Mrs. Earlie Mae Ferrell Ward
Mrs. Earlie Mae "Peggy" Ferrell Ward, 55, of Atlanta, died Friday, Feb. 7, 2003.

Mrs. Ward was born March 18, 1947, to Merrell and Sallie C. Ferrell. She was the seventh of 10 children.

Mrs. Ward joined the White Oak Grove Baptist Church at an early age, and served faithfully on the Usher's Board until her heath failed. She married Lynwood Ward, Jr., on Aug. 2, 1974, and was a graduate of the Central High School Class of 1966.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Melvin Ferrell, Jr., John Ferrell II, and Robert Ferrell.

A funeral will be held Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003, at 1 p.m. at White Oak Grove Baptist Church in Senoia. The Rev. Kenneth Bailey will officiate, and burial will be in the church cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers will be Andre Ferrell, Michael Ferrell, Jerome Ferrell, Jermaine Taylor, Christopher Ferrell, Nathan Ferrell, Emmanuel Ferrell, Craig Ward, and Kevin Penson. The Central High Class of 1966 will serve as honorary pallbearers.

The cortege will assemble at 35 Line Creek Road in Haralson at noon.

Surviving are her husband of 28 years, Lynwood Ward, Jr.; daughters and sons-in-law Chantrice and Randolph Cousin, and Patrilla and Alhagie Kuyateh; grandchildren Braxton Harris, Rodrick Cousin, and Adriana Ward; sisters Jessie L. Ferrell, Virginia Ferrell, and Gloria Caldwell and her husband Henry; brothers Mr. and Mrs. William Ferrell, Nathaniel Ferrell, and George Ferrell; three aunts; 11 sisters-in-law; five brothers-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Eugenia Hodges Sawyer
Mrs. Eugenia Hodges Sawyer, 72, died Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, at the home of her daughter, Cynthia Nunn.

Born in Nashville, Mrs. Sawyer was the daughter of the late Eugene Estille Hodges and Anna Gordon Givens Hodges. Mrs. Sawyer was preceded in death by her husband, C. Hugh Sawyer.

As the wife of a U.S. Navy pilot, she made her home in many places, including Guantanamo Bay, Cuba during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. She was an artist who enjoyed painting, stained glass and needlework.

Survivors include five daughters and sons-in-law, Cynthia and Wesley Nunn of Milledgeville, Helen and Xavier Ponce of Guayaquil, Ecuador, Laura and David Crumbley of McDonough, Susan and Michael Dull of McDonough, and Frances Fields of Memphis; one sister, Rebecca H. Talbot of Nashville; 11 grandchildren, Natalie and Lisa Nunn, Rebecca Procel, Elizabeth, Alexandra and Catherine Ponce, Jennifer Woodcock, Emily and Andrew Crumbley, and Michael and Carson Dull; four great grandchildren, Madison and Grace Woodcock, Gabriela and Andres Procel.

A memorial service will be held Monday, Feb. 10, 2003, at 2 p.m. at McDonough First United Methodist Church, with Dr. C.R. Hill officiating.

The family will receive visitors at Haisten Funeral Home in McDonough today from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m.

Mr. Charles Hugh 'Buddy' Warren Sr.
Mr. Charles Hugh 'Buddy' Warren Sr., of Sol Bridges Road, died Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, at his residence.

A native of Troup County, he was born April 10, 1928, the son of the late George Ralph Warren and Mabel Carr Warren Kelley. A son, Charles Hugh Warren Jr., preceded him in death.

A retired master sergeant, he was an aircraft mechanic at Dobbins Air Force Base. His military service also included a tour of duty during the Korean Conflict.

'Buddy,' as he was best known by family and friends, was a member of The Sargent Baptist Church and Sylvan Lodge #429.

Survivors include his wife, Charlotte Jones Warren; a son, John Marcus 'Mark' Warren and his wife Nancy; a daughter-in-law, Lynn Warren; grandchildren, Scott Clellon Warren, David Erel Warren, and Richard Andrew Warren; brothers, George Ralph Warren and James C. Warren; and a sister, Ruth W. Aldridge, all of Newnan.

A funeral service will be held today at 2 p.m. at the chapel of McKoon Funeral Home, with Reverend Joe Bufford officiating. Interment, with Masonic rites, will be at Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitation was Saturday, February 8, 2003, at McKoon Funeral Home.

Mr. Thomas Glenn Vineyard
Mr. Thomas Glenn Vineyard, 76, of Frisco, Texas, previously of Newnan, died Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, at Victoria Gardens Nursing Home in Frisco.

A funeral service will be held graveside today at 4 p.m. at Cokes Chapel Cemetery. The family will receive friends at McKoon Funeral Home from 2:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m.

