Darnell Cole

James Darnell Cole, 71, of 1915 Georgia Highway 34 in Franklin died Thursday at West Georgia Medical Center after a brief illness.
Hunter-Allen-Myhand Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Gwendolyn Humphries

Mrs. Gwendolyn K. Humphries, 83, of 4324 Greenville Road, Mountville, died Thursday at West Georgia Medical Center following a brief illness.
Mrs. Humphries, born September 21, 1914, in Mountville, was the daughter of the late Charles Wesley and Sara Ilean Thrash Kinard. A resident of Mountville most of her life, she was a former bookkeeper for Hav-A-Tampa and a member of Mountville United Methodist Church where she was a member of U.M.W. and served as church pianist for over 65 years.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Ernie Richards of LaGrange; a son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Kay Humphries of Mountville; and five grandchildren, Jenny Richards, Steven Richards, and Melissa Richards, all of LaGrange, and Betsy Humphries and Bonnie Humphries, both of Mountville.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Mountville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rick McMahan officiating. Burial will be in the Mountville Cemetery. The body will be at the church one hour prior to the service.
The family will be at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Kay Humphries, at 60 Thrash Road and will receive friends at Hunter-Allen-Myhand Funeral Home this evening from 6 until 8.
Flowers will be accepted or those desiring may contribute to Mountville United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall Building Fund in memory of Mrs. Humphries.

Marshall Ward Jr.

Ret. Chief M/Sgt. Marshall Ward Jr., 74, of 61 Hutchinson Road died Thursday at his residence after a lengthy illness.
Hunter-Allen-Myhand Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mark Jerome Phillips

Mark Jerome Phillips, formerly of LaGrange, died Wednesday in Brooklyn, N.Y.
The family will be at the home of his mother, Mrs. Mary Alice Gates Phillips, at 515 Glenn Robertson Drive.
Funeral arrangements will be announced later by Lakes-Dunson- Robertson Funeral Home.

Mrs. Willie Underwood

Mrs. Willie Prescott Underwood, 89, a former resident of 516 Lincoln St., died Thursday at Florence Hand Home after a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Underwood, born in Roanoke, Ala., on September 22, 1908, was the daughter of the late Charles S. and Nannie Harris Prescott. She had lived in LaGrange most of her life and was retired from Callaway Mills Company. She was a member of Southwest LaGrange Baptist Church and a former member of East Vernon Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Roger Underwood of Atlanta; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be Saturday at 4 p.m. in Shadowlawn Cemetery with the Rev. Jimmie L. Willis officiating.
The family will receive friends at Hunter-Allen-Myhand funeral Home Saturday afternoon from 2 until 4.
Flowers will be accepted, or those desiring may contribute to Southwest LaGrange Baptist Church or to the Parkinsons Disease Association in memory of Mrs. Underwood.

Robert Leon Lewis

Ret. S/Sgt. Robert Leon Lewis, 66, of 10 Robertson Street died this morning at Hospice LaGrange following a lengthy illness.
S/Sgt. Lewis served in U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Air Force.
Hunter-Allen-Myhand Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

James Darnell Cole

James Darnell Cole, 71, of 1915 Georgia Highway 34, Franklin, died Thursday at West Georgia Medical Center following a brief illness.
Mr. Cole, born October 17, 1926 in Troup County, had lived in Heard County for the past five years and was the son of the late Marvin C. and Lillie Mae Underwood Cole. Mr. Cole was retired from General Motors Lakewood Assembly Plant and had lived in Atlanta for 35 years. He was a member of Community Christian Church in Waresville, a member of Elm City Lodge #544, LaGrange Shrine Club and Weathers Honda Riders Club, U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Nell Cole of Franklin, three sons and daughters-in-law, Greg and Lori Cole of Ellenwood, Keith and Madolyn Cole of Loganville and Kent and Leslie Cole of Lawrenceville; three grandchildren, Bryan Cole, Kory Cole and Kally Cole; two step-grandsons, Joshua Kinney and Jeremiah Kinney; a half-brother, Wayne Cole and a half-sister, Linda White, both of Rome.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 4 p.m. in the Chapel of Hunter-Allen-Myhand Funeral Home with the Revs Bobby Robinson and Mike Bain officiating. Burial will be in Mount Zion United Methodist Church cemetery in Glenn.
The family will be at their home at 1915 Georgia Highway 34, Franklin, and will receive friends at the funeral home this evening from 6 until 8.

Marshall M. Ward Jr.

Retired Chief M/Sgt. Marshall M. Ward Jr., 74, of 61 Hutchinson Road died Thursday at his home following a lengthy illness.
Mr. Ward, born September 2, 1923, in Dalton, was the son of the late Marshall Marion Sr. and Mary Nell Miller Ward, and had lived in LaGrange for the past 21 years. He was a retired probation officer for State of Georgia after 12 years of service and a member of the First United Methodist Church. He retired from the U.S. Air Force after 30 years of service. During World War II, he was a prisoner of war for 18 months in Germany and received the Purple Heart and many other military awards and decorations.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Ray Ward of LaGrange; a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and John Drapp of Tampa, Fla.; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Alton and Barbara Ward and David Ward, all of Tampa, and Thomas Ward of LaGrange; five grandchildren, Nicole, Justin, Shane, Reid and Emily, all of Tampa; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Hunter-Allen-Myhand Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert J. Dodds officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va.
The family will be at their home at 61 Hutchinson Road and will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 6 until 8 p.m.
Flowers will be accepted or those desiring may contribute to Baddour Memorial Center for Handicapped, P.O. Box 69, Senatobia, Miss., 38668, or the American Cancer Society in memory of Mr. Ward.

