Mrs. Elizabeth Harrington
Mrs. Elizabeth Harrington, 83, died Thursday, June 3, 2004, at Beaulieu Convalescent Center, following a lengthy illness.

A native of Carroll County, Mrs. Harrington was born Feb. 3, 1921, to Andrew Jackson and Eunice Mae Cooke Melear. She was a hospital ward clerk prior to her retirement.

Mrs. Harrington was preceded in death by her husband Edward Harrington.

Funeral services will be today at 2 p.m. at the graveside at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be at McKoon Funeral Home from 12 p.m. until the funeral hour.

Survivors include sisters-in-law, Mrs. Avis Melear, Mrs. Martha Jean Melear, Mrs. Elizabeth Harrington and Mrs. Sara Harrington; an extended family of nieces and nephews; and the supportive and caring staff of Beaulieu Convalescent Center.

Mrs. Arletha Beasley Bennett
Funeral services for Mrs. Arletha Beasley Bennett of Newnan, Ga., will be held Saturday, June 5, 2004, 2 p.m. at St. John Baptist Church, Shenandoah. The remains placed in state at 12:30 p.m. Rev. J. W. Russell Jr. officiating, assisted by Rev. W. J. Johnson, Rev. Felton James, Rev. Connally, Rev. Larry Barner and Rev. Ronnie Johnson. Interment church cemetery. Pallbearers: grandsons.

Mrs. Arletha Bennett was born July 11, 1912, to the late Babe Beasley, and departed this life on June 1, 2004.

She was a faithful member of the St. John Baptist Church, where she worked with the Youth Department and formed a Youth Choir with Brenda Warner as the pianist. She served on the Mother Board faithfully and sang with The Caravan and The Old Ship. She served as president of the W. J. Clark Gospel Choir. She also served as the Kitchen Coordinator, and was faithful until her health began to fail.

She met and married the late Mr. Emmett Bennett Sr., and to this union fourteen children were born. Four preceded them in death. Also, seven brothers and sisters preceded her in death.

She leaves to cherish her memories her loving and devoted children, Mr. and Mrs. Avonne (Merrell Lee) Davenport, Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Mack (Daisyzel) Bennett, Ms. Annie Laura Ball, Mr. & Mrs. Eugene (Patricia) Williams, Ms. Costella Stevenson, Mr. Bobby Bennett, Mr. and Mrs. Emmett (Ella Kate) Bennett Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Millard (Tonya) Bennett, Mr. Donald Bennett & Ms. Debra Daniel; she raised, Nila Mae Dubose, Millernease Griffin and Mary Baker; a loving and devoted aunt, Flora Smith; sixty-six grandchildren; forty-eight great-grandchildren; fourteen great-great-grandchildren; neighbor and special friend, Ms. Leona Gates; special friends, Ms. Mamie Ross, Ms. Sue Lewis and The Dogwood Rehabilitation staff.

Dr. Paul M. Starnes
Dr. Paul Marion Starnes, 65, of Stone Mountain and Newnan, died Thursday, June 3, 2004, at his home in Newnan. Dr. Starnes was a fifth generation Georgian who grew up in Coweta County. He earned a B.S. degree from Florida State University, a Masters degree in College Teaching, and Ed.S. and Ph.D. in Educational Administration from the University of Florida. He conducted major university projects researching state financing of education.

Dr. Starnes was president of DeKalb Technical College of which tenure began in 1979. Prior to coming to DeKalb Tech, Dr. Starnes served 16 years in community college and university positions including: Associate Director for Educational Programs and Student Services for the Illinois State Community College Board, Assistant Professor of Educational Administration at the University of Florida, and department chairman and teacher in mathematics, computer science, electronics, and drafting. He also served for four and one-half years in the U.S. Air Force Strategic Air Command as an electronics technician and atlas missile systems analyst.

His professional activities included research as an assistant investigator on a project to develop and field-test a model for determining the cost of vocational education in U.S. secondary and post-secondary schools. Other activities included serving as a consultant on educational finance, serving as a member of regional accreditation visiting committees, and serving as chairman of state accreditation teams.