Survivors include a son, Thomas G. 'Chip' Vineyard II, of McKinney, Texas; a sister, Ruby Lord of Hogansville; and two grandchildren.

Capt. James Miles Dillard Jr.
Capt. James Miles Dillard Jr., 71, of Moore Street, Whitesburg, Ga., died Wednesday, February 5, 2003.

Capt. Dillard, a native of Miami, Fla., was born April 10, 1931 to the late James Miles Dillard Sr. and Mildred Elizabeth Miller Dillard.

He was a retired airline pilot with Eastern Airlines and a member of Southwest Christian Church.

Dillard was hired by Eastern Airlines in 1957. During his 29-year career with the airline, he was an active member of the Airline Pilots Association and held many positions with the organization. He served as the co-pilot representative for two years. He was also a member of the Eastern Master Executive Council regarding contractual issues. In addition, he served on the System Board of Adjustments, Pilots and Flight Attendants committee, Grievance committee, and was Parliamentarian of the LEC. Capt. Dillard was also extremely dedicated to his family, leaving behind a wife of 48 years, three children and six grandchildren.

Surviving are his wife, Jane Ann Dillard, Whitesburg; sons, James Miles Dillard III and Sterrett Timothy Dillard, both of Whitesburg; daughter, Julie Ann Duke, Oneonta, Alabama; sister, Jan Dillard Maness, Alachua, Fla.; grandchildren, James Miles Dillard IV, Joshua Sterrett Dillard, Alyssa Marie Dillard, Madison Jane Dillard, Harold Miles Duke and Katelyn Ann Duke. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Mildred Elizabeth Blount.

A funeral will be held at graveside Saturday, Feb. 8 at 1 p.m. in Dillard Family Cemetery with Dr. James Dyar officiating.

Mrs. Lucia Robinson Cates Green
Mrs. Lucia Robinson Cates Green, 95, of W. Washington St., Newnan, Ga., died Wednesday, February 5, 2003 at Southland Nursing Home in Peachtree City, Ga.

She was a member of Central Baptist Church of Newnan and was a retired educator.

She was the daughter of the late John Robinson Cates and Eva Arnold Cates.

She was predeceased by her husband, Walter M. Green, and her brother, Dr. John R. Cates Jr.

Surviving are son, John L. Green and his wife, Susan, of Newnan; grandsons, J. Leighton Green and wife, Jill, and Matthew H. Green; great-grandchildren, Kaitlin, Madeleine and Haleigh Green of Newnan; sister, Laura Cates Inzer of Washington, D. C.; several nephews and a niece.

Mrs. Green graduated with a Bachelor degree from Shorter College and with her Master of Library Science from Emory University.

Before working in education, Mrs. Green worked for Pan Am Airlines and traveled aboard the Yankee Clipper. She was on the national television show "This is Your Life" honoring her father, John R. Cates, long-time Newnan druggist.

The family was receiving friends at McKoon Funeral Home in Newnan from 7-9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7.

A funeral will be at McKoon Funeral Home chapel 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8. Dr. Joel Richardson will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Carolyn (Price) Gilbreth, 74, of Peachtree City, Ga., died Sunday, February 2, 2003 at her residence.

She was born September 4, 1928 in Ben Hill, Georgia.

Surviving are two sons, Steven Vesser of Newnan, Ga. and Kent Vesser of Roanoke, Va.; two sisters, Ann Tenney and Jane Lumpkin, both of Dallas, Texas; two brothers, Kent Price of Maryville, Tenn. and David Price of Tennessee; four grandchildren.

The family was receiving friends Thursday, Feb. 6 from 5-8 p.m.

A funeral will be Friday, Feb. 7, at 11 a.m. at McKoon Funeral Home in Newnan. Burial will be in Emerald Hills Memorial Gardens in Snellville, Ga.

Surviving are son, John Green and his wife, Susan, of Newnan; grandchildren, Leighton and Matthew Green; great-grandchildren, Kaitlin, Madeleine and Haleigh Green; sister, Laura Cates Inzer of Washington, D. C.

Mr. Vance Stapler, 84, of Grantville, Ga., died Thursday, February 6, 2003 at Newnan Hospital West in Newnan, Ga.

Surviving are his wife Clara Holcombe Stapler; two daughters, Janice Sibley of Moreland, Ga. and Virginia Flud of Woodstock, Ga.; three sons, Clifford Stapler of Fayeteville, Ga., Dennis Stapler of Newell, W. Va., and Charles Stapler of Newnan, Ga.; four sisters, Adell Burnham of Newnan, Ga., Lucille Robinson of Carrollton, Ga., Wynella Meadows of Newnan, Ga. and Louise Pannell of Newnan; grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home 6-8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8.

