Col. Arthur Tyson,

Retired Army Col. Arthur Wilson Tyson, 90, a former commander of Fort Stewart, died June 8 at home.

Tyson headed the post from January 1961 to July 1963, when he retired from the military.

He was born in Claxton. He was a Methodist and a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

He was a veteran of World War II and served on the staff of the late Gen. Douglas MacArthur.

After leaving as Fort Stewart commander, he became a licensed real estate broker and owner of Tyson Real Estate of Savannah. He was the widower of Mae Ware Tyson.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Amanda Valencia Tyson of Savannah; a son, Maj. Robert D. Tyson of Wrightsville; five grandchildren, Melanie Carrier of Hinesville, Melissa Tyson of Lawrenceville, Rob Tyson of Connecticut, Matthew Tyson of Austin, Texas, and Jonathan Tyson of Atlanta; and two great-grandchildren.

Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service today at Sipple Mortuary.

FUNERAL: 11 a.m. today at Sipple Mortuary, burial on Friday in the United States Military Academy Cemetery at West Point.

Catherine H. Simmons

Catherine Houston "Kitty" Simmons, 67, died June 8 at home.

She was born in Hampton County, S.C., and lived in Savannah most of her life. She was a member of Little Bryan Baptist Church.

SURVIVORS: her husband, Johnnie Simmons of Garden City; a daughter, Cheryl D. Johnson of Garden City; an uncle, Joseph Wilson Sr. of Savannah; an aunt Ethel Wilson of Savannah; a son-in-law, L.C. Johnson of Garden City; a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and other relatives.

HARDEEVILLE - Fred E. Mock, 90, died June 9 at Bayview Nursing Center in Beaufort.

He was born in Grays and retired as a service station operator. He was a member of Hardeeville Masonic Lodge and Ridgeville Baptist Church. He was a former mail carrier on Hilton Head Island.

SURVIVORS: a sister, Lois Breland of Grays; two brothers, Jessie Mock of Ridgeland and Rudolph Mock of Early Branch; and several nieces and nephews.

Pauline S. Gillis

VIDALIA - Pauline Elizabeth Shuman Gillis, 73, died June 9 at Meadows Regional Medical Center.

She was a native of Evans County and lived most of her life in Vidalia. She was a homemaker and a member of Smith Street Baptist Church in Vidalia.

SURVIVORS: two daughters, Karen Summerville of Savannah and Sara Caraway of Lyons; a son, Gary E. Gillis of Vidalia; and two sisters, Doris Oliver of Savannah and Etna Kohler of Marietta.

Alex Johnson

Alex Johnson, 88, died June 9 at Candler Hospital.

He was born in Bulloch County and lived in Savannah most of his life. He was a member of Gaines Chapel AME Church and was a church class leader and served on the Steward Board. He was a member of the F.A.A.Y.M. Masons and a member of the International Rifle Association. He retired from Hunt-Wesson Foods.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Rosa Johnson of Savannah; a daughter, Theta J. Frazier of Savannah; a son, Curtis W. Johnson of Salisbury, Md.; a sister, Rebecca Hendrix of Atlanta; a brother, Issac Johnson Sr. of Metter; six grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives.

Darvin D. Williams

GARFIELD - Darvin D. Williams, 75, died June 9 at home.

He was born in Jenkins County. He was a retired farmer and a former school bus driver for the Jenkins County Board of Education. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of Paynes Chapel Methodist Church.

SURVIVORS: two daughters, Teresa W. Salter of Statesboro and Marilyn Maclin of Godfrey, Ill.; two sisters, Geneva Williams and Lucille Newton, both of Portal; a special friend, Ruby Lee Howard of Statesboro; and five grandchildren.

James O. Moore

PEMBROKE - James Odell Moore, 67, died June 8 at home.

He was born in Liberty County and moved to Bryan County in 1941. He was a deacon of Mill Creek Baptist Church and was educated in the Bryan County school system. He retired from Savannah Combat Readiness Training Center in 1993 after 18 years and also retired from the Agricultural Stabilization Conservation Service (ASCS) after 27 years. He served in the Army from 1952-54. He was a member of the NAACP and the Eastern Star Lodge No. 58, Affectionate Chapter No. 489, OES. He served as chairman of the Ellabell Community Action Group. In recognition of his charitable contributions and love for all mankind, March 18 and 19 were proclaimed as Odell Moore's Day in Bryan County.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Valriee Moore of Pembroke; five daughters, Debra Simmons of Savannah, Bertha F. Davis of Smyrna, Anjeanett Mutcherson, Ella M. Moore and Trenda Fay Scott, all of Pembroke; three sons, James Moore Jr. and Elijah E. Moore, both of Atlanta, and Icen L. Moore of Ellabell; a sister, Annett Warren of Savannah; 27 grandchildren, an aunt, a great-uncle and a host of other relatives.
