James Glover

METTER - James "J.B." Glover, 83, died June 19 at Pleasant View Health Care Center.

He was born in Wilkerson County and was a retired farmer. He was a member of Mercer Grove Baptist Church, Metter.

SURVIVORS: six nieces, Julia Burton of Savannah, Ruby Reeves of Brooklet, Ola Mincey and Louise Gray, both of Lakewood, N.J., Ethel Morgan of Collins and Carrie Wright of Statesboro; three nephews, Ben Freeman of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Claude Mincey of Lakewood and Lynn Wright of Statesboro.

FUNERAL: 1 p.m. Wednesday at Whitaker Funeral Home, burial in St. Matthew Church Cemetery, Metter.

Friedel A. Douglas

METTER - Friedel Anna Douglas died June 21 at home.

She was born in Mannheim, Germany, where she served as a volunteer for the allied forces in occupied Germany during World War II. She moved to the United States in 1957. Since then she worked as an advertising agent for Kmart and as a waitress at JoMax Barbecue. She was a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church and served as secretary and treasurer of the Young at Heart Group. She was also a volunteer at the Care Cottage and the Metter Welcoming Center.

SURVIVORS: two daughters, Wilma H. Douglas of Metter and Deborah A. Douglas of Simpsonville, S.C.; a granddaughter, Anastasia M. Hall of Simpsonville; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Grayson and Jean Douglas of Metter; three sisters-in-law, Myrtle Jones, Marjorie Cook and Willene Douglas, all of Metter; and several cousins.

VISITATION: 6-9 p.m. today at Kennedy-Morgan Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel.

FUNERAL: 10 a.m. Wednesday at Kennedy-Morgan Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel, burial in Lake Cemetery.

Helen Catherine May, 75, died June 21 at Candler Hospital.

She was born in Great Neck, N.Y., and lived many years in Dix Hills, Long Island, N.Y., before moving to Savannah seven years ago. She had worked with Mobile Oil Co. for 10 years and was a homemaker.

SURVIVORS: her husband, Richard L. May of Savannah; two sons, Richard L. May Jr. of Savannah and Jeffery A. May of Seattle; and a sister, Adele Sholz of Jupiter, Fla.

VISITATION: 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at Fox Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.

FUNERAL: will be private.

Ethel B. Gaston

Mrs. Ethel Cornelia Bogan Gaston, 69, died June 19 at Candler Hospital.

She was born in Savannah, lived in New York for 30 years and returned to Savannah 10 years ago. She received a bachelor's degree in education from Savannah State University and attended Hunter College in New York and Queens College in New York. She retired as a teacher with the Uniondale (N.Y.) school system. She was a member of TAGS (Teen Age Girls) and the Savannah MOLES, a past vice president of the Savannah Sophisticates and the Group North and South.

SURVIVORS: a son and daughter in-law, Edward S. and Deborah S. Gaston of Rosedale, N.Y.; her mother, Ethel Sawyer Bogan of Tybee Island; three sisters, Kathryn B. Johnson of Tybee Island, Dorothy B. LaSaine of Washington and Mary B. Ward of Savannah; a brother, Walter J. Bogan Jr. of Guttenberg, N.J.; an uncle, Merritt B. Sawyer of Savannah; four nephews, two nieces and other relatives.

FUNERAL: 10 a.m. today at St. Benedict The Moor Catholic Church, burial in Lincoln Memorial Cemetery.

Vernon Yawn

HAZLEHURST - Vernon Yawn, 84, died June 21 at home.

He was a native of Bacon County, spent 20 years in southern California and lived most of his life in Jeff Davis County. He was the widower of Bessie Mae Davis Yawn. He was a retired farmer and an electrical member of IBEW.

SURVIVORS: four daughters, Verna Taylor of Savannah, Cindy Gengo of New Haven, Ind., Linda Lou Daniels and Emma Sue Hoffmann, both of San Bernardino, Calif.; three sisters, Maxine Simmons and Geneva Rogers, both of Hazlehurst, and Addie Carter of Waycross; a brother, Herman Yawn of Alma; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

VISITATION: will begin at 6: 30 p.m. today at Miles Funeral Home in Hazlehurst.

BAXLEY - Magdalene Page Carter, 84, died June 20 at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Peters, Mo.

She was a lifelong resident of Appling County and the widow of Willie M. Carter. She was a member of Memorial Free Will Baptist Church and a homemaker.