A funeral will be at Macedonia Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9. Rev. Searcy Jackson and Rev. John Riley will officiate. Burial will be in Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Myrtis Forsyth Dean
Mrs. Myrtis Forsyth Dean, 87, of Landmark Drive, Douglasville, Ga. died Wednesday, February 5, 2003 at her residence.

She was born April 27, 1915 in Paulding County, Georgia, daughter of the late Walter and Shellie Smith Forsyth. She lived in Paulding County most of her life before moving to Douglas County. She was a member of County Line Baptist Church in Lithia Springs.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Bolton Dean; and a brother, Frank Forsyth.

Surviving are daughters and sons-in-law, Pam and Larry Garrett of Newnan and Charmaine and Sam Marlow of Douglasville; six grandchildren, Greg and Deana Truitt of Douglasville, Bob and Shellie Johnston of Acworth, James and Kristen Pruitt of Chicago, IL, Mike and Stefanie Nelson of Douglasville, Casey Marlow of Douglasville, and Dale and Natalie Bentley of Douglasville; 11 great-grandchildren; special niece and nephew, Henry and Eugenia Powell of Dallas; several other nieces and nephews and a host of friends and relatives.

A funeral was Friday, Feb. 7 at 11 a.m. at the Douglas Chapel of Jones-Wynn Funeral Home with Pastor David McLendon and Pastor Mike Powell officiating. Burial will be in County Line Baptist Church cemetery with grandsons serving as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends at Jones-Wynn Funeral Home, Douglas Chapel, Thursday, Feb. 6 from 1-8 p.m.

Mrs. Cherry Harmon, 51, of Franklin, Ga. died Sunday, February 2, 2003 at her residence.

She was born in Coweta County May 1, 1951 and was employed at Wal-Mart. She is the daughter of William "Bill" Jackson, and was preceded in death by her mother, Lavelle Morris Jackson.

A funeral will be at McKoon Funeral Home chapel 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 8. The Rev. Johnny Hobbs will officiate.

Surviving are three daughters, Samantha Harmon of Newnan, Lana R. Blount of Michigan, and Pamela Ray Durham of Michigan; her father, William "Bill" Jackson; two sisters, Jill Sherman of Palmetto and Jane Ray of Newnan; 11 grandchildren.

The family is requesting that flowers be omitted.

Ms. Annie Christine Harper died Monday, February 3, 2003 at her residence.

A funeral will be Friday, Feb. 7 at 2 p.m. at Greater Mount Zion A.M.E. Church on Richard Allen Drive, Newnan, with Rev. A. J. Childs, pastor, officiating, assisted by Evangelist Inez Moreland and Pastor Tilden Colton.

Burial will be in the Eastview Cemetery.

The remains will lie in state at the church from 12:30 p.m. until the hour of the service. Honorary pallbearers will be grandsons, and flower bearers will be granddaughters.

The family will assemble on the day of the service at 1 p.m.

Ms. Harper was born Dec. 11, 1926 in Atlanta, Ga. She later moved to Newnan, Ga. "Mamma Annie" was the ninth child born to Mrs. Ophelia and James Harper. She was preceded in death by a son, Frank Harper Sr., and one grandson, James Harper.

She was a member of the Greater Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church where she served as an usher, a member of the gospel choir, and member of the pulpit committee that purchased the furniture that is still used today. She will be remembered for her feistiness, her determination to get things done, and for saying what was on her mind.

Surviving are daughter, Mrs. Marion H. George (Odelle) of Columbia, S.C.; son, Willie Joe Harper of College Park, Ga.; special granddaughter, Tinie Burks of Newnan; eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; a host of friends including the Senior Citizens Center of Newnan and friends of Binion Court.

Mr. Grady McGahee, 88, of Haralson, Ga., died Thursday, February 4, 2003 at New London Health Center in Snellville, Ga.

He was born April 5, 1914 in Coweta County. He was a member of Haralson Baptist Church.

Surviving are daughter, Lila and husband Terry Wayne Adair of Snellville, Ga.; sister, Ruth Raines of Haralson, Ga.

Mrs. Mattie Ruth Boyd Allen, 75, of Jonesboro, Ga., died Feb. 3, 2003 at Henry General Hospital.

Mrs. Allen was born November 5, 1927 in Carroll County, Ga. to Frank and Mary Ellen (Hicks) Boyd. She was a homemaker.

A funeral will be at Higgins Hillcrest Chapel Wednesday, Feb. 5 at 1 p.m. Burial will be in Sherwood Memorial Park. Rev. Stacey Wheaton will officiate. Pallbearers will be Johnny White, Chuck Tommy, Wayne Allen, Bobby Allen, Toby Allen and Kenney Ackrey.
