Owens W. Robson

BRUNSWICK - Owens Willie "O.W." Robson, 82, died June 26 at Southeast Georgia Regional Medical Center.

He was a native of McIntosh County and lived in Brunswick for 52 years. He was a retired chemist from Brunswick Pulp and Paper. He was a longtime member of Taylors United Methodist Church, where he was teacher of the Willing Workers Sunday School Class and Methodist Youth Fellowship leader. He was a past president of the Methodist Men's Club and served on the church Administrative Board. He was a member of Ocean Lodge 214 F&AM He was an Army veteran of World War II.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Emma F. Robson of Brunswick; two daughters and sons-in-law, Amelia R. and Jim F. Strickland of Houston, and Joanne R. and Raymond Phillips of Brunswick; three grandchildren, Joe R. Phillips, Pearl City, Hawaii and James F. Strickland Jr. and Laura G. Strickland, both of Houston; and several nieces and nephews.

VISITATION: 7-9 p.m. today at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home in Brunswick.

FUNERAL: 11 a.m. Monday at Taylors United Methodist Church in Brunswick, burial in Taylor Methodist Church Yard Cemetery.

J.D. Rowell

HAZLEHURST - J.D. Rowell, 74, died June 27 at Jeff Davis Hospital.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Jeff Davis County. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Akin Bennett Sunday School Class. He was retired from Amoco Fabrics. He was a member of Woodman of the World and a Navy veteran of World War II.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Marilyn Bailey Rowell of Hazlehurst; daughters, Cheryl B. Castleberry of Hawkinsville, Brenda D. Merritt of Hazlehurst and Linda S. Henderson of Ellenwood; a son, Richard S. Underwood of Hazlehurst and Gary W. Rowell of Winder; brothers, Wesley Rowell of Hazlehurst and Paul N. Rowell of Sautee; a sister, Mary L. Woodcock of Savannah; and 10 grandchildren.

VISITATION: will begin 8 a.m. today at Wainright-Parlor Funeral Home in Hazlehurst.

FUNERAL: 11 a.m. Monday at Hazlehurst First United Methodist Church, burial in Philadelphia United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Jasper C. Stanfield

WAYCROSS - Jasper C. "Bud" Stanfield, 97, died June 26 at Satilla Regional Medical Center.

He was a native of Tattnall County and lived in Pierce County for most of his life. He retired in 1966 from the S.C.L. Railroad after serving for 41 years with the A.C.L. and S.C.L. He was a deacon and former Sunday School Superintendent in the Laura Chapel Baptist Church. He was a member of the Blackshear Masonic Lodge No. 270. He was a retired farmer and a carpenter.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Mattie Walker Stanfield of Patterson; four daughters, Mina Griner of Patterson, Luverne Griffis of Waverly, Mary Lou Tatum of Nichols and Iris Cobb of Morris; two sons, Troy Stanfield of Blackshear and Lewis Stanfield of Patterson; 13 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

FUNERAL: 3 p.m. today at Laura Chapel Baptist Church, burial in Laura Chapel Cemetery.

Williams S. Stubbs

AUSTELL - William Stanley Stubbs, 86, died June 26 in Marietta.

He was a native of Waycross and a former resident of Brunswick. He was retired from the Navy as a chief warrant officer after 22 years.

SURVIVORS: a sister, Marie M. Allen of Austell; two brothers, Walter and Malcolm Mock, both of Brunswick; and several nieces and nephews.

Dr. R. Thomas Tebeau

SYLVANIA - Dr. R. Thomas Tebeau, 84, died June 26 at Memorial Medical Center in Savannah.

He was born in Effingham County and practiced dentistry in Sylvania for more than 51 years. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of Sylvania First United Methodist Church in Sylvania. He was a member for 58 years and past president of the Sylvania Rotary Club. He was a member of the Board of Directors at Farmers and Merchant Bank in Sylvania, a member of Claude Pinckney Sunday School Class and a former councilman for the city of Sylvania.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Agnes S. Tebeau of Sylvania; a daughter, Susan T. McKinney of Dalton; two sons, R. Thomas Tebeau Jr. of Adel and John R. Tebeau of Thomson; two sisters, Leighton T. Harden of Springfield and Sybil T. Adams of Shreveport, La.; two brothers, Otis and Ernest Tebeau, both of Springfield; and six grandchildren.

FUNERAL: 4 p.m. today at First United Methodist Church, burial in Screven County Memorial Cemetery.

Jennie G. Walker

Mrs. Jennie Mae Grimes Walker, 85, died June 27 at home.

She was born in Claxton and was the widow of James William Walker Sr. She was a member of Savannah Baptist Center and an avid bingo player.

