Mrs. Nell Carolyn McMillan
Mrs. Nell Carolyn McMillan, 89, died June 19, 2003 at her residence in Newnan, Ga.

A retired artist, she was born June 1, 1914 in Forsyth County, Ga. to William Deitz Sneed and Estelle Shackelford McMillan.

Known as "The Bookmark Lady" or "Mrs. Mac" she had quite a following in Newnan. Her artistic talents were evident all her life. Her first job as a young girl was creating commercial signs for her father's business. A few years later she married Ben H. McMillan and settled down to raise three boys. A passion for creating works of art and her love for cultivating plants continued to flourish. When she and her family moved to Key West, Florida, she became even more involved as a horticulturist. She enjoyed nurturing and creating botanical arrangements using rare tropical plants. An active member of the Key West Garden Club, she participated in numerous flower shows and won several ribbons for personal entries.

In the 1980s Mrs. McMillan became interested in the art of pressing flowers, and came up with her own technique for making special bookmarks. Placing ads in the Florida Gardener, in a short time she was receiving large orders -- as many as 100 from a single customer. For 10 years the business continued to grow until she decided the bookkeeping, tax reporting and sheer volume of requests became too overwhelming.

She wanted to continue making the bookmarks, but made the decision to give them away.

In 1995 her husband died and she moved to Newnan to live with her son and daughter-in-law, Ben C. and Barbara McMillan, keeping busy with her plants and crafts. On top of her work desk could be found an assortment of flowers used in the bookmarks -- such as hydrangeas, pansies, dogwood blossoms, primrose and saw grass blossoms which grew just outside her door. A scrapbook is filled with letters of appreciation from "every day" people from all walks of life. Mrs. McMillan was rarely out and about in Newnan without a handful of bookmarks, each one carefully placed inside letter-sized envelopes.

Surviving are three sons, Ben C. McMillan of Newnan, Patrick McMillan of Clearwater Beach, Fla., and Dan McMillan of Ozark, Ala.; and 9 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Lung Association. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Florida.
