William Sanders Jr.

William Sanders Jr., 55, died June 6 at St. Joseph's Hospital.

He was a native of Savannah. He was a 1961 graduate of Bech High School and received a diploma from Savannah Vocational Tech in heating, air conditioning and refrigeration. He attended Savannah State University, was a merchant seaman, and was the lead person in the maintenance department of the Chatham County Board of Education. He was a member of First Evergreen Baptist Church, where he served on the Trustees Board, was a member of the Brotherhood, Pothgress Lodge No. 11 F&AM, and was a Mason and deacon.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Jacqueline Sanders of Savannah; a daughter, Rheda Branch of Savannah; a son, William Sanders III of Savannah; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ulysses Hubbard of Savannah; two grandsons, Larenzo Williams and Antonio Davis, both of Savannah; two aunts, Lillie M. Roberts and Marie Perry, both of Savannah; an uncle, Henry Perry of Graysonville, Md.; and other relatives.

Madge G. Smiley

HINESVILLE -- Madge Groover Smiley, 97, died June 6 at Memorial Medical Center in Savannah.

She was a lifelong resident of Gum Branch. She was one of the first nurses aides hired at Liberty Memorial Hospital, and had worked at Wayne Memorial Hospital. She was a former school teacher at Providence and later at Fleming in Liberty County. She was a member of Gum Branch Baptist Church.

SURVIVORS: two daughters, Margaret S. and Betty S. Floyd, both of Hinesville; five sons, Joseph C. Smiley Sr. of Eatonton, James W. Smiley Sr., Robert L. Smiley and Hugh M. Smiley, all of Gum Branch, and David N. Smiley of Richmond Hill; 19 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

VISITATION: 7-9 p.m. today at Carter Funeral Home, Hinesville.

FUNERAL: 3 p.m. Monday at Gum Branch Baptist Church, burial in Gum Branch Cemetery.

Judy A. Spudville

METTER -- Judy Ann Spudville, 51, died June 4 at Memorial Medical Center.

She was a native of Metter and lived most of her life in Hammond, Ind. She was a homemaker.

SURVIVORS: two sons, John R. Spudville Jr. of Dresden, Tenn., and Ronald Spudville of Metter; two daughters, Karen and Katherine N. Spudville, both of Metter; her parents, Albert and Lorine Bonnema of Metter; two sisters Patty Fail of Metter and Dianna Owens of Twin City; and two grandchildren, Richard L. and Danielle N. Spudville, both of Dresden.

FUNERAL: 1 p.m. today at Kennedy-Morgan Funeral Homes, Kennedy Chapel, burial in Thains Cemetery.

Woodrow H. Williams

Woodrow Hyson "Woody" Williams, 85, died June 5 at Memorial Medical Center.

He was a native of Adrian. He was an alumnus of Berry College, where he worked as a brickmason helping to construct new buildings for the college and was instrumental in constructing the college's Water Wheel. He served as a photographer for the college. He opened a photography shop in Dublin prior to moving to Savannah in 1939, and owned Williams Photography Studio in Savannah for many years. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression. He was a member of Holy Church of God. He was a member of Kiwanis Club of Savannah; the Knights of Phthias, where he served as Grand Chandler; Optimist Club, the Bee Keepers Club, and the Pilots Club. His professional memberships included the Professional Photographers of Georgia.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Dorothy Allen Williams of Savannah; three sons, Dean and Benton Williams, both of Richmond Hill, and Robin Williams of Savannah; five daughters, Judy Cook, Nancy Lanier, Mary K. and Drusilla Williams, all of Savannah, and Marcia Herrera of Brunswick; a brother, Freeman Williams of Miami; a sister, Marie Rigby of Macon; and 21 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

VISITATION: 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. today at Hubert C. Baker Funeral Home.

FUNERAL: noon Monday at Holy Church of God, burial at 4 p.m. in Poplar Springs United Methodist Church Cemetery near Adrian.

Martha B. Anderson

STATESBORO -- Martha Bailey Anderson, 58, died June 6 at Bulloch Memorial Hospital.

She was a Bulloch County native and a Baptist.

SURVIVORS: a son, Wayne B. Anderson of Statesboro; a daughter, Diane NeSmith of Register; a sister, Frances J. Woodcock of Connecticut; and four grandchildren.

Andrew W. Birdsong Jr.

LA GRANGE -- Judge Andrew Willis Birdsong Jr., 73, died June 6 at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta.

He was a native of La Grange and was appointed to the Georgia State Court of Appeals in 1977 by then-Gov. George Busbee.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Elizabeth Cliatt Birdsong of La Grange; three daughters, Nancy B. Whitford of Augusta, Elizabeth B. Vann of Bluffton, and Katherine B. Candler of Atlanta; and four grandchildren, Gary M. Whitford Jr., Andrew W. Vann, Sarah E. Vann, and John S. Candler III.

FUNERAL: 4 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church on the Square in La Grange, burial will be private.

BRUNSWICK -- Rachael Madelyn Gilley, 77, died June 6.

She was a native of Coffee County and a homemaker.

