Rev. Finis Jennings Dake, Sr.

The Rev. Finis J. Dake Sr. of Lawrenceville, publisher of Dake's Annotated Reference Bible, died Tuesday [July 7, 1987] at his home. He was 84.

The funeral was Wednesday at Lawrenceville Church of God with burial at Gwinnett Memorial Park.

The Rev. Dake, a non-denominational minister, headed Dake Bible Sales of Lawrenceville and produced the 1963 reference Bible that bears his name.

His notes and comment accompany Scripture verses. The work resulted from "100,000 hours" of Bible study, according to a company biography.

"Thousands" of churchgoers carryand use the Dake Bible, according to Warren R oberts of WSSA radio, a Christian music station in Morrow.

In the 1950s, the Rev. Dake appeared on a radio program on WGST in Atlanta and demonstrated a "cover-to-cover" knowledge of the Bible, according to a spokesman for the station.

The Rev. Dake also wrote four other books - "God's Plan for Man," "The Rapture and Second Coming of Christ," "Revelations Expounded" and "Bible Truths Unmasked."

Finis Jennings Dake was born Oct. 18, 1902, in Miller County, Mo. As a young man, he worked as a cowboy, according to a relative.

His wife, Mrs. Dorothy Dobbins Dake, died at the age of 84 in February.

Surviving are a son, Finis J. Dake Jr. of Lawrenceville; two daughters, Mrs. Finetta Kennedy and Mrs. Anna Beth Germaine, both of Lawrenceville; a brother, John Dake of California; two sisters, Mrs. Nancy Hughes of Salt Lake City and Mrs. Stella Durbin of Stockbridge; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Jan D. Mock

MIDWAY - Jan Dean Mock, 45, died June 28 under hospice care.

She was a native of Chatham County and lived for several years in Midway.

She was a member of Midway United Methodist Church.

SURVIVORS: her husband, Phillip H. Mock of Midway; two stepsons, Andrew C. and Phillip A. Mock, both of Savannah; and a brother, Ted Dean of Midway.

VISITATION: 7-9 p.m. today at Carter Funeral Home in Hinesville.

FUNERAL: 10 a.m. Wednesday at Midway United Methodist Church, burial in the church cemetery.

Ray Canady

TWIN CITY - Ray Canady, 87, died June 28 at Swainsboro Nursing Home.

He was a lifelong resident of Emanuel County and a member of Hawhammock Baptist Church, Emanuel County Farm Bureau and Durdenville Hunting Club.

He was a retired farmer and farm equipment salesman.

SURVIVORS: three daughters, Minnie Lou McBride of Tampa, Fla., Rhae Joan Davis of Webster, Texas, and Vivian York of Raleigh, N.C.; a son, James Ray Canady of Twin City; two sisters, Alva Lois Cannady of Americus and Maude Scarboro of Boynton Beach, Fla.; 11 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL: 11 a.m. today at Antioch Primitive Baptist Church, burial in Antioch Church Cemetery near Twin City.

Lila Proman

RICHMOND HILL - Lila Proman, 76, died June 28 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Savannah.

She was the widow of Jeff Proman.

She was a native of Bryan County and lived in Richmond Hill all her life.

She retired from the State Forestry Commission after 32 years.

SURVIVORS: two granddaughters, Donna Scholl of Palm Harbour, Fla., and Pamela Cobb of Bowling Green, Fla.; two great-grandsons, Kyle and Tyler Cobb, both of Bowling Green; and several nieces and nephews.

VISITATION: 7-9 p.m. today at Stewart Brothers Funeral Service, Richmond Hill Chapel.

FUNERAL: 11 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Baptist Church, burial in First Baptist Cemetery in Richmond Hill.

Odessa S. Lucas

Odessa Shank Lucas, 74, died at June 29 at Tara of Thunderbolt Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center.

SURVIVORS: four daughters, Teresa Lucas Cutter of Chesapeake, Va., Geraldine Booker Coleman of Waco, Texas, Cheryl Lucas Turner of Sacramento, Calif., and Patricia Ann Hammons of Savannah; a son, Tommie Baianes of Los Angeles; five sisters, Lillian Shank Scott of Chesapeake, Annie Ruth Shank Rivers of Atlanta and Rether Shank Johnson, Olivia Shank Young and Gloria Shank Smith, all of Savannah; a brother, Roger E. Shank of Savannah; 10 grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

George W. Abelson Sr.

George William Abelson Sr., 83, died June 28 at Candler Hospital.

He was born in New York and lived in Savannah most of his life.

He was a 1934 graduate of Benedictine Military School and attended Georgia Teachers College.

He was an Army veteran of World War II and retired as a foreman from Union Camp Corp. after 38 years.

He coached the Savannah Lions' Boys Club Little League baseball team.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Dolores R. Abelson of Savannah; a son, George W. Abelson Jr. of Savannah; a daughter, Martha A. Scarboro of Savannah; two granddaughters and grandson-in-law, Donna S. and Ross Mosteller and Diane Scarboro, all of Savannah; a great-grandchild, Ian Mosteller of Savannah; and several nieces and nephews.

FUNERAL: 10 a.m. today at Fox Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel, burial in Bonaventure Cemetery.
