Bessie L. Wilson

METTER - Mrs. Bessie L. Wilson, 73, died June 8 at Candler County Hospital.

She was born in Candler County and spent most of her life in the county. She was a homemaker, a Baptist and the widow of Herman Wilson.

SURVIVORS: a son, Bill Wilson of Metter; a sister, Beulah Hooks of Metter; and several nieces and nephews.

VISITATION: 6-9 p.m. today at Kennedy-Morgan Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel.

FUNERAL: 11 a.m. Wednesday at Kennedy-Morgan Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel, burial in Rosemary Cemetery.

Henry H. Parmelee

HILTON HEAD ISLAND - Henry H. Parmelee, 90, died June 5 at Hilton Head Island Medical Center and Clinics.

He was a native of Paterson, N.J., and served as a commission officer in the 17th Airborne Division. He retired from Chase Bank.

SURVIVOR: his wife, Helen Parmelee of Hilton Head Island.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at St. Luke's Episcopal Church.

James M. Emerson

LYONS - James Mattauer Emerson, 88, died June 8 at Candler Hospital in Savannah.

He was born in Glynn County and attended the Presbyterian Church of Vidalia and Faith Baptist Church of Lyons. He was a retired electrician and a member of Local 508.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Kate Eason Emerson of Lyons; two daughters, Carter E. Guy of Gainesville, Fla., and Patricia Repak of Lyons; two stepdaughters, Patsy Campbell of Midville and Gail Dykes of Vidalia; two stepsons, Danny and Mitchell Tootle, both of Darien; and several grandchildren and stepgrandchildren.

Memorial services and internment will be held at a later date.

Lester A. Hendrix

Lester Antonio Hendrix, 37, drowned June 7 in an accident.

He was a native of Savannah and a 1978 graduate of Savannah High School. He was a member of Christian Revival Center and an Air Force veteran. He was a musician and played for New Hope Baptist Church, Zion White Bluff Baptist Church and Bethesda Early Baptist Church.

SURVIVORS: a son, Lester A. Hendrix Jr. of Savannah; his parents, Clifford and Mary Hendrix of Savannah; two brothers, Ernest C. and Tom D. Hendrix, both of Savannah; two sisters, 1st Sgt. Mathurita Lovett of Tampa, Fla., and Mary L. Scruggs of Savannah; a niece, Natasha Lovett of Tampa; a nephew, Marvin I. Scruggs of Savannah; several aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives.

Della J. Tucker

STATESBORO - Mrs. Della J. Tucker, 83, died June 7 at home.

She was born in Register and lived in Statesboro most of her life. She retired from Brooks Instruments and was a member of First United Methodist Church.

SURVIVORS: a son and daughter-in-law, John W. and Vickie Tucker, both of Atlanta; a sister, Carole Collins of Savannah; a granddaughter, Taylor Nicole Tucker of Atlanta; and several nieces and nephews.

Perry K. Cannon

RICHMOND HILL - Perry Allen Kellan Cannon, 4, accidentally drowned June 6 at Kings Ferry Landing on the Ogeechee River.

He had lived in Rincon Hill for three months and attended Chevis Oaks Baptist Church in Savannah.

SURVIVORS: his mother and stepfather, Christine and David Champagne of Richmond Hill; his father and stepmother, Jimmy and Maggi Cannon of Richmond Hill; two half brothers, Justin A. Cannon of Bloomingdale and Michael Burnsed of Metter; his maternal grandmother and stepgrandfather, Loretta and Derrell Lynn of Savannah; his paternal grandfather and stepgrandmother, Jimmy L. and Pamela Cannon of Richmond Hill; his maternal great-grandmother, Barbara Hafey of Savannah; his paternal great-grandparents, Hinton Starling of Pembroke, Willie and Mary Jackson of Townsend and Addie Mae Cannon of Bloomingdale; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

George Iocovozzi

Well-known Savannah businessman George "Archie" Iocovozzi, 71, died June 8 at the home of his son Joseph Iocovozzi after a long battle with heart disease and Parkinson's disease.

He was born in Frankfort, N.Y., and owned and operated several businesses in Savannah since 1951. He also was active in state and local political circles.

He joined the Navy in 1944 and served as a flight engineer in Pensacola, Fla. After then joining the Air Force, he was stationed at Savannah's Chatham Field in 1949 as a B-29 crew chief for the 2nd Bomb Wing of the Mighty 8th Air Force. He served several tours of duty in Europe and the Arctic Circle.

His Savannah business ventures included a construction company for single-family houses, cocktail lounges, liquor stores and restaurants. In 1961, Iocovozzi opened Coin Operated Amusement Devices, currently operated by his son Joseph.

Iocovozzi served on the campaign staffs of former Savannah Mayor John Rousakis and former Chatham County Commission Chairman Bill Stephenson. He was active in the formation of Political Action Committees (PACs) in Savannah. In 1979, then-Gov. George Busbee appointed him a lieutenant colonel, aide de camp on the Governor's Staff.