Mrs. Nell Allen

Mrs. Nell (Maw Maw) Allen, 62, of 150 Turner St., died Friday at Crawford Long Hospital of Emory University in Atlanta.
Arrangements will be announced later by the Hunter-Allen-Myhand Funeral Home.

Mrs. Clara Rosser White

Funeral services for Mrs. Clara Rosser White will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Zion Hill Baptist Church at 114 Cox St. The Rev. William E. Harris will officiate with burial in Southview Cemetery.
Mrs. White, the widow of Willie Fred White, was the daughter of the late Will Rosser and Mrs. Julia Cameron Rosser. She was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors include a very devoted son, Johnny (Big Red) Rosser of LaGrange; devoted cousins, Mrs. Ann Gamble and family of Atlanta, Mrs. Martha Merideth and family of LaGrange, Mrs. Ruby Woodard and family of Atlanta, Mrs. Mary Edmondson and family of LaGrange, Marvin Wade and Charles Wade of LaGrange, Lawrence Williams and Morris Williams of Ypsilanti, Mich.; and several other cousins of LaGrange, Hogansville and Atlanta.
The family will be at the residence of her son at 213 Banks St.
Lakes-Dunson-Robertson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Robert Leon Lewis

Ret. S/Sgt Robert Leon Lewis, 66, of 10 Robertson St., died Friday at Hospice LaGrange after a lengthy illness.
S/Sgt. Lewis was born in Rock Stand, Ala., the son of Gussie Mae Lewis of LaGrange and the late Baxter Floyd Lewis. He lived here most of his life, was a former Marine and retired from the U.S. Air Force and the City of LaGrange.
In addition to his mother, survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Robert L. and Michelle Lewis of Loganville; a daughter, Christina E. Lewis of LaGrange; a brother, K. Lamar Lewis of Pensacola, Fla.; a sister, Shirley M. Moody of Tallahassee, Fla.; and one granddaughter, Kerianne Nicole Lewis of Loganville.
Funeral services will be Monday at 1 p.m. in the Hunter-Allen-Myhand Chapel with Dr. Ralph A. Taylor and Pastor Clayton Scott officiating. Burial will be in Shadowlawn Cemetery with military honors.
The family will be at the home of his mother, Mrs. Gussie Mae Lewis, at 1206 Murphy Avenue and will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday evening from 7 to 9.
Flowers will be accepted or those desiring may contribute to Hospice LaGrange in memory of S/Sgt. Lewis.

Arthur T. Woerthwein

Funeral services for Arthur T. Woerthwein of 320 Broad St., will be at cryptside at Shadowlawn Mausoleum this afternoon at 2. Dr. George R. Sinclair Jr. will officiate.
Striffler-Hamby-Mortuary, LaGrange Chapel, at 1010 Mooty Bridge Road is in charge of arrangements.

Lamar Estes

Funeral services for Lamar Estes, 82, of Hogansville will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of the Claude A. McKibben & Sons Funeral Home.
Dr. Jimmy Brown and the Rev. Powers Witcher will officiate with burial in the Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery in the Rocky Mount Community of Meriwether County.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 until 9 tonight.

Mrs. Gean Nixon Black

Mrs. Gean Nixon Black, 72, of 2791 Pierce Road in Gainesville died Monday at her home after several months of declining health.
Mrs. Black was born in Carroll County on October 15,1925, the daughter of the late Jake Richard and Katie Lou Jackson Nixon. She had lived in Gainesville since 1982 and was a former employee of Jonesboro Medical Center in Jonesboro. She was a member of Straight Way Baptist Church in Gainesville and a former member of the First Baptist Church of Conley.
Survivors include a sister, Lanell Kinsey of Gainesville; a brother, Wain R. Nixon of the Gabbettville Community; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Long Cane Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. The body will be at the church one hour prior to the service.
The family will be at the home of her brother and sister-in-law, Wain and Darlene Nixon, at 5674 West Point Road, and will receive friends at the funeral home this evening from 7 until 9.
Flowers will be accepted, or those desiring may contribute to the Long Cane Cemetery Fund in memory of Mrs. Black.

Mrs. Ruby Kate James

The funeral service for Mrs. Ruby Kate Stokes James will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Triumph Holiness Church on Brown Street. Bishop James Keith and Elder Larry White will officiate with burial in Southview Cemetery.
Mrs. James, a native of Troup County, was the daughter of the late George and Ora Burks Stokes and the wife of the late Charlie James. She was a homemaker and mother, and a member of Triumph Holiness Church.
Survivors include two devoted sisters, Mary G. Davenport and Lula B. Ward, both of LaGrange; a daughter, Roberta Kearney of Detroit, Mich.; nephews, Eugene Stokes and Bobby Stokes, both of LaGrange; niece, Katie Simmons of Atlanta; and other nephews, nieces and other relatives.
The family will be at the home of her sister, Mrs. Lula Bell Ward, at 409 1/2 Brown St.
A service by Mackey-Wilson-Jennings Funeral Home.
