James M. Wallrich

James M. (Jim) Wallrich of Cleveland died Friday, July 26, 2002, near Cameron, Mont., while on an extended camping trip of the western states. Born June 22, 1928 in Shawano, Wisc., he had recently celebrated his 74th birthday with family and friends in Wyoming.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marion T. Wallrich, in 1999, and his parents several years ago. Jim is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Wallrich; daughters and sons-in-law Melody and Tony Jiran of Savannah, and Christy and Tim Berry of Clarkesville; step-daughter and son-in-law Cathey and Tommy Free of Clarkesville; and step-son and daughter-in-law Jay and Dee Thomas, stationed with the U.S. Navy in Norfolk, Va.; grandsons Joshua Randells, stationed with the U.S. Air Force in Clovis, N.M. and Marshall Randells of Clarkesville; granddaughters Michaela Jiran and Isabel Jiran of Savannah; step-granddaughters Stephanie Fain of Clarkesville and Savannah Thomas and Jasmine Thomas of Norfolk, Va; and great-granddaughter Ashton Randells of Clovis, N.M.

Wallrich is also survived by his brother, Richard Wallrich of Santa Rosa, Calif.; sisters, Jeanne Morris of DePere, Wisc., and Marcia Heinz of Shawano, Wisc.; as well as many friends and other relatives scattered in several states.

Wallrich served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, graduated with a degree in forestry from the University of Montana in Missoula, and retired from the U.S. Forest Service in 1985. He also retired from the Mossy Creek Christmas Tree Farm in Cleveland in 1993.

He was a member of Cleveland First Baptist Church and the Providence Sunday School Class there, and of the Gateway Squares in Cleveland. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are being handled by Barrett Funeral Home, Cleveland.

William Robert Wofford

Mr. William Robert Wofford, 78, of Cleveland died Monday, August 5, 2002 at his residence following an extended illness. Funeral services were held August 7, 2002 at the funeral home chapel, the Rev. John Ayers and Deacon Bill Clemmons officiating. Burial followed in the Mountain View Baptist Church Cemetery.

Wofford was a native and lifelong resident of White County and was the son of the late Ernest and Halie Nix Wofford. He was a retired truck driver. He served in the United States Army and was of the Baptist faith. He attended Eastside Fellowship Church. He is preceded in death by his brother, Albert Wofford, and sisters, Lona Shelnut, Cora Bryant Nora Huckaby and Ola Shelnut.

Survivors include his daughter, Joan Dobbs of Forest Park; brother, Clifford Wofford of Jacksonville, Fla.; sister, Ethel Turner of Greenville, S.C.;and niece and nephew, Joe and Darlene Gailey Clark of Clermont. Two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren also survive.

Alexander’s Gateway Chapel Funeral Home of Cleveland was in charge of the arrangements.

Ann Stroup Rary

Ann Stroup Rary, 66, of Cleveland died Wednesday, July 31, 2002 after a brief illness.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, Aug. 3, at 2 p.m. at Hamilton Mill Memorial Chapel in Buford. The Rev. Jim Bolin officiated.

The family received friends and remembered her through pictures and memories on Saturday, Aug. 3, from 10 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family said Mrs. Rary “would want you to search your heart and reach out to help someone close to you in need personally, financially or spiritually.” The family would appreciate a note expressing how you remembered her, a family representative said.

Surviving are daughters and sons-in-law, Connie and Chuck Jones of Dahlonega, Cathie and Hal Jones of Acworth; son, David Rary of Cleveland; grandchildren, Jared, Evan, Caleb, Patrick, Katie, Kristina, Rebecca and Decca; brothers, Jerry Stroup and Larry Stroup.

Hamilton Mill Memorial Chapel was in charge of the arrangements.

Bonnie Ashe

Miss Bonnie Ashe, 92. of Cleveland died Saturday, Oct. 12, 2002 at a private health care center following an extended illness.

Miss Ashe was born in Union County the daughter of the late John D. and Laura Bell Martin Ashe. She was a member of Blue Creek Baptist Church.

Survivors include her brother, John Irvin Ashe of Cleveland; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday at the chapel of Barrett Funeral Home. The Rev. Leon Carter officiated. Burial was in the Cleveland Cemetery.

Johnathan Dwight England

Johnathan Dwight England, 25, of Cleveland died Thursday Oct. 10, 2002 at the Medical Center of Louisiana at New Orleans.

Mr. England was born in Hall County and had lived in White County all of his life. He was preceded in death by his father, Danny Dwight England.

Survivors include his mother, Gladys Willene Simpson Sullens of Cleveland; sisters, Libby Dodson, Elisha England, Ellen Marie England, all of Cleveland; brothers, Steven England, Mitchell England, both of Gainesville.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday from the Chapel of Barrett Funeral Home. The Rev. Bobby Smith and the Rev. L.G. Howard officiated.

Barrett Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Ellen Elaine Gerrells Hulsey

Mrs. Ellen Elaine Gerrells Hulsey, 53, of Cleveland died Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002, at Habersham County Medical Center following a brief illness.

Mrs. Hulsey was born in Habersham County and was preceded in death by her husband, Phillip Wayne Hulsey, and mother, Clara Kinsey Gerrells. She was a substitute teacher for the White County School System.