As a young athlete, he lettered in two high school sports, played semi-professional football, and boxed in the Navy. He was Naval Fleet Boxing Champion for the South Atlantic and Caribbean fleets in 1946.

He was a founding member of the Italian Heritage Society. He also had been president of the Savannah Italian Club, a member of the board of directors of the Junior Chamber of Commerce and the Savannah Jaycees, a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus and the St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee. He was a former Boy Scouts Scoutmaster and a member of the Order of the Arrow and St. James Catholic Church. He also was an active supporter of Savannah State University.

His body will be donated to Medical College of Georgia for research in the search for a cure to Parkinson's disease.

SURVIVORS: his wife of 46 years, Celeste DeMarco Iocovozzi of Savannah; five children, Kevin Louis Iocovozzi, Kim Leon Iocovozzi, Joseph Patrick Iocovozzi and Beth Buttimer, all of Savannah, and Karen Marie Jones of Boston; three sisters and a brother, Grace Petrilli, Flora Long, Rose Palemeri and John Iocovozz of Frankfort; 12 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

MEMORIAL MASS: 4: 30 p.m. June 14 at St. James Catholic Church.

REMEMBRANCES: Hospice Savannah or a Parkinson's disease support group.

Dorothy R. Anderson

ELLABELL - Dorothy Ray Liska Anderson, 66, died June 8 at home under Savannah hospice care.

She was born in Bloomington, Ill. She was co-owner of Androski's Fine Meats before retiring. She was a Baptist.

SURVIVORS: three daughters, Debra A. Odom and Cheryl A. Waters, both of Pembroke, and Brenda A. Cannon of Savannah; a son, Ray Anderson of Ellabell; two sisters, Martha Peak of San Antonio and Katherine Jones of Carlinville, Ill.; and four grandchildren.

VISITATION: beginning at 3 p.m. today at Morrison Funeral Home in Pembroke.

Bob Buffington

CUMMING - Bob Buffington, 76, died June 8.

He was a native of Atlanta. He was a deacon of Cumming First Baptist Church and taught the Men's Sunday School for many years. He was owner of Dresco Mechanical Contractor Inc. for 30 years. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, stationed in the Philippines for 27 months. He retired to Lake Lanier in 1977.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Mary Lou Buffington of Cumming; daughters, Cheryl Fox of Savannah, Susan Burks of Atlanta and Janet Francesconi of Marietta; a brother, Emmett Buffington of Hoschton; sisters, Ferrell Mayo of Jonesboro, Virginia Martin of Ohio, Martha Garmon of Stone Mountain and Mary Ann Narkates, Pa.; nieces, nephews and other relatives.

VISITATION: 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Ingram Funeral Home in Cumming.

FUNERAL: 11 a.m. Friday at Ingram Funeral Home, entombment in Swanee View Garden.

Russell Gore

TOWNSEND - Russell Gore, 70, died June 8 at St. Vincent's Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla.

He was born in Toombs County and lived in McIntosh County for 30 years. He moved to Townsend from Palatka, Fla. He retired from Escambia with 22 years of service.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Hazel T. Gore of Townsend; three daughters, Laurel Milici and Sue Dykstra, both of Brunswick, and Lavonia Wallace of Shellman Bluff; five sons, Russell L. Gore of Townsend, Roger Gore of Columbus, Darryl Gore of Waynesville, Mitchell Gore of Cox and Jimbo Gore of Albany; eight grandchildren, a great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.

FUNERAL: was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Chapman Funeral Chapel, Brunswick.

COLLINS - Willie Griffin Jr., 51, died June 6 at Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Augusta.

Evans R. Allen

HILTON HEAD ISLAND - Evans Richardson Allen, 82, died June 7.

He was born in Nashville, Tenn., and moved to Hilton Head Island in 1981 from Mequon, Wis. He was a vice president and sales manager of Allen-Edmond and president of Lake Church Leather Products. He was a former member of Dolphin Head Golf Club.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Jean Macdonald Allen of Hilton Head Island; three sons, Tom Allen of Charlottesville, Va., Michael Allen of Westfield, N.J., and Robert Allen of Brightwood, Ore.; two stepdaughters, Patty Knutson of Elm Grove, Wis., and Sally Pfaller of Boulder Junction, Wis.; three brothers, Boyd Allen of Port Washington, Wis., Ralph Allen of Belgium, Wis., and Bill Allen of Arizona; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

SWAINSBORO - Maurice W. "Bud" Martin, 70, died June 9 at Emanuel Medical Center.

He was born in Duluth, Minn., and lived in Treutlen County for many years before moving to Swainsboro. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Carolyn Martin of Swainsboro; a daughter, Melanie M. Dawson of Pascagoula, Miss.; a son, Dale Martin of Dallas; five grandchildren, Dustin Williams, Corey, Laramie, Trevor and Byron Martin; and his mother-in-law, Mildred Norberg of Swainsboro.
