Lidy Phillips

Lidy Orene Garrett Phillips, 79, of Danielsville, died Nov. 30, 2002, at Comer Health Care Center in Comer.
A native of Madison County, she was a daughter of the late William Thomas and Lena Pearl Parsons Garrett. She was a homemaker and member of Bethel M. Baptist Church. She was the last member of her immediate family and was preceded in death by two brothers, Ebb Garrett and Marshall Garrett; three sisters, Oddie Mae King, Bertie Lee Drake and Revonda Drake; and a grandson, Marcus Phillips.
Survivors include her husband, Doyle Thomas Phillips; a daughter, Patricia "Pat" Hill of Danielsville; a son, Donald T. Phillips of Danielsville; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday at Pruitt Funeral Home with the Revs. Robert Garrett and Jerome Howell officiating. Burial was in Danielsville Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were Jason Summers, Brett Summers, Bewis Summers, Glenn Howell, Joey Baskins, Seth Fields and Stanley James.
Pruitt Funeral Home in Royston was in charge of arrangements.

Rosie Guest

Rosie Etta Brown Guest, 67, of 1062 Clayborn Drive in Elberton died Nov. 24, 2002, at Elbert Memorial Hospital.
A native of Elbert County, she was a daughter of the late Horace and Bessie Brown. She was a retired seamstress in the textile industry. She was preceded in death by two sons, Jimmy Lee Guest and Dennis S. Guest.
Survivors include her husband, Andrew S. Guest of the home; five sons, James Randall Guest of Bowman, Kenneth Anthony Guest of Colbert, Steve E. Guest of Royston and William Bronson Guest and Andrew Vincent Guest, both of Elberton; a daughter, Mary Carolyn Vassey of Milledgeville; two brothers, Edward Brown of Bowman and Horace Brown Jr. of Hartwell; two sisters, Myrtle Phillips of Iva, S.C., and Elizabeth Collins of Danielsville; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Nov. 27 at the chapel of Hicks Funeral Home with the Rev. Louis Shaver officiating. Burial was in Doves Creek Baptist Church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Tommy Collins, Sam Brown, Mike Brown, Lamar Brown, Kendall Weaver and Greg Guest.
Hicks Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Deacon Cox

David Sylvester "Deacon" Cox, 84, of Calhoun Falls, S.C., died Nov. 26, 2002, at his home.
A native of Greenville, S.C., he was a son of the late Thomas Hugh Cox Sr. and Lila Jane Stone Cox. He was a retired maintenance supervisor with Burlington Industries. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Latham Cox; a son, Ronnie Cox of Calhoun Falls, S.C.; a daughter, Jean C. King of Elberton; a sister, Marilla C. Rush of Abbeville, S.C.; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Graveside funeral services were held Friday at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Abbeville, S.C., with the Rev. Virgil Manning officiating. Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of the Piedmont in Greenwood, S.C.
Calhoun Falls Funeral Home in Calhoun Falls, S.C., was in charge of arrangements.

Dallas Webb

Dallas J. Webb, 72, of 288 W. Tate St. in Elberton died Nov. 28, 2002, at Elbert Memorial Hospital.
A native of Elbert County, he was a son of the late Emil Webb and Janie Fortson Webb. He was a member of Calvary Presbyterian Church. He was retired from Harmony Blue Granite Company. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and a member of the Elberton post of Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty McGarity Webb; a son, Robert Cary "Bobby" Webb; and two brothers, Hugh Webb and Charles Webb.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce and Susan Webb of Bowman and Dennis and Jenny Webb of Arabi; a daughter-in-law, Wanda Webb of Bowman; a brother, Lewis J. Webb of Elberton; and six grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday at the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Lowe officiating. Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery in Bowman. Memorials may be made to Calvary Presbyterian Church.
Pallbearers were Mike Webb, Alan McGarity, Andy Evanson, Doug Anderson, Michael McGarity and Tammy McGarity.

Nona Richardson

Nona Richardson, 86, of Iva, S.C., died Nov. 28, 2002, at Willow Creek Nursing Center.
A native and former resident of Elbert County, she was a daughter of the late William Ira and Julia Ward Thomason. She was retired from Hartwell Garment Company and was a member of Rock Branch Baptist Church and the Friendship Sunday School Class. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Tom Richardson; a daughter, Betty Craft; three brothers, Elmer Thomason, Henry Thomason and Joe Thomason; and a sister, Ruth Townes.
Survivors include two sons, Bobby J. Richardson of Piedmont, S.C., and Billy C. Richardson of Iva, S.C.; a daughter, Martha Brown of Anderson, S.C.; a brother, Homer Thomason of Elberton; two sisters, Pearl Townes of Iva, S.C., and Jeannie Woods of Mableton; 10 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday at Rock Branch Baptist Church with the Rev. Ed Sayer officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to Rock Branch Baptist Church, 2150 Coldwater Road, Elberton, GA 30635 or to Hospice of the Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29621.
Hicks Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Dr. Horace Tate

