Robert E. Dent Jr.
Robert Eugene Dent Jr., 84, died June 26 at his daughter's home.

He was born in Macon and lived in Jacksonville, Fla., for many years. He was the widower of Mary Lee Wise Dent. He was a communicant of the Catholic Church and retired from Morgan's Inc., having served as a purchasing agent. He had played in the Senor Blitz at Bacon Park Golf Club.

SURVIVORS: a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Bobby Missroon of Savannah; three grandchildren, Robert L. Missroon Jr., and Todd E. and Stacy Missroon, all of Savannah; four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

VISITATION: 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Hubert C. Baker Funeral Home.

FUNERAL: 2 p.m. Monday at Hubert C. Baker Funeral Home, burial in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.

Jestine R. Pelote
Jestine R. Pelote, 76, died June 25 at Memorial Medical Center.

She was born in Luray, S.C., and lived in Savannah most of her life. She was a member of Greater Garvin's Temple Baptist Church.

SURVIVORS: a daughter, Thelma Flowers of Savannah; a son, Richard Albany of Savannah; 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Etheleen Carroll
REIDSVILLE -- Etheleen Carroll, 81, died June 25 at Evans Memorial Hospital in Claxton.

She was a native of Toombs County and lived in Reidsville since 1970. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church of Reidsville.

SURVIVORS: two daughters, Faye Mosley of Uvalda and Kathy Eason of Reidsville; nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Harry B. Hazelton Jr.
HILTON HEAD ISLAND -- Harry Boyden Hazelton Jr., 83, died June 25.

He was born in St. Louis. He was a 1932 graduate of St. Louis Country Day School and a 1936 graduate of Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He served as a lieutenant in the Navy in the Southwest Pacific during World War II. After the war, he joined The Imperial Knife Co. in New York, where he worked until retiring in 1977 as director of Corporate Planning. During his professional career, he was an active volunteer in community affairs. He was elected to the Board of the Village of Plandome, N.Y., and served as mayor of Plandome for several years. He was the widower of Elizabeth Windell Hazelton. He moved to Hilton Head Island in 1977 and was involved with the Community Theater and The First Presbyterian Church. In 1983, he joined the "Committee for Incorporation" of the town of Hilton Head Island. He was elected as "Councilman at Large" in August of 1983, and served in the first administration for over two years.

SURVIVORS: two sisters, Mary Frances Hazelton of Oregon and Barbara Bon de Sousa Pernas of Portugal; a brother, John Sanford Hazelton of New Mexico; two daughters, Lila Vultee of Maine and Susan Hilpert of Washington; two sons, John Douglas Hazelton of Delaware and James Boyden Hazelton of Hilton Head Island; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial service will be held 10 a.m. today at the Presbyterian Church on Hilton Head Island, for both Harry and Elizabeth Hazelton, who died on May 24.

Litarrsha N. Griffin
GUYTON -- Ms. Litarrsha Nicole "Nikki" Griffin, 22, died June 24 at Candler Hospital in Savannah.

She was a native of Effingham County. She was a 1994 graduate of Effingham County High School and attended Valdosta State University, Savannah Vocational Technical School. She was employed by Smile's Gas Store in Port Wentworth.

SURVIVORS: her parents, Debborah Griffin of Guyton and William Henry Griffin of Jacksonville, Fla.; a sister, Whitney Griffin of Guyton; a brother, William K. Griffin of Guyton; maternal grandmothers, Lillie Mae Boatwright of Ellabell and Maggie Griffin of Guyton; a host of aunts, uncles and cousins.

VISITATION: 7-8 p.m. today at Payton's Mortuary in Statesboro.

FUNERAL: 1 p.m. Sunday at Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Association Center in Guyton, burial in Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery.

Ruth D. Miller, 69, died June 26.

She was born in Flint Hill, Va., and lived in Savannah 33 years. She was a retired salesperson for Parts City. She was a former resident of Winchester, Va., and a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Springfield.

SURVIVORS: a daughter, Barbara L. Smith of Savannah; two sons, Bobby L. Miller of Pembroke and Phillip A. Miller of Savannah; two brothers, George and William J. Devers of Front Royal, Va.; and three grandchildren, Shawn P. Smith, Robert A. Miller and Morley Miller.

