Mrs. Mary Brooks

BATESBURG, S.C. -- Mrs. Mary Ellen Brooks, 77, of 214 Magnolia St., died Thursday, May 28, 1998, at Kennestone Hospital, Marietta, Ga.

The funeral will be at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Rock Hill Baptist Church, Saluda, with the Rev. R.L. Parrish officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Brooks, a native of Saluda, was a member of Hurt Street Baptist Church, Atlanta.

Survivors include her husband, Jake Brooks, Aiken; two sons, James Robert Brooks, Cleveland, and Willie James Brooks, Aiken; five daughters, Sectria Williams, Batesburg, Ernestine Parrish, Decatur, Ga., Christine Jackson, Columbia, Vivian Cullum, Aiken, and Alvesina Lee, Monetta; a sister, Bennie Lee Smith, Cleveland; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Friends may call after 3 p.m. Tuesday at Jackson-Brooks Funeral Home, Aiken.

Dr. James Bryson

Civic leader

Date of announcement: May 31, 1998

Dr. James Turner Bryson, a Washington, Ga., civic leader and retired veterinarian, died Saturday, May 30, 1998. Dr. Bryson, of 106 Barksdale Drive, was 78.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church of Washington with the Revs. Ryan Seawright, Grady Mosely and Bill Boyd officiating. Burial with Masonic rites will be in Resthaven Cemetery.

Dr. Bryson, a native of Madison, Ga., had lived in Washington for 58 years. He was a 1936 graduate of the Academy of Richmond County and a 1940 graduate of the University of Georgia, where he received his doctorate in veterinary medicine in 1950.

He was an Army veteran of World War II and earned the position of master sergeant. He served on Washington City Council from 1959 to 1963 and served on Washington-Wilkes Airport Commission from 1963 to 1988. He served on Wilkes County Board of Health for 33 years and was chairman of the board for 17 years.

Dr. Bryson was a founding member of Washington-Wilkes Chamber of Commerce and Washington-Wilkes Historical Society. He served on the Georgia Historical Commission from 1965 to 1975, co-founded the Georgia Trust for Historical Preservation, and served on the Georgia Review Board for the National Register of Historic Properties.

He served on the Mary Willis Library Board for 32 years and was a 58-year member of the Kiwanis Club. He had retired as director of tourism for Washington-Wilkes Chamber of Commerce and founded the annual Mule Day Celebration.

He was a member and trustee of Washington First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Shari Ann Bryson; a son, James Turner Bryson Jr., Washington; five daughters, Kris Fisher and Konnie Kvalheim, both of Washington, Mackie B. Combs, Thomson, Kathi Babb, Honea Path, S.C., and Kim Saggus, Anderson, S.C.; a brother, Sidney Bryson, Siloam; a sister, Gene B. Wilson, Black Mountain, N.C.; and 13 grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Milton Roberts Sr., Randy Lamkin, Dilmus Blackmon, Smith M. Wilson, Les Sales and Robert Simmons.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Kiwanis Club.

Memorials may be made to the J.T. Bryson Cabin Fund c/o City of Washington, P.O. Box 9, Washington, GA 30673.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Hopkins Funeral Home.

Mrs. Marilyn Clary

BARNWELL, S.C. -- Mrs. Marilyn Ferrell Clary, 60, died Saturday, May 30, 1998, in Columbia.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Mole Funeral Home. Burial with Order of Eastern Star rites will be in Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Clary, a native of Charleston, was office manager at Peterson-Estep Accountants. She was a member of the Harmony Hope Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include a son, James E. Clary, Knoxville, Tenn.; a daughter, Patricia McCraven, Braselton, Ga.; and one grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mrs. Ruby Gilmer

HARLEM -- Mrs. Ruby D. Gilmer, 78, of 980 County Line Road, died Saturday, May 30, 1998, at Thomson Manor Nursing Home.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Dearing Full Gospel Church, Dearing, with the Revs. Eddie Renew and Ricky Stokley officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Gilmer, a native of McDuffie County, was a homemaker and a member of Dearing Full Gospel Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Ann Waller, Harlem; and one grandchild and two great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Larry Oglesby, Mack Gilmer, Herman Gay, Pete Reeves, Melvin Gay and David Gilmer.

