Mr. William C. Lay Sr.
William C. Lay Sr., age 84, of Newnan, Ga., died Friday, Feb. 6, 2004, at Decedent's Residence in Newnan, Ga. He was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He is survived by his wife Madge Lay of Newnan; two daughters Shelba Lay Stark and Lisa Lay Dunn both of Sharpsburg, Ga.; two sons William C. Lay Jr. of Fayetteville, Ga. and David C. Lay of Hollywood, Fla.; two sisters Vinada Brickey of Gate City, Va. and Joan Snapp of Kingsport, Tenn.; four brothers J.D. Lay and James Jay both of Kingsport, Tenn., Roy Lay of Gulf Breeze, Fla., and John Lay of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; twelve grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers are grandchildren Jeffrey Stark Jr., Jeremy Lay, Kevin Lay, Justin Dunn, Kyle Lay and Austin Dunn. Honorary pallbearers are the Deacons of Macedonia Baptist Church.

Arrangements are being handled by McKoon Funeral Home, 38 Jackson Street, Newnan, Ga., where the family received friends from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004 and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, Feb 8, 2004. Funeral service will be at Macedonia Baptist Church at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 9, 2004. Mr. Lay will lie in state from 10:30 till the service hour at the church. Rev. John Riley, Rev. Harold Taylor, Rev. Searcy Jackson and Rev. William Priester officiating. Interment will be at Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery in Newnan, Ga. Contributions can be made to Macedonia Baptist Church Building Fund of West Georgia Hospice.

Mr. Stephen Embry Baldwin
Mr. Stephen Embry Baldwin, 42, of Newnan, died at his home Friday morning, Feb. 6, 2004.

Mr. Baldwin was born in New Orleans in 1961. Later, he and his family moved to Athens, Ga., where he graduated from Clarke Central High with the class of 1979.

After high school, he enlisted with the U.S. Air Force, and then he received his commission through an inter-service transfer to attend the U.S. Army Aviation Training Program. He served our nation flying in combat as a blackhawk helicopter pilot in areas such as Somalia, Kosovo, Bosnia and the Persian Gulf. He was a Chief Warrant Officer upon his retirement from the armed forces.

Among his many awards, he received two Meritorious Service Medals, a Joint Service Commendation Medal, three Army Achievement Medals, the Joint Service Meritorious Medal, and two Armed Forces Expeditiary Medals.

He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, son, brother, and uncle who loved serving his country, and he was an animal lover.

Survivors include his wife, Simone W. Baldwin of Newnan; three daughters, Mercedes, Marlies and Sarah India Baldwin of Newnan; his father, Eugene F. Baldwin; his wife, Martha, of Athens; his mother, June Turnell and her husband, Joe, of Athens; three sisters, Andrea Ridgely and her husband, Randolph, of Athens, Suzanne Watt of Lawrenceville, and Beth Turnell of Athens; a niece, Avery Watt; a nephew, Phillip Hamilton; and many friends.

A private memorial service will be held at Jones Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Thom Shores officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Newnan Coweta Humane Society at 231 Cabin Rd., Newnan, Ga. 30263, or the the Chapelwood UMC stained glass window fund at 100 Janice Dr., Athens, Ga. 30606.

Mr. Byron H. Hinesley
Mr. Byron H. Hinesley, 50, died Friday, Feb. 6, 2004, at his residence.

Mr. Hinesley was born Aug. 23, 1953, in Newnan to the late Bill and Velma Hinesley, who preceded him in death in 2000. He was employed by Newnan Utilities as the control room supervisor and was a charter member of SonRise Baptist Church, where he was actively involved in the audio-visual productions.

Funeral services for Hinesley will be at SonRise Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 9. The Rev. Don Helms, Rev. Paul Dennis and Rev. Matthew Hinesley will officiate, and internment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery. The family received friends at McKoon Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday night and will receive friends again today, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made in Hinesley's memorial to the Audio-Visual Committee of SonRise Baptist Church, 6 Shenandoah Blvd., Newnan, Ga. 30265.

Survivors include wife Carol Ann Forbis Hinesley and sons, Rev. Matthew Hinesley and his wife Carrie, and Andrew Hinesley and his fiance Andrea Stewart.

