Announcement dated June 17, 1998

ALLENDALE, S.C. -- The Rev. Dora Lee Mitchel James, 71, of 937 Nix Lane, died Friday, June 12, 1998, at Palmetto Baptist Memorial Hospital, Columbia.

The funeral will be at noon Wednesday at St. John Holiness Church with the Rev. B.L. Campbell officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Charleston.

Rev. James, a native of Allendale County, was a minister and a member of St. John Holiness Church.

Survivors include a sister, Anna Lanier, Allendale.

Cave Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Freddie Hogan

Mr. Freddie Hogan, 63, of 1430 Woodson Lane, died Wednesday, May 27, 1998, at University Hospital.

A memorial service will be at noon Wednesday at Antioch Baptist Church with the Rev. K.B. Martin officiating.

Mr. Hogan, a native of Augusta, was a day laborer and a member of Antioch Baptist Church.

Friends may call at Antioch Baptist Church or at C.A. Reid Sr. Memorial Funeral Home.

Ms. Brenda Grice

Announcement dated June 17, 1998

SALUDA, S.C. -- Ms. Brenda Joyce Grice, 46, of 913 W. Church St., died Sunday, June 14, 1998, at Self Memorial Hospital, Greenwood.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Saluda Baptist Church. Burial will be in West Travis Park Cemetery.

Ms. Grice, a native of Lexington County, worked for her family business at Ann's Dairy Bar. She was a graduate of Saluda High School and a member of Saluda Baptist Church.

Survivors include her parents, Charles F. Grice and Sallie Ann Havird Grice, Saluda; two brothers, Larry Douglas ``Doug'' Grice and Wayne Edwin Grice, both of Saluda; and three sisters, Beverly Ann Grice, Lillie Catherine ``Cathy'' Dillard and Jeri Evelyn Porter, all of Saluda.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 2711 Middleburg Drive Suite 312, Columbia, SC 29204.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Ramey Funeral Home.

D'ondra Goodwin

Announcement dated June 17, 1998

D'ondra Latrice Goodwin, infant daughter of Dion T. Goodwin and Chauntilena Goodwin of 2418 Crystal Court, died Saturday, June 13, 1998, at Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center.

The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Vernon Baptist Church with the Rev. Jonas Walker officiating. Burial will be in Walker Memorial Park.

Additional survivors include a brother, Javante Goodwin, Augusta; a sister, Khadijah Goodwin, Augusta; her grandparents, William Badger Sr. and Beatrice Badger, Augusta, James W. Goodwin Sr. and Deborah Goodwin, Hephzibah; her great-grandparents, Alphonso Smith and Joann Smith, Susie Goodwin and James Goodwin, all of Augusta; and great-great-grandparents, Siseretta DeVoe, Allendale, S.C., and Georgia Griffin, Edgefield, S.C.

Pallbearers will be Drew Pollard, Frank Pollard, Erick Gray, Thomas Heggs and Folliman Sturgis.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Williams Funeral Home.

Mr. Morgan Fitz

Photographer

Announcement dated June 17, 1998

Mr. Morgan Fitz, co-founder of Augusta photography studio Fitz-Symms Photographers, died Monday, June 15, 1998, at his residence.

There will be no services for Mr. Fitz.

Mr. Fitz, a native of Seattle, had lived in Augusta since 1945 and was a former resident of Alaska, Hawaii and New York. He was a graduate of Seattle schools, attended Washington State College and was a former employee of Acme News Picture Service, New York.

He was an Army Air Forces veteran of World War II, serving with the Eighth Air Force and the Ninth Air Force, Intelligence Department, in England. He retired from military service in 1945.

Mr. Fitz founded Morgan Fitz Photographers, Augusta, in 1945, and entered into partnership with local photographer Robert Symms in 1949.

In 1951 the firm received a contract to provide The Augusta Chronicle and Augusta Herald with photography services. The newspaper contracts ended in 1961, when the firm moved from the News Building to its Walton Way offices and was rechristened Fitz-Symms Photography.

Mr. Fitz worked on commercial photography contracts, while Mr. Symms handled portrait, school and wedding photography. Mr. Fitz retired from the firm in 1978.

``We have been friends since 1949. I went to work with him part time in October of '49 and worked with him full-time from 1950 until his retirement. He was an extremely kind, even-tempered man and we became partners as the years went by,'' said Mr. Symms, who still operates Fitz-Symms Studio. ``The name Fitz-Symms Photography will go on for generations.''

