Lola Poythress
Miss Lola (Aunt Lola) Poythress, 89, of Ashton Woods Nursing Home in Atlanta died Sunday.
Miss Poythress, born July 25, 1914, in Troup County, was the daughter of the late Bud and Josephine Byrd Poythress. She was a homemaker and active member of Rock Mount Baptist Church.
Survivors include many close nieces, nephews, godchildren, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Precious, Willie Mae and Cora and three brothers, Jim, Jocephus and Arnett.
Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Rocky Mount Baptist Church at 515 Hillcrest Road with the Rev. Terry Barnes officiating. Burial will be in Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery on Highway 54 in Hogansville.
The family will be at the home of her niece and nephew at 1200 Second Avenue.
Lakes - Dunson - Robertson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Merle Farrar Johnson
Merle Farrar Johnston, 79, of Columbus, died Monday at Pine Manor Nursing Home for injuries received in an automobile accident.
Mrs. Johnston, born Dec. 23, 1923, in Standing Rock, was the daughter of the late Lewis Parrish and Sallie Abbott Farrar. She graduated in 1941 from Five Points High School, where she was an accomplished basketball player. She lived in Columbus most of her life and attended First Presbyterian Church of Columbus. She was a registered nurse having attended the old City Hospital Nursing School which was adjacent to what is now Columbus Regional Hospital. For the last 30 years she worked as a private duty nurse.
Survivors include three sons, Robert G. and Lois Johnston III, Lewis Johnston and David Douglas Johnston, all of Columbus; a daughter and her husband, Carol Eileen Johnston and Kevin Kliener of Auburn, Ala.; a sister, Joy Farrar Pike of Fredonia, Ala.; three brothers, Ed Farrar of Abbottsford, Richard Farrar of Lanett, Ala. and Henry Farrar of Greenville.; five grandchildren, Farrar Ross Johnston, Margaret McKay Johnston and Diego Montenegro, Victoria Glenn Johnston, Charles Lewis Johnston Jr. and Elizabeth Anne Johnston. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert G. Johnston Jr. and a brother, James Farrar.
Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday in Parkhill Cemetery with the Rev. Charles Hasty Jr. officiating.
The family will receive friends at Striffler - Hamby Mortuary Macon Road Chapel this evening from 5 until 7.
In lieu of flowers, those so desiring may contribute to a favorite charity in memory of Mrs. Johnston.

John R. Hines Jr.
John R. Hines Jr. of Hogansville died Wednesday at Hospice LaGrange.
Mr. Hines was the son of the late John Ransom and Mary Gilbert Hines, attended school in Hogansville and was a 1952 graduate of the Darlington School and a 1956 graduate of Emory University where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta Social Fraternity. He served as an oficer on active duty in the Navy for three years in the late 1950ís. He was president of The Citizens Bank in Hogansville for a numbr of years and after the merger with Flag Bank, he retired in June of 2000. He was a civic and business leader, having served on a number of community boards in Troup County.
Survivors include his wife, Charlene Morse Hines of Hogansville; two daughters, Peggy Hines of Charleston, S.C., and Christy Searels of Hogansville; a sister, Mary Hines Craven of Washington; and a grandson, Gavin Searels of Hogansville.
Memorial services will be at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, contribution may be made to the LaGrange College Annual Fund, 601 Broad St., LaGrange to a favorite charity in memory of Mr. Hines.
Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home of Hogansville is in charge of arrangements.

Littie Vera Leonard
Mrs. Littie Vera Leonard of 127 Grady St. died Tuesday at Westminister Commons Nursing Home in Atlanta.
Mrs. Leonard, born in Troup County, was the daughter of the late Felix Boykin and Evelyne Williams. She was a member of Valley Grove Baptist Church and was formerly employed at City - County Hospital.
survivors include two daughters, Annie Steed of Atlanta, and Evelyne Leonard of LaGrange; three sons, earl Leonard of Asheboro, N.C., harry Leonard of College park, and Johnny Leonard of Atlanta; three sisters, Elsie Hayes of Lagrange, Amanda Becton of San Diego, Calif., and Mabel Pritchett of Cleveland Ohio. A brother Maffett Boykin of Decatur, nine grandchildren, six great - grandchildren and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her husband, Pittman Leonard.
Graveside services will be Friday at 11 a.m. in Restlawn Memory gardens with Dr. Stephen E. Duke officiating.
The family will receive friends at West Georgia Mortuary this evening from 6 until 7.

