Joseph L. Mattox

HARTWELL, Ga. -- Joseph L. "Loyd" Mattox, 69, of 150 Peachtee St. died Thursday, June 17, 2004, at his home.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Mack's Funeral Home, Hartwell.

Margaret Blackstock Bramlett

Feb. 21, 1920 -- June 16, 2004

CLAYTON, Ga. -- Margaret Blackstock Bramlett, 84, of Rose Circle died Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Betsy and Clifton Smith on Begonia Court in the Checherd Community.

She was the widow of Huell W. Bramlett.

Born in Cumming, she was the daughter of the late Jewell J. Blackstock and Ora Reid Blackstock. She was retired as a certified nursing assistant and was a member of the Clayton Baptist Church, the Carter-Miller Circle and the Philathea Sunday school class, which is the oldest Sunday school class of the church.

Surviving are daughters, Betsy Smith of Clayton, Hugllene Dickerson of Jackson and Janice Hammod of Cornelia; son, Harrison W. Bramlett of Cumming; brother, Charles J. "Jack" Blackstock of Dawsonville; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Wallace Blackstock and J.L. Blackstock, and sister, Lena Blackstock.

Services are at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Clayton Baptist Church by the Revs. Mike Campbell and Charles Blackstock; burial will be in Rabun Memory Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at Hunter Funeral Home. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. The family is at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Betsy and Clifton Smith on Begonia Court, off Claude Smith Road, in the Cheechero Community, Route 3, Clayton.

Louvenia Bruce

CANON, Ga. -- Louvenia Bruce, 63, of 699 Merritt Road died Tuesday, June 22, 2004, at Cobb Memorial Hospital.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Mack's Funeral Home, Hartwell.

Lucinda Mattox

Jan. 16, 1945 -- June 18, 2004

HARTWELL, Ga. -- Lucinda Clark Mattox, 59, of 171 Evalenda Drive died Friday, June 18, 2004, at her residence.

A native of Hart County, she was a member of Shiloh C.M.E. Church in Hartwell.

Surviving are widower, Lamar Mattox of Hartwell; son, Derrick Mattox of Salt Lake City; brother, Irvin Heard of Anderson; sisters, Maris Hardman of Elberton, Vanessa Thornton and Kimbla Rucker, both of Hartwell; and two grandchildren.

She was the daughter of the late Charlie V. and Mollie Allen Heard.

Services are at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Shiloh C.M.E. Church, Hartwell, with Pastor Eugene Whelchel and the Rev. Richard Frotson; burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Wednesday until hour of service.

The family is at the residence.

Mack's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Marty Cecil Pless

ELBERTON, Ga. -- Marty Cecil Pless, 38, of 203 S. Woodrow St., Clinton, SC, died Saturday, June 19, 2004.

Born in Elbert County, he was a son of Cecil Pless and the late Eulene Huguley Pless. He was of the Holiness Faith and car salesman.

Survivors include his fiance, Deanne Richardson of Clinton, SC; five daughters, Samantha Pless, Summer Pless, Savannah Pless, and Sabrina Pless all of Toccoa, GA, and Danielle Hendricks of Anderson, SC; one son, Ty Pless of Commerce, GA; his father, Cecil Pless of Covington, GA; one sister, Phyllis Ann Crawford of Elberton, GA; and one brother, Tony Pless of Jasper, GA.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 22 at 3PM at the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral Home with Rev. Bob McKinney officiating. Burial will be at Gaines Chapel Church in the Pless Cemetery.

The family will be at the home of Jimmy Pless, 2289 Harmony Rd., Elberton, and Deanne Richardson's sister Dale McKinney Poore at 207 McClure Dr. in Anderson, SC. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9PM Tuesday night at Berry Funeral Home.

Mildred Mercer Barton

ELBERTON, Ga. -- Mildred Mercer Barton, 66 of 222 Thomas St., Elberton, wife of Billy Barton died Tuesday, June 22, 2004 at Athens Regional Medical Center.

Born in Madison County, she was the daughter of the late Obie Dean and Marie Ray Dean. She was a member of Concord United Methodist Church, a secretary for Ed Shive Tire Co. and Jim's Minit Marts, and a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband of the home, Billy Barton; one daughter, Rhoda Mercer Dickerson of Elberton; two sons, Randall Mercer of Atlanta, GA and Richard Mercer of Newberry, SC; and three grandchildren, Juli Miller, Clint Dickerson, and Audrey Mercer.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 24, at 11AM at the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral Home with Rev. Mike Shearon officiating. Burial will be in Elmhurst Cemetery, Elberton. The family will be at the home, 222 Thomas St., Elberton and will receive friends from 6 to 8PM Wednesday night at Berry Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Clint Dickerson, Kris Mercer, Craig Mercer, Ray Turner, Steve Ridgeway, and Larry Bessinger.

Berry Funeral Home is in charge of the funeral arrangements for Mrs. Mildred Mercer Barton.

Theodore Gaines

HARTWELL, Ga. -- Theodore B. Gaines, 72, of 360 Rome St. died Monday, June 21, 2004, at Hart County Hospital.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Mack's Funeral Home, Hartwell.

Gloria Nystrom

LAVONIA, Ga. -- Gloria Michaud Nystrom, 80, of Winston-Salem, N.C., formerly of Lavonia, died May 28, 2004, in Winston-Salem.

Memorial services are at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Hamby Funeral Home, Lavonia. Interment will follow in the Lavonia City Cemetery.

James David Powers

June 24, 1914 -- June 24, 2004

CANON, Ga. -- James David Powers, 90, of 3334 Airline-Goldmine Road died Thursday, June 24, 2004, at Cobb Memorial Hospital, Royston.

