Mrs. Marlene A. Bass
Mrs. Marlene Adams Bass, 83, of Hogansville, Ga., died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2003 at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange, Ga.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27 at graveside in Myrtle Hill Cemetery in Hogansville with Pastor Chris Yarbrough officiating.

The family will receive friends at the funeal home 6-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26.

Mrs. Bass was born Sept. 19, 1920 in Centralhatchee, daughter of the late Lennie and Ossie Screws Adams. A resident of Hogansville for the past year, she lived in LaGrange most of her life, was a member of the First Baptist Church of LaGrange and was a retired property manager.

Surviving are three sons and their wives, Joe and Shelly Bass and Jim Bass, all of Hogansville, and John and Mary Grace Bass of Toccoa; and grandchildren, Joseph Hunter Bass and James Dawson Holloway.

Mr. Harry A. Smith
Mr. Harry A. Smith, 76, of Newnan, Ga., died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2003 at his residence.

He was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church and of the Sylvan Lodge.

Surviving are daughter, Paula Griffith of Lawrenceville, Ga.; brother, S. O. Smith of Dublin, Ga.; one granddaughter and one great-grandson; three nephews, two great-nieces and one great-nephew.

The family will receive friends at McKoon Funeral Home 6-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26.

A funeral will be at Macedonia Baptist Church 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27 with Rev. John Riley and Rev. Searcy Jackson officiating. Burial will be in Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery.

Contributions may be made to the Shriners' Childrens' Hospital or Macedonia Baptist Church.

Mrs. Carrie Louise Atkins
Mrs. Carrie Louise Atkins, 80, of Newnan, Ga., died Sept. 23, 2003 at Newnan Hospital East.

She was born June 28, 1923 in Coweta County to William Lassetter and Clara Phillips Lassetter. She worked at West Point Pepperell. She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis Atkins. She was a member of the Charity Baptist Church. She loved gospel singing and was a member of the gospel group "The Atkins Family." She loved the Lord and her family.

Surviving are sons and daughters-in-law, Dan and Linda Atkins of Franklin, Ga., Randy and Billie Atkins of Newnan; daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie Martin and her husband Pat of Newnan; sister and brother-in-law, Anne E. Byrom and her husband Robert of Newnan; nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

A funeral is Friday, Sept. 26 at 2 p.m. in Higgins Hillcrest Chapel with Rev. Harry Parkerson, Rev. Terry Calhoun and Rev. Donald Ayers officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Thursday, Sept. 25 from 6-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Higgins Hillcrest Chapel, Newnan, Ga.

Mr. Richard Lee Bigger
Mr. Richard Lee Bigger, 19, of Newnan, Ga., died Sept. 22, 2003 due to injuries sustained from an automobile accident.

Mr. Bigger was born Oct. 10, 1983. A member of Friendship Baptist Church in Fairburn, he loved life and lived it to the fullest.

Surviving are his parents, father, Richard Truelove of Newnan, and mother, Jo Ann Hill of Newnan; brother, Robert Hill of Newnan; grandmother, Margaret Dame of Atlanta.

A funeral will be at graveside Thursday, Sept. 25 at 10:45 a.m. in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens in College Park, Ga.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the graveside service, at Higgins Hillcrest Chapel.

Mrs. Reathey Samples
Mrs. Reathey Elizabeth Samples, 76, of Carrollton, Ga., died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2003.

Mrs. Samples was born in Fulton County, Ga., Feb. 16, 1927, daughter of Pontanoss Jacobs and Minnie Lou Riley Jacobs. She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist Faith.

Surviving are daughters and sons-in-law, Helen and Bobby Green, Winston, Hazel and Marvin Stull, Newnan, Irene and Dorcus Bundy, Miami, Pamela Thomason, Sugar Hill, Ga., Louellen Cruz, Austell; sons and daughters-in-law, Earl and Gail Samples, Temple, Dewey Dan and Laura Samples, Temple; sisters and brothers-in-law, Minnie Lou and J. C. Beach, Quincey, Fla., Vernell and Dan Halborn, Douglasville; brother and sister-in-law, Junior and Edna Jacobs, Newnan; 23 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

A funeral will be Thursday, Sept. 25 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Almon Funeral Home in Carrollton with Brother Carrol Rhodes officiating. Music will be furnished by Brother Carrol and Barbara Rhodes.

The family was receiving friends at the funeral home 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24.

Pallbearers include Wesley Bailey, Tim Allen, Bobby Green, James Green and Paul Bennett.