Mr. Cecil Greenway

SANDERSVILLE, Ga. -- Mr. Cecil Edward Greenway, 73, of 727 E. McCarty St., died Saturday, May 30, 1998, at Washington Regional Medical Center.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Sisters Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Greenway, a native of Washington County, had retired from the Georgia Department of Agriculture in the weights and measurements division, and he had retired from Riner Hardware Co. as a parts manager. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of Sisters Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Billie Greenway; a daughter, Jackie Greenway Jones, Sandersville; a brother, Jack Greenway, Augusta; a sister, Margaret Alford, Bartow; and two grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Glyn Chalker, Billy Johnson, Jerry Flanders, Kenneth Gillis, Harvey Welch, Gene Ogletree, Watson Mosley and Tim Harrell.

Memorials may be made to Sisters Baptist Church.

Mr. Riccardo Hamilton

Mr. Hamilton, a 22-year former Augusta resident, was an Army veteran and a Purple Heart recipient.

Survivors include an adopted daughter, Valerie Million, Grovetown; his parents, Johnnie Hamilton and Beatrice Hamilton, Cleveland; and a sister, Barbara Bryant, Cleveland.

Mr. Edward Harwell

EDGEFIELD, S.C. -- Mr. Edward Vernon Harwell, 81, of 19 Garrett Road, died Friday, May 29, 1998, at his residence.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Grace United Methodist Church, North Augusta, with the Rev. John Newell officiating. Burial will be at 4 p.m. in Evergreen Cemetery, Charlotte, N.C.

Mr. Harwell, a native of Charlotte, was a district operations manager for the United States Postal Service. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict. He was a member of Matthews Masonic Lodge 461, Scottish Rite 32 and Egypt Temple Shrine. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Stillwell Bible Class.

Survivors include his wife, Mable L. Harwell; three daughters, Frances Johnson, Aiken, Sharon Rogers, Charlotte, and Cynthia Kroes, Edgefield; and seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mr. Elbert Holloway

AIKEN -- Mr. Elbert Holloway, 85, of 424 Powderhouse Road S.E., died Tuesday, May 26, 1998, at St. Joseph Hospital, Augusta.

The funeral will be at 4 p.m. Monday at Second Baptist Church with the Revs. Douglas A. Slaughter and Reginald D. Simmons officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memory Gardens, Graniteville.

Mr. Holloway, a native of Edgefield County, had retired from Warneke Cleaners as a presser. He was a member and former trustee of Second Baptist Church, where he sang in the senior choir and the male chorus.

Survivors include his wife, Sarah Holloway; a son, Elbert Genova Holloway; seven daughters, Gloria Allen, Frances Duncan, Betty Carter, Deloris Foust, Carolyn Clark, Debra Dowling and Vanessa Jennings; and 29 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be deacons.

Friends may call at the residence.

Mrs. Gertrude Johnson

FOLKSTON, Ga. -- Mrs. Gertrude Johnson died Friday, May 29, 1998, at Jefferson County Hospital.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Folkston United Methodist Church with the Revs. Dan Williamson and Gene McCullough officiating. Burial will be in Folkston City Cemetery.

Mrs. Johnson, a native of Camden County, was a homemaker and a member of Folkston Garden Club. She was a member of Folkston United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the United Methodist Women and taught Sunday school.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Ann Armistead, Bartow; a brother, Lawrence J. Wildes, Riverdale; a sister, Aderine Reynolds, St. Marys; and two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Johnny Jones, David Jones, Forrest Wildes, Clint Johnson, Lindsey Jones, Sidney Wildes and Pierce Harris.