Nathaniel Gates
Nathaniel Gates, 40, of 302 Ware St., died Thursday at his home.
Mr. Gates, born Sept. 20. 1963, in Troup County, was the son of Nathan Truitt and Ruth Beasley.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include two children, Antonio Harris and Brincess Gates of LaGrange; grandson, Demonta Harris; eight sisters, Chemonica (Telly) Fanning, Melissa, Tiffany and Tika Beasley, Valerie and Sandra McFarland, and Denise and Carmela Truitt; five brothers, Dexter Gates, Douglas Beasley, Kinta Beasley, and Andre Gilbert, all of LaGrange, and Albert Beasley of Rapid City, S.D.; aunts, Laura White, Margaret Allen, Evelyn Sherman, Agnes Gay, Emma Truitt, Julia Kate Truitt, Marie Dudley, and Shirley Ann Gates; an uncle, Jafus Truitt; a great aunt, Emma Lou Martin; stepfather, Moses Beasley; close friends, Shirley Jackson, Brenda Moore, Stanley Cameron, and Wendell Morris; cousins and other relatives.
Funeral services will be Friday at 3 p.m. at L Louise United Methodist Church it the Rev. George Beasley officiating. Burial will be in the Needmore cemetery.
The family will be at the home of his father at 702B Revis Street and at the home of his mother, at 24 East Beasley Road in the Louise Community.
Lakes - Dunson - Robertson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Claude E. Lester
Claude E. Lester, former resident of Fuquay - Varina, died in Waco, Texas on Sept. 18, 2003.
Mr. Lester was born Nov. 9, 1918 to Duma Carl and Hattie (MacLeod) Lester in Alabama.
The family moved to LaGrange at some point so that it was the only Lester home place known to his children. After Rabun Gap College, other jobs and training, in 1940 he went to LaGrange with his bride Becky, (Lucy Rebekah Whatley), where two of their three children would be born. In 1948, the family moved to a small town in North Carolina where he started a manufacturing plant specializing in diapers and other baby products. He returned to LaGrange in 1957 as production manager for the Playtex factory until 1963. His son, Bud (Buddy), graduated from LaGrange High School followed by a degree from LaGrange College. Daughter, Sandra, started her high school years at LaGrange. LaGrange, as the home, place or birth place, held a special place in the hearts of the family and it was his wish to send his earthly farewell to any who may remember him or his family.
Survivors include his wife, Elah Lester of Waco, Texas; a son and daughter - in - law, Bud and Kelly Lester of Lewisville, Texas; a daughter and son - in - law, Sandra and Clive Turner of Roanoke, Texas; four grandchildren and their spouses, Jeffrey and Amber Lester of Carrollton, Texas, E.W. Newlin of Columbus; Jeremy Lester of Waco, Texas; Wendi and Brad Mason of Georgetown, Texas; great - grandchildren, Jack Mason of Georgetown Texas, Olivia Lester of Carrollton, Texas, and Lea Newlin of Palmetto. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lucy Rebekah Lester and a son, Michael B. Lester.