Over his career he has been associated with the American Technical Education Association, Association of Community College Trustees, Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, Conyers-Rockdale Chamber of Commerce, DeKalb Chamber of Commerce, Georgia Chamber of Commerce, Georgia Economic Developers Association, National Association of Industrial Technology, Newton County Chamber of Commerce, and Southern Association of Community, Junior, and Technology Colleges.

Community activities have included service on the Decatur Hospital Board of Trustees, and the Board of Directors, DeKalb Private Industry Council, Inc., Decatur, GA, the Workforce Investment Board, and a member of Stone Mountain Rotary Club.

Survivors include wife, Sally Starnes of Stone Mountain and Newnan; mother, Bessie Starnes of Newnan; two sons and their families, Jim and Teresa Starnes, of Ft. Wayne, IN. and grandchildren, Sarah and Jamey; Joel and Janel Starnes of Newnan, and grandchildren Rachel and Lauren Starnes; brother and sister-in-law, William and Carol Starnes, Newnan; sister and brother-in-law, Peggy and Billy Lee, Newnan; sister Rebecca Starnes, Newnan, and much extended family.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, June 6 at 6 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of Newnan. Family will be receiving friends in the fellowship hall following the service. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be sent to the DeKalb Technical College Foundation, 1085 Montreal Road, Clarkston, GA 30021.

Mrs. Barbara Lee Swanson
Mrs. Barbara Lee Swanson, 65, of Newnan, Ga., born Sept. 7, 1938 in Hennipen County, MN, died June 3, 2004. She was the daughter of Henry L. Bateman and the late Alberta Murray Bateman and was employed as a medical transcriber. She had a great zest for life,and was a true animal lover. She had a true faith in God and was well loved by her family, friends and community.

She is survived by two daughters, Annette Swanson of Newnan and Audrey Malin of Ringwood, NJ; two sons, Chris Swanson of Newnan and Perry Swanson Jr. of Macon, GA; father, Mr. Henry Bateman of Zellwood, FL; brother, Lee Bateman of Stoneybrook, NY; three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Perry Swanson Sr.; son, Eric Swanson; and mother, Alberta Murray Bateman.

Arrangements are being handled by McKoon Funeral Home, 38 Jackson Street, Newnan, Ga., where the family will receive friends Monday, June 7, from noon to 2 p.m. with the funeral immediately following at 2 p.m. in the McKoon Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Harry Parkerson officiating. Interment will be at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery on Roscoe Road in Newnan, Ga.

Mrs. Freeda Irene Bell Stover
Mrs. Freeda Irene Bell Stover, 94, of Newnan, Ga., passed away Wednesday, June 2, 2004 at her residence.

Mrs. Stover was born July 8, 1909, in Rockland Township, PA, daughter of the late Charles Edward Bell and the late Grace Moore Bell. She graduated from Franklin High in PA. She was also a graduate of Clarion State Teachers College and taught in the Venango County, PA school system. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl H. Stover and brothers, Carl and Eugene.

Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce and William Summers of Largo, FL and Patricia and Donald Henshaw of Newnan; sister, Claire Bell DeWoody of Seneca, PA; 4 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Mrs. Elizabeth Spain Boyd
Mrs. Elizabeth Spain Boyd, 61, of 35 Lassetter Road, Sharpsburg, Ga., died suddenly Monday, May 31, 2004, upon arrival at Newnan Hospital, Newnan, Ga.

She was born in Rome, Ga. Jan. 31, 1943, a daughter of Johnny R. Spain and Helen Baines Spain. Mrs. Boyd had been a resident of Sharpsburg for the past 10 years, moving from Columbus where she had made her home for 30 years. She lived her early childhood years in Rockmart, later moving to Marietta where she was a 1961 graduate of Sprayberry High School. Mrs. Boyd was a member of the Peachtree City Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her mother, Mrs. Helen Spain, Feb. 16, 2000.

Surviving are her husband, Mr. Harvey Boyd of Sharpsburg to whom she was married Sept. 4, 1964; one daughter, Mrs. Beverly Ann Boyd Loftin and her husband, Jim, of Midland, Ga.; son, Mr. Cameron L. Boyd, Sharpsburg; granddaughter, Sidney Alexis Loftin, Midland; father, Mr. Johnny Spain, Rockmart; sister, Mrs. Glenda Faye Walker, Dallas, TX; maternal grandmother, Mrs. Lucille Baines, Rockmart.

