Mrs. Helen Frances Screws
Mrs. Helen Frances Screws, 72, who resided at the Dogwood Nursing Home in Fairburn, Ga., died June 23, 2003.

She was born September 27, 1930 in Jackson, Alabama, to the late John W. Clark and Mary Lou Bailey Clark. She was a homemaker all her life.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence James Screws Sr.; son, Charles Lee Screws; and daughter, Patricia Ann Screws.

Surviving are sons, Clarence James Screws Jr., Billy Ray Screws of Heflin, Ala., and Wayne Eugene Screws and his wife Nancy, also of Heflin; daughters, Lois Ann Screws of Dallas, Mary Carey and her husband Leon of Fairburn, Sarah Worthy of Lithia Springs, Peggy Little and her husband Richard of McDonough, Rebecca Kirkham and her husband William of Dallas, 19 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

A funeral was held at graveside Wednesday, June 25, at 4 p.m. at the Holly Hill Memorial Park in Fairburn with Rev. Ray Butler officiating.

Mrs. Margaret Smoot
Mrs. Margaret Teal Smoot, 84, of Hogansville, Ga., died Wednesday, July 2, 2003 at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange, Ga.

A funeral will be 4 p.m. Thursday, July 3 in the chapel of the Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville. The Rev. Jimmy Pruitt will officiate, and burial will be in Myrtle Hill Cemetery in Hogansville.

Born April 17, 1919 in Heard County, Mrs. Smoot was the daughter of the late Pinkney and Carrie Walls Teal. She lived in Hogansville most of her life, was retired from Uniroyal Inc. and was the wife of the late Arthur Smoot. She was a member of St. James United Methodist Church in Hogansville, where she served as church pianist for many years, was a former Sunday School teacher, and was a member of the Carrie Teal Circle.

Surviving are two daughters and a son-in-law, Karen and Roger Parham of Hogansville and Sherry Edge of Morrow; son and daughter-in-law, Lanny and Sondra Medley of Florence, Ala.; sister, Eris Barrow of Hogansville; eight grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren.

Ms. Nancy J. Baker
Ms. Nancy J. Baker, 63, of Newnan Georgia, died Saturday June 28, 2003 at Newnan Hospital West.

She was born November 18, 1939 to the late William Miller Johnson and the late Lorene Chastain Johnson.

She is survived by a sister, Judy J. Cent; four children, Cynthia Sue (Shelnutt) Milam, William Thomas Baker (the husband of Barbara Baker), Loretta Ann Baker Cash, and Patricia Kay Baker; six grandchildren, Ronnie Lee Cash Sr., Michael Forrest Milam, Sarah Lorene Milam, William Lee Thomas Baker, Jennifer Marie Baker, and Billy Ray Baker; one great grandchild, Ronnie Lee Cash Jr. Also, ex-husband, Thomas A. Baker.

A funeral will be Wednesday July 2, at 1 p.m. at Bilbry Funeral Home, 76 E. Adams St., Crossville, TN, Cumberland County. Graveside services will be held at the Chastain Marsh family cemetery in Pleasant Hill, TN.

Mrs. Melson Ware Beavers
Mrs. Melson Ware Beavers, 81, died Saturday, June 28, 2003.

Mrs. Beavers was born Sept. 21, 1921, in Coweta County, to the late Melson and Carrie Thomas Ware. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Dorsey Beavers, Sr.

Mrs. Beavers graduated from Western High School and obtained a teaching degree from West Georgia College. She returned to Western School where she taught for 30 years. An award is given each year at Western School in her honor and is named the Melson Beavers Outstanding Teacher Award. In 1970, Mrs. Beavers was selected as the Coweta County Star Teacher.

A faithful member of First Baptist Church of Newnan, she was a member of the Genet Barron Sunday School Class. She taught Sunday school for over 40 years .

Some of her hobbies included quilting, gardening, and reading.

A funeral will be held Tuesday, July 1, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of McKoon Funeral Home. Dr. Gene Tyre will officiate, and burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

The family was receiving friends Monday evening, June 30, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Serving as pallbearers will be Joe Crain Sr., Ronald Musick, Allyn Bell, Jack Reeves, Charles Hunter and Stinson Hammond.

