, John Ingham and Bert Synan officiated. Burial followed in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Peniel P.H.C. Family LIfe Cener, 2975 Sandy Cross Road, Royston, GA 30662.

Myrtle Ray

ATHENS-Myrtle Reynolds Ray, 71, died March 28, 2002.

A native of McDuffie County, she was the daughter of the late Alfred Cornelius and Effie Lexie Askew Reynolds. Her husband was the late William S. Ray. She was a member of Prince Avenue Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law; Patti and the Rev. Randy Smith, Royston; a sister, Ruby Reynolds Smith, Athens; three grandchildren, Kristin Adams, Douglas, Greg Smith, Elberton and Jim Ray, Allendale, S.C.; and five great grandchildren, Kelsie Adams, Emily Smith, Carlie Adams, Adam Smith and Melissa Smith.

She was preceded in death by a son, David Ray, and grandson Bill Ray.

Funeral services were held March 30, 2002 at Lord and Stephens Chapel, East. The Revs. Chris Adams, Bill Ricketts and Randy Smith officiated. Interment followed in Evergreen Memorial Park.