Funeral services will be Thursday, June 3, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Alvis Miller & Son Funeral Home, Rockmart, with Ministers Alvis Miller, Aubrey Johnson and Craig Hallman officiating. Interment will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers: Walter Baines, George Baines, Leonard Baines, Lee Baines, Michael Baines and Ross Baines.

Mr. Francis J. "Frank" Christy
Mr. Francis J. "Frank" Christy, 81, of Newnan, Ga., departed this world May 25, 2004.

Funeral services were held at Forest Hills Memorial Gardens, Forest Park, Georgia, on May 28, with Father Charles Donavan officiating. An honor guard was provided by members of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans. Mr. Christy was a veteran of World War II, having enlisted at the age of 20 years in the U.S. Army where he honorably served for three years. He was part of the large force that landed in Normandy on June 6 and 7 in 1944, serving in the campaigns of Northern France, the Rhineland and Central Europe. He never talked about his war time experiences to his family and friends, yet he was proud of his military service and proud to be an American. He is survived by two daughters, Ms. Jeanne Long, Mrs. Carol (Robert) Boggs; son, James (Mary) Christy; and eight grandchildren. His wife of 29 years, Paula S. Christy, preceded him in death.

Mr. Oren K. Hollyday
Mr. Oren K. Hollyday, 79, of Newnan, Ga., died June 1, 2004. He was born June 30, 1923, in Deposit, New York. Mr. Hollyday was a retired aircraft mechanic for Eastern Airlines and also an Army veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie Hollyday, and survived by brother Beardsly Hollyday of St. Michaels, Maryland.

Arrangements are being handled by McKoon Funeral Home, 38 Jackson St., Newnan, Ga., where the family will receive friends from 2-3:30 p.m. Thursday, June 3. The funeral will be 4 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church with Rev. Russell Kendrick officiating. Interment will be at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Newnan, Ga.

Mr. Johnny Frank Mapp
Mr. Johnny Frank Mapp, 72, of Franklin, Ga., died Tuesday, June 1, 2004 at Newnan Hospital. Mr. Mapp was born in Randolph County, Ala., in 1931 to John and Hattie Mae Mapp. During the Korean Conflict, Mr. Mapp served four years in the Navy aboard an aircraft carrier in the Sea of Japan. Afterwards, he moved to the Newnan area where he worked as a tool and die craftsman at the William L Bonnell Company for more than 33 years at his retirement. Mr. Mapp will be remembered as a kind person who loved fishing, water sports and the outdoors.

Mr. Mapp is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mrs. Faye Mapp of Franklin; two sons, Rickey Mapp Sr. and John Wayne Mapp, both of Franklin; four daughters, Sue Lenning of Newnan, Pat Turner of Corinth, Mary Ann Wade of Franklin and Elaine Mapp of Franklin; sister, Precilla Eubanks of Lanette, Ala.; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and many friends.

Mr. Mapp's family will receive visitors from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, June 3 at Jones Funeral Home, Newnan. At Mr. Mapp's request, there will be no formal funeral service.

Graveside service for Mr. Grover Reese will be held on Thursday, June 3, at noon at Ollie Branch Cemetery, 2 Highway 100, St. Marks Community, Hogansville, Ga. Rev. James Morton, pastor officiating. Visitation is Thursday, June 3, at Walker Temple CME Church in Greenville 9 to 11 a.m.

Surviving are his wife, Lois Reese, Greenville, Ga.; children, Dr. Kristi M. Reese of Tallahassee, Fla. and Dion Reese of Greenville, Ga.; three brothers, Mr. and Mrs. O. L. (Jenell) Reese, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew (Mary) Reese; and Mr. and Mrs. Willie G. (Charlie Mae) Reese, all of Greenville, Ga. Family will assemble at the church 11:15 a.m. Final arrangements entrusted to Sellers-Smith Funeral Home Inc., Newnan, Ga.

Mrs. Anne L. Brown, 71, of Newnan, Ga., died May 30, 2004 in LaGrange, Ga.

