WAYCROSS - Alva Thomas Gordon, 97, died June 17 at Satilla Regional Medical Center.

She was born in Baxley. She was a homemaker and a member of Calvary Baptist Temple in Savannah.

SURVIVORS: three sisters, Ila Mae Morton of Waycross, Lola Thomason of Statesboro and Gerti Proctor of Lake Panasoffkee, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

GRAVESIDE SERVICE: 11 a.m. Saturday in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Savannah.

Germain F. Jones

SCREVEN - Germain Franklin Jones, 81, died June 17 at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Wayne County and was a member of O'Quinn Baptist Church. She was a homemaker and the widow of William Vernon Jones.

SURVIVORS: two daughters, Verna A. Mathis of Screven and Elda Woodward of Jacksonville, Fla.; a son, John D. Jones of Screven; a sister, Orita Jones of Jacksonville; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL: 11 a.m. today at O'Quinn Baptist Church, burial in Screven City Cemetery.

Nena W. Scott

REIDSVILLE - Mrs. Nena Waters Scott, 86, died June 17 at Evans Memorial Hospital in Claxton.

She was born in Evans County and was a member of Reidsville Baptist Church. She served as a Pink Lady at Tattnall Memorial Hospital in Reidsville for several years. She and her late husband, Roy R. Scott, were carriers for the Savannah Morning News for more than 20 years.

SURVIVORS: a daughter, Sandra McGuire of Savannah; a son, Curtis K. Scott of McDonough; four sisters, Louise Blocker of Glennville, Carolyn Alexander of Panama City, Fla., Lizzie Brewton and Nina Bradley (her twin sister), both of Claxton; three brothers, Luther Waters of Belleville and Leon and Loren Waters, both of Claxton; nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

VISITATION: today until 9 p.m. at McCall Funeral Home in Reidsville.

FUNERAL: 11 a.m. Saturday at Reidsville Baptist Church, burial in Reidsville City Cemetery.

Virginia J. Champion

Virginia Jenkins Champion, 76, died June 6 at Memorial Medical Center.

She was a native of Bacon County and the widow of Mosley H. Champion. She attended Georgia Teachers College and was a resident of Oceanside Nursing Center after moving from Statesboro. She was a longtime resident of Fort Pierce, Fla., and retired as office manager of Sunrise Ford Tractor Co. Inc., Fort Pierce. She attended First United Methodist Church of Fort Pierce.

SURVIVORS: several nieces and nephews.

Interment will be private in Elmhurst Cemetery in Elberton.

Ann E. Zuhlke

RICHMOND HILL - Ann E. Zuhlke, 89, died June 18 at Midway Nursing Home in Midway.

She was born in Tennessee and lived in Richmond Hill for 25 years. She worked for Genera Motors Credit Union in Flint, Mich., before retiring. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Richmond Hill.

SURVIVORS: a daughter, Connie Miller of Lake George; a brother, Myers Alexander Jr. of Sarasota, Fla.; three grandsons, Mark and Brent Miller, both of Lake George, and Dennis Miller of Guyton; seven great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandchild and a nephew.

VISITATION: 7-9 p.m. today at Stewart Brothers Funeral Service, Richmond Hill Chapel.

FUNERAL: 10 a.m. Saturday at Stewart Brothers Funeral Service, Richmond Hill Chapel, burial in First Baptist Church Cemetery.

William C. Baker Sr

William Cooper "Bill" Baker Sr., 86, died June 17 at the home of a daughter in Cartersville.

He was born in Savannah and was the widower of Nona Rosemond Smith Baker. He was co-owner of Montgomery Roofing Co. and a roofer and sheet metal worker. He was a member of Whitmarsh Island Christian Church and served as elder, chairman of the Board of Deacons, Sunday school superintendent and Sunday school teacher. He moved to Cartersville in January 1997 and attended Immanuel Worship Center until his death.

SURVIVORS: five daughters, Tiny Sheppard and Jane Tuten, both of Cartersville, Geri Grantham and Bille Hardee, both of Savannah, and Mary Shannon of Black Mountain, N.C.; two sons, William C. Baker Jr. of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and John R. Baker of Savannah; two stepsisters, Virginia Deal of Stone Mountain and Josephine Richardson; a brother, Joseph R. Baker Sr. of Savannah; 14 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

VISITATION: 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. today at Hubert C. Baker Funeral Home.