Crogman Williams
Mr. Crogman Williams, 66, of 234 Church Ave. in Pine Mountain, died Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003, at his home.
Mr. Williams, a native of Harris County, was born Sept. 29, 1937, and was the son of Ethel Williams and the late Ralph Williams. He was retired from the Dunson Plant of West Point Pepperell with 37 years of service and was a member and deacon of New Solomon Grove Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary E. Smith Williams.
Survivors in addition to his mother include one son and daughter - in - law, the Rev. Ervin and Earnestine Smith of Pine Mountain; two daughters and a son - in - law, Mrs. Gloria Leslie and Mary C. and Raymond Hill, all of LaGrange; three brothers and their spouses, Dewey and Minnie Williams, Harris F. Williams, all of Pine Mountain, and Ralph E. and Barbara Williams of LaGrange; two sisters, Mrs. Mary A. Lane and Ms. Elizabeth Williams, both of Pine Mountain; two sisters - in - law and their spouses, Ada and Frank Rutherford of Cleveland, Ohio, and Margaret and Fred Amos of LaGrange; uncles and a spouse, Lumus and Lovie Turner and Carnal Turner, all of Pine Mountain; aunts, Mrs. Willie F. Fannin, Mrs. Annie Bonner, both of LaGrange, Mrs. Geneva Turner of Pine Mountain, Mrs. Willie M. Hardy of Detroit, Mich., Mrs. Susie K. Williams of Columbus, Mrs. Ethel Williams of Phenix City, Ala., and Mrs. Lois Williams of Atlanta; 13 grandchildren, 21 great - grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
The funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Monday at the New Solomon Grove Baptist Church in Pine Mountain with the Rev. Ervin Smith officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at their home and will receive friends at the funeral home this evening from 7 until 8:30.
Lakes - Dunson - Robertson Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

The Rev. Henry L. Johnson, 82, of Hogansville died Monday at Fayette Community Hospital in Fayetteville.
Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Mackey - Wilson - Jennings Funeral Home.

Shirley Roberts
Mrs. Shirley Ann Thornton Roberts, 58, of 1006C Baldwin St., formerly of Chicago, Ill., and Dayton, Ohio, died Friday at West Georgia Medical Center.
Mrs. Roberts, born Nov. 19, 1944, in Troup County, was the daughter of Mrs. Susie Mae Thornton. She attended East Depot High School and moved to Dayton at age 17. She then moved to Chicago and received and A. A. degree in early childcare and was employed at Laurance Armour Daycare for 30 years. She returned to LaGrange in 2000 and was a member of the God of Deliverance world Ministries.
Survivors, in addition to her mother, include a son, Pastor Alonzo and Necole Roberts; daughters, Tanya Roberts and fiance Tyrone McFarland, and Tamara Coleman, all of LaGrange; three sisters, Mary Lee and Edward Johnson of Chicago, Dorothy Thornton and Sylvia Tucker, both off LaGrange; 14 grandchildren, Chenika, Alonzo Jr., Angel, Eric, Willie, Warren, Aquila, Jeremiah, Kevin Jr. Tanesha, LaKiet, Juhon, Tyreana, and Tyana; two great - grandchildren, Quashun and Quwayasha; eight nephews, Clarence of Atlanta, Tommie and Shanta Delawerance, Fredrick and Michelle, Kevin and Devate all of Illinois, and Darrin and Jonathan; four nieces, Tangyle, Barbara and Jeff, Janeka and Kimberly; seven great - nieces, four great - nephews, three special friends, Bertha Stargell, Evelyn Ward and Arlene McFarland; and a number of aunts, cousins, in laws, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at the New Life Evangelistic Center on Jenkins Street with Pastors Willie Phillips and Alonzo Roberts officiating. Burial will be in Southview Cemetery.
The family will be at the home of her mother, Susie Thornton at 1006C Baldwin St., and the home of her daughter, Tanya Roberts at 21A Habersham Dr. and will receive friends this evening at Lakes - Dunson - Robertson Funeral Home from 7 until 8.

Charmaine Hines
Charmaine Demetria Hines, 30, of Hampton, Va., died Friday, October 17, 2003.
Miss Hines, born in Troup County, was the daughter of Charles Edward and Vivian Fannin Hines and attended public school in LaGrange. She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church in Hampton, Va.
Survivors, in addition to her parents, include three brothers, Carey Hines, Gary Hines and Charlie Edward Hines, Jr.; a sister, Jasmine Hines; a grandmother, Sallie Fannin Cameron; and a grandfather, P.S. Lewis.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Leete Hill United Methodist Church with Evangelist Ambronicus Harris officiating. Burial will be in Southview Cemetery.
The family will be at the home of her grandmother at 209 West Crovat St.
West Georgia Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Funeral services for James M. McGouirk, 40, of Grantville will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville. Burial will be in Coke Chapel United Methodist Church in Coweta County.