Dr. Horace E. Tate died Nov. 29, in Atlanta.
A native of Elberton, he was known as a distinguished educator and a leader in human and civil rights. He served as a senator in the Georgia General Assembly for many years where he introduced and effected many bills on human rights and civil rights. He was a former executive director of the Georgia Teacher and Educators' Association and the Georgia Association of Educators. He was the first African-American to run for the office of mayor for the City of Atlanta.
Memorial services will be held at noon Thursday at Cascade Methodist Church in Atlanta.

David Brown

David Joel Brown, 65, of 133 Clairmont Avenue in Elberton died Nov. 26, 2002, at Athens Regional Medical Center in Athens.
A native of Elbert County, he was a son of the late David H. Brown and Mamie L. Saxon Brown. He was a member of Francis Asbury United Methodist Church in Elberton. He was a stonecutter for the granite industry and a member of the Elbert County Saddle Club.
Survivors include his wife, Pauline Moon Brown; a daughter, Diane Drennon of Anderson, S.C.; a brother, Charles Brown of Greenwood, S.C.; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday at the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral Home with the Rev. Jim Spooner officiating. Burial was in Elmhurst Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Jeff Boswell, Randall Haynes, Barry Moon, Russell Mullenix, Bryan Holder and Byron Stovall.
Berry Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Melba Jean Lietch

Melba Jean Wansley Lietch, 77, of Social Circle died Nov. 27, 2002.
A native of Elberton, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Reba Rice Wansley. She was retired after 22 years from Stone Mountain Memorial Park.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Margie Lietch of Lawrenceville and Robin and Joy Lietch of Braselton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Gloria and Tony Harris of Social Circle and Sherry and Ross Fuller of Loganville; three sisters, Marian Nicholson of Stone Mountain, Helen Thomason of Tucker and Brenda Rayle of Elberton; one brother, Joel Wansley of Ellenwood; and 22 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday at Wages & Son Funeral Home with the Revs. Dan Rice and Daniel Gissendaner officiating.
Wages & Sons Stone Mountain Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Jewell Thornton

Jewell Hall Thornton, 80, of 1384 Plantation Road in Elberton died Nov. 19, 2002.
A native of Hart County, she was a daughter of the late Grady Hall and Alice Brown Hall. She was a member of Harmony Baptist Church and a homemaker. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family and was preceded in death by her husband, James Allen Thornton, and a son, Larry Thornton.
Survivors include two daughters, Peggy Paramore and Glenda Jones, both of Elberton; a son, Harry Thornton of Elberton; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Nov. 21 at Harmony Baptist Church with the Rev. Lynn Kellum officiating. Burial was in Elmhurst Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Lanier Burdette, Ralph Burdette, Eugene Partain, Paul Chandler, Jimmy Mize and Andy Cornell.
Berry Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mike Coulter

Charles Michael "Mike" Coulter, 55, of 674 Ridgewood Drive in Hartwell, died Nov. 27, 2002, at his home.

A native of Columbus, he was a son of the late Glen Ashby Coulter and Gladys Goodroe Coulter. He was a retired area manager for the Georgia Power Co. and was a U.S. Army veteran. He was past president of the Hart County Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Hart County Historical Society and Museum board, the Hartwell Rotary Club, Hart County Community Leadership Advisory Committee, Hart YMCA, Hart County Industrial Building Authority, Hart County Industrial Development Authority, Franklin-Hart-Stephens Joint Development Authority and the Franklin/Hart Airport Authority. He was an original board member of the Hart County Historical Society and Museum, past president of the Hart County High School Athletic Booster Club, past chairman of the Leukemia Society and served on Georgia Power's Partner in Education with Hartwell Elementary School since 1990. He was a member of Hartwell First Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Judith "Judy" Coleman Coulter; a daughter, Traci Lynn Coulter Posey of Lavonia; three sons, Jason "Todd" Coulter of Martin, Timothy Michael Coulter of Watkinsville, and Troy Scott Coulter of Hartwell; two brothers, Tommy Coulter and Wayne Coulter; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday at Hartwell First Baptist Church with Dr. Hugh Kirby officiating. Burial was in Nancy Hart Memorial Park.

Strickland Funeral Home in Hartwell was in charge of arrangements.