Surviving are her children, Hugh and Sara Beavers, Jimmy and Pam Beavers, and Carriane and Buddy Nix, all of Newnan; granddaughter Carrie Markham and her husband Matt of Macon, and brother and sister-in-law Lynn and Betsy Ware of Palmetto.

Mrs. Anne Owens Donehoo-Brooks of Williamson, Ga. died Thursday, June 26, 2003.

She was a member of the J. C. (Mr. Cottie) Owens and Ingram family of Newnan.

A graduate of Newnan High School with honors in 1948, she received a degree in art and home economics from Valdosta State University in 1952. She retired as an art education teacher in 1982 after 30 years of service.

She is survived by three nephews, Phil, Edward and Mac Donehoo; step-children, Bill Jr., Donald Brooks and Florence Anthony; many beloved cousins ; and two uncles, Glen C. Owens and James P. Owens.

Mrs. Johnnie Mae Dozier, 68, of King St. in Hogansville, Ga. died Wednesday, June 25, 2003.

A funeral will be Tuesday, July 1 at 1 p.m. at the St. Paul A.M.E. Church in Hogansville, Ga. Rev. J. C. Tate and Bishop J. H. Morton will officiate, and burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Alva P. Vasselin of Fayetteville, Ga., died June 29, 2003.

She was born August 10, 1911 in Middlesex County, Mass.

She is survived by sons Norman Vasselin of Mesa, AZ, Herbert Vasselin of Fayetteville; grandchildren, Sheryl Liptak of Fayetteville, Susan Dawson of Senoia, Scott Vasselin of Mesa, AZ; four great-grandchildren; brother, Hilmer Peterson, of Florida.

A memorial service will be Saturday, July 5 at Carmichael-Hemperly Chapel, 135 Senoia Road, Peachtree City at 4 p.m., Father David Epps officiating.

Mr. Eddie Britt
Mr. Eddie Britt, of 41 Melson St., died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2003, in Newnan Hospital West.

Mr. Britt was born March 1, 1951 to Mr. and Mrs. Freddie (Dora) Britt Sr. He joined Greater Mt. Zion A.M.E. church at an early age and served the church faithfully. A graduate from Central High School in 1969, he also attended West Georgia College. Britt was employed with The Bibb Company for 30 years and ACS for seven months. He was a devoted son.

Britt is preceded in death by his mother, Dora Britt, and two brothers, McKinley Sr. and Levi.

Funeral services for Mr. Britt will be held Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2003 at 1 p.m. at the Greater Mt. Zion A.M.E. church on Richard Allen Drive. The Rev. Jarvis Childs and evangelist Anita Hines will officiate, assisted by elder Greg Long, evangelist Pearl Moreland and minister Freddie Britt III.

The remains will be placed instate at 12 p.m. until the hour of the service. Internment will be in Eastview Cemetery on Milton Ave. Pallbearers and flower bearers will be the 1969 class of Central High School and co-workers.

The family will be receiving friends Monday, Sept. 1 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Sellers-Smith Funeral Home.

Survivors include father, Mr. Freddie Britt Sr.; two brothers, Freddie Jr. and Robert Britt; eight sisters, Miriam Cook, Connie Britt, Mr. and Mrs. Jack (Angela) Woods, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard (Patricia) Rowe, Mr. and Mrs. Durrell (Lesia) Leavall, Wanda Britt, Mary Britt and Mr. and Mrs. Lee (Anita) Hines; a host of nieces and nephews; aunts; and one uncle.

Mrs. Mary Ruth Carter, of Fairburn, Ga., died Friday, Aug. 29, 2003.

Mrs. Carter's family received friends Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Parrott Funeral Home in Fairburn.

Funeral services will be held today at 2 p.m. at the chapel of Parrott Funeral Home. The Rev. Daniel Overdorf will officiate.

Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Pat and Wayne Goddard, of Hampton, Ga., and Gail and Roy Sims, of Fayetteville; sons and daughters-in-law, Victor Carter of Newnan, and Vincent and Debbie Carter of Newnan; sisters, Martha Polk of Carrollton and Evelyn White of Dalton, Ga.; one brother, J.W. Borders of Newnan; and grandchildren, Dylan, Ashley Sims and Skye Carter.

