Eugene T. Davis

Eugene T. Davis, 38, died June 7 in DeKalb County.

He was a native of Savannah and attended local schools. He was a Catholic. He was employed in residential construction.

SURVIVORS: two sons, Christopher and Frank Davis, both of Savannah; a daughter, Brandy Davis of Savannah; a sister and brother-in-law, Marjorie D. and Franklin Forbes of Brunswick; a brother, William G. Davis of Savannah; his grandmother, Dolly Davis of Savannah; an uncle, Willie A. Davis of Savannah; and several nieces and nephews.

VISITATION: 5-7 p.m. today at Baker-Hayman Funeral Home, with rosary service at 6 p.m.

MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL: 11 a.m. Saturday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, burial in Greenwich section of Bonaventure Cemetery.

Johnnie Mae Peterson

HARDEEVILLE - Mrs. Johnnie Mae Peterson, 82, died June 11 at home.

She was born in Waynesboro, Ga., and lived in Hardeeville for 14 years. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Stephens AME Church in Hardeeville and its Missionary Society.

SURVIVORS: a sister, Lillie C. Freeman of Philadelphia; and two godchildren, Danyelle Chonba of Hardeeville and William Wright of New York.

Joseph J. Jones

ALMA - Joseph Jeofry Jones, 83, died June 10 from injuries in an accident.

He was a native of Toombs County and lived in Bacon County since 1917. He was a deacon of First Baptist Church and a Boy Scout leader for more than 60 years. He was chairman of Concerted Services for more than 30 years and retired from Alma Exchange Bank. He was a charter member of the Alma Lions Club and was named Citizen of the Year on two occasions. He was owner and manager of Jones Insurance Agency for many years.

He served on the Board of Trustees at Brewton-Parker College for more than 30 years and was chairman of the Alma Planning Commission for many years. He helped organize the Alma-Bacon County Historical Society and the Alma-Bacon County Saddle Club. He served several years in the Georgia State Guard as a captain and was a recipient of many regional and local community service awards.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Emma McMahan Jones of Alma; a son, John E. Jones of Cornelia; two daughters, Linda Jones Edgar of Alma and Sara Jones Walker of Atlanta; three brothers, Gerard Jones of Alma, Barrie Jones of Fernandina Beach, Fla., and Al Jones of Ocean Springs, Miss.; a sister, Grace Jones Eubank of Athens; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL: 10 a.m. today at First Baptist Church, burial in Pine Lawn Memorial Gardens.

Sylvia B. Whiteman

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. - Mrs. Sylvia Berliner Whiteman, 82, died June 7 at her home.

She was born in Poland and lived in Savannah most of her life. She moved to Hollywood two and a half years ago. She retired from the Army Corps of Engineers. She was a member of Congregation B'nai Brith Jacob and the Jewish Educational Alliance.

SURVIVORS: her husband, Henry Whiteman of Hollywood; two daughters, Shirley Whiteman of Hollywood and Helene Friedman of Savannah; a brother, Sam Berliner of Savannah; a sister, Anne Rudich of Savannah; three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held Tuesday in Beth David Memorial Gardens.

Ronnie Wilkerson

LUDOWICI - Ronnie Wilkerson, 82, died June 7 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Jesup.

He was born in Tattnall County and retired from CSX Railroad. He was a member of St. Phillips Missionary Baptist Church in Ludowici.

SURVIVORS: a son, Willie F. Wilkerson of Tampa, Fla.; 10 grandchildren, including Wanda Lewis of Ludowici, Lisa Murray of Tampa and Jessie Lewis III of Jacksonville, S.C.; and 25 great-grandchildren.

VISITATION: 6-7 p.m. today at Dorchester Funeral Home in Midway.

Harry E. Bailey Sr., 78, died June 11 at Hospice Savannah Inc.

He was born in Bluffton, S.C., and lived in Savannah for most of his life. He was a communicant of St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church and a member of the American Legion Post 184 and the Plumbers, Steamfitters and Air Conditioners Local 188.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Eloise Redman Bailey of Savannah; sons, Harry E. Bailey Jr. of Dallas, Ralph W. Bailey of Ozark, Ala., and Steve Morrison of Savannah; daughters, Debbie Brannen of Richmond Hill and Patty Alexander of Savannah; four grandchildren, a great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.

She was born in Emanuel County and retired from Miami Carey. She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church and was the widow of Paul O. Bell.

SURVIVORS: daughter-in-law, Nell B. Bell of Swainsboro; grandchildren, Roxie B. Wimberly of Forsyth, Jeff Bell of Atlanta and Paul I. Bell of Swainsboro.

Mrs. Agnes Mitchell Bryant, 49, died June 11 at Memorial Medical Center.