Mr. James Davis

Mr. James H. ``Jim'' Davis, 75, died Monday, June 15, 1998, at his residence.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Bellevue Memorial Gardens, Grovetown, with the Rev. Jack Fuqua officiating.

Mr. Davis, a native of Scotia, S.C., had retired from the Fort Gordon Exchange as supervisor of retail sales. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion. He was a member and past president of the Augusta Shrine Club and the Augusta Shrine Golf Unit, a past commander of the Legion of Honors, Alee Shrine Temple, and the Alee Shrine Temple, Savannah. He was a member of Richmond Lodge 412 Free and Accepted Masons, Hephzibah, and Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Post No. 205. He was a member of Green Meadows Golf and Country Club. He was a member of Burns Memorial United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Gwen Davis; two daughters, Sharon Owens, Lawrenceville, Ga., and Denise Minor, Evans; two brothers, Sidney A. Davis and Elmer Davis, Richmond Hill, Ga.; and two grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Myron Leggett, Ray Laywell, Jimmy Allen, Archie Black, Ernest Martin and Elwood Rabun.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Augusta Shrine Club.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Elliott Sons Funeral Home, Lumpkin Road.

Mr. James Crank Jr.

Mr. James Richard ``Jim'' Crank Jr., 57, died Sunday, June 14, 1998, at St. Joseph Hospital.

The funeral will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Elliott Sons Funeral Home, Lumpkin Road. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Mr. Crank, a native of Fort Benning, worked in flight operations at USAir. He was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a Catholic.

Survivors include his wife, Bridget Herndon Crank; two sons, James R. Crank III, Atlanta, and Justin Cade Crank, Augusta; three daughters, Kelly Tilley and Rebecca Perry, both of Augusta, and Melanie Crank, Atlanta; a brother, David Bruce Crank, Augusta; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mr. William Clements

AIKEN -- Mr. William ``Bill'' Thomas Clements, 70, of 22 Old Friar Road, died Monday, June 15, 1998, at his residence.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Thomas L. King Funeral Home, Martinez, with the Rev. Jerry Gay officiating. Burial will be in Bellevue Memorial Gardens, Grovetown.

Mr. Clements, a native of Aiken, had retired from Colonial Baking Co. as a baker. He was a member of New Vision Worship Center.

Survivors include a son, Jimmy Clements, Aiken; a daughter, Pat Tyler, Augusta; his mother, Ann G. Thigpen, Aiken; and four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be G.W. Sammons Sr., G.W. Sammons Jr., Billy Dickens, Earl Thigpen, Ricky Thigpen and Tim Malin.

Friends may call at the residence of Pat Tyler, 1208 Wood Valley Road, Augusta.

Mrs. Bernice Clear

RINGGOLD, Ga. -- Mrs. Bernice Beal Clear, 77, of 2670 Salem Valley Road, died Sunday, June 14, 1998, at Memorial Hospital, Chattanooga, Tenn.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Greenlawn Cemetery, Union Point, with the Rev. Lyle Allen officiating.

Mrs. Clear, a native of Morgan County, had lived in Ringgold for 25 years. She had retired from Fillauer Surgical Supplies after 30 years of service. She was a member of Salam Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Ernest Clear; two brothers, Henry C. Beal and Elma Beal, both of Sandersville; three sisters, Doris Ogletree, Union Point, Nina Stewart, White Plains, and Jewell Harper, Covington.

Pallbearers will be David Ogletree, Edward Ogletree, James Ogletree and Randy Ogletree.

Friends may call at McCommons Funeral Home, Greensboro.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mrs. Jennie Burton

MONCKS CORNER, S.C. -- Mrs. Jennie Lou Morgan Burton, 78, of 324 Pineland Lane, died Sunday, June 14, 1998, at Roper-Berkley Emergency Center.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Gilgal Baptist Church, Edgefield, with the Revs. Hal West and Lowell Clark officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Burton, a native of Edgefield County, was a graduate of South Carolina State Hospital School of Nursing and was a registered nurse. She had retired from South Carolina State Hospital as a nursing supervisor. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Moncks Corner.

Survivors include two daughters, Annegell B. McCants, Moncks Corner, and Peggy B. Gervais, Charleston; and five grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Gilgal Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.

Friends may call at the residence of Buddy Morgan, Penn Street, or at Edgefield Mercantile Funeral Home, Edgefield.