Mrs. Bessie Faye McDaniel, 79, of Sharpsburg, died Aug. 29, 2003.

Mrs. McDaniel was formerly of Atlanta.

McDaniel's family received friends on Saturday, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Carl J. Mowell & Son Funeral Home in Peachtree City.

Funeral services will be held today at 3 p.m. at the chapel of Carl J. Mowell & Son Funeral Home. The Rev. Bill Priester will officiate. The remains will be carried to Lee Memorial Funeral Home in Verona, Miss.

Survivors include children, Faye and Harrison White of Sharpsburg, and Tommy and Sharon McDaniel of Newnan; four grandchildren, Kelly Collins of Fayetteville, Maureen McDaniel of Newnan, Sarah McDaniel of Newnan, and Michael White of Cumming, Ga.; sisters, Kathleen Kelly, JoNell Louckes and Lillian Buse, all of Tupelo, Miss.; and brothers, Harry Armstrong of Tupelo, Miss., and Bobby Armstrong of Panama City, Fla.

Mr. Willie Leon Blair
Mr. Willie Leon Blair, 76, of 114 Spence Street, died Friday, Aug. 29, 2003, at Tanner Medical Center.

Born Feb. 9, 1927 in Carroll County to the late Buna Blair and Daisy Rass Blair, Mr. Blair was a U.S. Army WWII veteran, a retired mechanic and was of the Baptist faith.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Pauline Stamps.

Survivors include three daughters, Peggy Haye, Bonnie Morris of Bremen and Pam Blair; two stepdaughters, Delores Lane of Cumming and Barbara Porter; two sons, Danny Blair and Roger Blair of Bremen; a step-son, Kenny Shannon; two sisters, Lucille Taylor of Villa Rica and Dean Borders; 13 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held today at 2 p.m. at Martin & Hightower Heritage Chapel in Carrollton, with Reverend Searcy Jackson officiating.

Pallbearers will be Brandon Blair, Jeffrey Morris, Rodney Morris, Jason Faulkner, Mike Lane and Woodie Daniel.

Interment will be in the Wesley Chapel Cemetery with the American Legion Post #143 making the flag presentation.

Mr. Earl R. Day Jr.
Mr. Earl R. Day Jr., 71, of Greenville, Ga., died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2003, at his home.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, in the chapel of the Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville.

The Rev. Jim Hilderbrand will officiate, and burial will be in Myrtle Hill Cemetery in Hogansville.

Born Feb. 10, 1932, in Athens, Mr. Day was the son of the late Earl and Esther Strickland Day. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was a retired truck driver. Before making his home in Greenville 12 years ago, he was a resident of Fulton County.

Surviving are daughter, Debbie Day; sister, Jean Watts of Greenville; aunts, Margie Stokes of Stockbridge and Mildred Yenerall of Doraville; and grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mr. Jimmy Lee Elliott
Mr. Jimmy Lee Elliott, 66, of Douglasville, Ga., formerly of Newnan, Ga., died at Douglas General Hospital in Douglasville, Ga. Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2003.

Mr. Elliott was born in Atlanta, Ga. in 1937 to Frank and Cleo Elliott where he attended school and spent most of his life. A self-employed painter, Mr. Elliott worked throughout Georgia painting houses. Settling in Douglasville at his retirement, he loved hunting and spending time with his family. He will be remembered as a good-hearted humble man who loved work.

Mr. Elliott is survived by two sons, James and David Elliott, and a daughter, Sandra Elliott, all of Newnan; brother, Paul Elliott of Douglasville; several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service is 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30 at Jones Funeral Home in Newnan with Rev. Thomas Shannon officiating.

Mr. Archie T. Jackson
Mr. Archie T. Jackson, 83, of 160 Old Muse Road, Carrollton, died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2003, at Tanner Medical Center.

He was born June 20, 1920 in Carroll County to the late Daniel Andrew Jackson and Lola Belle Wright Jackson.

Mr. Jackson was a U.S. Army WWII veteran, a retired farmer, had served as a Carroll County Deputy Sheriff during W.J. Robison's term from 1972 through 1976, and was a member of the Abilene Baptist Church where he had served on the Deacon Board.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Willie Maude McClung Jackson, and a brother, Nathaniel Jackson.