Mr. Michael Todd (Mike) Hanson
Mr. Michael Todd (Mike) Hanson of Peachtree City, Ga., died Feb. 4, 2004.

Mr. Hanson was born in Atlanta August 12, 1966. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. James S. Hanson and Mrs. Kathryn Dupree Hanson. He was a 1984 graduate of Campbell High School in Fairburn where he was involved in and loved many of the sports programs. He served in the United States Army and was employed by Dean Electric Company in Fairburn at the time of his death. Mike continued his love for sports after high school by being involved in the youth sports program in Fayette County. He was a coach at many different age groups for the Fayette County Blue Devils as well as serving on their board of directors. He served as a great influence in the lives of many youth in the Fayette County area.

He is survived by his wife, Stephanie Bowers Hanson, and his children, David Michael Hanson and Kelsey Erin Hanson, all of Peachtree City. Brothers, James Austin Hanson and his wife, Tammy, and Joel Randy Hanson and his wife, Bridget. Sisters, Judy Hanson, Joyce Herring and her husband, Gary, Jan Harris and her husband Bill.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday at the Carmichael-Hemperly Funeral Home at 3 p.m. Visitation will be Friday from 5-9 pm., also at Carmichael-Hemperly at 135 Senoia Rd., Peachtree City. Higgins Hillcrest Chapel, Newnan, is in charge of arrangements. 770-253-4723.

Mr. Ralph D. Rainwater Sr.
Ralph D. Rainwater Sr., 69, a retired Master Sergeant from the United States Air Force, passed away on Feb. 5, 2004 following a courageous battle with lung cancer.

He was born May 1, 1934 in Smyrna, Ga., to the late Ethan and Ethyl Rainwater. In 1954, he joined the U.S. Air Force. Sergeant Rainwater was a veteran of the Vietnam War, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the volatile early days of the Cold War with the Soviet Union. During his career in the Air Force, he was stationed around the world, including Thailand, Iceland, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Libya. Sergeant Rainwater also served at numerous bases in the U.S., including Luke AFB in Arizona, Shaw AFB in S. Carolina, Castle AFB in California, and Minot AFB in N. Dakota. Sergeant Rainwater retired highly decorated and at one of the highest enlisted ranks achievable in the Air Force.

In 1957, he married Darlene Massey, and the two remained married until her passing in September 1989. In 1990, he remarried to Margaret Harper and the two remained married until Sergeant Rainwater's passing.

After retiring from the Air Force, Rainwater held positions with Foster Farms and Zacky Farms in California before returning to Georgia in 1982. Rainwater settled in Newnan, Ga., where he worked for several years at the William L Bonnell Company before retiring at age 65. After his second retirement, Rainwater, along with his wife Margaret, was an avid bowler. He bowled in several leagues, and he enjoyed the friendships he made while bowling.

Sergeant Rainwater is survived by his wife, Margaret; his children, Ralph Rainwater Jr. of Marietta, Jodi Moon of Bremen, Christopher Rainwater of Blakely, Alex Rainwater of Carrollton, and Matthew Rainwater of El Cajon, California, Jason Harper of Newnan and Justin Harper of Newnan. He is survived by grandchildren, Joseph, Chris, Yvonne, Adri, Quentin, Kayla, Rachel and Nicholas. Rainwater is also survived by one brother, other relatives and many, many friends. In addition to his parents and his first wife, he was preceded in death by numerous brothers and sisters, and one grandson, Aaron.

Funeral services for MSgt Ralph D. Rainwater Sr. will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, at McKoon Funeral Home, 38 Jackson St., Newnan, Ga. A full Air Force Honor Guard, including an Air Force chaplain, will attend. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Memorial Park on Roscoe Road in Newnan. Relatives and friends are welcome at the McKoon Funeral Home on Friday from 6-8 p.m. and at the funeral home on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the hour of the service.

Mr. Darius J. Mikulskis
Mr. Darius J. Mikulskis of Tyrone, Ga., died Feb. 2, 2004. He was an avid outdoorsman, writer, inventor and member of MENSA. Darius was also an active member of the Republican Party.

