Willie Joe Roberson
LAVONIA - Willie Joe Hicks Roberson, 76, of 7395 Hwy 59, died April 14, 2004 at her home.

Born May 24, 1927 in Turner County, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Milton and Melzie Roe Hicks. The wife of William Ed Roberson Sr. was a seamstress, poultry farmer and homemaker, and was a member of the Old Canon Baptist Church.

Survivors in addition to her husband, include sons, Roy Royston of Canon, and Tiny Royston of Toccoa; sister, Doris H. Young, Maitland, Fla.; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services were held April 16, 2004 in the Pruitt Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Williard Fitzpatrick and Jack Evans officiated. Burial followed in the Old Canon Baptist Church Cemetery.

Thelma Mehr
HARTWELL - Thelma Todd Fleming Mehr, 82, of 135 Highland Ave., died April 13, 2004 at Hart County Hospital in Hartwell.

A native of Hart County, she was born Nov. 19, 1921 to the late Sam E. Todd and Lois Reynolds Todd. She was twice married, first to the late Watson Fleming and then the late Ed Mehr. She was a retired dental assistant, a member of the retired teachers’ association, the Hartwell First United Methodist Church, Live Wire Sunday School Class, Lessie K. Page UMW Group and was a former MYF leader and choir member.

Survivors include her daughter and son - in - law, Carol Fleming Head and Bob Head, Blairsville; step - son, Gary Mehr and his wife Julie of Atlanta; step - daughter, Cathy McClure and her husband Charles of Evans; brother, Roy Todd, Bowman; sisters, Jewel Moore, Hartwell, Newel Adams, Austell, Ruth Dickerson, Hartwell, and Archey Segars, Martin; grandchildren, LuAnn Head Farris, Robert Head III, Mike Head and Kevin Head, and four step grandchildren and four great and step - great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held April 16, 2004 at the Hartwell First United Methodist Church. The Revs. R. Allen Stewart and Jim Winn officiated. Interment followed in the Nancy Hart Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to Hartwell First United Methodist Church Capital Fund, 200 East Howell St., Hartwell, GA 30643 or to the Prayer Pager Ministry of First United Methodist Church of Union County, 859 Hwy 515, Blairsville, GA 30512.

Sara Chafin
HARTWELL - Sara Whitaker Chafin, 95, of 1260 Elberton Hwy. died April 13, 2004 at her home.

The Harlem native was born June 7, 1908 to the late Toombs Alexander Whitaker and Mary Anna Hatcher Whitaker. She was the wife of the late William Vernon Chafin Sr. and was retired from Hart County School System as a home economics teacher after 24 years of service, and a total of 30 years in teaching. She was the three - time president and charter president of the Pilot Club of Hartwell, past regionant for the D.A.R., a member of the Retired Teachers of Hart County, Hartwell Women’s Club, and Madora Garden Club. She was a member of the Hartwell First United Methodist Church, Live Wire Sunday School Class, Lessie K. Page Circle and the UMW.

Survivors include sons and daughters - in - law, William V. “Bill” Jr. and Kaye Chafin, Hartwell, Thomas L. “Tom Chafin: CDR U.S. Navy ret. and Pat Chafin, Virginia Beach, Va.; grandchildren, Sally LeSage, Mary K. Woods, Will Chafin, Lee Chafin, and James Chafin, and 10 great grandchildren; sisters - in - law, Mildred Z. Whitaker, Norcross, Velma Chafin, Norwood, and Nina C. Jones, Thompson.

She was preceded in death by her grandchild Jamie Chafin and eight brothers and sisters.

The Revs. R. Allen Stewart, Jim Winn, and David Sargent officiated at the funeral services, held April 16, 2004 at Hartwell First United Methodist Church. Burial followed in Nancy Hart Memorial Park.

M.C. Cawthon Jr.
LAVONIA - M.C. Cawthon Jr., 86, of 12430 Augusta Rd., Lavonia, died April 14, 2004 at Hart County Hospital in Hartwell following an extended illness.

