Bessie A. Miller

ATLANTA -- Mrs. Bessie Kennedy Adams Miller died June 18 at Imperial Health Care.

She was a native of Savannah and a member of First Congregational Church of Savannah. She was a graduate of South Carolina State College in Orangeburg, S.C., and taught school in Macon for a few years. She was the president of the Variety Garden Club of Savannah, co-founder of the Georgia Association of Garden Clubs Inc., founder and organizer of the Artistic Dogwood Garden Club and the Hibiscus Garden Club.

SURVIVORS: two nieces, Patricia C. Williams of New York and Annette Brock of Savannah; three nephews, Stephen A. and Antonio Williams, both of Atlanta, and Joseph B. Williams Sr. of Savannah; a goddaughter and several other relatives.

VISITATION: will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Williams & Williams Funeral Home in Savannah.

BURIAL: 1 p.m. Tuesday in Lincoln Memorial Cemetery.

Lynn H. Mortimer

HILTON HEAD ISLAND -- Lynn H. Mortimer, 81, died June 18 at Bayview Nursing Center in Beaufort.

He was born in Springfield, Vt., and was a resident of Hilton Head Island for 20 years, moving from Amityville, N.Y. During World War II, he worked for Sperry Gyroscope, where they produced the bomb sights for the Air Corps Long Range Bombers and also worked for Curtis Wright Propeller Division, designing propellers for World War II fighters. After the war he co-founded HALM Instrument Co. His accomplishments with Sperry Gyroscope included the development of the Terrain Avoiding Radar, Guidance Systems for the Sparrow Missile, and project manager of the Communication Tower in Panama City, Fla. He was retired from Sperry in the early 1970's. He was the widower of Lorraine Katherine Mortimer.

SURVIVORS: three sons, David Mortimer Of Amityville, and Greg and Eric Mortimer, both of Hilton Head Island; and four grandchildren, Kelly and Chuck Mortimer, both of Amityville, Yancy Mortimer of Pleasantville, Tenn., and Jessie Mortimer of Hilton Head Island.

VISITATION: 7-8 p.m. today at The Island Funeral Home of Hilton Head Island.

MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL: 10 a.m. Monday at St. Francis by the Sea Catholic Church.

Internment will be in St. Francis by the Sea Columbarium at a later date.

SWAINSBORO -- Jennie Mae Kirkus Odum, 77, died June 19 at Memorial Medical Center in Savannah.

She was a native of Charleston and retired as a bookkeeper with Sears & Roebuck Co. after 25 years. She was a member of Canoochee Baptist Church and Woodmen Of The World.

SURVIVORS: a stepdaughter, Hazel Hines of Castleberry, Fla.; five grandchildren, Carla Norby of Richland, Debra Silas of Savannah, Cliff Odum of Covington, and Ronnie and Clyde Achord, both of Castleberry; six great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.

VISITATION: 6-8 p.m. today at Peebles-Curry-Durden Mortuary in Swainsboro.

FUNERAL: 11 a.m. Monday at Canoochee Baptist Church, burial at 3 p.m. in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Savannah.

Willie D. Stewart

Willie Daniel Stewart, 44, died June 18 at Candler Hospital.

He was a native of Effingham County and lived in Savannah most of his life. He was a former truck driver for Daniel Lumber Co., and attended the Chatham County public schools. He was a former member of Brampton Baptist Church.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Johnnie Mae Stewart of Savannah; a daughter, Demetria Stewart of Savannah; a sister, Mildred Samuels of Savannah; a brother, Joe Glenn of Savannah; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Johnnie and Juanita Samuels of Savannah; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

Edwin B. Bunch

BRUNSWICK -- Edwin Brannen Bunch, 73, died June 20.

He was born in Statesboro. He was a member of First Baptist Church and a retired manager of Pet Dairy in Brunswick. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Betty Bunch of Brunswick; a daughter, Michelle Trapnell of Douglas; two sons, Michael Bunch of Durham, N.C., and Patrick Bunch of Atlanta; two stepsons, Allen Lewis of Riverdale and Larry Lewis of Virginia; his mother, Maude Norton of Lake Placid, Fla.; a sister, Grace Catz of Miami; and four brothers, Sam, Joe and Hugh Bunch, all of Lake Placid, and Jack Bunch of California; five grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

VISITATION: 6-8 p.m. today at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home in Brunswick.

STATESBORO -- Mrs. Martha Mincey, 81, died June 20 at Brown's Nursing Home under hospice care.

She was a native of Emanuel County and lived in Bulloch County most of her life. She was a homemaker and a member of Emit Grove Baptist Church.

SURVIVORS: two sons and daughters-in-law, V. Dennis and Judy Mincey of Statesboro, and Kenneth W. and Judy Mincey of Brooklet; and grandchildren, David D. and Tara Mincey, both of Brooklet.