Survivors include his wife, Edna Rooks Jackson; two daughters and a son-in-law, Theresa J. and Larry Strickland, and Glenda J. Hicks, all of Carrollton; four sisters, Peggy Leopard of Bremen, Videria Gray of Carrollton, Ivee McGukin of Bremen and Marie Ragsdale of Carrollton; three brothers, Stewart Jackson and D.A. Jackson, both of Carrollton and Rev. Searcy Jackson of Newnan; four grandchildren, Lori Brown of Carrollton, Jamie Elsberry of Bremen, Ashley Strickland of Silver Springs, MD, and Drew Strickland of Carrollton; and four great grandchildren, Aidan Hicks, Noah Brown, Rachel Brown, and Sydney Elsberry.

A funeral service will be held Sunday, Aug. 31, 2003, at 3 p.m. from the Abilene Baptist church with Rev. H.T. Henderson, Rev. Searcy Jackson and Rev. David Honeycutt officiating.

Music will be rendered by the Abilene Baptist Church Choir under the direction of David Caldwell.

Pallbearers will be Joe Kierbow, J.N. Baxter, Robert Redding, Larry Jennings, Kenneth Shadrix, Danny Camp, C.W. Redding, W.J. Robison, Chris Argo and Trenace Wright.

Interment will follow in the church cemetery with the American Legion Post #143 making the flag presentation.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Mr. Justin Jordan
Justin Douglas Jordan, 19, of Newnan, Ga., died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2003, as the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Justin was born in Tucker, Ga. May 24, 1984. He was a 2002 graduate of Northgate High School in Coweta County and was a current student at the State University of West Georgia in Carrollton, majoring in education and sports management. Justin was best known for his tremendous wrestling skills. Among the titles he held are: 2002 AA State Champion, 2001 and 2002 County Champion, a member of the 2002 Duel Team State Champions for Northgate High School, and first recipient of the Coweta County Cobra Award.

In addition, he was a member of the Team Georgia and Team Georgia National Duel Team. He was a certified wrestling referee and was recently appointed as an assistant coach for the Central High School of Carrollton.

Surviving are his parents, Doug and Chris Jordan of Newnan; brother, Brandon Jordan; grandparents, Nancy Griffin, Eric Daenecke, Jeanne Jordan and Elvert Jordan; several uncles, aunts and cousins; as well as many friends.

A funeral will be Saturday morning, Aug. 30, at 11 a.m. at Higgins Hillcrest Chapel in Newnan.

The family will receive friends Friday evening, Aug. 29 at their residence, 16 Enclave Lane in Newnan, from 6-8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Northgate High School Wrestling Team in honor and memory of Justin Jordan, 3220 Fisher Road, Newnan, Ga.

Mrs. Jane C. Miller
Mrs. Jane Carmichael Miller, 81, of Atlanta, died Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2003 at Hospice Atlanta.

Mrs. Miller was born April 2, 1922 in Atlanta, daughter of the late William Malinous Carmichael and Florence Sabina O'Callaghan Carmichael. She was the granddaughter of Cowetans, Robert Nathan and Marguerite Jane McElroy Carmichael, and a descendant of early Coweta settlers Drury Banks and Arthur Carmichael.

Mrs. Miller attended Washington Seminary in Atlanta and National Park College in Washington, D.C. She was a longtime member of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Atlanta and a member of the Huguenot Society and the Gardners Garden Club.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia S. Carmichael, and a brother, William Malinous Carmichael Jr.

A funeral service was held Saturday, Aug. 23 at the Spring Hill Chapel of H. M. Patterson and Son Funeral Home in Atlanta with Dr. William M. Schotanus officiating. Interment followed Westview Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, John A. Miller; sister, Martha Carmichael Dew; daughter and son-in-law, Sabina O'Callaghan Miller Gilbert and Murphy Pearce Gilbert; sons and daughters-in-law, John Alexander Miller Jr. and Remmie Miller, William Carmichael Miller and Elizabeth Wallace Miller; and grandchildren, Myers Guerry Miller, Virginia Jane Miller, Elizabeth Slaton Miller, William Carmichael Miller Jr., Jane Alexander Gilbert and Murphy Pearce Gilbert Jr.