Dorothy B. Nutting
Mrs. Dorothy Bonney Nutting, 98, died June 25.

She was born in Norfolk, Va., and lived in Savannah most of her life. She attended Savannah's Massie School and Savannah High School. She graduated from Harrisonburg Normal School at Madison College (now James Madison University) in Virginia. She taught in the Savannah public schools for more than 26 years and was recognized as "Outstanding Teacher in Chatham County" while at 37th Street School in 1961. She was an active member of St. John's Episcopal Church, with the Church Women and as a guide in the Green-Meldrim House. She was the widow of Sidney T. Nutting Sr.

SURVIVORS: a son and daughter-in-law, Sidney T. Nutting Jr. and Barbara W. Nutting of Savannah; a daughter and son-in-law, Bonney N. Gilbreath and J. Earl Galbreath Jr. of Savannah; and four grandchildren, S. Thomas Nutting III of Thorsby, Ala., William R. Nutting of Montgomery, Ala., Joel T. Gilbreath of Savannah and Mary B. Gilbreath of Atlanta.

James E. Dykes
LYONS -- James Eugene Dykes, 72, died June 25 at Memorial Medical Center in Savannah.

He was born in Dodge County and lived in Toombs County most of his life. He was a deputy sheriff of Toombs County for the last four years. He attended Lyons Holiness Church, Lyons, and was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Vidalia Masonic Lodge No. 330, and Georgia Peace Officers Association. He retired as a lieutenant with the Vidalia Police Department after 12 years of service.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Lavada McCoy Dykes of Lyons; two sons, James D. and Dale Dykes, both of Vidalia; a sister, Clara L. Sasser of Brunswick; three brothers, Jennings, W.L. and Clyde Dykes, all of Vidalia; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Willie Ramsey Jr.
Willie "Big Jr." Ramsey Jr., 69, died June 25 at Candler Hospital.

Ramsey, whose other nickname was "Tim Riley," was born in Savannah. He was a construction worker with Local No. 896.

SURVIVORS: six daughters, Mildred Hughes, Yvonne Sapp and Bernice Early, all of Savannah, Delores Ramsey of Brooklyn, N.Y., Josephine Sweet of Statesboro and Vanessa Lewis of West Palm Beach, Fla.; four sons, Earl and Bernard Ramsey and James Stedman, all of Savannah and William Ramsey Jr. of Brooklyn; 35 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

BAXLEY -- Mittie L. Miles, 87, died June 25 at Appling Nursing Home.

She was a lifelong resident of Appling County and a homemaker. She was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church and Willing Workers Sunday School Class.

SURVIVORS: her husband of 70 years, Othello Miles of Baxley; a daughter and son-in-law, Annie R. and Doyle Tillman of Surrency; three sons and four daughters-in-law, Oswell and Peggy Miles of Baxley, Kenneth and Betty Miles of Danville, Va., Lanier and Sally Miles of St. Simons Island and Vonice Miles; 11 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was born in Treutlen County and was a World War II veteran. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was a Baptist.

SURVIVORS: a daughter, Sharon Rickey of Orlando, Fla.; a son, Donald Heath of Winter Garden, Fla.; a sister, Jane Norris of Winter Garden; two brothers, Troy Heath of Alamo and Gerald Heath of Orlando; eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Bertha Burkhalter Carter, 87, died June 27 at Hospice Savannah.

She was a native of Tattnall County and lived in Savannah many years. She was a supervising welder at Savannah Shipyard during World War II and ran Carter Floor Surfacing Co. with her husband. She was a charter member of Weslyan Methodist Church and was a direct descendent of Ebenezer.

SURVIVORS: seven daughters, Bertie Lee Cowart, Billie Dyer, Diane Stokes, Marilyn Dixon and Brenda Waters, all of Savannah, Eloise Love of Bloomingdale and Christine Santos of Oxford, Pa.; a cousin, Kate Sullivan of Savannah; 17 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, six step-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

VISITATION: 4-6 p.m. today and 6-8 p.m. Monday at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.

Derrick Lamar Jones, 11, died June 25 at Memorial Medical Center from injuries received in an auto-bicycle accident.
