Mrs. Sarah Chiera

Announcement dated June 14, 1998

Mrs. Sarah M. Chiera, 51, of 3430 Peach Orchard Road, died Friday, June 12, 1998, at University Hospital.

The funeral will be at 4 p.m. Monday at Elliott Sons Funeral Home, Telfair Street, with the Rev. Bobby Coleman officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Mrs. Chiera, a native of Augusta, was a cashier at Kmart. She was a member of Cornerstone Fellowship Church.

Survivors include her husband, David R. Chiera Sr.; two sons, David R. Chiera Jr., Augusta, and Tony Chiera, North Augusta; her father, Robert Griner, Augusta; a brother, Toni Griner, Augusta; two sisters, Pat Ezzyk and Wanda Corley, both of Augusta; and four grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Michael Willis, Kenneth Ezzyk, Tommy Coats, Claude Cooper, Ted Stewart and Mark McDonald.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mr. Henry Cheely Jr.

Truck driver

AIKEN -- Mr. Henry Cheely Jr., 63, of 791 Sommers Ave. N.E., died Thursday, June 11, 1998, at Kentwood Nursing Home, Augusta.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Hargett Bryant Funeral Home, Burlington, N.C., with the Rev. Steve Oldham officiating.

Mr. Cheely, a native of Warrenton, Ga., was a truck driver and an Army veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include a son, Kevin Chelley, Atlanta; a daughter, Kim Chelley, New York; a brother, Jim Cheely, Burlington; and a sister, Dorothy Crump.

G.L. Brightharp and Sons Mortuary is in charge of local arrangements.

Mr. Harold Camp

DuPont retiree

Announcement dated June 14, 1998

AIKEN -- Mr. Harold Franklin Camp, 70, of 509 Gilbert St., died Saturday, June 13, 1998, at his residence.

The funeral will be at 4 p.m. Monday at South Aiken Church of God with the Revs. Bruce Fox, Joseph R. Camp and David Holdman officiating. Burial will be in Aiken Memorial Park.

Mr. Camp, a native of Enunclaw, Wash., had lived in Aiken since 1948. He had retired from operations at DuPont Savannah River Plant. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of South Aiken Church of God, where he was a member of the Men of Action.

Survivors include his wife, Beaulah Esther Osbon Camp; a son, Joseph Arthur Camp, Aiken; two daughters, Patricia Ann Hopkins, Aiken, and Mary Jane Bruce, Anderson; a sister, Jewell E. Camp, Aiken; and six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Greg Buffett, Eddie Bell, Charles Matthews, Alex Osbon, Rick Osbon and Tony Rickard.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Ambassadors Sunday School Class of South Aiken Church of God.

Mr. Rufus Bradberry

Milliken Co. retiree

ABBEVILLE, S.C. -- Mr. Rufus Willie Bradberry, 71, of Route 3, died Thursday, June 11, 1998, at Meadow Haven Nursing Care, Rock Hill.

The funeral was at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 13, at Southside Baptist Church with the Rev. Earl Hartley officiating. Burial was in the Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.

Mr. Bradberry, a native of Abbeville, had retired from Milliken Co. as a forklift mechanic. He was a member of Southside Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Lucille Elrod Bradberry; a son, Mark Jay Bradberry, Marietta, Ga.; three daughters, Victoria B. Goodbar, Rock Hill, Rhonda B. Harman, Laurens, and Barbara B. Boddie, McCormick; four brothers, E.H. Bradberry, Virginia Beach, Va., Vernon Bradberry, North Augusta, Clarence Bradberry, Calhoun Falls, and Ansel Bradberry, Abbeville; two sisters, Clara B. Hicks, Anderson, and Doris B. Murdock, Belton; and 12 grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Patient Care Fund c/o Rock Hill Dialysis Clinic, 2115 Ebenezer Road, Rock Hill, SC 29732.

Ms. Laura Berry

Ms. Laura Garrison Berry, of 2402 Shadowood Drive, died Thursday, June 11, 1998, at University Hospital.

The funeral will be at noon Tuesday at Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. J.R. Hatney officiating. Burial will be in Walker Memorial Park.

Ms. Berry, a native of Hahira, Ga., was a graduate of Abraham Baldwin College and Augusta State University, and she was a registered nurse at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center. She was a member of Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church, where she served on the health ministry.