SURVIVORS: a daughter, Patricia W. Waters of Savannah; four sons, James W. Walker Jr. and Robert M. Walker, both of Tampa, Fla., Richard G. and Ronald M. Walker, both of Savannah; 15 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Joseph H. Lyles Sr.

MIDWAY - Joseph H. Lyles Sr., 74, died June 26 at Eisenhower Medical Center, Fort Gordon.

He was born in Bibb County and lived in Midway for 20 years. He retired as a civil service employee at Fort Stewart after 10 years of service and also retired as a Marine Corps master gunnery sergeant after 34 years of service. He was a member of Midway First United Methodist Church and a past president of Half Moon Club of Colonels Island.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Wilma G. Lyles of Colonels Island; a daughter and son-in-law, Carla and Jerry Harper of Jacksonville, Fla.; a son, Joe H. Lyles Jr. of Key West, Fla.; a stepson and daughter-in-law, Tony and Yevette Powell of Jacksonville; a grandson and his wife, Marine Corps Sgt. Christopher Harper and Kelley Harper of Oceanside, Calif.; a stepgrandson, T.J. Powell Jr. of Jacksonville; and two great-grandchildren, Morgan and Ashlee Harper of Oceanside.

SURVIVORS: her husband, Henry A. Bragg of Sylvania; two daughters, Susan Bragg of Swainsboro and Carrie B. Gay of Sylvania; two sons, Thomas K. Bragg of Sylvania and Michael K. Bragg of Covington; a sister, Judy M. Cummings of Tampa, Fla.; two brothers, Ralph M. Mapel Jr. of Coraopolis, Pa., and Robert N. Mapel of Clinton, Pa.; and 12 grandchildren.

Ray Canady

SWAINSBORO - Ray Canady, 87, died June 28 at Swainsboro Nursing Home.

He was a lifelong resident of Emanuel County and a member of Hawhammock Baptist Church, Emanuel County Farm Bureau and Durdenville Hunting Club. He was a retired farmer and farm equipment salesman.

SURVIVORS: three daughters, Minnie L. McBride of Tampa, Fla., Rhae J. Davis of Webster, Texas, and Vivian York of Raleigh, N.C.; a son, James R. Cannady of Twin City; two sisters, Alva L. Cannady of Americus and Maude Scarboro of Boynton Beach, Fla.; nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL: 11 a.m. Tuesday at Antioch Primitive Baptist Church, burial in Antioch Church Cemetery near Twin City.

Bernard Leibowitz

Bernard Leibowitz, 86, died June 27 at home.

He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and lived in Savannah for 44 years. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II who served in the 97th Bomb Group, the first group to go to England with the 8th Air Force. Later he served in North Africa in the 12th and 15th Air Force. He received 11 Air Medals, a Purple Heart, four Bronze Stars and was recommended for the Distinguished Flying Cross. He flew 50 combat missions as a radio operator, gunner and photographer on a B-17, mostly on the "Yankee Doodle."

He was chosen by the Jewish Welfare board as one of 10 Outstanding Jewish Serviceman of World War II. He was a member of the Air Force Historical Society, Savannah Wing of the 8th Air Force and Military Order of the Purple Heart. After VE Day, he was one of the first servicemen released at Hunter Air Force Base, because of having had the highest points. He was honored by the "March of Dimes" in 1958. He organized the POW and MIA write-in campaign. He was a member of Congregation B'nai B'rith Jacob, the Brotherhood, the Chevra Kadisha and Congregation Agudath Achim.

SURVIVORS: his wife of 53 years, Rhoda Cohen Leibowitz of Savannah; two sons, Mark Leibowitz of Hilton Head Island and John Leibowitz of San Francisco; a brother, Nathan Leibowitz of Brooklyn; and three sisters, Sally Kirms of Buffalo, N.Y., Rae Lehrman of Mystic, Conn., and Rose Katz of Manhattan, N.Y.

The family will sit Shivah at the residence.

GRAVESIDE SERVICE: 10 a.m. Tuesday in Bonaventure Cemetery.

Virginia L. Abernethy

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Virginia Lawhead Abernethy, 71, died June 28 in Orange Park.

She was born in Jacksonville and was a longtime resident. She was honored as Woman of the Year and was a past president of the Orange Park Woman's Club and a member of Orange Park Garden Club.

SURVIVORS: her husband of 44 years, Bill Abernethy of Jacksonville; a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy Walczyk and Michael Walczyk of Savannah; a son, George M. Abernethy of Jacksonville; and a sister, Betty Upton of Jacksonville.

VISITATION: 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Jacksonville Memory Gardens Funeral Home, Orange Park.