SURVIVORS: two daughters and a son-in-law, Jo Beth Cosby of Lexington, S.C., and DeAlpha and Robert Schneider of St. Peters; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Philip Carter of Surrency; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She was a native of Marion County, Ind. She was a homemaker and a member of the Assembly of God Church in Swainsboro.

SURVIVORS: a daughter and son-in-law, Malinda and Clyde Rice of Jacksonville, Fla; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Brian Schoen and Karl and Colleen Schoen, all of Swainsboro; two sisters, Florence Pearson of Swainsboro and Edith Fader of Vernon, Fla.; a brother, Frank Huber of Miami; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Leroy Johnson

Leroy "Pappy" Johnson, 63, died June 21 at Memorial Medical Center.

He was born in Savannah and attended the public schools of Chatham County. He retired from Liberty Plumbing Co., the Coastal Food Bank and First Baptist Church, where he was custodian. He was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church, the Usher Board and the Brotherhood Club. He was a member of Glen Lodge No. 1 of International FAM Masons and served as warden for the Order of Eastern Star.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Ruth C. Johnson of Savannah; four daughters, Delores Larck, Cynthia Gadson, Patricia Johnson and Connie J. Robinson, all of Savannah; five sisters, Ida M. Johnson of Bronx, N.Y., Elizabeth Hyman of White Plains, N.Y., Annette Galloway of New York, Brenda Parker of Atlanta and Patricia Murphy of Savannah; two brothers, Stanley Grant of Tampa, Fla., and Harold Freeman of Savannah; an aunt, eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

SOPERTON - Miss Elizabeth Richardson, 16, died June 21.

She was a lifelong resident of Treutlen County and a ninth-grade student at Treutlen High School. She was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church near Dublin.

SURVIVORS: her parents, John L. and Daisy Richardson of Soperton; three brothers, Raymond, Billy and Jeremy Richardson, all of Soperton; her maternal grandmother, Mrs. Jessie Smith of Dublin; her paternal grandmother, Lillian Richardson of Soperton; and several nieces and nephews.

Clarence Boles, 92, died June 19 at Memorial Medical Center.

He was born in Richmond Hill, lived in Miami for 45 years and moved to Savannah 10 years ago. He was educated in the public schools of Bryan County. He retired after being a porter at several Miami Beach hotels. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of St. John Baptist Church in Miami and First Jerusalem Baptist Church in Savannah.

SURVIVORS: a daughter, Mary Clifford Angry of Los Angeles; a son, Herbert Glaze of Miami; a sister, Dorothy Brown of Lancaster, S.C.; six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was born in Screven County and lived a number of years in Effingham County before moving to Bulloch County in 1997. She was the widow of Grady Williams and was a member of Doublehead Baptist Church in Screven County.

SURVIVORS: five daughters, Margaret Wilson of Pembroke, Jo Ann Jordan of Stilson, Bobbie NeSmith of Savannah, Frances Smith of Rincon and Helen Warren of Bloomingdale; two sons, John E. Williams of Statesboro and Ray Williams of Rincon; 36 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

VISITATION: 6-8 p.m. today at Fountain Funeral Home, Port Wentworth.

SURVIVORS: a daughter, Faye M. Royal of Claxton; two sons, Randy D. and Roger W. McDonald, both of Vidalia; a brother, Jerol Dixon of Jesup; and four grandchildren, Drew Miles of Claxton and Leslie, Lauren and Casey McDonald, all of Vidalia.

STATESBORO - William Mobley "Bill" Hill, 65, died June 21 at Bulloch Memorial Hospital.

He was a native of Rock Hill, S.C., and grew up in Augusta. He lived in Decatur for many years and moved to Statesboro recently after living in Gadsden, Ala., for several years. He attended Richmond Academy and graduated from Georgia Tech in 1955, where he was a member of Chi Phi Fraternity. He served in the Air Force and was discharged as a captain. He was employed as a chief estimator with Dawson Construction Co. He was a member of Alabama City Methodist Church.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Libby Hill of Statesboro; two sons, Mobley Hill of Atlanta and Steven Hill of Los Angeles; a daughter, Sally Bacon of Statesboro; a sister, Marion Rosson of Marietta; a brother, James J. Hill of Savannah; and six grandchildren.

VISITATION: 10-11: 30 a.m. Wednesday at Hodges-Turner Funeral Home in Statesboro.

FUNERAL: 2 p.m. Wednesday at Statesboro First United Methodist Church, burial in Eastside Cemetery.