Survivors include a son, Michael Garrison, Augusta; a daughter, Kimberly Garrison, Augusta; her parents, Cleveland Garrison Sr. and Flossie Garrison, Hahira; three brothers, Cleveland Garrison Jr., Augusta, Emanuel Garrison, Atlanta, and Robert Garrison, Michigan; a sister, Marilyn Abraham, North Augusta; and three grandchildren.

Mrs. Ellen Thompson

HARLEM -- Mrs. Ellen D. Thompson, 78, of Highway 78, died Sunday, June 14, 1998, at McDuffie County Hospital, Thomson.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Silver Run Baptist Church with the Revs. Al Gilliand and Ernest Sikes officiating. Burial will be in Harlem Memorial Cemetery.

Mrs. Thompson, a longtime Columbia County resident, was a member of Silver Run Baptist Church.

Survivors include five sons, Van W. Inglett and Runy Whitaker, both of Augusta, Edward H. Whitaker, Altamonte Springs, Fla., Ervin S. Whitaker, Woodbridge, Va., and Edwin Wayne Whitaker, Thomson; four daughters, Vivian W. Mitchell, Augusta, Velma W. Sager-Mathias, West Virginia, Venessa W. McCorkle, Thomson, and Dillie W. Hollimon, Dearing; and 26 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Zack Mitchell, Phil McCorkle, Ron McCorkle, Matt Inglett, Chris Hollimon and Steven Hollimon.

Mrs. Ruth Swank

GARDEN CITY BEACH, S.C. -- Mrs. Ruth Haymes Swank, 75, died Friday, June 12, 1998, at National Health Care.

Services for Mrs. Swank will be held privately.

Mrs. Swank was a graduate of Penn State University and the University of South Carolina, where she was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa honor society and a charter member of the Beta Phi Mu Library Science Honor Society. She had retired from Midlands Technical College, Columbia, as a librarian. She was a veteran of the Navy Women Accepted for Volunteer Service and volunteered with United Service Organizations as an entertainer.

Survivors include a son, John A. Swank Jr., North Myrtle Beach; a daughter, Jan A. Alexander, Augusta; a brother, Roy E. Haynes, El Sobrante, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

Mr. Lewis Purvis

THOMSON -- Mr. Lewis ``Doc'' Purvis, 76, of 3982 Wrens Highway, died Saturday, June 13, 1998, at Emanuel County Medical Center.

The funeral will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Sweetwater Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike Sutphin officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Purvis, a native of Warren County, was a longtime Thomson resident. He had retired as a carpenter. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of Sweetwater Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Frances Purvis; and a brother, Pete Purvis, Stapleton.

Pallbearers will be Joey Purvis, Sammy Purvis, Jimmy Smith, Wilbur Purvis, Jimmy Wood and Don Reeves.

Mr. James Pilgrim

THOMSON -- Mr. James Cleveland Pilgrim, 69, of 134 Davis Road, died Saturday, June 13, 1998, at his residence.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at Young Memorial United Methodist Church with the Revs. Katie Strals and Phil Pilgrim officiating. Burial will be in Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Pilgrim, a native of McDuffie County, had retired from Kingsley Co. as a supervisor after 40 years of service. He was a member the Raysville Boat Club. He was an Army veteran and a member of Young Memorial United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Allean Pilgrim; two sons, Heath Pilgrim, Thomson, and Jimmy Hardy, Aiken; a daughter, Julie Pilgrim Henderson, Macon; a stepson, Buddy Randolph, Thomson; two stepdaughters, Delores Gray and Janet Shelton, both of Thomson; a brother, Julian Pilgrim, Aiken; two sisters, Lottie Sheffield and Vera Valiruso, both of Thomson; and three grandchildren and five step-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Curtis Smith, Ronnie Pilgrim, Randy Pilgrim, Buddy Parrish, Lorian English and Max Brooks.

Mrs. Selma Phillips

HEPHZIBAH -- Mrs. Selma ``Rose'' Phillips, 61, of 3520 Buckner Drive, died Friday, June 12, 1998, at University Hospital, Augusta.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. today at Mount Olive Memorial Gardens, Augusta, with the Rev. Marion Jay officiating.

Mrs. Phillips, a native of Kassel, Germany, had retired from BellSouth as a telephone operator after 23 years of service. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.

Her family said she loved people and baseball.

Survivors include her husband, Roy Phillips; two sons, William Michael Long, Angel Fire, N.M., and Fred L. Long, Hephzibah; a daughter, Doris A. Long, Detroit; and five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Poteet Funeral Home, Peach Orchard Road, is in charge of arrangements.
