Joe Presley

BAXLEY - Joe Presley, 88, died June 7 at Appling Health Care System.

He was a native of Whitfield County, a longtime resident of Appling County and a farmer. He was a member of Harmony Baptist Church.

SURVIVORS: four daughters, Law Wanda Altman, JoAnn Hunter, Janet Orvin and Janice Sellers, all of Baxley; a son, Jaunice Presley of Baxley; a sister, Gertrude James of Axson; and 19 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and several other relatives.

VISITATION: 6-9 p.m. today at Swain Funeral Home, Baxley.

FUNERAL: 2 p.m. Tuesday at Swain Funeral Home, burial in Baxley Graveyard Cemetery.

James N. Jent

FITZGERALD - James N. "Jimmy" Jent, 77, died June 6 at home.

He was a native of Kentucky, lived in Jacksonville, Fla., and was a resident of Fitzgerald the past 15 years. He was an Army veteran of World War II and attended the Assembly of God of Church in Fitzgerald. He was the widower of Lanner Tanner Jent.

SURVIVORS: two sons, James E. Jent of Glenwood and David N. Jent of Ambrose; three daughters, Jimmie Faye Cottingham and Wanda L. Miller, both of Brunswick, and Patsy Frazier of Fitzgerald; and 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

VISITATION: 6 p.m. today at Crosby Funeral Home, Alma.

FUNERAL: 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wesley Chapel Congregational Methodist Church, burial in Wolfpit Cemetery.

BAXLEY - Hazel Sellers Varnadore, 70, died June 7 at Southeast Georgia Regional Medical Center.

She was a native of Appling County and lived in Bacon County the past 50 years. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.

SURVIVORS: her husband, Lonnie E. Varnadore Jr. of Alma; three sons, David W. Varnadore Sr. and Danny Varnadore, both of Alma, and Dr. Greg Varnadore of Toccoa; two brothers, Richard and Lamar Sellers, both of Baxley; and six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

JESUP - Verdon Westberry, 67, died June 7.

He was born in Wayne County and was a retired employee of Walker LP Gas and Concrete Co. He was the widower of Ernie Westberry.

Westberry of Jesup; a sister, Aline Vaughn of Jesup; three brothers, Thomas and Avery Westberry, both of Jesup, and Lonnie Westberry of Odum; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Jack M. Parker

ST. SIMONS ISLAND - Jack Milo Parker, 73, died June 7 at home.

He was born in Collins and was a former mayor. He was a graduate of Claxton High School and was named to the Silver Anniversary Best Athlete of the 1st half century team. He attended the University of Georgia and was a member of Lamda Chi Alpha Fraternity. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He worked with Lever Brothers in Atlanta before returning to Tattnall County where he joined his father at J.H. Parker Oil Co. He purchased an Amoco Oil Jobbership in 1963. He lived in Vidalia for many years and was a member of the Church of the Annunciation Episcopal Church and served as senior warder. He was a past president of Vidalia Country Club and a member of Sea Island Golf Club.

SURVIVORS: a daughter, Pamela P. Bugg of Appling County; two sons, Gregory M. Parker of Savannah and Patrick B. Parker of St. Simons Island; and four grandchildren.

FUNERAL: 11 a.m. Wednesday at Christ Church on St. Simons Island, burial in Christ Churchyard Cemetery.

Maxwell W. Lippitt Jr.

PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. - Maxwell Walthour Lippitt Jr., 69, died June 6 at home.

He was born in Savannah and was a longtime resident of Bay County and Panama City Beach. He graduated in 1952 from the University of Georgia with a bachelor of science in chemistry and in 1955 from Georgia Tech with a bachelor of science in electrical engineering. He served in the Air Force and then went to work for the General Electric Corp. for four years in the fields of large steam turbine generator instrumentation and rocket engine instrumentation. He joined NASA Langley Research Center where he helped establish the first worldwide tracking range for the Mercury spacecraft. In 1962 he moved to NASA Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston where he developed biomedical and atmospheric instrumentation for Mercury, Gemini and Apollo spacecrafts.

He moved to Panama City Beach in 1971 where he began working as a biomedical instrumentation engineer at Ocean Simulation Facility of the Coastal System Station. Throughout his career he was awarded no less than 23 patents during his employ at GE, NASA and the Department of the Navy.

SURVIVORS: two daughters, Ashby L. Hunnicutt of Panama City Beach and Peggy Masters of Saxe, Va.; two sons, Thomas Lippitt of Merritt Island, Fla., and Maxwell Lippitt III of Orlando, Fla.; two sisters, Ashby Angell and Anita Clay, both of Savannah; a brother, Devereaux Lippitt of New Bern, N.C.; and seven grandchildren.

Thelma Evans Harden, 81, died June 8 at Westview Nursing Home.

She was a native of Orangeburg, S.C., and retired from Memorial Medical Center. She was a member of Savannah First Seventh Day Adventist Church for 52 years. At the church, she was a deaconess for many years and taught in the Sabbath school for three years.

SURVIVORS: two sons, Aubrey L. Harden Jr. of Port Wentworth and Arnold N. Harden of Pooler; a daughter, Gloria Cheaves of Savannah; a sister, Catherine Shipes of Williston, S.C.; nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Raymond J. Wells

THOMSON - Raymond Jesse Wells, 70, died June 5 at McDuffie County Hospital.

He was born in Screven County. He was retired owner and chief executive officer of Well Guard Security and retired from Life of Georgia after 25 years. He had been in the merchant marine and was a member of Thomson First Baptist Church in Thomson. He received a certificate in law enforcement science and criminal justice from the International Academy of Criminology and received the Commemorative Legion of Honor Medal from the American Police Hall of Fame. He was a member of the Lions Club.

SURVIVORS: a daughter, Patricia W. Parris of Thomson; a son, Richard W. Wells of Lawrenceville; a brother, William B. Wells of Sylvania; five grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Graveside service was held Sunday in Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens.
