Mr. Robert Brown

Veteran

Mr. Robert E. Brown, 66, died Monday, May 11, 1998, at Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Mr. Brown, a native of Belvedere, was an Army Signal Corps veteran of the Korean War and had retired from Trooper Industries.

Survivors include his wife, Sue Powell Brown; two daughters, Donna Brown, Alma, Mich., and Vickie Brown Hinkley, Sabattus, Maine; one brother, Jerry Brown, North Augusta; two sisters, Evelyn Stone and Yvonne Lipski, both of Martinez; and six grandchildren.

Mr. Brown donated his body to the Medical College of Georgia.

Mr. William Eskew Jr.

Army retiree

Date of announcement: May 12, 1998

WAYNESBORO, Ga. -- Mr. William F. Eskew Jr., 66, of 629 Cherokee Drive, died Monday, May 11, 1998, at Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center.

Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Burke Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Eskew, a native of Jefferson County, was retired from the Army as sergeant first class and was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars, where he served in special forces. He was also retired from the Department of Corrections.

Survivors include his wife, Rita J. Eskew; three sons, Donald E. Eskew and William E. Eskew, both of Fayetteville, N.C., and W. Mack Hickman, Wilmington, N.C.; his mother, Mildred E. Eskew, Waynesboro; three sisters, Maggie E. Forehand, Millen, Ann E. Cockrell, Lexington, S.C., and Margaret Ann Quick, Waynesboro; and one grandchild.

Pallbearers will be the military honor guard.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at DeLoach Funeral Home.

Mrs. Margaret Duncan

Graniteville Co. retiree

BEECH ISLAND -- Mrs. Margaret Gregory Duncan, 76, of 426 Ron Road, died Monday, May 11, 1998, at Magnolia Hill Nursing Home, Augusta.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Hatcher Funeral Home, Langley, with the Rev. Ronnie Duncan officiating. Burial will be in Graniteville Cemetery, Graniteville.

Mrs. Duncan, a native of Aiken County, had retired from Graniteville Co.

Survivors include three sons, Lewis Duncan and William Duncan, both of Lincolnton, Ga., and Lonnie Duncan, Warrenville; two daughters, Judy Parker, Beech Island, and Patrel Steer, Ocala, Fla.; two brothers, Bill Gregory, North Augusta, and Stan Gregory, Clearwater; one sister, Gloria Page, Clearwater; and 16 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Waylon Duncan, Tim Parker, B.J. Duncan, Perry Parker, Chris Duncan and Colt Parker.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mr. Martin Gutierrez

CLEARWATER -- Mr. Martin G. Gutierrez, 30, of 54 Happiness Lane, died Saturday, May 9, 1998.

Mr. Gutierrez, a native of San Pedro, Mexico, was an employee of Rhodes Forestry, Aiken.

Survivors include his wife, Adyee O. Avila, Mexico City; one son, Lius Ferdinand Gutierrez, Mexico City; and his parents, Clemente and Francisca Gutierrez, Mexico City.

Mr. Freddie Hill Sr.

Retired construction worker

WARRENTON, Ga. -- Mr. Freddie Lee Hill Sr., 68, of Ogeechee Road, died Friday, May 8, 1998, at McDuffie County Hospital.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Union Baptist Church with the Rev. John A. Lockhart officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Hill, a native of Warren County, was retired from Rochester Roofing Co. as a construction worker and was a member of The Temple of Truth Outreach Ministries.

Survivors include his wife, Malinda Hill, Rochester, N.Y.; seven sons, Willie Hill, Thomas Hill, Charles Hill, Michael Hill, Donald Hill and William Hill, all of Rochester, and Freddie Lee Hill Jr., Orlando, Fla.; five daughters, Gracie Hill-Lang, Malinda Hill, Bertha Davis, Theresa Hill and Patricia Hill, all of Rochester; one brother, James Hill, Wrens; three sisters, Rena Lott, Warrenton, Mable Moss, Jewell, and Mildred Ficklen, Rochester; and 36 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at 12:30 p.m. today at Ingram Brothers Funeral Home, Sparta.

Mrs. Eartha Johnson

AIKEN -- Mrs. Eartha D. Johnson, 63, of 1126 Chatfield St., died Friday, May 8, 1998, at her residence.

Mrs. Johnson was a native of Aiken.

Mrs. Johnson, a native of Milan, was retired from E-Z-Go and was a Baptist.

Mrs. McFarland, a native of New York, was retired from the Edgefield office of the Farmers Home Administration and was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Aiken. She volunteered with Area Churches Together Saving and was a member of the Rainbow Club.

Survivors include two sons, Robert B. McFarland, Lions Bay, British Columbia, and Warren L. McFarland, Hampton, Va.; two daughters, Sandra M. Bartlett, Aiken, and Donna M. Ormand, Laurinburg, N.C.; and eight grandchildren and five grandchildren.

GROVETOWN -- Mr. Charley P. ``Phil'' Sims Jr., 41, of 583 Old Wheeler Road, died Sunday, May 10, 1998, at Columbia Augusta Medical Center.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Elliott Sons Funeral Home, Lumpkin Road, with the Rev. Len Chavis officiating. Burial will be in Westover Memorial Park.

Mr. Sims, a native of Vicksburg, Miss., was a senior materials engineer with Bechtel at Savannah River Site. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, North Augusta, and Local No. 619 Pipefitters Union, Vicksburg. He was a graduate of Aiken Technical College and Warren Central High School, Vicksburg.

Survivors include his wife, Tina P. Sims; one son, Christopher Sims, Grovetown; two daughters, Samantha Sims, Grovetown, and Bailey Sims, Battleground, Wash.; his mother, Retha Tanner, Vicksburg; one brother, Al Sims, Homestead, Fla.; and one sister, Pam Cook, Vicksburg.

Pallbearers will be Byron Williams, Lee Dellenvaugh, Dominick Southmayd, Don Salvadore, Phil Hewitt, Clark Von Nyvenheim, Rick Burns and Stephen Ramp.

Mrs. Emma Symms

Date of announcement: May 12, 1998

Mrs. Emma Adele Lehman Symms, 92, died Sunday, May 10, 1998, at St. Joseph Hospital.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Platt's Funeral Home, Crawford Avenue, with the Revs. Roger Murchison and David Jones officiating. Burial will be in Westover Memorial Park.

Mrs. Symms, a native of Rockville, Md., was a member of First Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school and served in the Cradle Role Department. She was a graduate of Rockville High School and was a volunteer with the United Services Organization during World War II. She volunteered at Oliver General Hospital as a Red Cross Gray Lady, Veterans Affairs Lenwood Hospital, the Old Williford's Children's Hospital and University Hospital. She served the Veterans Affairs Medical Center under the Service Star Organization. In 1985, she was named humanitarian of the year by the University Health Care Foundation.

Survivors include one son, Robert Louis Symms, Augusta; one daughter, Mary Symms Byrd, Evans; and 11 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be David M. Byrd, Stephen A. Byrd, Mark H. Symms, Andrew F. Symms, Wayne Sale, Denzil Beeson, M. Milton Steinberg and John Joe.

Memorials may be made to Community Outreach, Baylie Symms Fund, 1301 Greene St., Augusta, GA 30901; or to First Baptist Church, Music Memorial Fund, 3500 Walton Way, Augusta, GA 30909.
