Robert L. Hill

Robert Laurence Hill, 65, died June 11 at St. Joseph's Hospital.

He was a native of St. Louis and a retired insurance adjuster. He was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church on the Isle of Hope, and a former member of Bainbridge Street Baptist Church in Richmond, Va.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Kathryn Cupp Hill of Savannah; three sons, Robert L. Hill Jr. of Germany, Charles D. Hill of Burke, Va., and Michael W. Hill of Savannah; a brother, Charles W. Hill of Hershey, Pa.; and five grandchildren.

MEMORIAL SERVICE: 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, burial in St. Thomas Episcopal Church Memorial Gardens.

Alfred Maynard

Alfred ''Big Al'' Maynard, 78, died June 13 at Memorial Medical Center.

He was a native of Aiken, S.C. He attended Beach High School and was a former funeral director for several funeral homes, including Speed and Smart Funeral Home. He was an Army veteran, having served in the Korean War. He was a member of Men's Club at St. Matthews Episcopal Church, a member of L'Allegro Social Club, First District G.F.S.P.A. and the Georgian Funeral Service Practitioners Association. He was a former steward board member of St. Philip A.M.E. Church.

SURVIVORS: two daughters, Carmelita S. and Altheria Y. Maynard, both of Savannah; a sister, Edith M. Brown of Savannah; a sister-in-law, Josie M. Maynard of Savannah; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Marie E. Melroy

Marie Elizabeth Melroy, 90, died June 11 at Chatham Nursing Home.

She was a native of Hackettstown, N.J., and lived in Savannah for 51 years. She was a graduate of St. Elizabeth's College in Convent Station, N.J. She worked as a draftsman at Picatinny Arsenal in New Jersey, and was a former teacher at Cathedral Day School and Blessed Sacrament School. She was a member of German Country Club and a communicant of St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church.

SURVIVORS: two sons, Russell E. Melroy of Midlothian, Va., and Donald Melroy of Savannah; a daughter, Catherine Sale of the Netherlands; and nine grand children, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

VISITATION: 6-8 p.m. today at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.

ROSARY SERVICE: 7 p.m. today at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.

Talmadge L. Carter

ALMA - Talmadge Lamar Carter, 86, died June 12 at home.

He was a lifelong resident of Bacon County. He was a prominent farmer of the Shady Grove Community of Pierce County, and was a member and deacon of Shady Grove Baptist Church. He was active in the Farm Bureau and served on the Bacon County School Board for several years. For many years he was the overseer of Shady Grove Cemetery and a member of Adult Sunday School Class.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Maureen Tuten Carter; a daughter, Pat Schrews of Atlanta; a son, Fred Carter of Alma; a sister, Mildred Coble of Greensboro, N.C.; three brothers, Pearly, Delmus, and Earl Carter, all of Alma; and seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and several other relatives.

FUNERAL: 11 a.m. Monday at Shady Grove Baptist Church, burial in Shady Grove Cemetery.

Arvie J. Crump

BLACKSHEAR - Arvie James Crump, 88, died June 12 at Pierce County Nursing Home.

He was a native of Gilmer County, and a longtime resident of Pierce County where he engaged in farming until his retirement. He was a member of Bristol Baptist Church, and the widower of Stella Lowman Crump and Julia Hickox Crump.

SURVIVORS: a daughter, Helen Wildes of Blackshear; three sons, Kenneth Crump of Blackshear, Parnell Crump of St. Marys, and James A. Crump Sr. of Hazlehurst; two sisters, Linda Jones and Beatrice Crosby, both of Mershon; three brothers, Olin and Quinton Crump, both of Blackshear, and B.W. Crump of Mershon; and 10 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and several other relatives.

VISITATION: 7-9 p.m. today at Pearson-Treadwell Funeral Home, Blackshear.

Dessie Seckinger Hildebrand died June 12 at Hospice Savannah.

She was a native of Springfield, and a longtime Savannah resident. She was retired from Carter Seed & Drug and was a member of Wesley Oak United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.

SURVIVORS: several nieces and nephews, including Evelyn Gandy of Savannah; and a stepsister, Mary Morgan of Springfield.