Born in Franklin County, he was the son of the late William F. and Lula Crowe Powers. He was a retired farmer and a member of the Riverside Baptist Church. He was the widower of Margie Leola Hart Powers.

Surviving are sons, Melvin Powers of Canon, Mitchell Powers of Royston and Bobby Powers of Canon; daughters, Florence Coile of Royston, Helen Scoggins of Ila and JoAnn Bond and Betty Lord, both of Royston; sisters, Rena Crowe of Jefferson and Reba Johnson of Hartwell; 13 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two grandsons, David Coile and Neal Powers; four brothers, Aubrey, Jessie, Moody and Durey Powers; and three sisters, Ila Hemphill, Susie Stone and Cora Singleton.

Services are at 2 p.m. Sunday at Pruitt Funeral Home, Royston, by the Revs. Bill Avant and Roger Elrod; entombment will be in Franklin Memorial Gardens-South. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

The family will be at the home of Lee and JoAnn Bond, 111 Green St., Royston, Ga. 30662.

Mozelle Wilburn

April 25, 1924 -- June 24, 2004

EASTANOLLEE, Ga. -- Frances Mozelle Keener "Granny" Wilburn, 80, of Toms Creek Road died Thursday, June 24, 2004, at B.J.C. Medical Center in Commerce.

Born in Rabun County, she was the daughter of the late Myrtle Keener. She was a homemaker. She was the widow of S.Q. Wilburn.

Surviving are sons, David Wilburn and Carl Calvin Wilburn, both of Toccoa; daughters, Sarah Frances Moore and Mary Alice Simpson, both of Eastanollee; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, James Victor Wilburn and Buford Kenneth Wilburn.

Services are at 2 p.m. Saturday from the graveside at Rock Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Ray Bohannon. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to the service time on Saturday at Whitlock Mortuary, Toccoa.

Homer Thompson

MOUNTAIN CITY, Ga. - Homer "Ham" Lester Thompson, 73, of Mountain City died Friday, July 9, 2004, at Rabun County Memorial Hospital.

He was a lifelong resident of Rabun County and was employed in the construction industry as a heavy equipment operator.

Surviving are widow, Frances Hilliard Thompson; five children, Pam Thompson of Wiley, Brenda Rider of Elba, Ala., Rhonda Shope of Rabun Gap, Cindy Ballew of Wiley and Cissy Henry of Persimmon; sister, Lenora "Tootisie" Crane of Clayton; brothers, Tye Thompson of Clayton and Kermit Thompson of Persimmon; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was the son of the late Ralph Thompson and Hettie Thompson.He was preceded in death by a daughter, Penny Thompson; a brother, Tommy Thompson; and four sisters, Margie York, Cornelia Mashburn, Mildred Philyaw and Edith English.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Persimmon Baptist Church by the Rev. Greg Adkins; burial immediately followed at the Persimmon Community Cemetery. Visitation was held at Beck Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday.

Magdalene Oliver

June 30, 1934 - July 11, 2004

ALTO, Ga. - Magdalene Lackey Oliver, 70, of Alto died Sunday, July 11, 2004, at North East Georgia Medical Health Systems Lanier Park Campus.

Born in Habersham County, she worked at Yonah Reality, Big Birds Nest and was a homemaker. She was a member of Yonah Congregational Holiness Church.

Surviving are widower, B.L. Oliver of Alto; daughter, Karen Turner of Alto; sons, Every and Buck Oliver of Alto; brother, Roy Lee Lackey of Gainesville; and five grandchildren.

She was the daughter of the late Lonnie Demorest and Manda Jane Armour Lackey. She was preceded in death by brothers, James S. Lackey and Edward Lackey.

Services are at 2 p.m. Wednesday at McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home Chapel, Cornelia, by the Revs. John Umberhant, J. Clarence Reynolds and Lester Haynes; burial will follow in Yonah Congregational Holiness Church cemetery. The body is at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

The family is at the residence.

Wilda R. Weaver

Feb. 12, 1917 - July 10, 2004

TOCCOA, Ga. - Wilda Elizabeth Rudeseal Weaver, 87, of 3217 Davidson Road died Saturday, July 10, 2004, at her residence.

She was born and lived all of her life in Stephens County. She was employed with Trogdon Furniture Co. and the International Furniture Co. for a number of years. She was also a member of the Old Toccoa Baptist Church.

Surviving are daughter, Orene Finley of Toccoa; sons, Claude Weaver of Toccoa and Bruce Weaver of Kissimmee, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was the widow of Clarence Weaver and the daughter of the late James and Ida Deaton Rudeseal.

Services are at 2 p.m. Monday at the Hillcrest Chapel of the Acree-Davis Funeral Home; burial will be in the Old Toccoa Baptist Church cemetery.

The family will be at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Claude Weaver, 7278 DeFoor Road, Toccoa, and received friends at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Clyde English

Sept. 2, 1961 - Aug. 15, 2004

CLEVELAND, Ga. - Clyde Oscar English, 42, of Cleveland, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004 at his residence.

Born in Stephens County, he was employed as a sawyer with Hogan Lumber Company for the last five years. He was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are daughter, Lisa Davis of Cornelia; sons, Shane Davis of Cornelia and David English of Cleveland; parents, Harold and Vivian Hill English of Demorest; brothers, Eddie English, Keith English and Kim English, all of Demorest; sister, Cheryl Wheeler of Demorest; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Tim English; and grandparents, Noah and Emma Ford Hill and Clyde and Kathleen Smith English.

Services are at 2 p.m. Wednesday at McGahee-Griffin-Stewart Funeral Home Chapel, Cornelia, by the Rev. Keith Allison; burial will follow in Fairfield Baptist Church cemetery. The body is at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

The family is at the residence of his parents, Harold and Vivian English, 497 Old Ridge Road, Demorest, Ga. 30535.