Survivors include her daughter, Tonia Garcia of Cleveland; son, Kevin Hulsey of Cleveland; father, George Gerrells of Cleveland; sister, Joyce Morris of Baldwin; brother, Ricky Gerrells of Cleveland; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2002 at Macedonia Methodist Church. The Rev. W. A. Jenkins, the Rev. Lester Haynes and the Rev. Jessie Savage officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Barrett Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Catherine Mae Gilreath

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002 at Shoal Creek Baptist Church for Mrs. Catherine Mae Gilreath, 89 of Cleveland. The Rev. Chris Anderson and the Rev. Loyd Martin officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Gilreath died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center following an extended illness.

Mrs. Gilreath was born in Fannin County the daughter of the late Cornelius and Ida Sims Thomas. She was a member of Shoal Creek Baptist Church and a founding member of the Shoal Creek Goodwill Circle. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Gilreath and son, William (Bill) Gilreath.

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Earl and Jean Gilreath, Kenneth (Shorty) and Edna Gilreath, Neal and Virginia Gilreath, all of Cleveland, Ernest and Liz Gilreath of Ruidoso, N.M.; daughters and sons-in-law, Christine and Eugene Seabolt, Edith and Bill Stover, all of Cleveland, Frances and Stanley Jones of Demorest; daughter, Gail Barron of Cleveland; daughter-in-law, Carolyn Gilreath; 19 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren; and 1 great great grandchild.

Hoyt Alexander

BLAIRSVILLE – Hoyt Jessie Alexander died Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, at Union General Hospital in Blairsville following a sudden illness.

He was 84.

Mr. Alexander was born Aug. 14, 1918, in Union County, the son of the late Ed Alexander and the late Hattie Hunter Alexander.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Union County and was a veteran of the United States Air Force in World War II.

He had owned and operated Alexander’s Store since the early 1950s.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Laura Dyer Alexander; brother, Jimmy Alexander; and a brother-in-law, Ralph Gibson. Mr. Alexander was a member and deacon of Old Liberty Baptist Church.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Gary York, Cleveland; sons and daughters-in-law, Eddy and Sandy Alexander, Blairsville; Jim and Helen Alexander, Germany; brother and sister-in-law, Tommy and Martha Alexander, Blairsville; sister, Bernice Gibson, Blairsville; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives.

Funeral services were held Sunday at Old Liberty Baptist Church with the Rev. Harley Hunter and the Rev. Jerry Young officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mountain View Funeral Home, Blairsville, had charge of arrangements.

Ola Payne Carson

CORNELIA – Ola Payne Carson died Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, at a private nursing home following an extended illness. She was 91.

Born in Habersham County on Oct. 20, 1911, she was the daughter of the late Enoch and Etta Morris Payne.

She was a homemaker and a member of Good News Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar Carson; brother, the Rev. John Payne; and sisters, Alice Zimmerman, Vedia Carr and Lovella Gulley.

Surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law, Syvilla and Clay Poole, Cornelia, Rita and Buford Wade, Cleveland, Ann and Henry Grant, Flowery Branch, Gail and Eddie Cobb, Westminster, S.C.; son, Kenneth Carson, Demorest; son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Phyllis Carson, Mt. Airy; brothers, Joe Payne, Alto, Phil Payne, Cornelia; sisters, Daisy Rudeseal, Cornelia, Gladys Warren, Alto, Winnie Grizzle, Titusville, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at Good News Baptist Church with the Rev. Austin Kelley and the Rev. Neil King officiating.

Burial was in the New Hope Baptist Church cemetery.

McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home, Cornelia, had charge of arrangements.

Bob Johnson Sr.

Robert ‘Bob’ Joseph Johnson Sr. of Cleveland died Friday, Nov. 29, 2002, at his residence following a brief illness.

He was 74.

Mr. Johnson was born in New Orleans to the late William Joseph and Ruth Fortenelle Johnson.

He was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his wife, RoseMary Johnson, Cleveland; daughters, Deborah Hibbs, Lawrenceville, Sheryl Harvin, Snellville, Pamela Johnson, Covington, La.; sons, Robert Johnson Jr., Kenner, La., Keith Johnson, Steven Johnson, both of Cleveland; brother, Roger DeJean, Covington, La.; 19 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church. Father Thad Rudd officiated.

Burial followed in Yonah View Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 1397 Helen Highway, Cleveland, Ga. 30528.

Evy Mae Nelms

Evy Mae Nelms of Cleveland died Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, at Habersham County Medical Center following an extended illness. She was 87.

Mrs. Nelms was born in Towns County, the daughter of the late Jasper and Ollie Benefield, and was preceded in death by her husband, William Nelms.

She was a homemaker and member of Old Nacoochee Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughters, Opal Chastain, Sautee-Nacoochee, Juanita Welcome, Louisville; sons, Duel Nelms, William Nelms Jr., Fred Nelms, all of Cleveland; sisters, Lela Hopper, Cleveland, Ida Barrett, Hiawassee; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) in the Chapel of Barrett Funeral Home. The Rev. Dave Fortner and the Rev. Kenneth Franklin will officiate.

Burial will be in Center Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Rose Thomas

Rose Marie Thomas of Cleveland died Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002, at Habersham Home following an extended illness.

She was 65.

Mrs. Thomas was born in Alabama to the late Clifford and Annie Kathleen Crosby and had lived in Cleveland for a number of years.

Survivors include her daughter, Holly Swing, Cleveland; sons, Andrew Thomas, Clarkesville, Steven Thomas, Craigsville, Va.; sisters, Patricia Cornell, Clarkesville, Karen Riddle, Cleveland; and seven grandchildren.

Memorial services were held Tuesday at the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection. The Rev. John Bolton officiated.

Barrett Funeral Home, Cleveland, had charge of arrangements.