Survived by his wife of 21 years, Debi Mikulskis; children, Anthony Mikulskis of Tyrone, Matt Mikulskis of Tyrone; parents, Al and Garazina Mikulskis of Sharpsburg; brother, Marius Mikulskis of Sharpsburg; sister, Rasa Starkey of Houston, TX.

Funeral mass will be Friday, Feb. 6 at 11 a.m. at St. George Catholic Church with Father Dan Fleming officiating. Interment Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Mrs. Nellie Jo Williams
Mrs. Nellie Jo Williams, 71, of West Highway 5, Bowdon, Ga., passed away Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004 at Piedmont Hospital. She was born in Heard County, Ga., Oct. 17, 1933, daughter of the late Charles Alexander and Annie Mae Robinson Brown. She retired from Bremen Bowdon Inv. Co., was a member of Liberty Congregational Methodist Church and a life-long resident of the area.

Survivors include her husband, George "Sanford" Williams; four sons and daughters-in-law, Sammy Williams, Bowdon, Ga., Joey Williams, Bowdon, Ga., Mike an Nesy Williams, Franklin, Ga., Jerry and Nelbra Williams, Bowdon, Ga.; daughter and son-in-law, Sheila and Victor Coker, Franklin, Ga.; 10 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; brother, C. A. Brown of Florida.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, Feb. 5 at 2 p.m. from the Rainwater Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Harvey Fuller, Rev. Joey Dedmon and Rev. David Ables officiating. Interment will be in Liberty Congregational Methodist Church cemetery. Music will be furnished by Heather Williams. Pallbearers will be Corey Coker, Greg Coker, Shane Williams, Steve Williams and Mark Tuggle.

Rainwater Funeral Home, Bowdon, Ga., is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday, Feb. 4 from 6-9 p.m.

Infant Skyelar Nicole Fraser died Jan. 30, 2004 at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta, Ga.

Survivors include parents, David and Jae (Pirosch) Fraser of Newnan; brothers, Michael and Steven Colletta; sister, BrieAnna Colletta; grandparents, David and Darlene Fraser of Florida, Judith and John Kozyra of Newnan.

Mr. Joseph Brown, 71, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at Newnan Hospital.

He was born Feb. 23, 1932, in Carroll County, to the late Seals and Fannie (Moore) Brown. He was a retired carpenter with Brown Brothers Construction and was of the Baptist faith.

Mr. Brown was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Ann Robison Brown, who died in 1997.

Funeral services will be Monday, Feb. 2 at 11 a.m. at McKoon Funeral Home. Rev. Gary Parrish and Rev. Don Helms will officiate, and internment will be held at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Survivors of Mr. Brown include children, Angie Hesketh, Charles Brown and wife Pam, and Tony Brown and wife Sally; five sisters, Annie Lizzie Cosby, Blanche Haines, Clovis Pope, Martha Sue Ashley and husband Robert of Brooks, Ga. and Pauline Harrison; one brother, Robert Brown and wife Marion; one sister-in-law, Irene Brown; and grandchildren, Stephanie Brown Hatton and husband Michael of Alpharetta, Andy Brown of Dahlonega and Avery Brown.

Mrs. Lylyan Estelle Messer
Mrs. Lylyan Estelle Messer, 94, died Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, at Tanner Medical Center in Carrollton.

Mrs. Messer was born in Lee County, Ala. to the late James Boatright and Julia McLain Boatright. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Feb. 2, at 1 p.m. at the Higgins Hillcrest Chapel. Rev. Wayne Webb will officiate, and internment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery. Family will receive friends on Sunday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Survivors of Mrs. Messer include son and daughter-in-law, Edwin and Paulette Messer of Jacksonville, Fla.; one daughter, Cherie Kinder of Mitchell, Ind.; one sister, Opal Webster of Florida; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mrs. Linda Ann Griffith
Mrs. Linda Ann Griffith, 46, of Newnan, Ga., died Saturday, March 27, 2004. She was born in Fulton County, Ga., on July 10, 1957 to the late W. F. Whitton Jr. and the late Rosa Lee Overton. She was a beautician at Clippers Salon in Newnan for many years.