Born April 4, 1918 in Franklin County, he was the son of the late M.C. Cawthon Sr. and Ella Pruitt Cawthon, and the husband of Jo Nell Andrews Cawthon. He was a prominent Lavonia businessman for many years as co - owner of Cawthon Brothers Grocery, City Auto and Tire Company, C and C Motors and Cawthon Brothers Rental Properties. He was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by his loving wife, Jo Nell Andrews Cawthon of the home; daughter and son - in - law, Sandra and Doug King of Lavonia; sister, Mildred Cawthon Williams of Toccoa; brothers, Fred and James Cawthon, both of Lavonia; and grandchildren Beth King and David King.

He was preceded in death by his sister Helen Cawthon Whiting.

Funeral services were held April 17, 2004 in the chapel of Hamby Funeral Home in Lavonia. The Revs. Sammy Lee and Ed Floyd officiated and musical selections were rendered by Mrs. Janice Vickery. Interment followed in Franklin Memorial Gardens, North in Lavonia.

Hamby Funeral Home in Lavonia was in charge of the arrangements.

M.C. Cawthon Jr.

Leon G. Thomason
BOWERSVILLE - Mary “Leon” Gurley Thomason, 75, of 280 Flat Shoal Rd., died April 15, 2004 at her home.

The Hart County native was born Aug. 12, 1928 to the late Lee Gurley and the late Madge Whitworth Gurley. The wife of the late Robert C. “Buddy” Thomason was a homemaker, and a member of Cross Roads Baptist Church and the WMU.

Survivors include sons, Robert Daniel Thomason, Tampa, Fla., Charles Dennis Thomason, Norcross, Stephen Ray Thomason, Robert Charles Thomason, and Jeffrey Thomason, all of Bowersville; daughters, Pamela Schuster, Bowersville, and Peggy Lynn Thomason, Clarkesville; brothers, Dwain Gurley and Joe Gurley, both of Bowersville; sisters, Helen G. Terry, Clemson, S.C., and Shirley G. Green, Bowersville; grandchildren, Matt Thomason, Rebecca Thomason, and Danny Schuster; and great grandchildren, Alyssa and Savannah.

She was preceded in death by brothers, Frank, Bobby, Johnny and Buster Gurley; and sisters, Betty Duncan and Kathelene Wells.

The Revs. Ben Coleman and Connie Mack Bowers officiated at the funeral services, held April 17, 2004 at Cross Roads Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery, officiated by the Rev. Carl McGaha officiated.

Memorials may be made to Vista Care Hospice, 767 Oglethorpe Ave., Athens, GA 30606.

Sandra Worley
ROYSTON - Sandra Rousey Worley, 61, of 736 Ginn’s Pool Rd., died April 16, 2004 at Hart County Hospital in Hartwell.

A native of Elbert County, she was born Jan. 21, 1943 to the late J.C. and Wilma Ruth Yearwood Rousey. She was retired from a career in nursing and was a member of Price Chapel Holiness Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Lisa Renae Worley, Royston; half - brother, Billy Rousey, Royston; step - brothers, Claudie Pulliam, Athens, Wayne Pulliam, Bowman, and Jerry Pulliam, Royston; grandchildren, Justin, Joshua, Matthew, Brandon, and Daniel Worley, and great granddaughter, Maggie Leigh Worley.

The Rev. Johnny Stowe officiated at the funeral services, held April 18, 2004 at the Pruitt Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in the Hill Crest Cemetery.

Gladys M. Stone
DANVILLE, KY. - Gladys M. Stone, 78, of Danville, Ky., formerly of Lavonia, died April 14, 2004 after an extended illness.

The daughter of the late Bruce Hawks and Focie Mae Hawks Caves was born in Logan, W.Va. on Aug. 6, 1925, and was the wife of the late Lonnie E. “Grump” Stone. She and her husband owned and operated the House of Stones, a jewelry store located in Whitesville, W.Va. where they were the creator/originator of coal jewelry and coal figurines that were distributed throughout the country. She was a charter and lifetime member of the Sylvester Baptist Church and a member of the First Baptist Church in Danville.