SURVIVORS: a daughter, Linda F. Orr of Brunswick; three sons, Stanley E. Harkleroad of Ocean Springs, Miss., Robert Harkleroad of Pensacola, Fla., and Jerry J. Gilley III of Mobile, Ala.; a sister, Marceline Hall of Douglas; and a brother, Daniel R. Freeman of Douglas.

Funeral was in Salem Holiness Baptist Church Cemetery on Saturday.

Erma D. Johnston

BROOKLET -- Erma D. Johnston died June 5 at Brown's Nursing Home.

She was an Appling County native and lived in Savannah for 52 years before moving to Bulloch County in 1982. She was a retired registered nurse, and retired as a nursing administrator in 1979 from Memorial Medical Center in Savannah. She was a Baptist.

SURVIVORS: her husband, Kruger E. Johnston of Brooklet; three sons and a daughter-in-law, G. Epps Johnston and K. Edwards Johnston, both of Savannah, and Robert K. and Bea Johnston of Sylvania; a sister, Edith D. Tippins of Powder Springs; and several nieces and nephews.

A private graveside service was held Saturday in Bulloch Memorial Gardens.

James Henry Mumford, 54, died June 5 at St. Joseph's Hospital.

He was a native of Chatham County, where he attended public schools. He was a retired mechanic and a member of Mount Herman Baptist Church.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Dorothy Mumford of Savannah; a daughter, Cinthay Mumford of Savannah; a son, Norman Mumford of Savannah; three sisters, Elizabeth Johnson and Julia Bossie, both of Savannah, and Mattie P. Stroman of Washington, D.C.; two brothers, Robert C. Pinkston of Lakeland, Fla., and Willie Pinkston of Washington, D.C.; and seven grandchildren, a great-grandchild, and several other relatives and friends.

Dorothy B. Padgett

BLUFFTON -- Dorothy Victoria Bailey Padgett, 82, died June 6 at Life Care of Hilton Head.

She was a native of Okatie, S.C. She was a homemaker, and a member of Indian Hill Baptist Church in Bluffton since 1932. She was the widower of J. Samuel Padgett.

SURVIVORS: two daughters, Faye P. Calder of Ridgeville, S.C., and Dotty P. Coleman of Fernandina Beach, Fla.; two brothers, Woodrow Bailey of Burton, S.C., and Leo Bailey of Ladson, S.C.; two sisters, Marjorie Montanaro of Liverpool, N.Y., and Julia Graham of Evanston, Ind.; and eight grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.

VISITATION: 6-8 p.m. Monday at Sauls Funeral Home, Ridgeland.

Howard V. Seyller

HILTON HEAD ISLAND -- Howard Vernon Seyller, 87, died June 6 at Life Care Center of Hilton Head Island.

He was a native of Burlington, Ill. and formerly lived in Willow Lake Estates in Elgin, Ill. He was a lifelong member of Loyal Order of the Elks and received a 50-year membership plaque from the Loyal Order of the Moose. He was the widower of Elsie Nordlund Seyller.

SURVIVORS: a daughter, Barbara A. Rawden of Hilton Head Island; a brother, Russell Seyller of St. Charles, Ill.; two sisters, Adeline Mengeling of Hampshire, Ill., and Shirley Johansen of Geneva, Ill.; two grandchildren, Stephanie and Christian Rawden, both of Reading, Pa.; and 11 nieces and nephews, and other relatives.

Services will be held at a later date at his home in Elgin.

She was a native of Chicago and a resident of Savannah since 1989. She retired as a clerical supervisor in 1975 after 47 years with Monumental Life Insurance Co.

SURVIVORS: two brothers, Walter Varges of Savannah and Ted Varges of El Toro, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews, including Judy Mahoney of Savannah and Jan Peters of Crown Point, Ind.

She was a Wayne County native, a Florida resident for 16 years and a former legal secretary. She was a member of Middleburg First Baptist Church and served on various committees.

SURVIVORS: her husband, Joseph Puhl of Middleburg; two daughters, Kristina Puhl of Jacksonville and Kelsey Puhl of Middleburg; her parents, Leslie and Geraldine Lloyd of Jesup; a sister, Mary L. Rankin of Brunswick; a brother, Michael S. Lloyd of Jesup; a nephew, Shannon Rankin of Blackshear; a niece, Susanne Rankin of Valdosta; and four grandchildren.

Dale Matthew Johnson Jr., 45, died June 6 at Hospice Savannah.

He was a lifelong resident of Savannah, a graduate of Jenkins High School and earned a B.S. degree in architectural engineering at Southern Technical Institute. He began Dale Johnson Construction Co. in 1976. He was a past president of the Home Builders Association of Savannah and a member of the State Board of Home Builders Associations. He was a member and deacon of First Christian Church, a past president of First Christian Church MenÕs Club and had served on numerous church committees. He was the coach of Dale JohnsonÕs Southside Raiders, Twisters Baseball Team.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Jan Hoover Johnson of Savannah; a daughter, Abby McColl Johnson of Savannah; a son, Matthew Pritchard Johnson of Savannah; a brother and sister-in-law, Mark and Vicki Johnson of Savannah; and several other relatives.