Pearly U. Thigpen

ADRIAN -- Pearly U. Thigpen, 73, died June 19 at home.

He was born in Johnson County and graduated from the University of Georgia. He was retired from the State of Georgia. He was an Army veteran of World War II and later served in the Air Force. He was a member of Bethesda Baptist Church near Adrian and the American Legion in Wrightsville.

SURVIVORS: four sisters, Jessie Nell Christian of Porterdale, Trudie Hester of McGee, Miss., Jane Alexander of Lawrenceville and Lelia Davis of Dublin; a brother, Nuburn Thigpen of Adrian; and several nieces and nephews.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Mrs. Evelyn Summerall Thrasher, 78, died June 20 at Baptist Medical Center.

She was a native of Appling County and lived in Jacksonville for the past two years, moving from Atlanta. She was a Baptist.

SURVIVORS: two daughters, Deborah T. Bohler of Jacksonville and Connie T. Kemp of Marietta; a son, Kenneth L. Thrasher of Atlanta; two sisters, Louise Griffith of Jacksonville and Hulda Baker of Baxley; seven grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

VISITATION: noon until hour of funeral Monday at Ten Mile Creek Baptist Church.

Richard Walker Sr.

NEW YORK -- Richard Walker Sr., 57, died June 18 at Ralph H. Johnson Veterans Administration Medical Center in Charleston.

He was a native of Savannah. He graduated with honors from Automotive Trades High School in Brooklyn, N.Y. and was an Army veteran.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Carmon Walker of New York; a son, Richard Walker Jr. of Dallas; three stepdaughters, Deidre and Whitney Martin, and Toni Walker, all of New York City; his mother, Beulah Walker of Savannah; two sisters, Rosa T. Brown of Savannah and Willie P. Frazier of New York City; four brothers, Billy and Stephen Walker, both of Savannah, Willie Walker Jr., and Jackie Walker, both of New York City; five grandchildren, a great-grandchild, a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives.

She was a native of Effingham County and retired from Southern Bell. She was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church, the Charity Circle and the Pioneers of America.

SURVIVORS: a daughter, Jacquline Bevill of Rincon; a stepdaughter, Barbara Ann Tant of Alpharetta; a stepson, Stephen Whiten of Lake Forest Ill.; four sisters, Mattie Thomas, Mary Danley, Nellie Arnsdorff, and Clara Freyermuth, all of Springfield; two brothers, James Arnsdorff of Clyo and G.L. C.E. "Gene" Woods, 71, of Pooler, died June 20 at St. Joseph's Hospital.

He was born in Jesup and was a resident of Anchorage, Alaska, for more than 25 years. He lived in Pooler the past two years.

He was born in Beaufort County. He was a student at Hilton Head Primary School and a member of Hilton Head Elementary Steel Band. He was a member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church of Hilton Head Island and the Boys and Girls Club.

CANNON BLUFF -- Benjamin D. Dunham, 66, died June 17 at Candler Hospital.

He was born and educated in McIntosh County. He was a retired automotive mechanic and an Army veteran. He was a member of Welcome Baptist Church, Cannon Bluff, and lived in New York most of his adult life before moving back to McIntosh County several years ago.

SURVIVORS: two daughters, Lovelle B. Armstrong of Meridian and Desiree Hollis of Shellman Bluff; a son, Benjamin T. Dunham of Shellman Bluff; his mother, Lillian Dunham of Cannon Bluff; two sisters, Annie L. Howard and Argie M. Stephens, both of Cannon Bluff; and a grandchild.

E. Davis Powers Jr.

ESTILL, S.C. -- E. Davis Powers Jr., 68, died June 20 at Colleton Regional Medical Center in Walterboro.

He was born in Charleston and was known as Hampton County's "Mr. Music." He was choral director of Estill public schools from 1954-1981 and chairman of the music department at the University of South Carolina's Salkehatchie campus in Allendale from 1971-1997. He served as minister of music at Lawtonville Baptist Church in Estill from 1954-1970 and was serving as minister of music at Sandy Run Baptist Church near Hampton since 1985. He was owner/director of Power's School of Music. He was a recipient of the National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowships to Columbia University, New York City.

He received a bachelor of science degree from the College of Charleston, a master of science in music from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and was founding director of Hampton County Choral Society. He was a member of Lawtonville Baptist Church.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Virginia Langford Powers of Estill; two sons, Davis Powers III of Columbia and William V. Powers of Tampa, Fla.; a daughter, Mary Brunson of Lexington; and three grandchildren.

GRAVESIDE SERVICE: 4 p.m. today in Lawtonville Cemetery near Estill.