She was a native of Savannah and a licensed practical nurse. She worked for Chatham Nursing Home, Board Oaks, the Westside Urban Health Center and did private duty nursing. She was a graduate of Tompkins High School and the Savannah Area Vocational Technical School of Nursing.

SURVIVORS: daughters, Angelique, Shenika and Nicole Bryant all of Savannah; son, Antonio K. Bryant of Savannah; her parents, Nathaniel and Sarah Truell-Mitchell of Savannah; sister, Pamela Jerral of Savannah; a brother, Nathaniel Mitchell Jr. of Savannah; nine grandchildren, several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

Billy J. Griffin Sr.

Billy J. Griffin Sr., 63, died June 12 at Candler Hospital.

He was a native of Glennville and a resident of Savannah for 44 years. He was retired from Georgia Pacific after 44 years and was a longtime member of First Landmark Missionary Baptist Church.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Myrtle Griffin of Savannah; sons, Billy J. Griffin Jr. of Glenwood and Bryan Griffin of Savannah; daughter, Barbara Lee Miller of Savannah; brother, William S. Griffin of Savannah; sisters, Betty Bazemore, Lillian Banks and Mary Sue Pierce, all of Glennville, and Shirley White of Lyons; eight grandchildren; a great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.

Steve J. Harouse

Steve John Harouse, 87, died June 12 at Azalealand Nursing Home.

He was a native of Charleroi, Pa., and a longtime resident of Oakdale, Pa. He was a resident of Savannah for the past six years. He was retired from the Pennsylvania Railroad. He was a Catholic.

SURVIVORS: daughter, Elaine Mitchel of Townsend, Ga.; a son, Steve A. Harouse of Frankfort, Mich.; three sisters, six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held in Oakdale.

Winton Hendley

STATESBORO -- Winton Hendley, 70, died June 10 at Bulloch Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Bulloch County and was chairman of the deacon board of Antioch Baptist Church. He was a World War II veteran and served in the Korean conflict. He was a retired truck driver and was employed by the Bulloch County Board of Commissioners for the recycling center at Pretoria Station.

SURVIVORS: sisters, Aquilla Pickney of Savannah and Pearl Campbell of Jacksonville, Fla.; brothers, Grady Hendley of Philadelphia, Jewell Hendley Sr., William J. Hendley and Walter McArthur, all of Statesboro; and other relatives.

Addie C. Herring

Addie Elizabeth Cone "Bess" Herring, 80, died June 9 at Memorial Medical Center.

She was born in Clinch County and lived the early years of her life in Fargo, Ga.. She attended Valdosta State College and lived in various places, including Atlanta and Alaska before moving to Dothan, Ala. in 1972. She was the resident manager of Camelot Apartments for several years, before retiring. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and Pathway Baptist Church.

SURVIVORS: son and daughter-in-law, Howard and Leslie C. Herring of Savannah; Harold Herring of Savannah; brothers, Henry Cone of Colorado Springs, Colo., and George H. Cone of Bonifay, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Wilburn H. Howard

Wilburn H. Howard, 80, died June 11 at Candler Hospital.

He was born in Sylvania and was a resident of Savannah since 1948. He attended Georgia Military College and the University of Georgia. He was a deacon of Independent Presbyterian Church and a member of the Savannah Rose Society. He was a retired general contractor and a World War II veteran.

SURVIVORS: son and daughter-in-law, W. Hugh Howard Jr. and Wanda H. Howard of New Bern, N.C.; brothers, John K. Howard of Greensboro, N.C., and Edwin Howard of Mars Hill, N.C.; grandchildren, Stacy and Shelley Lyle, both of Tampa, Fla., Leslie H. Etters of Nashville, Tenn., and Jessica Howard of Boone, N.C.; three brothers-in-law, a sister-in-law, and several nieces and nephews.

James N. Lewis

SWAINSBORO -- James Neal Lewis, 76 died June 11 at Vinson Veterans Medical Center in Dublin.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Emanuel County, where he was a direct descendent of founding pioneer families. He was a graduate of Swainsboro High School and a 1944 State 4-H Champion in farm machinery and animal husbandry. He was an alumnus of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. He served in the Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He also served in the National Guard. He was a retired farmer and electrician. He was co-owner and operator of the Swainsboro Freezer Locker. He was instrumental in attracting industry to Swainsboro by donating property for the building and expansion of the Empire Expressway and industrial development near Swainsboro. He was a Baptist.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Oris Ridgdill Lewis of Swainsboro; sons, Jimmie N. Lewis of Swainsboro, Gary Lewis of Byron and Mickey W. Lewis of Warner Robins; daughter, Melanie J. Lewis Johnson of Swainsboro; sister, Elizabeth Palmer of Swainsboro; and grandchildren, Cole and Neal Lewis, both of Byron, and Zachary TjBoux Johnson of Swainsboro.