FUNERAL: 2 p.m. Saturday at Hubert C. Baker Funeral Home, burial in Oak Hill Cemetery in Meldrim.

Mickey Mills

ALBANY - Michael C. "Mickey" Mills, 54, who worked at Georgia newspapers as a reporter and editor, died June 15 at home.

He was born in Appling County and lived in Albany for 18 years. He was employed by the Albany Herald since 1980. At the Herald, he covered a variety of subjects, including the Albany City Commission, the Dougherty County Commission, Water, the Gas and Light Commission, politics and religion. He was also an editorial writer for the newspaper.

A graduate of the University of Georgia, he joined the Albany newspaper after eight years as city editor of the Waycross Journal-Herald. Earlier, he was assistant city editor of the Columbus Enquirer.

He won or shared in numerous writing awards during his career, including the Associated Press Sweepstakes Award, two first-place awards from the AP for spot news under deadline pressure, a first-place AP award for public service and a first-place award from United Press International for investigative reporting.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Baxley.

SURVIVORS: an aunt and several cousins.

GRAVESIDE SERVICE: was held at 2 p.m. Thursday in Omega Cemetery.

Robert J. Quinn Jr.

Retired Air Force Col. Robert J. Quinn Jr. died June 14.

He was a member of Skidaway Island Kiwanis Club, St. Andrew's Society of Savannah, Coastal Scottish Heritage Society, SAMS Post No. 7 and Skidaway Island Community Church. During World War II, he commanded the 15th Cavalry Group in the European Theater of Operations.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Juana Quinn of Atlantic Beach, Fla.; a son, retired Army Col. Robert J. Quinn III of Savannah and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; and a grandson, Robert J. Quinn IV of Savannah.

Internment will be at the United States Military Academy in West Point, N.Y., at the convenience of the family.

Evelyn S. Finnigan

SEATTLE - Mrs. Evelyn S. Finnigan, 81, died June 17 at home.

She was born in Screven County, Ga., and was a former longtime resident of Savannah. She worked at Hunter Air Force Army Base for many years and was retired for many years. She was the widow of John L. Finnigan and John Williams Thomas.

SURVIVORS: a son, David F. Williams of Seattle; two grandchildren, David C. Williams and Laura A. Williams Arnold of Vienna, Austria; and two great-granddaughters, Veronica E. and Alexandrea K. Williams, both of Devonport, New Zealand.

Burial will be in the family cemetery in Screven County.

Elliott E. Lanier Sr.

METTER - Elliott Earl Lanier Sr., 77, died June 18 at Bulloch Memorial Hospital in Statesboro.

He was a Lifelong resident of Candler County. He was a farmer, co-owner of Metter Livestock Market for 33 years and owner of Lanier Jewelers. He was an Army veteran and recipient of the Purple Heart. He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 435, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Metter Primitive Baptist Church.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Dot F. Lanier of Metter; a son and daughter-in-law, Lana Lanier and Elliott E. Lanier Jr. of Cobbtown; a daughter and son-in-law, Delilah and Jesse Ray Collins of Metter; two brothers, Ray L. Lanier and J. Byron Lanier, both of Metter; two sisters, Editha Thompson of Metter and Vera Dell Davidson of Thompson; and five grandchildren.

VISITATION: 6-9 p.m. today at Kennedy-Morgan Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel.

FUNERAL: 11 a.m. Saturday at Metter Primitive Baptist Church, burial in Lake Cemetery.

COVINGTON - Alma Irene Outler, 77, died June 18.

She was born in Toombs County, lived in Covington about 15 years and was a former resident of Vidalia. She retired from Oxford Industries in Lyons as a seamstress.

SURVIVORS: a son, Sherrill Lundy of Covington; a stepson, Charles Outler of Buford; a stepdaughter, June Dixon of Vidalia; a brother, J.T. Harrison of Atlanta; two grandsons, Alan and Lee Lundy, both of Covington; four stepgrandchildren, a step-great-grandchild and nieces and nephews.
