Kattie Lue Teasley

Kattie Lue Teasley, 83, of 112 Adams St. in Bowman died Sept. 26, 2003, at Hart County Hospital in Hartwell.
A native of Elbert County, she was a daughter of the late Willie and Ida Thornton James. She was a member of Hall Grove Baptist Church where she served on the usher and mother boards. She was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Teasley.
Survivors include a son, Larry D. Teasley; two daughters, Mildred Harper and Willie Ruth Teasley, all of Bowman; 15 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at Hall Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Turman Bolden officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mack's Funeral Home in Hartwell was in charge of arrangements.

Zelma Mewborn

Zelma Fleming Mewborn, 95, of Spring Valley Nursing Center died Sept. 23, 2003, at her home.
A native of Elbert County, she was a daughter of the late H.A. Fleming and Janie Elizabeth Gaines Fleming. She was a homemaker and a member of Bethesda United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Curtis Mewborn; and a son, Curtis F. Mewborn.
Survivors include a daughter, Phyllis M. Adams of Elberton; a daughter-in-law, Mary Helen Mewborn; two sisters, Lois F. Barton and Margaret Seymour, both of Elberton; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday at the chapel of Strickland Funeral Home in Hartwell with the Revs. Jim Winn and Billy Pittman officiating. Burial was in Bethesda United Methodist Church.
Memorials may be made to Bethesda United Methodist Church, 352 Bethesda Church Road, Hartwell, GA 30643.
Strickland Funeral Home in Hartwell was in charge of arrangements.

Sara Maxwell

Sara Marie Rice Maxwell, 83, of 148 South Thomas St. in Elberton died Sept. 26, 2003, at her home.
A native of Elbert County, she was a daughter of the late Robert "Lon" and Leila Thornton Vickery Rice. She was a retired school teacher and librarian and a 70-year member of Elberton First Baptist Church.
Survivors include her daughter, Sally M. Sullivan of Marietta; two sons, Frank P. Maxwell Jr. of Fayetteville, N.C., and R. Marc Maxwell of Tucker; three brothers, Lon E. Rice of Athens, Robert H. Rice of Atlanta and Gene T. Rice of Lewisville, Texas; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday at the chapel of Hicks Funeral Home with the Rev. Steve Fenlon officiating. Burial was in Elmhurst Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Elbert County Library or the library at First Baptist Church.
Nephews served as pallbearers.
Hicks Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Thomas Beasley

Thomas Roger Beasley, 60, of Deerfield Beach, Fla., died Sept. 25, 2003, at his home.
A native of Abbeville, S.C., he was a son of James Thomas Beasley of Westminster, S.C., and the late Lula Graham Beasley. He was a brick mason. He was a former resident of Elberton but had lived in Florida for about 30 years.
Survivors, in addition to his father, include a brother, Steven Beasley of Greenville, S.C.; two sisters, Ann Floyd and Vickie Payton, both of Elberton; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Sunday at the chapel of Hicks Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Scott officiating. Burial was in Forest Hills Memorial Park.
Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.
Pallbearers were Billy Ray McClain, Emory Hall, Jeffrey Yeargin, Terrel Campbell, Jody Howell and Walter Bunch.
Hicks Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Bobby Ray

Robert Fred "Bobby" Ray, 73, of 212 Elizabeth St. in Elberton died Jan. 22, 2004.
A native of Elbert County, he was a son of the late Fred Brooks Ray and Juliette Eaves Ray. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, a retired manager from a textile plant and was retired from the National Guard after 34 years of service. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Debby Scarborough; and a brother, Buck Ray.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Tim Wilhite of Elberton; a son-in-law, David Scarborough of Elberton; five sisters, Mary Willbanks of Jefferson, Jane Crisco of Covington, Susie Hall of Hartwell and Jenny Beckham and Pam Ray, both of Elberton; a brother, Larry Ray of Elberton; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday at the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral Home with the Rev. Steve Fenlon officiating. Burial was in Elmhurst Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Tom Wilhite Scholarship Fund at Elberton First Baptist Church.
Berry Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Lucious Allen