Survivors include her son and daughter - in - law, Mike and Connie Stone, Seth W.Va.; daughters and son - in - law, Rosalind Chapman, Charles Town, W.Va., and Debbie and Edmond Jarrell, Danville, Ky.; six grandchildren and six great - grandchildren; sister and brother - in - law, Christine and Jim Bryant, Augusta; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by sisters, Madeline Gabany and Pauline Carpet; and brothers, Bruce and Charles Hawks.

Services were held April 19, 2004 at the Sylvester Baptist Church. The Rev. David Minturn officiated. Burial followed in Pine View Cemetery at Orgas, W.Va.

Memorials may be made to the Sylvester Baptist Church Mission Fund, Sylvester, W.Va.

W.T. Phillips
DANIELSVILLE - W.T. Phillips, 81, of 3588 Hwy 29 N, died April 16, 2004, at Athens Regional Medical Center in Athens.

A native of Franklin County, he was born Feb. 13, 1923 to the late Wiley and Lillie Phillips. He was the husband of Ouida Daniel Phillips and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors in addition to his wife include sons, Dr. T. Wayne Phillips, Sundance, Wyo., the Rev. James M. Phillips, Athens, Timothy W., Ricky L., and Jeffrey R. Phillips, all of Royston; daughter, Carolyn Seagraves, Hull; brothers, J.O., Steward, and C.J. Phillips, all of Danielsville; sisters, Sara Daniels, Bobbie Hattaway, and Geneva Gordy, all of Danielsville; 15 grandchildren, and 21 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

The Revs. George Lovely and Ray Jenkins officiated at the funeral services, held April 18, 2004 at the Pruitt Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in the Bluestone Baptist Church Cemetery.

John Scott Hartness
Hartness

COMMERCE - John Scott Hartness, 19, of 6425 Bold Springs Rd., died April 15, 2004 at Cobb Memorial Hospital.

A native of Gwinnett County, he was born Dec. 14, 1984 to Lisa Oliver Hartness and Calvin Hartness. The Franklin County High School senior was a two - time state pole vault champion, tied for third on Georgia’s all - time best pole vaulter list, held the meet record for pole vault at GA Tech Invitational, and was ranked sixth in the nation in pole vaulting. He was coached by Rik Moore.

He is survived by his parents, Lisa and Calvin Hartness of Commerce; brother, Seajae Hartness of Commerce; and grandparents Newton Oliver and Amelia Oliver of Duluth, and Wilma Hartness and Calvin Hartness Sr. of Atlanta.

The Rev. Tommy Childress officiated at the services, held April 17, 2004 at Little - Ward Funeral Home in Commerce. Burial followed in Jackson Memorial Gardens in Commerce.

Maria Cece
CARNESVILLE - Maria Maino Cece, 96, of 16 Turkey Creek Rd., died April 15, 2004 at her residence.

Born Nov. 12, 1907 in Newark, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Aldo and Sarah M. Devlin Maino. The wife of Philip Paul Cece Sr. was a homemaker, was of the Catholic faith, and attended the Lavonia United Methodist Church.

Survivors in addition to her husband are daughter, Carol Ann Davis of Lavonia; son, Philip P. Cece Jr. of Foresthill, Calif.; five grandchildren, nine great - grandchildren, and one great - great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her granddaughter Lauren Marie McCabe.

Henrietta Hart
ROYSTON - Henrietta McEver Hart, 64, of 331 Hudson Terrace, died April 18, 2004 at her home.

The Jackson County native was born Feb. 23, 1940 to the late Hubert and Louise McEver and was the wife of Roy Lee Hart. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include her husband, Roy Lee Hart; daughters, Debbie McCollum, Sherrie Ayers, Sherry Combs, and Melinda Dobbs, all of Royston; 10 grandchildren and one great - grandchild; and sister, Mary Meincke of Medway, Mass.

She was preceded in death by her brother William McEver.

Funeral services were held April 19, 2004 in the B.D. Ginn Memorial Chapel of Ginn Funeral Home in Carnesville. The Rev. Earl Goode and Christopher Ayers officiated. Burial followed in the Trinity United Methodist Church Cemetery.