Burial will be in Dawn Memorial Park in Decatur, Ga. at 2 p.m.

Mr. LeRoy Thornton
Mr. LeRoy Thornton, 92, of Hines Road, Hogansville, Ga., died Monday, Sept. 22, 2003.

Funeral arrangements will be announced later.

Mr. George King
Mr. George King, 62, of Newnan, Ga., died Sept. 22, 2003 at his residence.

He was born Feb. 26, 1941 in Cherokee County, Ala., to George and Dora May (Parrish) King.

He was self-employed in automobile sales and was a member of Mills Chapel Baptist Church. He loved motorcycles and cars, was a gourmet chef and was proud of and loved his grandchildren.

A funeral will be at Higgins Hillcrest Chapel Wednesday, Sept. 24 at noon. Dr. Tim Driggers officiating.

Visitation will be Tuesday, Sept. 23 from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Surviving are his former wife, Margaret Mulkey of Newnan; daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Bobby Culver of Newnan; brothers, Hugh King of Alabama, Billy King of Rome, Ga., Marvin King of Alabama; sister, Dorothy Armour of Canton, Ga.; brother-in-law, Clint Otwell of Newnan; grandchildren, Collin and Courtney Culver.

In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make donations to West Georgia Hospice, 1510 Vernon Rd., LaGrange, Ga. 30240; or Mills Chapel Baptist Church Building Fund, 5 Hering Dr., Newnan, Ga. 30265.

Higgins Hillcrest Chapel, Newnan, Ga.

Mr. Horace Palmer
Mr. Horace Palmer, 55, of Moreland, Ga., died Sept. 23, 2003 at Hospice LaGrange.

Mr. Palmer was born March 29, 1948 in McCurmick, S.C., to Eugene and Mattie (Finley) Palmer. He was a mechanic for Roadway Express for more than 24 years and was a member of Grace Baptist Church. He was a great lover of auto racing and was crew chief for P&R Mud Racing Team. He loved the mountains and fishing. He had a special love for his grandchildren.

A funeral will be at Higgins Hillcrest Chapel Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003 at 2 p.m. Rev. Mike Sprayberry and Rev. Terry Calhoun will officiate. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

Visitation is Wednesday, Sept. 24 from 6-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Surviving are his wife, Shirley Palmer of Moreland; son, David Palmer of Moreland; daughters and sons-in-law, Kay and Mike Sprayberry of Whitesburg, Christy and Ross Rogers of Moreland; brothers, Clint Palmer of Newnan, Billy Andrews of South Carolina; sister, Frances Moon, Lincolnton, Ga.; grandchildren, Jonathan Rogers, Kimberly Rogers, Austin Palmer, Joshua Sprayberry, Christopher Palmer, Anna Sprayberry and Justin Rogers.

Mr. Bob Norton Rickman
Mr. Bob Norton Rickman, 75, died Sept. 19, 2003.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James Burton Rickman and Effie Norton Rickman; his brother, Wilburn Rickman; and sisters, Alma Henderson, Kate Power and Sarah Jane Whiten.

Surviving are several nephews and nieces.

He was a resident of Newnan and retired from Newnan Hospital. He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, was a leader with the Flint River Council of the Boy Scouts of America, and a member of the McIntosh Masonic Lodge.

A memorial service will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church Sept. 25, at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends after the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 576 Roscoe Road, Newnan, Ga. 30263.

Private burial will be in Otto, North Carolina.

Mrs. Lucile Shokes
Mrs. Lucile Shokes, recently of Newnan, died Sept. 21, 2003.

Margaret Lucile Breihahn Shokes, widow of Charles H. Shokes, had been a resident of the assisted living at Wesley Woods of Newnan-Peachtree City on Highway 29 North in Newnan, Ga., but was a life-long resident of Charleston, South Carolina.

A funeral will be Friday, Sept. 26, at 11 a.m. in J. Henry Stuhr, Downtown Chapel, Charleston, S.C.. Burial will be in Bethany Cemetery. Friends may call at Stuhr's Downtown Chapel Thursday between 5 and 7 p.m.

Mrs. Shokes, affectionately known by family as "Aunt Jimmy," was born April 26, 1916 in Decatur, Ga., the daughter of Julius W. Breihahn and Lily E. Wittschen Briehahn. She retired as a Registered Medical Clinical Secretary. She was a member of Citadel Square Baptist Church, Professional Women's Business Association, The American Legion Auxiliary and The Rutledge Rejoicers.

Surviving are Gina, Marty and Luke Weathersby of Newnan and other nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