Lucious Murray Allen died Jan. 19, 2004.
A native of Elbert County, he was a son of Thelma Tate and the late Lucious Allen. He was a member of Rose Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include two daughters, Renae Jones of Athens and Angela Jones of Elberton; three sons, Marcells Hill of Athens and Lucious Allen Jr. and Larry Allen, both of Elberton; two sisters, Juanita Routh and Virginia Smith, both of Elberton; and a brother, Sid Smith of Elberton.
Memorial services were held Saturday at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Quincy Fortson officiating.
C.W. Phelps Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Nelle Gobel

Nelle Ferguson Gobel, 85, of Summerville, S.C., died Jan. 7, 2004, at her home.
A native of Birmingham, Ala., she was a daughter of the late Andrew Jackson Ferguson and Birdie Elizabeth Paris Ferguson. She attended Anderson College and was a member of The First Scots Presbyterian Church. She lived in Elberton for 50 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Francis Gobel Jr., and a brother, Andrew Jackson Ferguson Jr.
Survivors include two daughters, Sarah A. Gobel of Charleston, S.C., and Jeanne G. Speir of Loganville; two sisters, Elsie F. Kennedy of Greenville, S.C., and Floy F. Torbett of Marietta; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday at The First Scots Presbyterian Church. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Memorials may be made to The Presbyterian Home of South Carolina, 201 West 9th North St., Summerville, SC 29483, or The First Scots Presbyterian Church, 53 Meeting St., Charleston, SC 29401.

Ivan Carpenter

Ivan E. Carpenter, 99, of Hartwell died Jan. 23, 2004, at Hart County Hospital.
A native of Elbert County, she was a daughter of the late James Thomas Carpenter and Addie Adams Carpenter. She was a retired sixth and seventh grade school teacher after 42 years of service. She taught in Copper Hill, Tenn., Arlington, Va., and retired from the Elbert County School System. She was a graduate of the University of Georgia, a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Teachers Organization, the John Benson Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, the Hart County Retired Teachers Association and a former member of the Elbert Memorial Hospital Ladies Auxiliary. She was a member of Hartwell First United Methodist Church, the Elizabeth Matheson Circle and the Live Wire Sunday School Class. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Richard Carpenter, Thomas Carpenter and Lucas Carpenter; and two sisters, Lucille Haley and Helena Roberts.
Survivors include two sisters-in-law, Mary S. Carpenter of Hartwell and Mildred Carpenter of Elberton; nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday at the Hartwell First United Methodist Church with the Rev. R. Allen Stewart and the Rev. Charles Williams officiating. Burial was in Concord United Methodist Church cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Hartwell First United Methodist Church, 68 E. Howell St., Hartwell, GA 30643; or to the Carpenter DAR Scholarship Fund, 101 Fairview Ave., Hartwell, GA 30643.
Strickland Funeral Home in Hartwell was in charge of arrangements.

Maxine Wright

Maxine Vandiver Wright, 95, died Jan. 19, 2004, in Tampa, Fla.
A native of Hart County, she was a daughter of the late Enoch Bode "Boat" Herring and Mary Eleanor "Ella" Herring. She attended Georgia State College for Women and was a retired school teacher with 35 years of service in the Elbert County School System. She was a member of the First Methodist Church of Hartwell, where she taught Sunday School and was a member of the Page/Wesley UMW group. She was an active member of the Hartwell Daughters of the American Revolution and the Retired Teachers Association. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Fred Vandiver, and her second husband, Heyward Wright.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Maridean Vandiver and Keith Katzfey of Tampa, Fla.; three granddaughters; three great-grandchildren; and cousins.
Graveside services will be held in the family plot in Hartwell.
Memorials may be made to Hartwell First Methodist Church.
