Mr. George McDaniel

GROVETOWN -- Mr. George Clayton McDaniel, 56, of 215 Berzelia Road, died Friday, June 5, 1998, at Columbia Augusta Medical Center.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday from Clifford Memorial Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Don Reeves officiating. Burial will be in Bellevue Memorial Gardens.

Mr. McDaniel, a native of Wrightsville, had retired from Lily Tulip and worked for Don Swann Inc. as a salesman. He was a Navy veteran and a member of Clifford Memorial Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Marie McDaniel; three sons, Michael McDaniel, Orlando, Fla., Burton McDaniel, Martinez, and Scott McDaniel, Evans; his mother and stepfather, Clarice Cooper and Carlos Cooper, Savannah; three sisters, Faye Edenfield and Glenda Haupt, both of Savannah, and Sue Glidewell, Milledgeville; and five grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Dale Ferguson, Charles Reville, Danny Allmond, Bruce Cliatt, Romie Tucker, Gene Neskorik, Jeff Dorn Sr. and Durwood Turner.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Platt's Funeral Home, Belair Road.

Rev. Melvin Robinson

Retired educator

AIKEN -- The Rev. Melvin Robinson, 68, of 342 Williamsburg St., died Thursday, June 4, 1998, at Aiken Regional Medical Centers.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Friendship Baptist Church with the Rev. Alf Mills officiating. Burial will be in Greenfield Cemetery, Hempstead, N.Y.

The Rev. Robinson had retired as an educator. He was pastor of Zion Baptist Church and a member of the Aiken Ministerial Alliance. He was a member of the Bettis Academy Heritage Corridor.

Survivors include his wife, Juanita McManus Robinson; two sons, Melvin Robinson, Hempstead, and Julian McManus, Washington; a daughter, Andrea R. Jefferson, Hempstead; three brothers, Abraham Robinson and Wade Robinson, both of Hempstead, and Frank Roberson, Clearwater; three sisters, Georgianne Scott, Atlanta, Diane Casey, Fayetteville, N.C., and Brenda Adams, Graniteville; and six grandchildren.

Friends may call at the residence or at Davis Funeral Home, Johnston.

Mrs. Virginia Rogers

SWAINSBORO, Ga. -- Mrs. Virginia ``Vicki'' Kesler Rogers, 70, died Friday, June 5, 1998, at her residence.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ronnie Wills officiating. Burial will be in Swainsboro City Cemetery.

Mrs. Rogers, a native of Jackson County, was a homemaker and a graduate of Brenau College, where she was a member of Phi Mu Sorority. She was a member and past president of the Glad Garden Club, a former Girl Scout leader and had chaired the Clean Community Commission. She was a member of the David Emanuel Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and was named 1989 Lady of the Year by the Theta Eta Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, where she was a past president of the United Methodist Women and served as a Methodist Youth Fellowship Counselor.

Survivors include her husband, William C. Rogers Sr.; three sons, William C. ``Bill'' Rogers Jr., Swainsboro, Thomas H. Rogers, Statesboro, and Richard W. Rogers, Adrian; a daughter, Audrey Anne Montgomery, Beaufort, S.C.; a brother, Stanley Kesler, Wilmington, N.C.; and nine grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Steve Bullington, Frank Canady, Richard McNeely, Ronnie Cameron, John David Bailey, Milton Gray, Denny Key and Jerry Cadle.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of Thursday Morning Prayer Group, Gordon Fountain Sr. Sunday School Class, Ida Bell Williams Book Club, Madelyn Rountree Circle, No Agenda Club, Sewing Club, Old Church Kitchen Committee, David Emanuel Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and employees of the Forest Blade.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church or to the Emanuel County chapter of the American Cancer Society.

WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Mrs. Mary Wright Satcher, 88, of 404 Joseph's Walker Drive, died Friday, June 5, 1998, at Laurel Crest Retirement Home.

Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at Mount of Olives Cemetery, Johnston, with the Rev. Keith Polk officiating.

Mrs. Satcher, a native of Atlanta, was a homemaker and a member of Johnston United Methodist Church. She was a charter member of the Peach Blossom Garden Club, Johnston.

Survivors include two sons, James H. Satcher Jr., Johnston, and Benjamin W. Satcher, Lexington; and 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Benjamin W. Satcher Jr., Robert C. Satcher, David S. Satcher, D.J. Carmean, James H. Satcher III, H. Clarke Bynum Jr., Roy Cleveland and Bill Smith.

Memorials may be made to Johnston United Methodist Church or to the American Cancer Society.

NORTH AUGUSTA -- Mrs. Julie Sumerau Smalley died Thursday, June 4, 1998, at University Hospital, Augusta.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Westover Memorial Park, Augusta.

Mrs. Smalley, a native of Augusta, was a lab technician.

