Mrs. Florene Newsome

Mrs. Florene Hardin Newsome, 92, of 1907 Clark Drive, died Thursday, May 14, 1998, at Columbia Augusta Medical Center.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Avera, with the Rev. Donald Lumpkin officiating.

Mrs. Newsome, a native of Glascock County, was a homemaker.

Survivors include two sons, Gene Newsome and Alva Newsome, both of Augusta; two daughters, Orie N. Collins, North Augusta, and Opal N. Johnson, Yantis, Texas; and 16 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Tim Newsome, Curt Newsome, Rex Johnson, Lansin Newsome, Kirk Johnson and Tommy Newsome.

Friends may call at the residence of Gene Newsome, 1907 Clark Drive.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Sheppard Funeral Home, Gibson.

Mrs. Faye Rhodes

TENNILLE, Ga. -- Mrs. Faye Shurling Rhodes, 67, of 325 Franklin St., died Thursday, May 14, 1998, in the Washington County Regional Medical Center.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Piney Mount Methodist Church. Burial will be in Zeta Cemetery.

Mrs. Rhodes, a native of Washington County, was a homemaker and a member of Piney Mount Methodist Church and the Piney Mount Homemakers Club.

Survivors include her husband, Harold Rhodes; two daughters, Deborah Rhodes, Tennille, and Susie Bilimoria, Macon; her mother, Neva P. Shurling; one brother, Jack S. Shurling, Tennille; two sisters, Jacqueline Oveman, Augusta, and Amie Pearson, Milledgeville; and three grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 632, Sandersville, GA 31802, or the Methodist Home for Children and Youth, P.O. Box 2525, Macon, GA 31203.

Friends may call at the residence.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at E.K. May Funeral Home.

Mrs. Callie Sloan

Retired chef

HARLEM -- Mrs. Callie Opal Sloan, 76, of 230 E. Trippe St., died Monday, May 11, 1998, at University Hospital.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Price Funeral Home, Troy, Mich. Burial will be in Cadillac Memorial Garden, Michigan.

Mrs. Sloan, a native of Harrisburg, Ill., was a retired chef and a member of Ryan Road Baptist Church, Michigan, and the Eastern Star.

Survivors include three daughters, Sue Matt, Lenexa, Kan., Peggy Pennington, Harlem, and Pamela Davis, Rochester Hills, Mich.; and five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends today at Price Funeral Home.

Starling Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Mr. Hayward Stockton

THOMSON -- Mr. Hayward Stockton, 57, of 622 Matthew St., died Monday, May 11, 1998, at Vencor Hospital, Atlanta.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Greater St. James African Methodist Episcopal Church with the Rev. Henry D. Andrews officiating. Burial will be in Westview Cemetery.

Mr. Stockton, a native of McDuffie County, was a member of Greater St. James African Methodist Episcopal Church.

The family said he was a very devoted husband, father, brother and grandfather, who enjoyed having fun with his family and friends. He will be missed.

Survivors include his wife, Annie Kate Roberts Stockton; four sons, Anthony Stockton, Korea, Timothy Stockton, Thomson, Maurice Stockton, Fayetteville, N.C., and Kenneth Stockton, Fort Belvore, Va.; two daughters, Gwendolyn Roberts and Alesia Stockton, both of Thomson; two brothers, James Howard and Tolbert Morris Jr., both of Lithonia, Herman Howard Jr., Albany, and Arthur Ree Stockton Jr. and Billy William Stockton, both of Florence, S.C.; two sisters, Olivia Howard and Delois Daniels, both of Thomson; and 13 grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be trustees and stewards of Greater St. James African Methodist Episcopal Church.

Friends may call at the residence or at Thomson Funeral System.

The family will receive friends after the burial, at the church annex.

Mrs. Mary Walton

OLIVIA, N.C. -- Mrs. Mary Walton, 86, died Friday, May 8, 1998, at Knollwood Gardens Rest Home, Lillington.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Presbyterian Church, Washington, Ga., with the Rev. Harry Hannah officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Cemetery, Washington.

Mrs. Walton, a native of Decatur, Ga., was a retired registered nurse.

Survivors include one son, George Walton, Olivia; and three grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Marc Walton, Shannon Borkowski, Jim Griggs, Lee Campbell, Tom Smith and Kari Engleson.

Mr. William Woodbury

HEPHZIBAH -- Mr. William Thomas ``Woody'' Woodbury, 56, of 1291 Brown Road, died Wednesday, May 13, 1998, in Augusta.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. today at Elliott Sons Funeral Home, Lumpkin Road, with the Rev. Don Reeves officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Augusta.

Mr. Woodbury, a native of Taber City, N.C., was a general foreman of engineering with the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He had served in the Navy.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Barfield Woodbury, Hephzibah; two daughters, Cindy Anderson, Harlem, Cheryl Plowden, Augusta; two sisters, Polly Fisher, Nichols, S.C., and Linda Collins, Mullins, S.C.; and three grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Ronnie Ling, Donnie Barfield, Gary Shay, Bill Barfield, Marvin Toulson and Jackie Woodbury.

Honorary pallbearers will be supervisors in the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center engineering department.

Mrs. Beaver, a native of Augusta, was the co-owner of Augusta Express Car Wash and retired from AT&T Corp. She was a member of Red Oak Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Sandy E. Beaver Jr.; two sons, Westley Allen Beaver and William Michael Beaver, both of Augusta; her mother, Mary E. King, Augusta; two sisters, Joyce Bednarski, Windsor, and Mary Nell Cason, Lincolnton, Ga.; and 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Pallbearers will be R.O. Barton, Stewart Garret, Wayne Broome, Dave Powell, Mike Newton and Gary Munn.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Exchange Club of Columbia County.

Mr. Claxton, a native of Johnson County, was a retired carpenter and a member of Gumlog Primitive Baptist Church, where he had served as a deacon, and Carpenters and Joiners Union, Augusta.

Survivors include one son, Edwin Claxton, Kite; one brother, Buren Claxton, Wrightsville; two sisters, Willouise Spivey, Smyrna, and Annette Ivey, Kite; and two grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Nick Ivey, Jimmy Ivey, Zach Claxton, Doug Proctor, Joel Scott and Bruce Henderson.

Friends may call at the residence of Annette Ivey.

Mr. Dobson, a native of Allendale, was employed by the Aiken Sanitation Department and was a Baptist.

Survivors include his wife, Jetnella Dobson, North Carolina; one son, Alfred Dobson Jr., Florida; two daughters, Francina Ann Dobson, Aiken, and LaTasha Glover, New York; two brothers, Monie Dobson Jr., Florida, and Joe Dobson, New Jersey; two sisters, Loudella Dobson and Diane Copeland, both of Aiken; and five grandchildren.

George Funeral Homes, Park Avenue, is in charge of arrangements.
