Mr. Eugene Lowe Sr.

Retired social worker

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. -- Mr. Eugene ``Gene'' Yerby Lowe Sr. died Wednesday, March 11, 1998.

A memorial service will be held in Mount Vernon at a later date.

Mr. Lowe, a native of Augusta, was a graduate of Fist University and the Atlanta University school of social work. He had retired as a social worker and was a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Augusta.

Survivors include his wife, Miriam V. Lowe; a son, Eugene Yerby Lowe Jr., Princeton, N.J.; a daughter, Emily Susan Lowe, Mount Vernon; and two brothers, Francis Lowe, Jamaica, and Rufus Lowe, Augusta.

Friends may call at Dent's Undertaking Establishment, Augusta.

Mrs. Viola Mooney

Bookkeeper

GREENSBORO, Ga. -- Mrs. Viola Ruth Dreyer Mooney, 92, of 203 S. Walnut St., died Friday, March 13, 1998, at Minnie G. Boswell Memorial Hospital.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today at Greensboro City Cemetery with the Rev. David Sandridge officiating.

Mrs. Mooney, a native of Penfield, was a graduate of Greensboro High School and a bookkeeper for Citizens Union Bank. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Greensboro.

Survivors include one brother, Shelby Ernest Dreyer, Greensboro; and two sisters, Edith D. Hancock and Dorothy D. Durden, both of Atlanta.

Friends may call at McCommons Funeral Home.

Miss Winnie Overstreet

Retired teacher

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. -- Miss Winnie Overstreet, 90, died Saturday, March 14, 1998.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Moores Funeral Home with Dr. Harold Lawrence officiating. Burial will be in Memory Hill Cemetery.

Miss Overstreet, a native of Wadley, was a graduate of Georgia State College for Women and a 1951 graduate of Emory University. She had retired as a teacher and had taught at the Academy of Richmond County. She was a former University Centers Language Association of Georgia Teacher of the Year. She was a member of First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include one sister-in-law, Geraldine Overstreet, Milledgeville; and one nephew.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, Milledgeville.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Ernestine Penjuke

Retired nursing assistant

DALLAS, N.C. -- Mrs. Ernestine Chavis Penjuke, 73, of 304 N. College St., died Friday, March 13, 1998, at Gaston Memorial Hospital, Gastonia.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Good Hope Baptist Church, Saluda, S.C. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Penjuke had retired from the Helen Wilkes Nursing Home as a nursing assistant.

Survivors include a son, Jonnie Gleaton, Dallas; two brothers, Wilbur Chavis, Dallas, and Clinton Chavis, Auburn, Ga.; a sister, Lou Bertha Haynes, Columbia; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Ramey Funeral Home, Saluda.

Mr. Godfrey Platts Sr.

Carpenter

SALLEY -- Mr. Godfrey Platts Sr., 79, of 140 Weathersby Road, died Friday, March 13, 1998, at Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Augusta.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Blizzard Funeral Home, Wagener, with the Rev. Roy Broad officiating. Burial will be in Aiken Memorial Park, Aiken.

Mr. Platts, a native of Allendale County, was a carpenter and an Army veteran of World War II. He received the Purple Heart, the Campaign Medal with seven Bronze Stars and the Emet Medal with seven Bronze Stars. He was a member of Midland Park Baptist Church, Charleston.

Survivors include his wife, Anna Bell Platts; four sons, John Lee Platts, Summerville, Robert P. Platts, Winter Haven, Fla., Godfrey Platts Jr., Salley, and Joseph C. Platts, St. Stephens; a daughter, Dianne Platts, Salley; a stepson, Curtis R. Gomillion, Goose Creek; a stepdaughter, Patricia Thompson, North Charleston; a brother, Seymoure Platts Jr., Charleston; a sister, Areminta Thomkins, Charlotte, N.C.; and 19 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Friends may call today at the funeral home.

Mrs. Judy Rachels

Mrs. Judy E. Rachels, 36, of 2463 Panda Lane Road, Appling, died Saturday, March 14, 1998, at her residence.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Kiokee Baptist Church with Don Widener officiating.

