Mr. John Newton

Retired farmer

Announcement dated June 13, 1998

SYLVANIA, Ga. -- Mr. John W. Newton, 53, of 1812 Hiltonia Creek Road, died Tuesday, June 9, 1998, at Screven County Hospital.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Sylvania Funeral Home with the Rev. E. Kelly officiating. Burial will be in Beech Branch Cemetery.

Mr. Newton, a native of Screven County, had retired as a farmer. He was a member of St. Paul Baptist Church, Girard.

Survivors include his wife, Thelma Newton; two sons, Earnest Youman, Sylvania, and Robert L. Youman, Pasadena, Calif.; two daughters, Patricia Newton and Gracie Johnson, both of Sylvania; seven brothers, William Newton Jr., Ivvin Jackson and Calvin Stewart, all of Sylvania, Willie Arthur Newton, St. Petersburg, Fla., Ricky F. Newton, Augusta, Johnnie Jackson, Tampa, Fla., and James Sello, New Jersey; six sisters, Annie L. Newton, Gloria Newton Rountree and Ollie M. Houston, all of St. Petersburg, May Ruth Sello, Augusta, Gloria Mae Covington, Tampa, and Erma Mims, Sylvania; and 11 grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be his brothers and nephews.

Friends may call at the funeral home.

Mr. Crawford Long Pilcher

Former Georgia senator

Announcement dated June 13, 1998

WARRENTON, Ga. -- Mr. Crawford Long Pilcher, of Johnson Street, died Friday, June 12, 1998, in Macon.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at Warrenton First United Methodist Church with the Revs. Lee Branham and Mabel Foster officiating. Burial will be in Sallie Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Pilcher, a native of Warren County, was a graduate of Emory University and a member of the Gridiron Society and Chi Phi Fraternity. He was admitted to the Georgia Bar Association in 1933 and practiced law in Warrenton for several years.

He served on the Warrenton city council and as city attorney. He was elected to the Georgia General Assembly in 1937 and served three legislative terms. He served in the state Attorney General's office from 1944 to 1945 and was elected to the Georgia state senate in 1949, where he served as Senate floor leader. He was appointed to the Public Service Commission in 1952, was named commission chairman in 1971 and retired from public service in 1972.

After retirement Mr. Pilcher was chairman of the Board of Secura. He was a former member of the Stone Mountain Memorial Association and the Jekyll Island Authority, and was a former president of the Warrenton Kiwanis Club. He was a member of Warrenton First United Methodist Church, where he had served as chairman of steward board.

Survivors include two daughters, Katherine Pilcher Dodson and Suzanne Pilcher Moody, both of Macon; a sister, Miriam Pilcher Rountree, Metter; and six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Pallbearers will be S.D. Pearson, Purnell Davis, Al Kitchens, Emile Carr, A.S. May, Julian Hinesley, Charlie DeBeaugrine and O.G. Hall.

Memorials may be made to Warrenton First United Methodist Church, 303 E. Main St., Warrenton, GA 30828.

The family will receive friends after the service.

Mrs. Bertie Quattlebaum

Retired seamstress

WAGENER -- Mrs. Bertie Mae Swartz Quattlebaum, 83, of 160 J.B. Swartz Road, died Thursday, June 11, 1998, at Palmetto Baptist Hospital.

The funeral will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at Bethcar Baptist Church with the Rev. Chris Addy officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Quattlebaum, a native of Aiken County, had retired as a seamstress and textile worker. She was a member of Bethcar Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Eula Health Sunday School Class.

Survivors include a daughter, Sandra Q. Poole, Wagener; a brother, Carlton ``Buddy'' Swartz, Wagener; four sisters, Evelyn Morgan and Lillian S. Kirby, both of Columbia, Kathleen Swartz, Wagener, and Maxine S. Carter, West Columbia; and two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Pallbearers will be Tommy Swartz, Jeffery Swartz, David Poole, Rodney Quattlebaum, Donnie Cook, Robyn Cowart, Steve Evans and Ronnie Sloan.

Friends may call at Blizzard Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Rev. Charlie Reese Sr.

Retired factory employee

GARFIELD, Ga. -- The Rev. Charlie Reese Sr., 70, of Route 1, died Wednesday, June 10, 1998, at Bulloch Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. today at Mount Carmel Baptist Church, Millen, with the Rev. Matthew Davis officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The Rev. Reese, a native of Jenkins County, had retired as a factory employee. He was an ordained Baptist minister and pastor of Sand Hills Baptist Church.