The funeral is Thursday, April 1, 2004 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of McKoon Funeral Home with Dr. Joel Richardson officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Newnan. The family will receive friends Wednesday, March 31, 2004 at McKoon Funeral Home between 5 and 8 p.m..

Mr. Doyal C. Hopkins
Mr. Doyal C. Hopkins, 72, of Newnan, Ga., died Monday, March 29, 2004, at Christian Ministries Hospice in Riverdale, Ga. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He was a member of the Newnan Shrine Club and was a member of Northside Baptist Church. He was a member of Tucker Lodge #42 for 50 y ears and also a member of the Eastern Star.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Jo Hopkins of Newnan, Ga.; daughter, Tammy Goodman of Newnan; son, Steve Hopkins of Tucker, Ga.; two sisters, Jeannette H. Livingston of Tucker, Ga. and Mildred Mainor of Tucker, Ga.; brother, Dean Hopkins of Tucker, Ga.; grandchildren, Taylor Hopkins, Laurel Hopkins and Jacob Goodman. Pallbearers will be nephews and honorary pallbearers will be Bill Sexton, David Mainor and Dan Doster.

Arrangements are being handled by McKoon Funeral Home, 38 Jackson St., Newnan, Ga. where the family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, March 30. Funeral service will be at McKoon Funeral Home at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 31, Rev. Andy Buchanan officiating. Intement will be at Floral Hills Memory Gardens in Tucker, Ga. Mrs. Helen Evans Baggett
Mrs. Helen Evans Baggett, 83, of Newnan, Ga., died Sunday, March 28, 2004.

She was born on July 1, 1920, in Coweta County to the late Alvin Russell Evans and Julia Haynie Evans. She was preceded in death by her husband Walter Alexander Baggett and her son Al Baggett. She was a longtime employee of Glover Insurance in Newnan.

The funeral is Tuesday, March 30, 2004 at 1 p.m. at the graveside in Southview Cemetery in Moreland. Rev. Winston Skinner will officiate.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Alex and Stacy Baggett of Newnan.

Mr. Bradley Wayne Thornhill
Mr. Bradley Wayne Thornhill, 21, of Baxter Road, Carrollton, Ga., passed away Saturday, March 27, 2004, in an Atlanta hospital from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

He was born May 27, 1982 n Tulsa, OK, to Teresa Jeanette Stubbs Fuller. He was employed by OFS of Carrollton.

Surviving are his mother and step-father, Teressa and John Fuller of Newnan; brothers, Kevin William Thornhill of Oxford, AL, and Cody Allen Sasser of Newnan; sister, Brittany Danielle Sasser of Newnan; maternal grandparents, Leonard and Clara Gaspard of Franklin; two aunts and an uncle.

Funeral services will be conducted at noon Wednesday, March 31, from Martin & Hightower Heritage Chapel. Interment will follow in the Whitesburg Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 3-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Larry W. Kelley, 51, of Newnan, Ga., died Saturday, March 27, 2004. He was born in Fitzgerald, Ga., on Aug. 23, 1952. He was preceded in death by his father William Johnson Kelley.

The funeral for Larry Kelley will be Tuesday, March 30, 2004 at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of McKoon Funeral Home with Rev. Patrick Gill officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Newnan. The family will receive friends Monday evening between 6 and 8 at McKoon Funeral Home.

Survivors include his wife Norma Kelley; son and daughter-in-law Todd and Sally Kelley; daughter and son-in-law Stacey and Steve Dunlap, all of Newnan; mother Geneva Kelley of Carnesville, Ga.; brother Dan Kelley of Carnesville, Ga.; and grandchildren Robby Dunlap and Tayler Dunlap.

Mrs. Jacqueline Levie, age 62, of Sharpsburg, Ga., died Tuesday, March 23, 2004, at Newnan Hospital in Newnan, Ga. She was born on March 15, 1942 in Akron, Ohio, the daughter of the late James Daley and Elizabeth Roxbury Levie.

She is survived by her husband Samuel B. Levie; daughter Melodie and her husband Chris Roberts of Spartanburg, S.C.; son Samuel Levie of Spartanburg, S.C.; brother James Daley of Wilbraham, Mass.; and four grandchildren.