Mrs. Rachels, a native of Jacksonville, Fla., was a homemaker and a member of the Augusta Christian Women's Club. She was a member of Kiokee Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Brinson Rachels Sr.; two sons, James Eric Rachels and Roy Brinson Rachels Jr., both of Appling; two brothers, Calvin Fulmer and Elliott Fulmer, both of Thomson; and two sisters, Cindy Nash and Lonny Pyzybysyz, both of Thomson.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Starling Funeral Home, Harlem.

Mr. Willie Sanders

Mr. Willie Bill ``Hammer'' Sanders, 57, of 1135 Camille St., died Sunday, March 8, 1998, at his residence.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Morning Star Baptist Church with the Rev. William Bussey officiating. Burial will be in Walker Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Sanders, a native of Shelby, N.C., had worked for Lewis Parts Co.

Survivors include his wife, Gloria Sanders; two sons, Willie Sanders Jr. and Bruce Sanders; five stepsons, Kelvin Mingledolph, Carl Mingledolph, Chris Mingledolph, Derrick Mingledolph and Barry Mingledolph, all of Augusta; four stepdaughters, Sherrie McCray, Angie Osborne, Monique McDonal and Kim Mingledolph, all of Augusta; his mother, Rebecca Sanders, Shelby; two brothers, Jonah Sanders and Melvin Sanders, both of Shelby; and three sisters, Lillie Mae Wilson, Angeline Gaines and Jinnie Rivers, all of Shelby.

Pallbearers will be Willie Green, Bobby Nelson, Harvy McCray, Charles Mitchell, Mario Robinson and Malrin Wallace.

GREENWOOD, S.C. -- Mrs. Margaret Smith, 87, of 214 Eastman Drive, died Friday, March 13, 1998, in Edgefield County.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m. today at Harley Funeral Home with the Rev. Eleazer Benenhaley officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Smith, a native of Alabama, had retired from Self Memorial Hospital and was a member of Harris Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Kenneth Smith, Warner Robins, Ga.; two daughters, Jo Anne Klinck, Dunlap, Tenn., and Celia Valentine, Edgefield; two brothers, Lewis King, Anderson, and Hall King, Clinton; and eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons.

Mr. Charles Watson

SYLVANIA, Ga. -- Mr. Charles E. Watson, 90, died Saturday, March 14, 1998, at Sylview Health Care Center.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Thompson-Strickland-Waters Funeral Home with the Rev. George Pevey and Dr. John Waters officiating. Burial will be in Sylvania City Cemetery.

Mr. Watson, a native of Chatham County, had retired as owner of Watson Shoe Repair and had retired from the Screven County Board of Education as a school bus driver. He was a member of Sylvania First Baptist Church.

Survivors include five sons, Thomas Arnold Watson, Hugh Elmo Watson and Craig Lee Watson, all of Virginia Beach, Va., James Leonard Watson, Sylvania, and Glenn Edward Watson, Bonaire; a daughter, Vicki W. Waters, Sylvania; two brothers, R.L. Watson, Virginia Beach, and James Arthur Watson, Savannah; three sisters, Dorothy W. Ivey, Hialeah, Fla., Gladys W. Huard, Dade City, Fla., and Florence W. Smith, Conover, N.C.; and 16 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Jimmy Watson, Thomas Waters, Jeff Pye, J. Pye, Danny Smith and Bill Smith.

SAN DIEGO -- Mr. Matthew Williams died Monday, March 9, 1998, at Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Mr. Williams, a native of Eastover, had served in the Navy.

Survivors include a brother, Richard Williams, Augusta; and three sisters, Elouise Williamson and Louise Williams, both of Little Rock, Ark., and Emma Williams, Columbia.

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Mrs. Wanda Hays Barker, 82, died Monday, March 16, 1998.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Carolina Memorial Funeral Home, North Charleston. Burial will be in Carolina Memorial Gardens, North Charleston.

Mrs. Barker, a native of Knott County, Ky., was a Baptist.

Survivors include five sons, Clifford R. Barker, Cincinnati, Ronald Barker, Aiken, Norman D. Barker, Bulan, Ky., David H. Barker, Sassafras, Ky., and J.T.