She was retired from the textile industry. Mrs. Brown is survived by her husband Aubrey Brown of Newnan; daughters, Rebecca Brown, Newnan, Patsy Agan, Rockmart, Ga., Joyce Minix, Tennessee, Amy Lynn Coalson, Newnan; sons, Tommy Brown of Huguely, Ala., Greg Brown of Newnan; eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers: Tommy Brown, Terry Brown, T. J. Agan, Chris Agan, Larry Coalson, Lenny Agan.

Mrs. Ann L. Brown, 71, of Newnan died Sunday, May 30, 2004 in LaGrange.

Mrs. Brown was retired from the textile industry.

The family will receive friends today, June 1, from 6-8 p.m. at McKoon Funeral Home. The funeral will be held Wednesday, June 2, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of McKoon Funeral Home with the Rev. Hubert Flournoy officiating.

Mr. Clay Spradlin
Mr. Clay Spradlin, 31, died Saturday, May 29, 2004 at Fayette Community Hospital in Fayetteville.

A native of Floyd County, he was born April 20, 1973 to William Henry and Delores Priest Spradlin. Mr. Spradlin was a truck driver for C&C Disposal.

He was a member of The Church of God of The Union Assembly. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Henry Spradlin and Clavin Priest; and by a sister-in-law, Nan Wallace.

The family received friends on May 31 at McKoon Funeral Home.

The funeral will be held today, June 1, at 2 p.m. at The Church of God of The Union Assembly on Highway 29 South. Jessie W. Hughes, Johnny Hughes and Jurandon Hughes will officiate.

Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

Mrs. Laura Sears Hines, 32, of Newnan, Ga., died Wednesday, July 28, 2004. She was born on Feb. 2, 1972 in Harrison County, Mississippi.

The memorial service is Sunday, Aug. 1 at 4 p.m. in the chapel of McKoon Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Patton officiating. The family will receive friends on Sunday 2-4 p.m. at McKoon Funeral Home.

She is survived by her husband, Phil Hines of Newnan; son, Scott Hines of Newnan; parents, Greg and Kaye Sears of Newnan; sister, Lisa Hines of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; and her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Steve & Evelyn Harris of Newnan.

Mrs. Cozine Davis McKneely
Mrs. Cozine Davis McKneely, 65, of Griffin, Ga., died Wednesday, July 28, 2004 at Decatur Hospital in Decatur, Ga.

She was born May 21, 1939 in Marshall County, Ala., to the late Rev. W. A. Davis and the late Mrs. Laura McClain Davis.

She is survived by her husband, Terrell McKneely of Griffin; daughters, Tina Scopano of Tampa, Fla., and Bonni Bryant of Griffin, Ga.; sisters, Hazel Chambers of Albertville, Al., Shelby Sticher of Newnan, Opal Baldwin of Vancouver, WA, and Margaret Helton of Mt. Aire, Ga.; brothers, W. J. Davis of Lilburn, Ga. and Sonny Davis of Newnan; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

The family was receiving friends Friday, July 30 from 6-8 p.m. at McKoon Funeral Home. The service will be held Saturday, July 31, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of McKoon Funeral Home, with the Rev. Udell Addison officiating.

In lieu of flowers the family has asked that contributions be made in memory of Cozine Davis McKneely to the American Lung Association, 2452 Spring Road, Smyrna, Ga. 30080.

Ms. Shirley Margaret Powell
Shirley Margaret Powell, 55, of Newnan, Ga., died Thursday, July 29, 2004 at Saint Joseph's Hospital in Atlanta after a brief illness. Ms. Powell was born in Heard County, Ga. to the late Jessie and Margaret Boyd on Nov. 20, 1948. She moved to Newnan in the late 70s with her 3 children and was a dedicated homemaker to her family all of her life. She will be remembered as a loving and caring mother, grandmother, and friend. Her love for music, the ocean, cooking and growing beautiful flowers will never be forgotten.

Ms. Powell is survived by her mother, Margaret Allison of Newnan, Ga.; two sons, Dean Powell and his wife Melissa of Newnan and Dale Powell and his companion Darlene of Newnan; a daughter, Maria Dawn Powell-Angulo and her husband Leonard of Newnan; brother, Jackie Boyd Sr. of Franklin; six grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and many friends.

Ms. Powell's family will receive visitors at Jones Funeral Home 3-6 p.m. Saturday, July 31. Her funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 1 in Jones Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor David Arrington officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Newnan, Ga.