Survivors include six sons, Charlie Reese Jr. and John Reese, both of Swainsboro, George Reese and James Reese, both of Garfield, Jerry Reese, Statesboro, and Bobby Jones, Vero Beach, Fla.; three daughters, Bessie Cooper, Millen, Rosa Robinson, Twin City, and Juanita McGee, Canoochee; three brothers, Robert Reese and Edward Reese, both of Millen, and Willis Reese, Hiltonia; two sisters, Annie Oglesby, Millen, and Josephine Ford, Garfield; and 40 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

James A. Kirkland Mortuary, Millen, is in charge of arrangements.

Miss Nelle Rosier

Retired teletype operator

Miss Nelle McKenzie Rosier, 95, of 2530 Central Ave., died Thursday, June 11, 1998, at her residence.

The funeral will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at First Christian Church with the Rev. C. Don Manning officiating. Burial will be in Rosier Family Cemetery.

Miss Rosier, a native of Augusta, had retired from Western Union as a teletype operator and was a member of First Christian Church, where she was a member of the Dorcas Sunday School Class.

Survivors include three nephews, Roy Rosier, Beech Island, Andrew R. Cato Jr., Hephzibah, and Dewey Cato, Augusta; and five nieces, Valeria Brown, Edna Hooper and Celia Mackey, all of Mobile, Ala., Mary Freeman, Augusta, and Jeanette Schatz, Birmingham, Ala.

Pallbearers will be Barry Rosier, Steve McDade, Andrew Cato III, Mark Rosier, Michael Rosier and Jack Barrett.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Platt's Funeral Home, Crawford Avenue.

NORTH AUGUSTA -- Mr. Trishawn R. Williams, of 401 Main St., died Monday, June 8, 1998, at St. Mary's Hospital, Fredericksburg, Va.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Trinity Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, Augusta, with the Rev. J. Ronzell Maness officiating. Burial will be in Mount Olive Memorial Gardens, Augusta.

Mr. Williams, a native of Augusta, was a barber at Midtown Barber Shop, Washington, and a former employee of Production Hair Studio, Augusta. He was a graduate of Bladenburg Barber School, Bladenburg, Md. He was a member of Full Gospel African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, Temple Hill, Md.

The family said Trishawn's inspiring desire was to show his family that with strength and hope in Jesus' name, life can be just what you make of it.

Survivors include his parents, Veronica K. Williams and Trio Williams; two brothers, Denzel Ward and Trijuan Ward; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ronald E. Williams and Mr. and Mrs. Ulysses Kendrick, all of Augusta, and Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Williams, Savannah; his paternal great-grandmother, Wilhelmenia Ford, Washington; and his paternal great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ulysses Kendrick Sr., Sparta, Ga.

Mrs. Tutt, a native of Columbia County, was a member of Walnut Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Glenn Tutt and Eugene Few, both of Augusta; a daughter, Lurline Burns, Augusta; three stepsons, Kelvin Tutt and Brisco Tutt, both of Augusta, and Michael Tutt, Lithonia; and nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Smith, a native of Augusta, had retired from Shapiro Packing Co. She was a member of Central Christian Church, where she was a member of the Golden Agers.

Survivors include her husband, Prentiss ``Smitty'' Smith; a stepson, Robert D. Smith, Nevada City, Calif.; a stepbrother, Herbert Redd, Augusta; and three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Claire Shiver

Mrs. Claire Langley Shiver, of 1405 Springfield Court, died Friday, June 12, 1998, at her residence.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church of Augusta with the Rev. Roger Murchison officiating. Burial will be in Westover Memorial Park.

Mrs. Shiver, a native of Orangeburg, S.C., was a registered nurse, a graduate of the Barrett School of Nursing and a member of the University Hospital Alumni. She had retired from Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center and was an Army veteran of World War II. She held the rank of first lieutenant and is listed on the Women In Military Service For America Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Augusta, where she was a member of the Golden Circle Bible Class.

Survivors include a son, David Mallory Shiver, Evans; a daughter, Mary Brinson Dunkirk, Long Island, N.Y.; and four grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Patrick G. Smith Sr., John Goodwin, John Groves, Ben Watts, John Bodie Sr. and James Siples.

Mr. John Willie Anfield, of 1002 Kent St., died Monday, June 8, 1998, at St. Joseph Hospital.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Second Antioch Baptist Church, Burke County, with the Rev. William Bussey officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Anfield, a native of Burke County, had retired from Thermal Ceramics after more than 38 years of service. He was a member and trustee of Antioch Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Young Children's Union Aid Society.

Survivors include his wife, Sallie Anfield; four sons, Frank Anfield and Bernard Anfield, both of Minnesota, Wilfred Anfield, Warner Robins, and Isaac Anfield, Augusta; a daughter, Cecelia Travis, Waynesboro; a sister, Savella Hall, Waynesboro; and seven grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Maurice Jones, Melvin Herrington, Willie Walker, Kenneth Davis, Sebastian Anfield and Allen Pryor.