Survivors include her husband, Travis W. Smalley; her parents, Ed and Pat Sumerau, North Augusta; a brother, Jason E. Sumerau, North Augusta; and a sister, Shannon Sumerau Fowler, North Augusta.

Mr. Raymond Wells

THOMSON -- Mr. Raymond Jesse Wells, 70, of 1365 Wrens Highway, died Friday, June 5, 1998, at McDuffie County Hospital.

Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Jimmy Elder officiating.

Mr. Wells, a native of Screven County, had retired as owner and CEO of Well-Guard Security and had retired from Life of Georgia after 25 years. He had received a certificate in law enforcement science and criminal justice from the International Academy of Criminology and received the Commemorative Legion of Honor medal from the American Police Hall of Fame. He was a Merchant Marines veteran, life member of the Lions Club and a member of Thomson First Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Richard W. Wells, Lawrenceville; a daughter, Patricia W. Parris, Thomson; a brother, William Wells, Sylvania; and five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Pallbearers will be Logan Marshall, Riley Stamey, John Holliman, John Hathaway, Walter Mock and Bob Smith.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of McDuffie County and Thomson law enforcement agencies and employees of Well-Guard Security.

Friends may call at the residence of Patricia Parris, 2583 Fish Dam Road, or at Beggs Funeral Home, Thomson.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today the funeral home.

Mrs. Rosa Berry

Mrs. Rosa P. Berry, 66, of 1017 Stevens Creek Road, died Thursday, June 4, 1998, at West Lake Manor.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Elliott Sons Funeral Home, Telfair Street, with the Rev. Allan J. McDonald officiating. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery.

Mrs. Berry, a native of Barletta, Italy, was a homemaker and a member of St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Deanna B. Kitchens, Elizabeth Burch and Lucia Holmes, all of Augusta; a brother, Vincent Pastoressa, France; two sisters, Maria Pastoressa and Lucia Pastoressa, both of Naples, Italy; and six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Pallbearers will be Bobby Blackstone, Joshua Kitchens, Tony Kitchens, Mark Angelisanti, Daniel Rigdon and Keith Jenkins.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home with a vigil for the deceased at 7 p.m.

Judge Andrew Birdsong Jr.

Appeals court judge

LaGRANGE, Ga. -- Judge Andrew Willis Birdsong Jr., 73, of 100 Lakeshore Drive, died Saturday, June 6, 1998, at Piedmont Hospital, Atlanta.

The funeral will be at 4 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church on the Square. Burial will be private.

Judge Birdsong, a native of LaGrange, was appointed to the Georgia State Court of Appeals in 1977.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Cliatt Birdsong; three daughters, Nancy Birdsong Whitford, Augusta, Elizabeth Birdsong Vann, Bluffton, S.C., and Katherine Birdsong Candler, Atlanta; and four grandchildren.

NORTH AUGUSTA -- Mrs. Joan E. Brooks, of 6 Bradley Court, died Thursday, June 4, 1998, at University Hospital, Augusta.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Old Storm Branch Baptist Church with the Rev. Nathaniel Irvin officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memory Gardens, Graniteville.

Mrs. Brooks, a native of Washington, D.C., was a former resident of Paterson, N.J. She had retired from Kimberly Clark as a payroll clerk. She was a member of Old Storm Branch Baptist Church, where she was a member of the usher board, the Gospel Choir and served as financial advisor to the Stormettes Girls Club.

Survivors include her husband, Manchester Brooks Jr.; a daughter, Sharon A. Brooks Graham, North Augusta; her father, Joseph Linney, Paterson; and her mother, Anna Linney, North Augusta.

Pallbearers will be Ernest Quiller, Montrice Mims, Richard Jones, Willie J. Griffin, Maurice Thomas and Frank Baskett.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. today at Williams Funeral Home, Augusta.

Mr. Carvil Chalk

DuPont retiree

Mr. Carvil J. Chalk, 78, of 2308 Mura Drive, died Friday, June 5, 1998, at Columbia Augusta Medical Center.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Overcomers Outreach Church, Martinez, with the Rev. Roger Bennett officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Mr. Chalk, a native of Union County, had retired from DuPont as a maintenance worker. He was a member of Overcomers Outreach Church, where he was an adult Bible teacher, a deacon, usher and greeter, a Royal Ambassador leader, Sunday school director and training director, a Soul Winner, served on the telephone ministry and vacation Bible school volunteer. He was an Army veteran of World War II, where he received three commendations, the American Theatre Service Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.

His family said he was a very loving family man and friend ready to serve his Lord, his church and any who had a need.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Sammons Chalk; a son, Dan Eugene Chalk, Cleveland, Ga.; and two grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Overcomers Outreach Center, SBC, 3850 Washington Road, La Petite Plaza 3B, Martinez, GA 30907.

Friends may call at Overcomers Outreach Center.
