Jack H. Thompson

STATESBORO -- Jack H. Thompson, 56, died June 23 at Bulloch Memorial Hospital.

He was a native of Chatham County and moved to Bulloch County in 1953, then to Grant, Ala., in 1975 and back to Statesboro three years ago. He was a retired paint contractor and a member of the Church of God faith.

SURVIVORS: his mother, Loraine Kennedy of Statesboro; his father, Jack Thompson of Savannah; two daughters, Lena Bell of Savannah and Holly Sheffield of Millen; two sons, Ernie Thompson of North Carolina and Joe Thompson of Grant; and six grandchildren.

VISITATION: 6-9 p.m. today at Joiner-Shepard Funeral Home in Statesboro.

FUNERAL: 3 p.m. Thursday at Joiner-Shepard Funeral Home in Statesboro, burial will be on a later date.

Rance B. Thomas

Rance B. Thomas, 79, died June 22 at Candler Hospital.

He was born in Pierce County and lived in Savannah most of his life. He retired from civil service at Hunter Army Airfield as a heavy duty mechanic. He was a labor union member and a member of the American Legion. He was a Presbyterian.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Laura Thomas of Savannah; four daughters, Wanda T. Grant of Bloomingdale, Susan M. Davis of Rincon, Laura E. Jones and Estelle McIntosh, both of Savannah; a brother, Levy Thomas of Savannah and six grandsons.

JESUP -- Ruth P. Winn, 75, died June 22 at Southeast Georgia Regional Medical Center in Brunswick.

She was a native of North Carolina, a member of Memorial Baptist Church and a homemaker.

SURVIVORS: a daughter, Diane Winn of Jesup; a son, Dale Winn of Jesup; two granddaughters, Linda M. Robidas of Fort Polk, La., and Kelsey F. Rothfeldt of Jesup; and several nieces and nephews.

Bessie E. Myrick

Bessie Eugenia Myrick, 81, died June 22 at Candler Hospital.

She was born in Bryan County and lived in Garden City most of her life. She retired as a head re-inspector at Union Camp Corp after 42 years of service. She was a member of the Presbyterian Chapel in the Garden and Order of the Eastern Star.

SURVIVORS: her husband, Harold F. Myrick of Garden City; a daughter, Patricia Brickey of Savannah; a son, Edwin H. Myrick of Bloomingdale; a brother, P.R. Morgan of Bloomingdale; three grandchildren, Lisa Davis, Eddie Myrick and Brian Brickey, all of Savannah; and three great-granddaughters, Bryanna Myrick and Lauren Davis, both of Savannah, and Melanie Wilkes of Bloomingdale.

William Chisolm Jr.

YEMASSEE, S.C. -- William Chisolm Jr., 58, died June 20 at home.

He was born in Colleton County and attended Colleton County High School in Walterboro. He was a resident of the Yemassee area most of his life. He was employed as a brick mason for a number of years and was a member of Mount Nebo Baptist Church in Yemassee.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Elma Chisolm of Savannah; a daughter, Janice Chisolm of Savannah; a brother, Alfred Chisolm of Yemassee; three sisters, Ethel C. Stephens, Annie Ruth Fryar and Vergie R. Chisolm, all of Yemassee; and other relatives.

Opal B. Dunwoody

BAXLEY -- Opal Bland Dunwoody, 78, died June 22 at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

She lived most of her life in Appling County. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and Tippins-Weatherly Circle.

SURVIVORS: her husband, Jesse Dunwoody of Baxley; three daughters, Wanda Stone and Paris Brannen, both of Baxley, and Donna Pillsbury of Eureka, Mont.; three sons, Jesse Dunwoody of Miami, Eric England of Jesup and Leif England of Melbourne, Fla.; two sisters, Nell Summerall of Baxley and Edwina Long of Greenville, N.C.; a brother, G.B. Bland of Baxley; and 11 grandchildren.

Phil Campbell

ATHENS -- Longtime state Agriculture Commissioner J. Phil Campbell Jr., who switched to the Republican Party along with several other Georgia officials in the late 1960s, has died at the age of 81.

Campbell died Monday at an Athens hospital after an illness.

He served 13 years as state commissioner of agriculture, resigning in 1969 to become U.S. undersecretary of agriculture. He served in that position under Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford until 1975.

Campbell and several other state officeholders, including Public Service Commission Chairman Crawford Pilcher and Comptroller General Jimmy Bentley, switched from the Democratic Party to the state's fledgling GOP after the turbulent 1968 Democratic National Convention.

"We did what we did out of just sheer disgust at how the Chicago convention and the national Democratic Party was being run," Campbell said later.

As state commissioner, Campbell implemented an egg inspection program and built the Atlanta terminal market.

Earlier, Campbell served for six years in the Georgia House of Representatives.

Campbell graduated from the University of Georgia in 1940 with a bachelor's degree in agriculture. He studied at the University of Virginia and George Washington University, and spent a year doing research in Denmark as a Rotary Club Scholar.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Elizabeth McCreery Campbell of Athens, formerly of Savannah; two sons, James P. Campbell of Watkinsville and John A. Campbell of Athens; four daughters, Anne C. Prichard of Tennille, Vivian L. Campbell of Chevy Chase, Md., Jennifer C. Foy of Richmond Va., and Janice F. Campbell of Minneapolis; a sister, Montez C. Adams of Louisville, Ky.; 10 grandchildren, 12 nieces and nephews.

FUNERAL: 11 a.m. today at First Baptist Church, Athens.

She was born and educated in Waycross. She retired from Seaboard Coast Line Railroad shops.

Lutha Mae Benemon, 75, died June 21 at Hospice Savannah.

She was born in Allendale, S.C., and lived in Savannah most of her life. She was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Allendale and a homemaker.

Alfred Purdum Gilliard, 68, died June 22 at Satilla Regional Medical Center.

He was a native of Ware County and lived for several years in Florida before returning to Ware County in 1988. He retired as a mechanic for Container Corporation of America after 30 years. He attended Calvary Baptist Church and served in the Army during the Korean Conflict.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Virginia Gillard of Waycross; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ray and Patricia Gilliard of Green Cove Springs, Fla., and Joe and Brenda Gilliard of Pooler; two sisters, Pinky Lee of Waycross and Elven Fowler of Plainsville; a brother, the Rev.
