Freeman S. Kennedy

HILTON HEAD ISLAND - Freeman S. Kennedy, 100, died June 21 at the home of his son Harold.

He was born in Melrose, Mass., and recently celebrated his 100th birthday at Sea Pines Country Club. He was the widower of Alice Kennedy. He spent most of his working life in the animal feed business and retired in 1965 as vice president-sales of the Beacon Milling Co.

SURVIVORS: two sons, Harold Kennedy of Hilton Head Island and Alan Kennedy of Orlando, Fla.; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services and interment will be in New Jersey.

J.B. Joiner

BROOKLET - J.B. Joiner, 81, died June 21 at Bulloch Memorial Hospital.

He was a native of Bulloch County and a retired farmer. He was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II.

SURVIVORS: a son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Mary Joiner of Brooklet; a sister, Jean Ballentine of Atlanta; two grandsons, Corey Joiner of New Jersey and Jason Joiner of Brooklet; and two great-grandsons, Joshua Joiner and Jason Joiner Jr., both of Brooklet.

Richard Wright Sr.

Richard Wright Sr., 64, died June 21 at St. Joseph's Hospital.

He was a native of Hardeeville and attended the Jasper County, S.C., public schools. He was a resident of Savannah more than 20 years and retired with the International Longshoremen's Association, Local 1414.

SURVIVORS: four daughters, Derricee W. Steele, Alberta W. Brown, Gwendolyn W. Mervin and Evangeline T. Wright, all of Hardeeville; three sons, Richard F. Wright Jr., Ulysess Wright and Michael L. Wright Sr., all of Hardeeville; four sisters, Wilhelmina Chalmers, Mary Wright and Frederica Wright, all of Hardeeville, and Elizabeth Wright of Washington; two brothers, Luke Wright of Washington and Nathaniel Wright Sr. of Hardeeville; 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL: 11 a.m. Thursday at Macedonia Baptist Church in Levy, S.C., burial in Sherwood Cemetery.

Hattie B. McDonald

BLACKVILLE, S.C. - Mrs. Hattie Bacon McDonald, 78, died June 22 at home.

She was a native of Bryan County, Ga., a graduate of Pembroke High School and a homemaker. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Blackville, Eastern Star Harmony Hope Chapter No. 229 in Barnwell, the WMU and American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 91. in Blackville. She formerly worked at Barnwell County Hospital as a clerk and at Amerotron in Barnwell.

SURVIVORS: her husband, E.J. McDonald of Blackville; two sons, E. Stanley McDonald of Blackville and Larry V. McDonald of McKinney, Texas; a daughter, Angela McDonald MacKay of Guyton, Ga.; three sisters, Rosalee Shuman of Pembroke, Ga., Aleene Ansley of Bloomingdale and Stefanie Stanford of Americus, Ga.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

JESUP - Juanita C. Kirkland, 64, died June 22 at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

She was a native of Wayne County, a homemaker and a member of Memorial Baptist Church.

SURVIVORS: two daughters, Brenda McDonald and Debbie Landon, both of Jesup; three sons, David, Ray and Ronnie Kirkland, all of Jesup; her mother, Wincy Mize of Weaver, Ala.; a brother, Clifford Grey of Weaver; a sister, Corine Smith of Weaver; three grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

He was a native of Atlanta and a retired Baptist minister.

HILTON HEAD ISLAND -- Jean Owsley Weaver, 84, died June 21 at Hilton Head Medical Center and Clinics.

She was born in Chicago and was a longtime resident of Sea Pines and the Seabrook. She was active in the Girl Scouts and the Mental Health Association over the years.

SURVIVORS: her husband, Pete Weaver of Hilton Head Island; a daughter, Bea Fuller of Hilton Head Island; and three grandchildren, Michael Fuller of Atlanta, William and Michelle Fuller, both of Hilton Head Island.

Edward J. Chatman

EARLY BRANCH, S.C. -- Edward J. Chatman, 91, died June 22 at Beaufort Memorial Hospital in Beaufort.

He was born in La Grange, Ga., and educated in Georgia and North Carolina schools. He was a resident of Danville, Va., for a number of years. He was employed as a doorman with the Woman's City Club of Detroit and retired from the Detroit Athletic Club. He was a resident of Early Branch since 1986.

He was a former member of Mount Olive Baptist Church in Detroit, where he participated in the Sunday school, Usher Board, Brotherhood and was an ordained deacon. He was a member of Wilkerson Baptist Church, Early Branch, and served on the Usher Board and the Board of Deacons.

SURVIVORS: his wife, J. Everlena Shaw Chatman of Early Branch; two sons, Jerome Harris and Joey Shaw, both of Detroit; four grandchildren, Montel Harris of California, Lani, Erin and Asha Harris, all of Detroit; and other relatives.

VISITATION: 7-9 p.m. today at Wilkerson Baptist Church in Early Branch.

He was a native of Appling County and lived in Fayetteville the past 45 years. He was a retired truck driver, a business agent and a lifetime member of Teamster Local 528. He was a deacon of Antioch Baptist Church in Fayetteville.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Ethel T. Johnson of Richmond Hill; three sons, Willie and Ray Johnson, both of Richmond Hill, and Charles Johnson of Richmond, Va.; a sister, Vernon Johnson of Detroit; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