LYONS - Glynn James, 76, died June 13 at home.

He was a native of Toombs County. He was a retired auto mechanic and owner of Glynn James Garage in Lyons for many years, and a longtime employee of Brown Chevrolet Co. before its closing. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Lyons.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Etheleen Dickerson James of Lyons; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Gary D. James of Lyons, and Willie G. James Jr. and Sharon James of Crestview, Fla.; a sister and brother-in-law, Oralene and Jack Morris of Lyons; a brother and sister-in-law, Cove and Laneth James of Savannah; and several nieces and nephews.

He was a lifelong resident of Bulloch County. He was a retired carpenter, and was a Baptist.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Christine McCorkel Prosser of Statesboro; and a brother and sister-in-law, Aubrey and Alice Prosser of Statesboro.

She was a native of Emanuel County, and a longtime Savannah resident. She was a retired beautician from Wally's Beauty Salon. and a member of the Louisiana Avenue Church of God.

Sikes of Atlanta; two daughters, Elizabeth Capers and Linda Griffin, both of Atlanta; a sister, Christine Coleman of Lyons; five brothers, Alfred, Lloyd, Paul, Mandel, and Runt Edenfield, all of Lyons; and five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

He was a native of Meridian, Miss., and lived in Savannah and Garden City for more than 40 years. He was retired from Rheem Manufacturing Co.

Shearouse of Savannah; two brothers, Jimmy Sings of Moss Point, Miss., and Wade Sings of New Orleans; three grandchildren, Hidie M. Hiott of Pooler, Glen M. Shearouse and William L. McCaskey, both of Savannah; and several nieces and nephews.

Betty J. Sullivan

Betty Joyce Sullivan, 69, died June 9 at Baptist Hospital in Jackson, Miss.

She was a lifelong resident of Savannah, and lived on Tybee Island. She retired from Savannah Electric and Power Co. after 17 years. She was an active member of Chapel by the Sea Baptist Church, where she was director of the W.M.U. She was a former member of Immanuel Baptist Church and the Savannah Senior Citizens Geechee Quilting Guild.

SURVIVORS: her husband, Henry A. Sullivan of Tybee Island; three daughters, Mary S. Ingram of Savannah, Dianne S. Klevinski of Tobaccoville, N.C., and Bonnie S. Hardison of Pooler; a brother, George R. Kelley of Hartwell; two sisters, Catherine Ravita of Melbourne, Fla., and Elaine Swope of Hartwell; two grandchildren, Grant Sullivan of Tybee Island, and Shawn Hardison of Pooler; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Mattie P. Taylor

STATESBORO - Mattie Perkins Taylor, 91, died June 13 at Bulloch Memorial Hospital.

She was a Jenkins County native. She lived in Bulloch County until 1955, then moved to Savannah until 1988 and retired in Statesboro. She was a homemaker and a member of Ardsley Park Baptist Church in Savannah.

SURVIVORS: two sons, Ernest Taylor of Statesboro, and James Taylor of San Diego; 11 grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

VISITATION: 5 p.m. today at Joiner-Shepard Funeral Home, Statesboro.

COCHRAN - Lester F. Ware, 75, died June 12 at Taylor Regional Hospital in Hawkinsville.

He was a native of Appling County, and lived in Cochran for the past 45 years. He was a retired railroad conductor from Southern Railroad and was a member of Cochran Masonic Lodge No. 217 F&AM.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Inez Collier Ware of Cochran; three daughters, Jean Ware and Patty W. Morris, both of Cochran, and Susan Dooley of Newnan; a sister, Catherine Mills of Surrency; and four brothers, Robert Ware of Tampa, Fla., Hiram Ware of Savannah, John H. Ware of Baxley, and Harry Ware of Milan.

Riley of Savannah; three sisters, Beverly D. Ruth, Gina Golden, and Mrs. Shawn Green, all of Savannah; four brothers, Tyrone Riley of Savannah, Samuel Golden Jr., Louis and Belton Golden, all of Atlanta; and several other relatives.
